Leo!! I have to stop watching your videos! But I can't as they're too good, funny and informative to the max!!
I'm having an early mid-life crisis! I just bought an RTX 4080 Aorus Master, this 1000w shift PSU and a Lian Li Lancool iii, as my O11 is too small for that GPU!!! Thanks to all the KitGuru team for all your opinions, ideas, and the no BS approach to the manufacturers!
How well does your PSU fit in your Lancool 3?
@@andynguyen8824 Its perfect Andy, I thought there would be little space but there's loads. The Aorus master has room too even with my cpu cooler attached to the front. I had to move the provided 3 140 fans to the top of the case and put my own arctic 3 x120 fans on the front, as I have an arctic liquid Freezer ii 280mm. That 280mm rad is thick and does not fit on top of the case. So I turned the front panel around to provide more room for intake. Its actually working really really well! the pump cable's from cooler are alittle tight but thats cause of how massive the aorus master is!
Setup
3 x120 fans at front with the 2x140 fans on the arctic cooler all as intake.
3 x140 fans outtake on top and the 140 outtake at back. Really cool temps. GPU has not gone above 62*. Case is maybe max 50*. The gpu does need a custom fan curve as the gigabyte software UI is very poor but does work.
I removed the drive bays too, so there is so much room for air flow overall, in this case. It's the best PC I have ever built.
Im having the same crisis.... i have a 4080 back ordered for about 2 weeks, the asus one, and i looked up PSU. This one fits the bill perfectly in my 5000x case. I mean, its not totally a waste. I am moving my 3070 into the kids machine (which has a 1070) and i'll sell the 1070. That other machine will also get a AMD 5700 before they are out of stock.
I was mostly annoyed with how some games lately play like crap mostly due to not being optimized, but this should fix that
I can't believe it's taken THIS long for someone to think of putting the connectors on the side of the PSU. This is going to be a game changer for future builds.
Thank you so much for the excellent video!
Great to see some power supply videos - very informative and well put together mate!
I ordered the 1000W Shift with a 4000D case for my upcoming build, so this video is basically exactly what I wanted to see. Thanks so much! You've just earned a new sub.
Can you let me know how that goes? Im currently rocking the 4000D airflow and looking into the shift series
@@davidc9496 It went really well! I'm not used to those types of cables, so it took some time getting them into a position where I could actually close the right side panel of the case. The modular ports being on the side of the PSU, however, is an absolute Godsend!
Is the Shift a game changer in your view, or are you happy with a regular PSU for your next build?
Yup for higher end case designs with cable management back panel spacing. Not so much in the many budget cases like Tecware, IONZ, gamemax, AeroCool.
Meh...
Happy AX1600i 4090 :)
I think it's rather niche, but can be good in some situations.
Is it narrower to allow for more cable room on the side? A lot of cases won't have that spare room.
Perfect timing! The PSU in my Corsair 5000D just died, now I know what to pick up as my replacement! Thanks KitGuru!
It makes sense, But unfortunately most cases are poorly designed even from big name brands. Most don't even give you an inch of cable management space on the side behind motherboard, This is what needs fixing the most in my opinion.
Awesome video Leo. Enjoyed this thanks 🎉
That is very clever indeed
I worry about cases which don't have much space on that side of the case, but for those that have, it will will be super handy to exploit
Great video Leo! 👍 Very convenient design and will definitely be much better when switching out parts that need additional or differing PSU connections....but....for that money they could have made the cables look a bit better. It's gearing up for a range of cables and cases from Corsair, designed with these PSU's in mind I reckon.
Only better if you have a case for which you can open the other side-panel. Many people have a case for which that is not possible (I do).
I was feeling that when i was trying to unplug some cables and stuff and get a new SATA drive in for a 2.5 SSD.... Big hands, im like F this!! lol... Im sold.
I like it - won’t work in my Fractal Torrent but definitely welcome innovation. I really like the Seasonic Synchro/Connect range too for trying to make cables less of a hassle.
Top idea from Corsair! Great work Leo!
That tiny power supply at the beginning was love at first sight.😍🥰☺
A great redesign of a psu, although some chassis may struggle with clearances I like the design
Yeah it’s a nicely designed unit for sure.
A new video by Leo; excellent!
My initial reaction is 'close, but no cigar'. It's almost there, but not quite. I see the improvement in maintainability but there is no real reason to have the one cable that doesn't change - the 24 pin ATX - on the side: keep it on the back and free up some space. To reduce cable strain the cables that are on the side should come with 90 degree or 45 degree angle brackets or the sockets themselves should be angled at 45 degrees. Remember that there's generally a decent amount of space behind a PSU (you can usually remove a drive cage in ATX and mATX cases if necessary), but not necessarily so between the side of the PSU and the side of the case. Having the connectors with differing orientations seems odd and possibly confusing, to say the least. KISS applies. KISS applies again with the sockets: why the variety? My Superflower PSU (SF-850F14MG) has all the sockets the same - 24 pin ATX excepted - and the different end configurations are handled by the plugs and cables.
I know you said that this was an intro video rather than a full review, so herewith some questions and issues you might care to investigate for your full review. How much space between the PSU and back panel is required? Remember to account for any noise-damping material. I don't think that the cabling looks any neater than the old style but will ease maintenance. Those who like having the fan facing upwards will be disappointed. You mentioned that the connectors are small: does this mean that the cables are thinner? And are they safe, particularly when bent? (Might be worth checking after the back of the case has been closed for a day or three.)
why would you face the fan up? for screws to fall into, or to choke it, or if you work for the verge?
@@mainsource8030 Airflow. Check out the Adamant IT channel for one professional who prefers the PSU fan to face up.
This could be a godsend in ITX cases, depending on the compatibility
really good video. thanks for the info
Great video. Didn’t think a power supply video could be interesting. ❤
Very cool. I am totally gonna get the rm1000x shift psu as a upgrade for my cooler master td300 matx build. :)
Quite a nice idea from Corsair. Options are always a good thing.
These new psu are something I'm going to have to check out further. Looking at a 1209 watt psu for upcoming upgrades to my current system.
nice change for ease of access. hope they're as reliable as the previous regular front in back out ones
Curious is the new RM1200X physical size the same? Thanks for the good presentation and I like it but I'll wait for one of the i variables because I want to see everything on ICUE. Just moved from the RM850i to the latest HX1000i and will consider the equivalent side cable mounted version when it comes along as even with the Torrent I'm using it might allow for shorter cable runs.
Just got this from best buy today, can't wait to install and replace my 750w
I just ordered the 1200W one, I'm going to use it in the O11 XL. I don't use the Hard Drive cages and have removed them but it will be a lot easier to have the plugs facing up instead of in front facing the grommets. Definitely nice! Cable management breeze!
Let me know what
You think when you get it please.
@@stickyfingers9710 Game changing not really, ease of use! Hell yeah! So the O11 XL when slotting in the PSU makes the connectors face up to the top instead of sideways to the front. Makes life easier plugging things in, taking out. I don't have to remove the PSU to unplug something. So much better!
@@kittleeagle did your 12pwr cable come with or did you order one
@@Jason_Bover9000 I use cablemod
@@kittleeagle so you didn't get the 12vhpwr corsair 600 watt cable right now im just using a 3060ti with evga supernova g7 850w power supply im thinking of in the future i don't know anything about cablemod but I heard on the 12vhpwr cable you need a corsair psu that is compatible for that cord 12vhpwr cable is extremely hard to find must be really good
Great review...Just purchased the 1000w Shift and it fit perfectly into my NZXT H7 Flow case which has just enough room without worrying about tight bends. It has made a nice difference as no more stress whenever having to change cables. The 12v HPWR cable works perfectly for my 4090 and overall a nice change in design for a PSU though all the new ATX 3.0 PSU's seem a bit on the high price side but if it gives me a good 7 years plus usage then I will be happy.. I will update here if anything comes up, good or bad...
You only use the 2 6+2, when it needs 4?
How did it go with the 1000w and the 4090?
awesome - i think its time I picked a new one up for my aging system
Hey Leo, thanks for doing this video; I thank your camera man, too. Li was wondering about this. It looks like it is worth it, to get the shift. YaY🔥
Great review 👍 😊 Would the rm1000x shift fit with ease in a Corsair 4000d airflow case or not?
Great video as always Leo, however looks to be a solution for a non-problem imo. It took me literally less than 3 minutes to swap out my old gpu to the 40-series including the cables. (In a phanteks p-600s)
Plus not to mention not being able to fully utilise the basement for most typical cases and just brings the cable mess to the front.
I was thinking this. I did a load of re-cabling recently and it took me about 1 minute. I can see these PSU not fitting in some less wide cases as you need a good inch of clearance to the side and tat would be tight in something like a Meshify, P360a etc.
It's a nice touch. Typical one of those "Why haven't anyone done this sooner" scenarios. The only thing on the downside of this is for people that are building vertical builds, they have to chose a traditional PSU instead in most cases.
great idea from corsair but i would like to know if you have a case with the psu at the top or the back on it's side is it still function
Nice review. i wonder whether the shift would fit into a Corsair Carbide 275R which makes 21 cm wide.
Compatible with corsair 4000D airflow?
Nice video. Between the RM1000X shift (160€) and the HX1000i (200€), which one would you choose for a i9 13900k + rtx 3090? Thanks!
I would bet some cases could block that side of the PSU because normally there is nothing there.
But yes, some advantages in regular cases with that side open. It' also stops the PSU cable from fighting for space with the HDD cage that is usually in the front of the shroud.
I want one now. Cheers Leo 😮
Depending on the case, width could be amazingly helpful if you are changing equipment quite regularly. If you are width limited then really useless as you cannot fit the power supply into your case and put the side panel on. So very much case dependant, not an issue for my corsair 1000D but would be for many other cases
Thank You Leo
Would be interesting to see other PSU brands do this as well
I have an obsidian 500d case so adding/removing anything was a nightmare. I got an 850 shift after I got my 4070 ti, and it made the build so much easier. There’s barely enough access to get the psu in or out with cables attached.
I’m ordering one soon
it's a nice idea. Trouble is I am using a Fractal Torrent Compact now and this won't ever work. Not only I still use a Corsair RM 650 and I was looking to upgrade to a compact "120mm like" EVGA supernovas as the HDD cage in the front of the PSU bay is basically unusable due to the length of the Corsair that uses a 140mm fan.. but I guess I hope my unit will hold until I really have to get an ATX 3.0 psu.
This would work brilliantly with the motherboards that have the connectors on the back, perhaps its a sign of what's to come.
Nice cabinet btw. What model is that? I'm btw using Bluray drives, and likes to have USB/SD-card etc. in the front. Can I modify it to suit my need for those to get bay space?
So what is the rated amp age of these mini cable connectors? So far none of my legacy power supply connectors have melted as they seem rated for the power they are transferring.
This is an excellent video. The effort that is made to convey the ease of use of these new psus cannot be understated.
I like these. Good on Corsair.
I have been thinking about changing my current Corsair 850 psu which is several years old. Wonder if it comes with Fish and Chips?
I wish he had shown if the 3.5 caddy is now usable, since my 5000D case has no room for it with the cables coming out the back of my current power supply.
will a corsair rm1200x shift series, 1200w, 80+ gold fit in side in a lian-li compatible lancool ii im abit worried lol .i think it will seems more wide then your case you fitted it in
thanks, Corsair RMx Shift power supplie 👍👍
Did the native 12 volt high power cable come with the Corsair power supply? Or did you have to buy it yourself?
I'm wondering if I can get this to work ona be quiet 802 case. I've been buying parts for my pc since Christmas got almost everything I need now except a power supply and SSD
Would ATX shift PSU fit insade lian LI O11 air mini case, and would it make sence to use it, if a person dosen't intend to use hard drive cage ? I will need psu from 1200W to 1600W ( just for size reference ).
Im all for trying different things, however:
I think that looks LESS tidy. It could be slightly more convenient on the rare occurrence that you need to change cables. But, counterbalanced by totally proprietary (and awful) cables.
There's some potential here for SFF, but they would need a LH and RH version (or convertible), and a recessed side panel to offset the extra width created by the cables (cases are generally not designed of overwide PSUs.
If Corsair want to improve their product, what they should do is COMPLETELY SCRAP pigtail GPU cables (they look terrible), and include 90deg connectors (PCIE, 24pin, CPU) -or-
standardize their cables (maybe these smaller connectors could be the control measure for this), and just make a wide range of lengths and configurations readily available.
Excellent 👍🏽👍🏽
Hi, thx for vid. Can I use Corsair tx850m for 4090? Or do I need new PSU?
I'm holding out for a platinum or titanium rated supply before upgrading. Oh, and CableMod to start supplying custom kits to suit Corsair Type 5 cables.
5:49 wait, is that really a native cable when it uses regular 8 pin socket from the psu? other had a special connector that even has the pin12+4 pin layout on the psu
Hello. Is it safe for the psu to have the fan facing down?
Would have been cool to have a native 12vhpwr connection but Interesting idea
It depends what you mean by native - the 12VHPWR cable cable attached to the RTX 4080 connects to two of the PCIe connector on the power supply which looks fine to me.
Leo
Now imagine this with all the cables having a variable 90 degree angle (up down left right) when plugged into the psu, to remove yet another bend from them and to route them in nice straight lines in groups
maybe in 2-3 years?
sorry but does it come with the 4090 cable thingy? or do i have to buy one for it im new in pic building hope you could help me :)
I guess it really depends on the case if its better or not, but nice to have a choice.
Its not going to work well in my asus ap201 case.
Could you review the Thermaltake PF3 power supply?
This is a great concept, but using a coolermaster haf700 berserker, would have to cut the bracket off above the vertical psu mount.
Convenient only if the cable management space behind the motherboard has enough space for the cables sticking straight out and you being able to close the back of the case
leo you really made me stick with that video and i honestly thought after a few minutes id be clicking out
From the Shifter to the Seasonic Syncro and Connect...all looking for a problem to solve.
I get the idea that this new Corsair Shift is a life saver for the Obsidian 500D case where the psu cover is not removable.
When did they start covering PSU? My case doesn't come with any access from right panel to psu.
I have a Caselab STH10 case, how am I going to plug all the cable?
Hello, What's the watercooling brand please ?
Such a simple idea that makes sense. Makes you wonder why it hasn't been around longer.
how wide (mm) the case for recommendation to using this psu rmx 1000w shitf, dude ??
Solution for a non issue. Small form factor cases or scenarios where the intake must be swapped (bottom to top, when bottom intake is chocked by carpet), will cause more issues than fixing something that isn’t a problem.
After a few weeks of using my first built PC I’ve just realised that the way I’ve had to put my RMX shift 1000x PSU is different. I’m using the lian Li o11 vision case but the vision only has an option for a vertically placed PSU. This means the way my PSU is mounted is I have the fan facing the rear of the case (it’s a mesh back case so air can easily pass through) but my cables are facing up towards the top of the case. Is this okay? I mean I’ve had no issues with temperatures or anything I just had no idea this wasn’t how Corsair designed this PSU to be fitted
Thought my tuff gaming full atx modular case would let me do anything, well found unfortunately the psu area has no access from the right side its were the #4 and #5 ssd mounts are and has solid metal underneath only about 3/4 inch from the psu. So no room for the shift mounted fan down.
But for the price it seems like the best bet for an actual certified atx 3.0 with A rated fan noise, so ordered it. Guess I will just have to mount fan up and hope I can mount the cases psu shroud over it or be inventive to hide the cables with a glass cling or something.
This is all well good if u have a big case that's wide enough to fit the cables in. My case is only 200mm wide, so I got no chance of it fitting in my case and getting the cables in.
Case compatibility is going to be interesting..
Would have potential case comparability issues if the side panels don't offer much room. Though as with someone with a Corsair RX power supply...those cables be chunky.
I like the fact the connections are now sidemounted... What i hate are those cheap flat cables... Why they don't do premium cables like Be Quiet? I really love the sleeved cables of Be Quiet and i have a 850w from them...
Could you please do a video listing & comparing all available titanium rated ATX 3 PCIe gen 5 power supplies? Obviously with power so expensive it is in the public's interest to get a PSU which is the most efficient & so saves money on their energy bills. It would be great to include noise levels, cost, cable quality, size, etc comparison. I personally am especially interested in future proofing so looking for a 1500W or 1600W.
It would also be great if you could cover efficiencies of PSUs which are under lower percentage load, so for example, how otherwise identical PSUs with different W compare, like a 800W vs a 1600W running a system which uses close to that 800W limit, which is 100% for one bit only 50% for the other.
What will they think up next? Anything to empty your rear pocket. I would say components like RGB lighting for fans, memory, MB, strip lights, case lighting, AIO pump info screen, and GPU support brackets. Adding RGB lights and cable management is a hobby all in itself. Now, if MB manufacturers would place their connectors, especially those at the top of the MB, where I can get to them easily. One day the MB connectors will be made to swivel up or down. Wouldn't that be nice
I wonder if this will fit the Lian-Li Lancool 216?
I really wish they added a 1600 watt titanium version of this power supply
I installed the RM1200X a couple of days ago into a Corsair 5000X PC case. This smaller ribbon cables making cable routing so much easier. The 16 pin cable for the RTX 4090 which is included in the PSU box worked very well. Building a PC is now much easier. I highly recommend this PSU if you have a case that is compatible with it. If anyone has any questions that Leo did not answer just post a reply to this comment and I'll try to help.
I just ordered this product.
1- Does it matter where we plug the 2 cables going to the CPU?
2- my motherboard is not 8+8 pin. 8+4. I could not see a 4 pin cable in this product. How do I attach that 4-pin cable that I need to plug into the motherboard?
@@emrebozan5379 1) yes. Use correct slots for CPU
2) usually 8pin splits into 2. Try to see if splitting the 8 to 4 is possible
I think this will give some cases a problem and what happened to DO NOT bend the 12vHpwr cable at either end the graphics card and the PSU ?
The key point is to ensure the 12VHPWR cable is connected corrected. Bending and pulling the cable can cause problems so you need to avoid bending the cable excessively. In a sense, overly keen cable management is the root of the problem.
Leo
It only applies to 12VHPWR at both end. This one is 12VHPWR to 2x 8-pin, so you can bend it on PSU side.
@@nguyendinh2052 so it is not a true ATX 3.0 PSU then is it
My 12vhpwr cable from Corsair plugs into only 2 8pin pcie so why change ? Ok if you want the cables to come out of the side .
I'll stick the AX1600i thanks
@@Tainted-Soul ATX 3.0 Standard doesn't require 12VHPWR cable at all. It has to pass the new "power excursion" test, which prevents GPU Power spike shutting down PSU when there is no headroom. If you're using AX1600, you have ton of headroom already, there is no reason to switch to ATX 3.0 1200W.
@@nguyendinh2052 ok thanks , but just a side note that many people like myself will expect it to have said cable.
This would be great if it weren't hampered by a new corsair pinout and new connectors. I suppose if you are going to do it, you might as well do it when there is a standards change. It's also just worse in many ways from other solutions that solve the same issue. I make cables that I call, "little longies", as in "Get a dog little longie." What they are is slightly longer, individually sleeved shorty cables that put the connectors in the same orientation as this power supply. This also allows one to use simple extension cables to plug in from the "little longie" to the component. It makes it very easy to do PSU or cable swaps without increasing the width required for the PSU area of the case. This would not be a difficult idea for these companies to implement.
Wait that's an actual product? I thought the images were just Photoshop mockups. What problem is this supposed to solve? Who has more excess width than depth in their case, for this would make any sense over a regular PSU?
I think we can assume Corsair will bring out new cases that make a feature of the Shift power supply. Also, they may have other products in the pipeline....
Leo
Having to pull the power supply out the back of the computer every time you need to unplug or plug a cable into it. When you have managed all of the cables behind your computer, you can’t actually wiggle the power supply back out so you have to undo all of your cable management unplug all your power supply stuff so you can snake it out a little bit to plug in the additional power connector you need for that RGB strip you bought.
I think it is might be a useful option for people who have a case that will accommodate the new cable orientation.
However, it brings to mind a more useful change that IMHO all PSU makers should make.
They should mark the cables with the manufacturers name and the PSU model number to the cable. It can be critical for modular cables from different PSUs. I have several different makes and models of PSUs. If I wish to change my GPU cable or to add a few SATA cables and I haven't kept meticulous records of which cable belongs to which PSU I could potentially destroy my PC and its components.
Looks like a great power supply, as long as you don't use inverted cases...
My first issue with this is the cables.when your paying this price I expect better cables. While side connecting cables looks good there's a reason nobody does it and it's case width. Like in my case there's now way I could use this as the PSU practically touches the side of the case already so no room for wires and even if there was your gonna be tightly bending those wires. So this is very case dependant possibly locking you out of a lot of cases should you wish to upgrade. On top of that for me the prices are a joke because of this new way of plugging in the side. There's a reason most don't do this and this for me is why. More expensive and limited case options. It's too niche IMO..
I think the price is more to do with the change in connector type and the new ATX 3.0 standard then it is to do with the side the cables come out of
Better? I've always found ribbon style cables to be more space efficient and out of the way. They're also easier to route through tight spaces, they bend easily etc. If I knew how, I'd make all of my PSU cables myself and the exact length of ribbon cable I need.

Will this fit in a phanteks g360 case?
What about the MANY cases out there with minimal space between back panel and MB tray and now trying to jam those connectors and cables? I think a lot of back panels won't fit on properly with that power supply.
It's not like they're forcing you to only buy these new models lol. Doesn't hurt to give people more options.
@@darudesandstorm7002 The problem is when somebody buys a case and doesn't realise it won't fit. Hopefully Corsair has some details about minimum case width that is easy for people to spot.
Would it be fine with a 4000D?
I can't remember who, but Corsair copied that side connector design from another much smaller company, that has a tiny distribution. With that said, I have Corsair's regular 850x, and it has been stellar.. Note:, with the Lancool 216 case, you can easily get to both sides to play with the cables if needed.
Def agree - a good step in being different... Though I guess that other PSU makers will likely copy... :-(
Will this psu fit well with a 7000D airflow case ?
It seems like a safe bet that as a 5000D has plenty of space, a 7000D should have PLENTy of space
Rm1000x shift fit in 500dx or 4000d?
