Why I Like The “Bad” Halloween Movies

Recently, I was asked what it is about the “underdog” movies in the Halloween franchise that makes me gravitate towards them.
Truthfully, I don’t really know. I’ve never sought out for it to be that way.
But, it got me thinking. So, I wanted to discuss that a bit, as well as open up on the toxicity that persists amongst the Halloween franchise (on both sides)

I believe that most fans are good people. I truly believe that. I think it is a very small minority that are toxic. Recently, Piz has mentioned that he has had his life threatened. That is utterly nuts. These are movies. But I don’t look at Halloween fans or horror fans, as a whole, as bad people. I believe that most of us are good people. 🙂

I never really got the people who diss Halloween Kills but stick up or defend for Halloween: Curse Of Michael Myers theatrical cut over “messiness and bad storytelling”. I’ve openly said for many years that Halloween III: Season Of The Witch is my favorite film next to 1978 (and I even prefer the tv cut for ‘78). Then when Kills came out - it reminded me why I love the franchise and made me appreciate 6 theatrical cut in a whole new way. And when I say I like Halloween 6 theatrical cut and Kills more than 2018, H2 81, and H20 - I get side eyed lol.
But at the end of the day - stick to your guns, not what you think you want others to hear. I’d rather someone with balls embrace what I think are hot takes than mend to fit a majority consensus (not saying you can’t be an “average” Halloween fan out there it’s fine). But what I see in the fandom of this franchise in particular is embracing group think and propping what certain aspects are “needed” in the franchise on a pedestal. Even gatekeeping at times too lol.
I ignore them and as should everyone else. Good video Nick!

But RZH1 is genuinely horrible imo, 5 is borderline unenjoyable, Resurrection is so bad it's good and Kills is just so messy and misguided i dont get much enjoyment from it after my first viewing. But hey, 9/13 movies in your franchise being 7/10 - 10/10 is not good. Especially for a horror franchise

As a kid, I grew up as a huge fan of the Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween franchises. I really began being a fan of these franchises when I was in the 4th grade. That is when I began collecting them (VHS). Those franchises were literally my childhood. So, I still love them to this day. I grew up with Friday 1-9, Nightmare 1-7, and Halloween 1-6. Those films were my childhood, so I love ALL of them to death. Halloween H20 came out while I was already a fan of the franchises for a few years.
P.S. If you like gothic horror, settings, and aesthetics; you should love the Universal Classic Monsters. I became a fan of them in 2004, and absolutely LOVE them just as much as I love Friday, Nightmare, and Halloween.

I’m a fan of all of these movies. I can see the good and the flaws in each. There are so many good people in this community, but like anything there are the few bad apples and I’m convinced that those are the people who are new to the franchise and didn’t grow up with it. The amount of hate and death threats that I got anytime I’d give my opinion on Halloween Ends was astounding. What happened to being able to agree to disagree? I could list off so many movies that some people love that I hate, but I’d never stoop to the level that was to me. At the end of the day, let’s remember, it’s just a movie. Do better and let’s be kind.

Well, it's 109 something. Exercised on my bike while listening to some of my usual Summer music. Just got done watching my first official summer movie for the year. A troma sex comedy. It was pretty good. i liked the charm.
Anyway. In terms of franchises. It's Friday the 13th and Nightmare on elm street. So I'll go through the list of franchises and my views on them.
    Friday the 13th 1-7 and X. Part 8 is a guilty pleasure.
A nightmare on elm street 1-4. Part 1 being my least favorite of the first 4 movies and part 5 being a guilty pleasure.
    Halloween 1, 3, and 4.
    Child's play 1-3, and Cult.
    Scream 1 and 4.
Don't think I need to rate any more.
I love the first Halloween movie, a classic and easily one of the best slasher films of all time.
3 is an awesome detour and very much of it's time. In the same vein as Blow out and Looker.
and 4 is just an overall good to decent sequel to the first movie.
I have never ever gotten the appeal of part 2. I watched it on Halloween night and the lead up to Halloween night as a kid. Although I know the film up and down, etc. I've still never understood the appeal. Two years ago, I gave it a rewatch...and I am still scratching my head. The only time it felt like a slasher movie was when the couple get murdered in the therapy pool.
The characters are dull and boring as hell. I couldn't care less about any of them. One of them slips on blood and passes out. So he's out of the movie. What the hell?! Laurie is in a hospital bed for 97% of the movie. Only near the end of the movie do we get Laurie. Just total BS. The film was the director's first film he had ever shot and you can tell. So not even childhood/teen nostalgia of watching Halloween 2 on TV on Halloween night could save it.
I did watch Halloween 5 last year. MTV2 around Halloween time would air Halloween 4 and 5 and it was all on a routine. So I knew exactly when to watch it when it would air again, when the commercials would pop up, etc. So by the 3rd time I decided to tape it on VHS and so I watched 4 and 5 over and over and over again.
Here is the thing....I always knew part 5 was bad. I thought the whole psychic thing was stupid, making her mute was stupid, etc. I hadn't watched 5 in years...till last year. So I gave it a rewatch last year as part of my Halloween marathon. Just like part 2 the year before...and ya...did not enjoy part 5. I did enjoy it more then I did part 2. I enjoyed it right up to the Halloween party. The Halloween party in my mind is when the movie just totally falls over and loses it and just keeps going down hill.
Never saw Rob Zombie's Halloween 2. Funny thing is, my mom grew up with the original Halloween. A causal fan and she really liked Rob Zombie's remake. Me....I was like "Did I like it? ...." I watched it a second time and said "Ya. This aint for me." My grandfather, same thing. He liked Rob Zombie's remake as well. That's the only reason why I own the DVD,lol. Because my grandmother sent me a box of VHS and DVD tapes/discs that I didn't take from his collection and included was Rob Zombie's Halloween. So ya, I never saw it. Didn't care to. I already saw the first movie and didn't know what to think of it. After my second viewing, didn't want to watch it ever again. Of course I love House of 1000 corpses and The devil's rejects. I even really like 3 from hell.
I hate...no, DESPISE Halloween 2018. I hate Mcbride and Green. I consider them total and complete hacks. i was physically ANGRY after watching Halloween 2018. I had to FORCE my self to watch it to the end. I actually got up twice and walked off somewhere else and telling my self "just watch it. Finish it. No matter how painful." and I remember making a bag of popcorn, sitting down, and watching the train wreck before my and getting more and more angry and eating the popcorn as my only force of enjoyment and going "END ALREADY! END ALREADY....my god, how many much longer is this?!" pandering garage 'remember the ending to the first movie? Michael falls on the lawn and is in a specific position? NOW IT'S LAURIE. AREN'T WE SO CLEVER?!" my reaction to that was rolling my eyes in disgust and going "Unf**kingbelieveable! YOU GOT TO BE F**KING KIDDING ME?!" So I have totally boycotted Kills and Ends and always will. The Mcbride/Green trilogy NEVER EVER HAPPENED in my world. I totally deny their very existence. Other then to bash them for existing, lol....and the thing is.....I love Friday the 13th part 5. For a long time now I've said it's my favorite of the franchise. My favorite Elm street movie is part 2....and so the idea of a Halloween movie having a Michael Myers copy cat and all that....that MIGHT of appealed to me...but it's the wrong f**king writers and director.
And ya, Friday the 13th is my number one favorite franchise and yet I see horror youtube critics, horror fan articles, etc bashing Friday the 13th. Saying "they never did anything different." etc, and I am like "Your a freakin CHILD'S PLAY FAN!!!!! YOUR A HALLOWEEN FAN!!!!! Like those franchises/characters were so different." So I will only bash another franchise only in defense of Friday the 13th being bashed and bashed for something I consider to be pretty hypocritical because here is the thing - these are franchises. Franchises are SUPPOSE TO BE THE SAME MOVIE, but each movie is DIFFERENT ENOUGH. That describes literally every franchise in existence and Friday is very unique from movie to movie and that's one major reason why I love those movies so much. Jason evolves, and you had 2 of the movies that don't even have Jason as the killer in the movie!!!! Again, there is one youtuber who is known for this - aint gonna say their name, but I still enjoy his content. I agree with them about 55% of the time and I value their work and appreciate their voice, etc. I actually admire them to be honest, because they doesn't pander and I love that. They are like "This is who I am and I am gonna tell you what I think and that's it" and of course I am going "YA!!!!!!" there are several movie youtube channels I watch that are like that. Where I am like "I probably agree with this person like 30% of the time....but I still watch their content once in a while." I just find it ironic when a Child's play/Halloween fan would argue that Friday the 13th never did anything different...which I could easily argue back against them and then we get into "what really matters or counts" I guess as "different." it's not that I am angry or anything. I find it funny and ironic more then anything.
And the thing is, according to IMDB, I've liked and enjoyed a lot of bad movies.
Some of the films I've watched and loved or thought "That was actually pretty good" has got TERRIBLE reviews and ratings on IMDB. The sex comedy I just watched, has a 4.3 rating. In February of this year I watched a scifi sex comedy/musical. I loved it, It got a 3.8 ratings. Meanwhile, films I think are terrible, are total garage....get a 6.2 or even a 7.1 and I am just like "What the hell?!"
and you know, I often think to my self "like you don't like some 'bad movies' come on! Everybody likes some technically bad movies." and so I have no guilt for liking for instance, Iced from 88. Someone could easily go "Seriously....you like Iced from 88 but HATE Freddy vs Jason, or Halloween 2018?! You got no room to talk." And they are correct and vice versa. In fact, I wish I could really like, genuinely love Halloween 5. I really do, but I just can't do it.

I love the oddball ones too. For instance, people crap on the mask from H5, but I love it. Yes it’s different, but when I was a kid it scared the crap out of me. I also appreciated the change in style and bringing in that European/gothic approach. It felt different from what came before it.
I’m also with you about the fandoms. I remember as a kid, when DVDs first became a thing and the Nightmare on Elm Street boxed set was released, fans were going nuts praising it. I posted a comment on a message board saying I found it lackluster and would’ve liked more supplemental content. Personally I love deleted scenes above all other special features, and across the seven films included, you can’t tell me there weren’t some cool scenes that didn’t make the cut. But people shredded me for having the gall to say I wished there was more to it.

Won't lie the Halloween fandom makes me enjoy Halloween less. Whenever I engage with it a bit online I end up ditching Halloween totally for a few months. Its just super toxic and obnoxious. Worse still if I try to debate when people go elitist, I end up engaging in the bad behavior myself in doing so.
There are definitely fans who aren't crappy but the atmosphere and environment of the fandom is imo a nevative one much of the time.
I'm no huge fan of any direction the series has taken since H20. I don't care for Laurie and think she's wildly inconsistent and I miss the style and ties to Samhain from the first 6 films. But saying that, I get why people like H20, or 2018, or Kills or RZ's films, and I enjoy all of them just not as much as the earlier stuff. Which is fine. So I don't get why people are so aggressive towards the takes they don't enjoy as much, it's not as if there isn't a wide variety to choose from already. And we know historically no status quo will stick for too long in Halloween.
Anyway I unironically prefer Halloween 6 to the original and think the novelisation is better than both of those. What can you do.

Zombie's H2 is leagues better than the original H2 imo. And I say that as someone who saw the first one in theaters, so you'd think I would like it more just on nostalgia alone. Nope! The first one just drags, has some really insufferable characters, and has some truly terrible acting. Zombie's has some of the best scenes in the entire franchise. Of course it's not a perfect film (no film is) and his writing can be really, really bad. But when he nails it, he really nails it. Same goes with his first Halloween movie.
All that being said, I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on Ends, my man. I'm all for changing things up and 'subverting expectations,' but show some damn plot restraint with the very last movie of a trilogy, with some of the original actors' final appearances. And don't get me started on that limp romance subplot. Holy shit I've seen Hallmark movies with better chemistry and storylines.

I loved this video. I like the obscure and weird Halloween films. I like when they do something different but I still love the ones that are considered the best. I can appreciate the bad ones. You should do an updated ranking of all the Michael Myers masks!

H5: Not as boring as H4
H6: First one I saw in a theater
RZII: Scout Compton and Danielle Harris' performances
    Kills/Ends: Not REALLY bad
Can't defend Big Erection... that one has no redeeming virtues.

Great video, Nick! It’s so bizarre to me how some folks can get so wrapped up in their opinions on art that they get real ugly with it. However, I find sometimes with the negativity that it’s nice to just leave it there-give it no attention, let it die on the vine so to speak. In other words: love what you love, be who you are, and, as 311 wisely once sang, “fuck the naysayers ‘cause they don’t mean a thing”

I used to love Halloween II (1981) growing up and I still kinda do but it’s definitely overrated and a bit of a drag. I love Halloween III: Season of the Witch especially the score, aesthetics, and story. Halloween 5 I find to be decent but still very watchable mainly because of nostalgia (H4-H5 were my first Halloween movies I saw as a kid so I understand your love for H5), Halloween 6 The Producer’s cut imo a better version of the two cuts and I really enjoy that film and it’s a great double feature with Season of the Witch in terms of focusing more on the themes of Samhain and sacrifice. As for Halloween Kills and especially Ends I’ll always defend because Kills is a Halloween movie I dreamt for for years especially revisiting 1978 and seeing original Michael being absolutely badass (my favorite Halloween movie theater experience) while Ends was a breath of fresh air and wasn’t a movie I wanted but one I needed, with its themes of overcoming addiction, trauma, or inner struggles

Part of it is nostalgia. especially with the first 4. But honestly since part 5 (which is absolutely horrible)horrible).. I think fans keep hoping for a truly great sequel, remake, homage etc. and we will probably never get that. Lightening in a bottle.

If this helps anyone bridge the gap to movies in the series that feel off or inconsistent to you, trying thinking of each entry as a retelling of an urban legend of the boogeyman. As they get passed down some elements remain and some fluctuate. Seeing each entry with less focus on the linear timeline helped me appreciate them for their differences. On a rewatch of part 5 I viewed it as not the sequel to 4 but a tale of the urban legend of the boogeyman and that allowed expectations to not color the movie and enjoy it for what it is. I initially saw H Ends as a bad idea for the third movie of a trilogy. But taken as an individual movie, that story arc is is a great idea and a fresh take.

    • @TheLostRiverDriveIn
      @TheLostRiverDriveIn  3 месяца назад

And that’s a take I will always understand and respect. As an end to a trilogy, I can understand the issues with that. But as a standalone, it really is a good story

Since I love resurrection, Rob’s h2 & season of the witch; I can say wholeheartedly I am right and you are wrong! Yes you reading this who doesn’t think those are top 3 Halloween sequels because you’re wrong they are 🔥
That said people now love 3 and the phantom menace so I can’t wait for y’all to be converted to what I’ve been always preaching 🙏🏻 hail dark jar-jar also Friday 3D, takes manhattan & Freddy vs Jason are the best! The final chapter sucks & the new blood is better.
The fog & in the mouth of madness are John’s best films
The return of the Texas chainsaw massacre is the best of the franchise & hating it shows that you only do things that are righteous or lawful is because you know you would get caught or eventually mess up, not because you know what right and wrong.
