I know my bias is hard to hide here, but I definitely tried to explain my reasoning to the best of my ability. I hope this generates great conversation!
Firstly, I LOVE the Thorn trilogy (and have no problem calling it that). I grew up on it. I have the Fox CBS VHS, I rented Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers on VHS every weekend for a month straight when it first came out. I LOVE the Thorn trilogy. Also, I agree with you that Halloween 5 is VERY under appreciated. Those two scenes you mentioned certainly are two of the most suspenseful chases in the entire franchise. Which of the three do I think is the best film? I’ve got to say Halloween 4. That opening shot outside of Haddonfield, with the title card is so atmospheric. The score during that scene is chilling. It feels like the Halloween holiday before the Halloween franchise. I like how the film takes it’s time to begin. We get exposition about Michael’s history before he comes back to life. I really like the family storyline. I know that in the original, he had no motive, yet his first kill was his sister. So, I feel like Halloween II’s introduction of the family storyline made a lot of sense. Jamie was an amazing final girl in this film. The chase scenes through the town, through the school (even with that weird mask in that one scene), and on the truck were great sequences. Do you know what my biggest issue with Halloween 5 is? Michael has a full set of nice, thick dark hair and not a single scar on his face after being burnt to a crisp in Halloween II. Say nothing of him having a new pair of eyeballs! 😂 Now, Halloween 6 is just an awesome slasher movie. The kills were brutal. Michael was awesome. The atmosphere and the score were great. Halloween 6 really takes what I love about the slasher genre and turns it way up (like Halloween Kills), and that is why I love it so much.
The Thorn trilogy as a whole has the best atmosphere of all the films and it screams Halloween. I also just love Donald Pleasance portrayal of Loomis in it. My Ranking: 1. Halloween 4 (4/5) (It did played it safe but it worked especially making the ending absolutely shocking) 2. Halloween 6 (Producer’s Cut - incest and stones aside this is my preferred cut especially the John Carpenter like score, pacing, coherent plot (I rather the story be insane but makes sense than zero sense like the theatrical cut), and relying on suspense than gore) (3.5/5) 3. Halloween 5 (3/5) (Danielle Harris is the better here than in H4 (even though she’s amazing in H4) and love the Gothic like vibes but imo it’s the weakest narratively speaking
I watched the thorn trilogy every October several times each from like ages 8-16. They are so nostalgic for me and always remind me of everything in a midwest Halloween. It's hard to pick a best one without some bias, but I would choose 5 because every time I think of the trilogy my first thought shoots to Danielle Harris struggling to talk and Tina being her sister replacement.
It’s hard to keep a character like MM interesting over the course of many movies considering he doesn’t speak and has no real motive, so the Thorn trilogy certainly did a lot to build intrigue into the series. I kind of wished it continued into H2O, but I also think it would have strangled itself with too much story. I loved them in the order of 4, 6, & 5. Small margins between them, but this is the order of my love for them
For me, it’s a toss up between 4 and 6, and I think a part of that, in addition to a particular atmosphere in both films, is George P. Wilbur’s performance as Michael (plus that of the individual who replaced him for the reshoots of the theatrical cut of H6, since he captured the same menacing and intimidating demeanor that Wilbur did). Michael was just a force to be reckoned with in those two films (especially in H6, when he went in full not-fuckin’-around mode). From H4’s opening credits to Allan Howarth’s arrangements of the music in the film, to the look of Haddonfield and the addition of the electric guitars to the original themes; from the thumb in the head and the pickup truck slaughter in H4, to the exploding head and the operating room massacre in H6; from the chase in the house, during which Brady gets killed, to the moment in Smith’s Grove when Michael walks out of that room into the hallway and stares Tommy down face to face for the first time since 1978, along with the later hallway chase and the pipe beat down scene, these two really are neck and neck for me.
I might have major issues with Halloween 5 but I’m in team Tina love Tina people hate her because she replaced Rachel but let’s be honest she should have died in 4
Appreciate your take on the these films bro! And thank you for not being biased for H5 lol You made some great points for H5. H6 is in my top 5 out of the whole franchise.
I like to believe the "cult trilogy" is actually rooted in Halloween 2. On the chalkboard Michael or someone close to him wrote "Samhain" - the Celtic Pagan origin of Halloween. Considering it's an ancient druid cult, I can't write this off as mere coincidence.
I completely agree with you about the atmosphere of Halloween 6. Probably the best version of the film out there is the Blue Meyers Cut (if you know, you know) as it mostly combines the best components of the theatrical cut and the producer’s cut.
This is a positive look at the Thorn Trilogy. I've seen a lot about the HALLOWEEN movies on RUclips and so much of it is flat out negative. What's wrong with the movie (s) instead of what works is getting so old! This guy has the right attitude. The 6th is my favorite but I really like this perspective that 5 was the best. Danielle Harris is superb in 5. She does "nail it".
I've always loved 4. And I love 5 even MORE. But in 6, they began to seem intent on fixing something that wasn't broken. Michael Myers DOES NOT NEED affiliation. He makes no sense as muscle for a cult. Kind of reminds me of the sensation of watching the first Star Wars and seeing Darth Vader ordered around by Governor Tarkin.
@@whitechocolate7777 Yes, and that's the bizarre thing about people who claim to 'hate' this movie...so often, the things they say make it sound as if they either never saw it, and are mindlessly repeating things other people say...or either they started watching it 35 years ago, and got to the part where Tina spazzes out in Jamie's hospital room, and just gave up and turned it off at that point, assuming the whole movie is of that caliber. It's become like a kid in high school that's unpopular, and he's been unpopular for so long that nobody can remember why they're not supposed to like him. Even those that DO like him are often scared to death to admit it!
If you took the positives of each of these three films you would have the ultimate Halloween sequel. Take the great characters and score of 4, the intensity of the laundry shoot and car chase of 5 and the atmosphere, brutality and mask of 6 and you've got yourself a Halloween entrée. 🎃
I strongly prefer the Halloween 6 version of Tommy Doyle over the Halloween Kills version of the character, and I say that as someone who loves both movies. Any that has nothing to do with Anthony Michael Hall’s performance-he’s actually excellent in the film; the character is just much better written in Halloween 6. Paul Rudd’s performance is also very under-appreciated.
Halloween 5 is ok in my book. Not the best for sure. I think if they hadn't made the Meyers house a Gothic mansion and cutout the goofy cop scenes it would have been better. Also if they had toned Tina character down just a bit. Nowhere near as bad as Ressurection.
Halloween 4 is my favourite Halloween movie mainly for nostalgia it was one of the first horror movies I saw by a mile the best of this trilogy not even close sorry dude 5 and 6 I could take or leave to be honest but I do watch them every October when I marathon this series minus resurrection that movie can burn in hell I watch the producers cut of 6 it’s flawed but some somewhat coherent the theatrical cut is a mess
I fully admit my bias is showing a tinge here lol. However, I gave 5 the edge because I felt its creative swings enriched the movie. I know most will say 4, and I can’t even truly argue with that. But, it played it a bit too safe for me
The reason i wouldn’t pick H5 out of the three is because there are terribly boring scenes that drag out like crazy! I prefer H6 out of the three just because the atmosphere and i never get bored watching it, the theatrical cut of course🔪🎃
My favorite is curse unrated directors cut I need to give 5 another chance, good excuse to upgrade to blu ray. 4 and 5 have always been lesser on my ranking, maybe I'm missing something or the mask takes me out of it That much...
When you go back to 5, try to focus on the aesthetic of the film, and Danielle’s performance. The Nic Cage mask can definitely be distracting, but there’s a lot to like here
I don't think there's a really "Objective" answer because it's ultimately dependent upon the criteria (set of standards you use to make a judgment) you use to judge a film. The criteria used by Roger Ebert is different than criteria used by Armond White (yes, I know most just consider him a "contrarian", but there's reasons he should be grappled with as a critic, ie: his explorations of filmmakers like Derek Jarman, Bruce LaBruce, etc.) and both of those are different from the criteria of a character like Joe Bob Briggs.
Awesome video Nick hope you're well my awesome friend . Halloween 5 is a little better then 4 . why one word tina 😂 . 4 has the best ending . i like the idea of jamie becoming like micheal . six is a Mass but i still like it . i wish i could get a copy of drumdums verison of Halloween 6 .
I've said it before & I'll say it again w/r/t HALLOWEEN 5, but mean-spiritedness is one reason people who like gialli like it while also being imo the reason others really hate it. I find it's mean-spiritedness to be so sensational & over-the-top as to be edgily entertaining but not particularly offensive, but that's just me personally. With that said, I think the detractors don't give Othenin-Girard enough credit for breaking audience expectations and raising the stakes. Fans of H4 may not like Rachel's demise, but it comes off as genuinely shocking if you see it for the first time after H4 and don't know anything about the rest of the series. She's Jamie's protector. You think she's safe as a result, but Othenin-Girard pulls the rug out from under you. Then you have Tina take up that role. I think she's a misunderstood character. Tina is a young, impulsive girl that acts kooky because she's immature and just wants to have fun. At the same time she DEEPLY cares about Jamie, so she isn't just some character that's completely self-centered. There's a real tension in her. She's torn between wanting to be the fun, kooky girl that's just out for a good time and caring about Jamie (that care represents her more mature side). Ultimately, she has a real character arc because of this that ends with where she makes the ultimate sacrifice for Jamie. I've known girls that act like Tina so I've never understood the criticisms of the character. I think people just don't like that she vacillates between wanting to help Jamie all she can and wanting to live her own life as a teen girl. Alot of people are watching it with "Dumb girl! Listen to Jamie! She knows what's going on!" and I don't think that's how her character should be understood. In any case, Tina takes the role Rachel had in four and maybe, if you're watching it for the first time, you think as a result of that she'll be safe. But Othenin-Girard pulls the rug out from under you again at the end of the second act. And not only that but he throws in a whole safe sex scene where even though the kids are doing it with condoms in a way that's emphasized, they get offed anyways. I don't recall any other horror movie of the time doing that. It's kind of jarring in it's own way even with the sex = death trope being prominent by this point in the slasher phase. Because, come on, they're doing it safely! But, like I said, they get offed anyway. And then you have the way Michael just manhandles the police; Loomis is psychotic in his pursuit of Michael at this point, even pointing Jamie in danger; there is no happy closure and the final frame is just "WTF?" with Jamie crying; etc. And not to mention the laundry chute scene. If you are watching that only having seen the first 3 Michael Myers entries you may actually end up thinking "Oh, they're actually going to kill her off" because the stakes have been raised high and expectations subverted so much it feels like it's not outside the realm of possibility anymore. I think it's a very interesting entry and will always defend it. It's got a darker edge to it than most entries in the franchise where it feels like anything can happen.
The original set out a template, and most seem to regard that one as the best. Halloween 5 is just about the ONLY entry to follow that really adhered to that approach in a substantive way. Halloween 5 took the whole 'cat and mouse' motif to the level of an art form. Most of the others either didn't have the patience, or they got distracted by things that had nothing to do with the series. Halloween 5 was, in many respects, the strongest of the sequels. It stayed true to the original premise, but stepped up the bodycount and the creativity with regard to kills.
The best of the three? Probably part 4. They all have an odd charm to me. The security guard in the beginning “Jesus ain’t got nothing to do with this place.” The random Haddonfield Hillbillies. The minister/preacher picking up Loomis. With you on Tina. I admit to having a crush on Wendy Kaplan back in the day which could be swaying my judgment.
These are the types of takes I like lol H4 and H5 are really close. I think H4 is slightly better written and has better atmosphere, characters, and ending. I think H5 has a better Myers, cinematography, and overall third act though. So I'd give the edge to H4 but they're both bangers that aren't leaving my top five any time soon.
I've always thought this great companion to the original I think explains some things only thing missing is some flash backs I wanna see what they did how they did not just say it or vaguely allude to it I wanna see more kid Michael wanna see them conjure up the demon doing the curse why Michael and them helping that'd probably go into second one and maybe other two lol
Nick, what do you think about what the timeline is according to you with the overall arcing timeline of these movies is the films all on their own or are they just all storyline if you don’t mind talking about that? But I do not play favorites I will go with any other ones fine the best one that will be Halloween resurrection I don’t care if it failed in box office or filled with fans. I just want to know what you think of the timeline is and your reasons for it because without looking at the trilogy from David Green’s Halloween films, which is good and awesome. I love them a lot. They are pretty cool. I love them.. But I just wanna know what you think. What is in the timeline according to you and is there Gordon Green connected to either of them all and why would it be kind of out all the other films when I thought that you could just talk to us or think about the timeline is . But the thinners is Derek Gordon greens movies are they Ray Cannon are are not necessary? I want to know what you think. About it I hope that you make a video about this

I have never been a huge fan of Halloween 5. And no, it wasn't because of the house. I didn't even notice that until I was in my 20s. I guess I just went along with it. Tina? Not a fan. But it's funny that there are a lot of people who hate her. The cops? I think they are hilarious. Rachel's death? Not really. I might just not enjoy the structure of it... I think it's the guy who wore the mask. That chin just comes out of nowhere. I have never liked that mask. Well, mentioning the chin, it might just be the actor. I have always let that chin get into my mind and mess with my appreciation of the movie. I prefer the theatrical of 6. I didn't like the producer's cut much at all. Most fans say that it's the theme being back in it, and that's supposed to make it good...? Many claim 6 used the same kind of music as the original, and what the original was. But if you think about it, the original used the music of the day, too. And that's what 6 did. It used the rock soundtrack and rock-score. The guitars, I think they are guitars, doing the Halloween theme was always interesting. When I watched the producer's cut, a lot of originality in 6 was taken away. It brought it back to the original, while I would consider that great in another movie, it just didn't work for me. The 4th is probably my favorite. I didn't find the mask too distracting. It looks cheap because it is just a Halloween mask. I really like the setting, and the story. I guess the ending might have made part 5 better if they followed through with it. But I can't be sure. The return of The Shape basically made everyone's day. Even though I love the third movie the second best in the franchise, I really liked that they brought Michael back. It's between 6 and 4. But 5's chin is a sore spot.
The chin 😭😭😭 I’m with you on 6. I’ve always preferred the theatrical version. I just didn’t like how weird the producers cut got. It was too much, for me
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn The first time I watched the producer's cut I thought I was going to be amazed because of all the talk. But I wasn't too thrilled that Michael was stopped by a bunch of rocks. I mean, Ends has something different from the norm, too, but the idea that runes could have stopped him is funny. Someone should go and remake the original with someone tossing rocks at The Shape. They smash into his head and blood flows from underneath the mask. But suddenly those rocks inadvertently create a rune and he just stops walking. I just had a worse idea. Someone comes trying to rescue everyone from him until they notice what's happening. This person just happens to be the person who eventually gets Tommy into this stuff. They add another bunch of rocks not touching the first. Then they kick away the first rune allowing this next bunch to take over. Michael starts doing the Crispin Glover dance from Friday the 13th The Final Chapter. That's just because I really want to see others try that dance. It'll be the actual reason The Shape, Michael Myers, is truly known as the boogyman. Because ever since I have been a fan in the 80s boogying always meant dancing. So I have always had the idea of Michael doing some sort of dance. Back in the 2000s I pictured him bending his legs smacking his thighs, the mouth hole opening and him yelling something. Nothing coherent, maybe just a "Woo-hoo!" And he starts doing something else really stupid. Possibly even a moonwalk. I do hope you can still take The Shape seriously after my weirdness.
Halloween 4 filmed all the way across the country from the original Halloween? like across the country from Pasadena, California? it was filmed in Utah
Agree with everything lol Tina was hilarious and pretty lol each one got better I think four was good but kind of slow at times and five had better pace better kills funny spots six was awesome always liked that one best better kills good pacing jokes House looks better wanted to see more about the history of the cult always wanted it to connect to Halloween three somehow like that dude running the cult in that was this guys father and when he died he took over it doubtful but thatd be cool connection don't know about the tv maybe they made a movie about what happened that night in seventy eight and instead of hiring new actors to play the roles from first one they just used scenes from original lol
This whole thorn trilogy should never have happened. The ending of part 4 had a fantastic set up. 5 is terrible. I mean ,fine lets create something new, but the thorn introduction was slapped on with ZERO and i mean zero direction. Then boom six years goes by and we get CURSE which for what is was designed to do is somewhat welcomed. The cast is solid, at least someone tried to finish this seriously unnecessary story arc.
But I’ll always argue, that isn’t 5’s fault. They introduced imagery to tease something for future sequels, but they didn’t give us the lackluster explanation. That belongs to 6
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn no..ha, I was in a theater when I got to see part 4 opening day..theatre was packed. The audience had fun with the film. Flash forward almost 1 year later, again opening day. Packed theater.. Boos, all around. The two films had very distinct reactions. Hell I felt like I had just seen the worst film ever. Part 6 had the job of explaining the goofy symbol and man in black that was introduced in 5. So no. It's great that you enjoy the film. Good for you. But for me this was the film that hurt the franchise way worse then part 3.
@@robertchambers6344 I think you’re arguing a different point. Audience reception isn’t what’s important here. I pointed that out in the video, that Halloween 5 burned all the good will Halloween 4 had earned back. That’s beside the point. The fact is, Halloween 5 didn’t say, “Michael is in an incestuous cult and because of a galactic curse, he must kill all of his bloodline to be set free”. That was Halloween 6. 5 showed a symbol. A symbol that meant nothing, at the time. A symbol that Moustapha specifically wanted thrown into the film, in hopes of piquing the interest of the audience for “what comes next”. 6 could’ve explained the man in black an entirely different way, and ignored the shot of a small tattoo. But the creative team decided to dive in and try to tie it all together. I respect their efforts, and I enjoy Halloween 6, but that was their decision. That’s just a fact.
The only flaw in the family thing is if he was supposed to kill hos family why did he stop with sister and not try to kill parents why when he sees the family members why doesn't he just kill them there instead killing random people and their friends their friends or boyfriends and girlfriends he's killed more random nonfamily members than family members the perception of you're safe if you're not related to him is very flawed you just have to be wrong place wrong time or know wrong people you might not even know your friend or girlfriend is related to Michael with his history you dead lol he'll save family members for last and they'll get away unless its one of those like this or resurrection lol

I’d want to keep 5 canon. That movie is crucial to any future arc for Jamie. But I agree, I’d like to see this timeline revisited
Hot take (anywhere but here): 5
You’re my kind of person lol
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn You can't have my Bud Light. (You may be too young for that)
Oh I’m about to be 30 lol. And I’m a bud light aficionado lol
I don't like H5 at all, but I absolutely love H4 and H6 (theatrical cut).
Halloween 5 is ok in my book. Not the best for sure. I think if they hadn't made the Meyers house a Gothic mansion and cutout the goofy cop scenes it would have been better. Also if they had toned Tina character down just a bit. Nowhere near as bad as Ressurection.
Tina is my hero, but I can’t argue with the cops. Just truly unnecessary
My favorite is curse unrated directors cut
I need to give 5 another chance, good excuse to upgrade to blu ray. 4 and 5 have always been lesser on my ranking, maybe I'm missing something or the mask takes me out of it That much...
When you go back to 5, try to focus on the aesthetic of the film, and Danielle’s performance. The Nic Cage mask can definitely be distracting, but there’s a lot to like here
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn I like 5 more than 4 I do remember that
I respectively disagree, but I respect your opinion, and you state your case very well (and present your case very professionally).
Thank you, Rob! I know I’m in the minority here, and there’s probably not a “right” answer. But I always love seeing comments like this
Halloween 5 killed off Rachel in the first 20 min and made Jamie a mute like what !!!???? lol
H4 was easily the best of thorn story movies but Mike looked the best in H6 tho
4 has the better kills and story but 5 was shot better. Always watch them back to back.
Isn’t it wild to hear people say they can’t stand doing that? 4 and 5 are perfect back to back
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn they really are a perfect Halloween double feature.
Funny enough, I’ve had people tell me on here that I’m a contrarian. Couldn’t be further from the truth. Maybe I just have terrible taste 😂
Surprised you didn’t mention Rachel or Jamie’s roles in H5 and H6. IMO their deaths and overall treatment were the biggest cons in both films
You can! I’m pretty sure Lee has sent them out before if people ask!
I should point out that i enjoyed curse of Michael Myers more then 5 part 4 was a return to form imo.
The security guard in the beginning “Jesus ain’t got nothing to do with this place.”
The random Haddonfield Hillbillies. The minister/preacher picking up Loomis.
With you on Tina. I admit to having a crush on Wendy Kaplan back in the day which could be swaying my judgment.
Let it sway your judgment. Let it flow through you. Team Tina is a movement
These are the types of takes I like lol
H4 and H5 are really close. I think H4 is slightly better written and has better atmosphere, characters, and ending. I think H5 has a better Myers, cinematography, and overall third act though. So I'd give the edge to H4 but they're both bangers that aren't leaving my top five any time soon.
So long as you don’t hate 5, we’re good lol
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn I only hate Kills lmao
@@whitechocolate7777 ah yes I remember that lol. I’ll allow it 😂
I've always thought this great companion to the original I think explains some things only thing missing is some flash backs I wanna see what they did how they did not just say it or vaguely allude to it I wanna see more kid Michael wanna see them conjure up the demon doing the curse why Michael and them helping that'd probably go into second one and maybe other two lol
About it
I hope that you make a video about this
I like the thorn trilogy
Tina just did not do it for me at all as a lead.
Halloween 4 is the best
H5 is as bad as Resurrection….
Categorically false
After the huge disappointment & disaster that Halloween ends was I wonder why Malek Akkad ain’t doing anything to make up for it..us fans deserves better..& don’t hit me the whole “ we gotta tv series coming “ ain’t nobody wanted a tv series..what us fans want is a franchise revival with a good solid movie
Now, I loved Halloween Ends, but I definitely see what you mean. I don’t want a series. I’ve never wanted that for Myers. I fear dark times are ahead
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn You liked Ends???? Wow! Ok…well uhhh we all have the right to our own opinion 🙄😂 but yeah..this franchise needs to be revived & taken seriously so Malek Akkad…wake the fuck up & start acting like YOU 🫵 CARE! cause ending the original timeline with the product you gave us with Halloween Ends wasn’t it!
You should know…you walked out the 1st Hollywood premiere cause you was so disgusted..well Malek..DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!
The chin 😭😭😭
I’m with you on 6.
I mean, that’s the bottom of the country, to the top of the country lol. Quite literally across the country
