I appreciate your vulnerability in speaking your truth and shining a light for those of us looking to make sense of what's happening. Thank you! Shine on sister!
She really missed the whole point of Lutheran faith. Those six generations should have been able to teach her from the start: faith by grace, not works.
White women don't have children and follow your natural urges as a mother instead work hard get a nice degree and work 60 hour work weeks and you can have a dog and a cat too what a great contribution to your race and Society
+SilverPaycho Sounds great. I'm on board. But can you propose a system in which that is actually viable? A system where everyone has real self determination/autonomy? My point is that if everyone behaved in the way that you propose then the system would collapse. For example, take public toilets. If shit isn't cleaned and disposed of then we will be living in and around our own faeces. U think anyone wants to clean up shit? No. But they do it and society benefits. If everyone doing a shitty job quit right now and became artists, speakers, performers, sports heros, CEOs, yoga instructors and 'spiritual psychologists' then society would seriously suffer.
***** No, in order to run a successful garbage disposal business you need desperate, dependent workers. They need to be desperate otherwise they would choose another more pleasant occupation. They need to be dependent otherwise they will be self-sufficient and have no need to work. In essence, vulnerable, human slaves (essentially living capital) working for minimum wage. Your fictional CEO who's passion was to have a monopoly business won't have employees if people are all off achieving their passions. Hence, the conclusion is that civilization necessitates a working class. She is acting like it doesn't. Also consider this, the way people are economically valued. It's all well and good to say 'I will not let myself be valued externally I will place my own value on myself', as she does in the talk. But then, if your economic value is none other than the physical labor that you can provide then you are in for a hard, cruel life. Refusing to externally value others will also not stop the system continuing to economically value people. It's just what happens in a commercial society. This talk is utter crap. It's unrealistic. The more spiritual gurus we have everywhere like her the more slave workers we will need to clean up her shit. Then she goes around proselytizing and claiming that 'you can be like me, love yourself, give up the mindless grind' - it's a FALSE PROMISE.
***** I don not wish to argue about whether it is possible to set up a garbage business. Of course it is. My point is that it requires people doing work that they don't want to do which runs counter to this woman's talk. It is but one example of a systemic problem. You said its not that bad because computers? What about cleaning shit from the seat and floor of a public toilet? Computerized? Cleaning shit off of a patient who's wearing adult dipers? Computerized? Working in an abattoir? I could go on and on. As for the value point. I was referring to people whose value is merely physical labor. Not the CEO - the CEO and people in upper management do not fall into this category. They are able to express their autonomy self determination due to their means.
***** You're still not addressing my main critique. That if people actually started achieving their dreams on mass it would be catastrophic for society. Sure, people go through transitory phases where they work shitty jobs temporarily as a necessity while they work towards what they want. Many leave the shitty job and do what they want. But many many more don't get out of it and stay stuck. If all of those people who are currently stuck acted on this ladies advice then goodbye society as we know it.
+SilverPaycho But a lot of people can't reach there. Only their children or grandchildren will, or sometimes not even that. These people stay doing jobs that most people don't want to do. Like legal and illegal immigrants, for example...and the lower classes of each country, as well as people who couldn't achieve any dreams because they had no talent, no intelligence or no luck. Each country is full of unfortunate people who are too busy trying to get by to worry about "dreams". All they can do is work and try not to get too frustrated, which they might be good at (picture Obama's single mom, who raised a president) or bad at (think any poor uneducated working class man who drinks booze and beats his noisy kids after work). Don't be blind...following dreams is something anyone can do. But achieving them is something only a few manage, especially when the dreams consist of being a wealthy and famous capitalist who inspires others. If anyone could do that, then celebs like David Bowie wouldn't seem so unique and special because lots of people would have that life.
She actually said to head in the directions of your vulnerability and pain, which takes much more courage than simply following a status quo. The whiny sounding part is just because it's an honest woman.
Why are you whining about it then? You didn’t have to watch her talk and then whine about how much you didn’t like it. I really enjoyed her talk and I like how she’s challenging society’s definition of self worth.
BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! Maybe if she didn't sound like she was almost about to cry the whole time I would have gave her self serving cry fest a longer listen!!

Amazing self awareness - inspiring to hear Bristol's personal journey.

I think she is talking about a common phenomenom that applies many of us. Very inspirational and honest talk, thank you!
This lady has some serious analytic skills, thanks for the talk

Powerful talk! Thank you for being so real, so funny, wise and courageous!
Beautifully spoken and deeply resonating.
spoke to me; oh god how this spoke to me! thank you.
my favorite Ted talk so far :)
Hard work reveals character, and it is through the revelation of character that worth is determined by ourselves and others.
So relatable and I totally agree with her
This made me cry 🙂🙂🙂
This is what I needed to hear today
great message...
Love this line: “A second puberty: where my mind rather than my shins were growing without my consent.”
great msg
This hit me. Thanks a lot
excellent talk thank you :)
I agree what’s the point of life if it’s just working
Last couple of minutes well done
well done
that was great
Not sure if this talk is too deep to understand or it's only me who is finding it difficult to fathom.
great
She really missed the whole point of Lutheran faith. Those six generations should have been able to teach her from the start: faith by grace, not works.
...Or.... you really missed the whole point of her talk...
Is that the best you can do, Bepka? No knowledge to add to the conversation?
I thought this was about Scientology
White women don't have children and follow your natural urges as a mother instead work hard get a nice degree and work 60 hour work weeks and you can have a dog and a cat too what a great contribution to your race and Society
these always end up being a bullshit excuse to brag about ones accomplishments
True. Some Tedx talks are useful but they're the exception and not the rule.
If everyone did what they loved then society would crumble. Wtf is she talking about.

God what's happened to TED? All this whiny emotional crap
Amen
This is "TEDx"... same format as TED but basically anyone can do it. TED may or may not be the same, I'm not sure.
