    Even if it doesn't improve cable management as such, being able to easily get at the connectors when say adding a hard drive or any upgrade requiring power cable, so much easier than having to dig about or doing a full rewire. I'm for it, I'm also for motherboard connectors being on the backside. Clean as hell builds!

      @@Njazmo lol i get what you're saying but he's also saying with the rats nest of cables even if you don't care about how it looks it's still a pain to get to the connectors on the PSU or to add mechanical HDDs if you need too since the cables take up so much room. That can kind of be solved by getting custom length cables, which i did for my 011 Dynamic, but then when you change cases you have to spend another $150-$200 to get custom length cables for that case. Luckily I didn't have to do that. i posted about this problem on reddit and CableMod actually reached out to me and sent me free custom length cables, which came in over $200.

    Gamer's Nexus actually did a deep dive into cable compatibility recently and it's actually a huge deal making sure you have the right cables. Which is kind of silly? They just carry current? But I guess it's a thing, so, it's not terrible that Corsair is starting to ensure that people are using the right ones.

    • @matasa7463
      @matasa7463 Год назад +14

      The problem is more complicated than that.
      First, you have 3 different types of voltages needed: 12V, 5V, and 3.3V. Each one of them is meant for different use cases, you'll need to have the right voltage being sent down the right power rails. If you take a look at the 24pin connector, you'll see there's a variety of different voltages at different locations on the plug. On the motherboard side, the pinouts are standardized, but the PSU side isn't standardized as of yet, so if you use the wrong cable, and you might end up sending 12V down the 5V or the 3V power rail, and something will go boom inside the PC.

    I feel like all you need to do is look at the past decade+ of case design to realize why nobody had really done this before. It's only fairly recently that the MAJORITY of case designs are based around the idea of PSU in the basement or tucked away behind the motherboard, while the rest of the components get to life comfortably upstairs. Years ago, it was always PSU up top, and you were lucky to have much room to run your cables behind the motherboard, let alone have ample space for EASY cable routing. Back then, "Different" layouts were considered more premium, and you definitely paid for it. Probably essentially the same reason why having connectors on the reverse of the motherboard never really made much sense until now. The whole "Behind the motherboard tray" area was always an afterthought until the past few years. Now that's basically a priority.

Aside from how PSU cables are routed (A few manufacturers are putting Mobo Connectors on the back of the boards now too), hanging GPUs (many of which are the same size as motherboards now) from PCIe connectors seems pretty precarious as well. Need to shift towards making everything surface mountable like motherboards, or having multiple hole patterns to allow for multiple different mounting arrangements. But I know every component and ever case is different, so this might be a bit of a mess of standards. But it could help alleviate a lot of the big headaches of building a PC.

My biggest issue though, is using micro-fit, which less robust than mini-fit and will be prone to issues with tight bends, but not be an issue with lower gauge wire. Looks like they're using 18ga. Not to mention, it's a PITA to sleeve for people like me, but that doesn't matter for 99.99999999% of people. And the reason it doesn't have 12VHPWR on the PSU side is because Corsair has stated they won't be using it on the PSU side, for a couple of reasons, even on their ATX3 PSU's. And honestly, no real benefit to having it on the PSU side TBH.

    I think you are going to start seeing cases get fatter, for Cable Management, and PSUs like this. On the Window side, additional space allowed for vertical GPU mount allowing Air clearance to window. (especially when GPUs start becoming the size of a Loaf of Bread) (I think additional 3" on the window panel with more than two slots for mounting fat GPUs will come around)
    also Having GPUs become exclusively module (rather than your typical PCIE 16 slot fitting) I could see GPUs on an ITX sized Mother Board and a new cable plug system to replace the PCIE ribbon cable. I could actually see the option of mounting the GPU in the same PC case, or opting to have its own dedicated ITX sized case, that would have independent cooling and PSU.
    It would be awesome if building a GPU was more like building the rest of the PC.

    1. L-shaped connectors on the power cables that connect to the PSU side so that the protrusion is minimal and doesn't hit the side panel of chasis
    2. Due above, the connector ports on PSU should be rotated 90-deg to facilitate the way the cables will bend left/right. The position of the connector ports can be optimized in a way to prevent obstruction between the installed cables
    3. Motherboard ATX power connector ports should be facing sideways instead of upwards which could improve cable routing effectiveness and aesthetics

    I thought this would be for a case where the PSU is mounted vertically like the Lian Li O11-family, but I think it’s on the wrong side, and other vertical PSU cases wouldn’t work, like the SSUPD Meshlicious. Maybe it’s because I always plug in all of the cables (I don’t like to lose cables in their boxes for fear of mixing them up) to my PSU. However that length use-case does bring a good point

    I used this in my Corsair 5000D case, Perfect for it. I don't like the tiny connectors though. I wish they used standard size ones for high current loads (Motherboard, GPU).

    on the cases with the PSU at the bottom you could mount it fan side up and just have the connectors on the glass panel side, it'd look awful, but it would work

    One issue I do see with this design is the restrictions imposed on airflow options. For example, on some setups you may want to flip the PSU to use it as an extra source of exhaust air flow.

    Is this one of those power supplies where you can rotate it through 180 (mount upside down) to change the side the cables comes out of?

  • @ronkemperful
    @ronkemperful Год назад

    Interesting power supply. Perhaps installing this innovative power supply upside down in the cases with solid backs would be a solution? Whenever possible I install my power supplies upside down, that way the air supply for the power supply is drawn from the interior of the case instead from the narrow gap under the case that could be further obstructed by a carpet or by a bunch of dust bunnies or discarded candy wrappers (yes my room is disgusting!). Upside downing the power supply also adds the pull of the power supply fan to help exhaust heat from the motherboard. This can only be down in basement-less cases or in cases with holes for ventilation below the motherboard, of course.

    This looks so much better than the traditional standard power supply units. It's such a pain to not be able to access the plug ports without having to first remove it from the case just to plug something else into it. We need this as a new standard, and case manufacturers need to be mindful of this. There's so much wasted space that could be better used for cable management to hide things away more cleanly.

  • @asehome2527
    @asehome2527 Год назад

    the power supply is made for the o11 crown which its on the side and the cables would be going up instead to the side. imo in a standard 4000d airflow the PSU would be weird and can easily not work with many cases.
