As someone who has spent countless hours, days, weeks, months, years obsessing over this topic I can tell you all that our purpose in life is to live it to the fullest. Don't spend so much time looking for a purpose, just enjoy the small things. Follow what you enjoy and what is meaningful to you but you don't need to think so deeply about it, if you don't overthink things you'll naturally be led to things that make you happy. Don't put your life on hold while searching. I also think many people who are very successful in life are unhappy because their lives lack balance. Balance is extremely important in life.
Great comment stay in the now without searching anything
Thank you jordan
I was wondering why this comment wasn't rated much higher, than realized its only 3 days old. I expect this climb fast.
@@MGLetItBe it's taken me a long time to figure this out. But yes I think for most people there will not be this big aha moment were they discover their life's purpose. I believe for most people it's much more subtle than that.
I often find myself reflecting on past memories. I always looked forward to the future when I would graduate and finally do something with my life that I thought I wanted to do, not what I had to do. Now I regret not appreciating the journey here. Life's short and my career isn't quite what I thought it was going to be, but I am trying to live in the moment more and I find it makes life that much more fulfilling.
@@jordanforbes2557 Like the saying goes "Life happens while you are busy making other plans". Notice how its always 5 or 6 years later, THEN was the good ole days.
OK let me begin by saying this video has a purpose and I'm going to explain it to you, but first I need to clarify some things. A few years ago I was a lazy teenager who spent his time; lying on the lounge, playing video games, either eating junk or not eating at all, I had a number of extremely embarrassing medical conditions and no social life outside the few friends I occasionally talked to in real life. If any of this sounds familiar then let me start of by telling you that there are thousands, even millions of people who are in the same situation, however not all of them are in the same mindset as you. Many people continue their lives sitting on their ass, doing nothing, not enjoying life and are using video games, movies books etc to either hide their insecurities or just escape from reality. Now don't get me wrong, you are clearly an intelligent person if you are looking at videos like this, there is clearly something inside you that wants to succeed or "Break free". Now for all of you who are complaining about the videos impact on you, your social anxiety or the lack of purpose isn't the reason it didn't work. The real reason is fear. Now this could mean you are afraid of a few things: Failure, People not liking you, Dying alone, Being unhappy, Not earning enough money and many others. However the thing is all these fears have been brought on by one person in the past (No not the same person for all of them), these thoughts all began as one person saying them as a fact and everyone else believing him (or her).
They are all universal fears promoted by society and social media and are forced upon us at a young age, we are practically conditioned to fail. Some people like you and me however have the ability to break free of this conditioning, you are probably wondering how I know this and I'll quickly explain how: By forcing yourself through this paragraph it shows you are determined to find a way out of your current life and find your purpose, something that most people don't have the mental strength to do. Anyway back to the wall of text. Let me tell you a story about my good friend, for confidentiality sake he will be referred to as L. Now L was in a similar state to me, no confidence, little to no friends, unhappy with his appearance, thought no one will ever date him, heck he only had his first kiss this year. Now his biggest issue was he wasn't confident in himself, he was afraid to show what he was passionate about because he didn't want people judging him for it. One day I was at his house when he asked me "Hey J, how do you talk to people you've never met before like that, how are you so confident?" and that's when it clicked in him, that's when he began asking questions, he wanted to find happiness, so I helped him find it, some peoples passion is music or art, his was helping others, so I asked him.
"What makes you happy?"
As I expected he replied with helping others, I then asked him:
"Where do you feel in control the most?"
He replied with the same answer. I proceeded to ask him a line of questions such as:
"Where are you most comfortable?"
and
"What is success to you?"
he replied with a similar answer each time. I told him to picture himself helping someone each time he approaches them he said it sounded hard and that he was afraid something bad might happen, I then told him to tell me his life purpose, he immediately was confused as you probably are after watching this video, I repeated the question once again, He responded with "I don't know, to be successful I guess?" I said so whats your life goal? He told me to be rich, i asked him why, he said because its what makes you happy. He didn't realize that he knew his purpose due to the fact that he was conditioned to be successful by everyone else standard, anyway he now has a beautiful girlfriend and is living in a small home living with his cat, to most this doesn't sound like much but to him, life is perfect, he is happy and free he was able to break free of this ,conditioning, Now, YOU need to be able to find what is holding you back, find the thing that is stopping you from finding happiness NOONE ELSE CAN DO THIS FOR YOU. Usually its the fear of being judged, The thing we fear being judged about the most is the thing that will make us the happiest. However to defeat this fear we must first find the thing we are most afraid of, being judged about the thing that will make us happy. And that is the purpose of this video: To find that thing. The thing that you are best at, the thing that will truly make you happy is the thing you are most afraid of publicly talking about, that one thing that you know you are great at deep down but are too afraid to follow it. The reason this video didn't work is because you already know your purpose, you know how to make yourself happy, you know your purpose, you just need to get out there and chase it and don't quit until you've caught it. If you made it this far you should pat yourself on the back, you persevered when most people wouldn't have even clicked "read more". You are one of the very few who are willing to do what it takes to be happy, to succeed. I wan't you to do a small task, it will take less time than it does to finish a standard netflix episode: Once every day I want you to either write down, or speak out loud the sentence: My name is _______ and my purpose is _________. After that if you wan't you can practice the skills required to achieve this purpose. Thank you for reading, good luck in all your future endeavors, I personally believe in you and you should too.
TLDR: If you skipped to the bottom for an easy way out, then you should either A. Read this paragraph or B. Miss out on information less than 2% of the population are willing to understand.
thank you so much, I really needed this :)

I think so many struggle with "finding their purpose" because they are under pressure to be financially successful in this pursuit. So often the things we enjoy and value immensely are not necessarily going to make us hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.
This comment deserves more likes.
This is exactly my problem

Yes I think that's true. One tends to feel that your purpose should be your source of income...ideally! I'm realising that it is not necessarily the case. Maybe it's the small things that matter, a word of encouragement, a smile. Simple things that can bring a ray of light into someone's life that make a difference, which you didn't even realise was significant, but may just have been what that person needed right then.
Unfortunately the cost of living is very high, especially in certain parts of the U.S and the cities

For a long time, my purpose was to make my parents proud, find a good job, be independent, have a house and my own family. But this was always another one's dream. My mom's dream. Now I have learned that I have to find my own purpose and I feel like even after watching this, I am still lost. I have to live my life for me and not for someone else, but I don't even know why I even live it
Somewhere there, when you circle in what you yourself enjoy doing when nobody looks and nobody pays you or praises you for it, what you are proud of achieving (something difficult enough), what gives you the results that you are pleased with, somewhere there are the answers that are your own answers, not your parents'. Look for meaning rather than for happy-go-lucky feelings. Meaning can become clearer when you think about those people that you yourself admire, what are their central values displayed in their actions? All the best wishes!
Living for your mom or anyone else will leave you feeling empty. Start journaling about what you want, who do you want to be, what excites you the most? Some things make your heart race, but when you come to something you're really passionate about, your heart slows and beats hard in your chest! You deserve to know yourself~ even if it's the first time you've searched yourself, you deserve it! ❤
@@starlingswallow Very true! Blessings!

In my humble opinion, the answer to "who do you do it for?" should be yourself. You do it because it makes you feel good about yourself and because it makes you vibrate. All the rest are positive side effects of you being true to yourself.
Yes, of course, but for example if you are a teacher, and you love teaching its question number 2, you already know and love what you teach so when you teach it for others it makes them learn and you can also do it for your family becsuse of the salary you get and of course for yourself. Its not only one answer, I think.
@Ivana Mielniczuk It's the same thing I'm saying. Basically, if we're able to sincerely answer to the first question "Who are you?", the other questions don't matter... If we have a good understanding of who we are and accept, love and respect ourselves no matter our flaws, we will do something we love. And if we do something we love, it is most likely gonna benefit others as well. The thing is, the first question is the hardest to answer for many of us... That's the first step. Then we actually have to love ourselves... Which can be a challenge in itself.
@@Gabcharp I guess I misunderstood at the begining what you meant because english isnt my mother tongue. But now I can say you are right and expressed it beautifully

Same here, Julie. I’m a teacher with exactly those thoughts. Does it happen to you though that you sometimes ask yourself when it’s your turn to fully relax and feel safe? It happens to me.
@@chrisg7795 Indeed, that loop reminds me of Stephen Covey's 7 principles/habits and amongst them the very important one of "Sharpen the Saw" - that is, you need to take of your own needs, too - or with Nel Nodding's term you need to take care that you "can stay one-caring". You need to look to it, that it also is your turn to relax, feel safe, refill your energy and capacity to provide for others. Otherwise the rightly dreaded "burn-out" can happen to you, and that is very serious and of no good for anyone. You are too valuable - try to stay one-caring also about yourself. Thank you for upholding the web of life, which is so important for all of us!

Well in Craig!
There's a book called Hidden Time Wealth, and it talks about how using some secret techniques, you can overcome procrastination and accomplish anything in life. It's not just a bunch of empty promises; it's the real deal.
Who's the author, please?
At 78, and a lifetime of rediscovering "purpose," meaning, I'll add that whatever you are loving being and doing, most wonderfully as conscious Practice, IS your Gift to the world, your "purpose," and there's a flow between 'you' and 'other', whether it's serving another human, a plant, a four legged. And your presence, for small or large moments of your life, is all you can offer, and enough.
What wonderful insight! That might be word for word what I told a friend last night.
Beautifully said❤
thank you.
When I started watching this video I knew nothing about my life purpose, when I was done watching the whole video I still knew nothing about my life purpose.
Update: 1 year later and I've decided there really is no purpose to life. It's incredibly interesting to speculate on how humans came to be as I feel knowing the answer to that question would also explain our purpose (or lack thereof) but until I find the answer to that question I will hold onto my opinion about life having no purpose.
I've also realized not having a purpose is not inherently depressing. In the same situation some people can be happy and some extremely sad. Which makes depression extremely scary because it shows that you do not need a tangible reason to be depressed and if something has no cause it has no clear solution either.
I have found a good way to move on with life in the meantime. Have a fun activity that you can do daily, for example playing csgo or whatever you genuinely enjoy doing (with friends if possible). On top of that have one super fun and hard to achieve goal for example starting a tech company. This will keep you occupied from the everlasting string of questions and you will probably lead an interesting life, the scale of which depends entirely on you. Also stop caring about what anyone thinks of you, it will give your life a huge happiness boost instantaneously.

Life comes down to two things:
1. Find your purpose and take action on it.
2. Find someone who actually cares that you found your purpose and never let them go.
If you do those two things, you win at the game of Life.
What if I found the purpose of life and could not achieve it? What if I can't find someone who cares about my purpose in life?

I am Maddie, I am a bartender, I make drinks for customers, they want to be inebriated and they change into aggressive, disorientated, assholes. Thanks for clarifying my life purpose. I feel just great.
well it kinda referred to what you really love to do, or what you feel like you are so good at that you can actually teach it to someone. I am not sure if you really love bartending , but if you do there has to be another type of reason like to help people taste a lovely alcohol mix if it is about cocktails (not likely, but still) or you just want to help them forget their problems in drowning themselves in alcohol (which is not your problem). I don't know, I think it is all about perspective ... try another working place or figure out if this is what you really, really deep down want to do and ask yourself why.
Anyway, I could not find the so called "life purpose" based on these 5 questions 'cause I am still stuck at question no. 2, I am not sure I can teach anyone anything really, and I have no idea what do I really love doing because I love so many things and I cannot really pick one because I feel like there must be something else out there , more interesting to love than whatever I currently like doing because what I like feels lame. :))
Bianca L. if your life purpose is your passion/something you really love then who cares what other people think if it's good enough? don't criticize yourself. if it makes you happy and if someone gets something out of it, then that's good enough. sorry I'm bad at expressing my thoughts.
some comments are more meaningful than the talk itself :)
:-)
No matter what you do, if you do not value it. It is worthless.Value your time and every thing that you choose to do. No one, absolutely no one, can force you to do something your don't want to. Take responsibility for your choices. If you have decided to make yourself a "victim" you will feel like one. Victory come from years of dedication and repetition. Dedication for excellence and repetition for perfection. If you do the same thing every time, then do it with more perfection, take a constant feedback for every guest if they like it that way it is made, is there some you could add or subtract to make it taste even more fabulous. Bartender should be proud, Jesus turned water into wine that was his first miracle at the wedding feast at cana.
My life long purpose is to provide for my family. For a lot of us it really is that simple. If you can get food on the table and a warm home you have made it.
Thank you for this
I think we are so lucky to of been born and experience this world, there is no "purpose" to "search" for. Live your life, spread positivity and just focus on making yourself and others happy.
knowing you have come into the world and made someone's life better, or you made a animal's life better by just a tiny bit means your life was purposeful.
i'm a loner, introvert, don't have any friends , most would think im a waste of space but i make my dog's life great and thats how i know im not useless or pointless because i have made someone's life so much better than if i wasnt born.
That’s awesome
Purpose is what you do daily each day in that day.
Yeah, improve yourself and the world (be a man of value, as Einstein said). But don't forget self-discovery and spirituality. Materialism alone does not feed the soul, only gives a temporary ego boost.
You're awesome ☺️
@Dante my dog is doing great and just to change the way i see myself i will re-write the last bit i wrote. "i am a introvert, i do have friends and nobody thinks im a waste of space." inner thoughts can make you feel worthless but it is never the case. Just got to be weary of my internal thoughts and the ongoing struggle to quiet them/change the way i speak to myself in a more positive light.
You can only really answer these questions if you already know what you want to do. I couldn't answer past question number 1 because I don't know what I want to do. Kind of why I wanted to watch this video.

+ Crystal Martin: It can take some courage to act on ideas. Perhaps you will decide to play some thought experiments, or, create some future-diary type stories. I do stuff like this: I google anything that I have some interest in. For example, today I was thinking about a pal in London who wants to move to Malaga, Spain. I was thinking, "I know nothing about Malaga"... actually, I needed to look it up on a map to see where in Spain it is. So, I did THAT. Then, I searched for "Flats for sale in Malaga" (condos for sale) because he wants to buy a place there. I spent some time looking at places for sale in malaga... and then I realized that doing that was a bit useless as I know nothing about 'the where factor' in Malaga. Also, my pal has so little money that none of this makes sense. He does not have enough to buy what looks good.... and, "is what looks good really any good?" So, then I thought, "If I go there, WHERE would I want to be?" and then I decided to look at pictures (Google images) and aerial photos from Google. I thought, "Damn, this place is dry and I'm going to need fresh water to drink!" And so I googled 'fresh water in malaga' and got all sorts of info about AQUIFERS.... ie., fresh water that is underground. I researched all THAT for thirty minutes and learned as much as I could about aquifers in coastal regions.... Whoa...."Coastal aquifers are in danger from sea level change".
I find THIS highly interesting so I read more and I relate it all to where I currently live, near Boston, and ask: "Where can I find plentiful reserves of (underground) fresh water that is near to the ocean?". I know that I want to live up over the ocean on a rock ledge, ideally 100 feet up above the mean sea level, AND, I will need fresh water to drink, I'll need to water my garden". I do the research required to learn about WHERE this is in my area because THIS, if I can find it, will be and area where I will want to buy land in order to end up building a house that will for the next one-hundred years, sustain me and the family I want to have. So, I find the land I want to buy and now I have a goal set up. Yep!! "I want to buy this land and nothing will stop me". Now I am willing to anything to get the money to get the land I need to build the compound for the wonderful future I will have with this wonderful family in my head. Now I have a purposeful thing that I want to accomplish. I keep pushing and doors that I never even considered suddenly appear and some open as I learn to lean against them hard enough. I am so desiring this home above the sea with fresh food, my girl (aka wife) my babies, everything.... life starts open up for me and I start to get it all. Easy peasy. In no way did I expect this to happen! Nevertheless, I am not at all surprised that it all appeared out of thin air.
Don't look for a job until you do this sort of an exercise. And then once you find this THING that interests you highly, go into all that you can on the subject. From there you will see that there are many jobs that will work to serve YOU as a way of learning more as you progress toward getting this THING that you want so badly. Do NOT look for a job opening' instead look for the best job for your training. Know WHY you want to be in this one company. Pretend that you have millions of dollars and you want to BUY a company. Why one over the other? Learn all you can and call them to set up an appointment to meet with them. You are shopping for the BEST FIT. You are NOT 'trying to get a job'. It's about research and attitude. Take ownership.
wow, that was really sweet of you to type all of this out
Well, one way to do is to actually have a mission statement rather than a specific purpose. Say... my mission statement is to have the most fun life I can. So, I've lived a life that allows me to have the most fun I can.
Something like that.
Now, for me, having the most fun possible is PART of mine. Most of the jobs I've had were actually fun because that's what I wanted. I didn't care about the pay as much because of it and that was fine. I always managed to make enough money not to worry about the rent or other stuff like that. It's more fulfilling that way.
Now, I don't always live by that mission statement. It's impossible to have fun 100% of the time. People I've loved have died, for example. Hard to have fun with that. But that's a part of life.
Crystal Martin I had the same thing... I don’t know what I really love to do. Well, bingewatching Netflix, but that’s not really a talent ;)

So glad I watched this video because if I hadn't, I might have been lost for a long long time. Something just clicked for me when he mentioned it's more about other people and not yourself. For the first time in a long time, I have this calming feeling inside of me instead of constantly being anxious about why I'm in this world. Such a life changing TED talk, thank you very much Adam!
That element of doing good for others is fine, but the claim that this is more about other people than you is false. I believe in enlightened self-interest and that doing good for others rewards ME with the pleasure of that fulfilling experience. There's no real division between doing good for others and doing good for yourself, since selfish actions are inherently defeating over time.
Video was complete waste of time for me
literally same. that moment where you’re like - so that’s why i’m so unhappy. i’m too self centred. ofc i can’t see my purpose. it’s not about me
Note: You don't have to spend the rest of your life doing the one thing that you have knowledge in at this moment in time, you can explore other things and discover other future talents, the more you educate yourself the more opportunities you will want to take. Bathe yourself in information and don't stick with just one thing because someone told you that it's all you'll ever be good at and has to be your life purpose. Sure that one thing can lead to growth and talent, but do it because you actually want to do it.
You only get one life my friends, try a bit of everything, knock on many doors until you find something you love and find fascinating or worth pushing yourself for, working hard for and reap the benefits.

I once read a book that helped me with this question. It stated, the first half of your life you make money from what you educate yourself in, invest, and save your earnings. The second half of your life you follow the passion you have inside to help others with the skills that come easy to you. It may strictly be charity work or making far less than what you once were use to earning. Because it's no longer about you, if you have successfully secured your future, but the joy found in helping others. It helped to know what you start out doing does not have to be forever. Life's experiences changes us and we can do something totally different.

After reading almost half of the comments and finish watching this video I've come up with this fact that life is the way you pursue your enjoyable activities it's the pathway of doing what makes you invigorated and what grows such a huge entertainment inside you , just forget about this purpose thing and follow what you're passionate about what you feel flat out energetic and ready to do for no price whatsoever this thing will usher you automatically to your genuine passion .
How do you find your passion 😭
It’s really important to know that you don’t have to ‘become’ anything. This obsession with purpose is silly. Just being here is enough. Being a good person is enough. You are enough. Billions of people can’t read of write and they are here for a reason. Being is enough.
JAKE FUKK Thanks Jake. You cheered me up. Always in the Emerg. This is discouraging. Looking for a part-time job.
JAKE FUKK very well said. I'm sick of videos/people talking about what they are and want to be. videos with piano over lays. Joe Rogan preaching his bull. you're right. being is enough.
Amen! Well said Jake!
Our worth is not determined by our Productivity. We are INHERENTLY WORTHY.
I was watching this video because I have way too many passions. Lol. I never know where to focus...but do I really NEED to focus?? Idk...🤔
Whoa!! That legit sounds like the lyrics from the BTS song called Paradise. They say the exact same thing. The fact that you breathing is enough; stop running for nothing (chasing dreams that were imposed on you by society)
Yeah sure, if you're happy with that then great! But if you're not, it can destroy you from the inside...
I was not confused about my life purpose. But what I discovered by defining every day what made me happy that day and what gave me joy that day without costing ANY money, I discovered the kinds of activities and experiences I needed to increase in my life. Increasing those kinds of activities and experiences has made a big difference.

Even though I technically do not do anything yet, this video opened my mind in realizing that I have to find something I love to do but also benefits and helps others. Simple and inspiring -loved it!
good luck finding that
Chef. Am I right?
Citlali I'm ten years older than you. I only now understand happiness. and purpose. When i was 19 I dropped out of college feeling disenfranchised, I joined the military. Never did i think i would do that in a million years. Now I live in LA and I make music and work on movies. Most lives go totally way out of the way of what you wanted or expected. The truth is...brace yourself...people in the west WANT TOO MUCH. We are taught and indoctrinated to be unhappy with everything that's not perfect. Nothing...not the job you thought you wanted or the partner you thought you'd have...will make you happy or feel complete. we are always changing and things are always changing around us.The trick is to learn to enjoy the journey and ride the waves. There's an attitude we can take in life and it may take some time to understand but it's either anxiety or adventure. if we see the ups and downs as a part of our life and learn to see it as an adventure, life is so much more enjoyable. I have a lot if friends who went through identity crises and worries about work and relationships. the ones who learned to see what was around them and always make the best of it found themselves more satisfied. People often are not happy because they don't want life to be as challenging as it truly is. Focus on being around good and genuine people, see life as an adventure, and you as the hero. At nineteen you're just starting out. there will be so many changes and revisions. Just don't let that process get to you. You'll do fine. :) Hope I helped.
Write about it over here, this is where other intelligent people go; niume.com/53402
Thank you for your comment, I appreciate your feedback on your outlook on purpose. I definitely agree on just living life as a journey and making the best out of it... I know I am young and things will fall in place on their own. I know my identity will play out as I live. Good luck on your own adventure :)
Excellent. My Professor in my MBA Program assigned me to listen to your talk. This brought me to tears because I have not been able to figure out my life's purpose til now. passion is for you and your purpose is for others. Your passion makes you happy, but when you use your passion to make difference in someone else's life, that's a service and that's your purpose.
Didn't you just hate those kids at school when you were 12 years old & they just knew exactly what they wanted to do with their lives, & they did just that when they left! I'm 50 this year & I still haven't managed to understand & realize what it is I really want to do! Must be great working & being paid good money doing what you love!
Same, exactly the same here.
you nailed it in your last sentence. what ever you love, find some type of work within that field. you like horses? go to the track and walk them. groom them, anything having to do with horses. simple. and yeah, if you work doing what you love, you aren't working at all!

If all the professions received equal pay. Which one would you choose? If you suddenly had 30 Billion Dollars and you were still forced to work/have a profession (because of a new law) and you had all the connections in the world which 3 would you choose?

I answered these questions and ended up in tears because it was so true, and because I am happy with what I've done with my life. I make other people happier through helping them heal through Taoist medicine and helping them become happier by explaining the Taoist philosophy of our relationship to the universe we live in. Tears of happiness! What an unexpected start to my day from listening to this great short video. BRILLIANT, Adam Leipzig. Thank you, TEDx Malibu!!
I clicked on this video thinking, "I'm not going to learn a damn thing."
And I was right.
Yeah, when I saw the 19M views, I should have known better. I answered the questions, but I already know my why and how it fits into the world. Most of the complainers on her don't know, and this speech doesn't change that. He's right that knowing the answers to those questions can be powerful...why is why so many people feel powerless.....
That's why......

lmao
I'm not negative, in fact I'm exceptionally positive, I just happen to be quite selfish and not passionate about anything, so yeah this video doesn't help if you don't know what you want and you don't care about others, in any case I'm just chilling anyway.
I agree Angie. Fine, he had 5 suggestions to help you decide what you want to do to fulfil your life's purpose but then he went on to ask the audience their answers, assuming they were all doing what they were supposed to be doing in life. It sounded like only a handful of people were answering him so maybe they were the only ones who were doing what they wanted to. The others, like myself, hadn't a clue and are none the wiser after it. I'm disappointed.
I’m still stuck on the second question... I don’t feel like I’m “supremely” qualified to teach anyone anything! Because I don’t know that much about any one particular thing
Hi. Maybe keep tryng fringe new stuff, see where it takes you😁
Hey, now you know that, you can actively look through things you would enjoy teaching others and then go down that path and see if you figure out your life goal
Is there something you are passionate about? Something you could talk about all day regardless how much you know about it?
Me too haha
You know how to read and write, maybe you can teach others,,,if you still not happy doing so maybe that time you spent helping others can make them really happy,,, i think it's difficult not to feel great doing those kind of things, not only charity,,,Cook something to a friend, ask him what he would like for dinner, for example

Wow, it's a beautiful purpose. You're talking about storytelling! One of the most useful thing umanity ever invented!
I enjoyed your comment, I'm on the same path 👍
Your comment is 8 years old, I hope you made it in life! :)
This comment is for ALL people. The purpose of life is to be happy. We aren't supposed to be told what to do, who decided what is beauty and what is not beauty, who decided that this is fashionable and this is out of fashion. Who decided that what you are doing right now is wrong or right? Who decided what religion is better than the other? You are NOT a sheep!! You are a human being with a right to happiness, you are an amazing individual who can give the world what it needs. Doing what you love doing is something that many people take for granted, we always follow rules and we always do what our parents wants us to do, because money is more important than your happiness. I am going to start doing what I love and I am going to change my life and help people as much as I can, and when the day comes when I die, people will remember me not for my riches, but how I enriched people's lives. Find out who you are guys, find out what makes you happy, because people just are so much better when they are happy. Do research on what makes people happy and you will be shocked to see that it is actually not about you, but it involves other people rather than yourself. Be who you are, as long as it makes you happy and it makes people happy.
Have an awesome week guys
Wow, you comment truly changed my life, for it motivated me to find what enlightens myself. Thank you.
thank you for your positive comment. i enjoyed reading it and agree with that we must do what makes us happy. but what if we dont know? what if we are too busy to stop and enjoy life? no im not a sheep! i refuse to be. but the system is built so that we're always kept busy and never have spare time to sit and think and be creative. im busy with a full time job and busy with school. when do you suppose we'll be able to work on any projects if we're always being pulled in so many directions? :( im so stressed out because id like to have a job that doesnt feel like a job, but im stuck. why? cuz i gotta stay here in order to continue my school since this job is flexible with working with my school hrs. and im going to school so i can have a more comfortable life later and for the security of having a degree. its not easy to find our purpose when we're so distracted from ourselves, when we're deprevided of life and enjoying a beautiful day outside because we're stuck in a 7 by 7 cubicle.
+Lucia Preciado Thank you for replying with a detailed description of your situation. I totally get what you're saying. I would suggest start with the time you have, even if it is just 5 minutes to write down the things you love, it could be literally anything. Then focus on those things and sort them from most favourable to least and there you should begin to find yourself and what you love. Maybe the direction you are going to is the right decision. Focus on people who inspire you and ask yourself why they inspire you. Then focus on finding people with the same motivations as you and see what they are doing. You could practise at school, and when you get the job you can then learn all the tricks to the trade and open up your own business where you make the rules. Keep in mind that you want to make your employees happy as well, so that you benefit yourself and others :) There are many ways to do things, and we always have some time to think and from the looks of it you have no problem when it comes to using your brain. Being passionate about something will make you comfortable I can guarrantee it. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you too.
Have a great week

11 years since and still I gravitate to this video. Thank you for the clarity Adam!
There has been an interesting experience I have had which I´d like to share. For a while now I have been looking for my purpose, trying to find out that thing which it is I came here to do. I was thinking about it a lot. I sat in silence and quieted my mind. I connected deeper to my heart. I asked myself what are the 5 top things I want to focus on and master. I wrote them down. I have minimalized my life, I mean EVERYTHING! From the files on my phone, to my physical environment, to my computer to the "files" in my mind. EVERYTHING! And the results are amazing. I wake up and now exactly what my goals are. No more trying to think about them and doing it later or trying to figure it out. I realized that it is about setting and achieving goals meaningful to me and my purpose will reveal itself through action, not through thinking. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this!
Makes sense ❤️
Sounds accurate
I'm glad it worked for you
I’ve seen before that if you want change and you don’t know what to do to start with, move a simple thing in your life such as q chair’s placement in your house. This changes the energy around and change comes. I guess that’s the same principle you used.
Loved this talk! I have been fortunate to have a career that gives purpose to me and others, have a husband, daughter and friends to share life with. The one story that never seems to grow old is Scrooge. There are many blessings to be recognized in service and love for others.
Thanks for this talk!
It's disheartening to read the comment section of this video, I was expecting positive feedback, but all I read was stories of depression and negativity. My name is Martin, I help people get through depression, I do it for my friends and family, because they need hope and help, and then they become less depressed, and more happy.
My life purpose is to spread positivity and joy towards people and friends. If you're still struggling to find your passion, work hard to find it. You don't get what you wish for, you get what you work for! Work hard at find it!
Great message Martin. I'd really like to email you I'm undergoing depression 😭
Martin You are of the few that hot this message because You are not selfish, You are lucky that You have found out the purpose of your life. You vive more than what You receive. Congratulations for being so possitive. This world needs more consciouss people like you
@Abraham Serafino I think part of Adam's message was that we overthink things so much that sometimes a quick response to a big question can be the best answer. Your gut reply can be more truthful and honest than trying to be clever or impress others. Also your life's purpose can be many things of your choosing and can change as you change. You have to admit when he said you will know your life's purpose in 5 minutes, your attention was riveted to this guy. I remember a great line in the movie "City Slickers" where Curly says the secret to life is just 1 thing while pointing his finger. Billy Crystal's character asks "what, what is it?" Curly(Jack Palance) says, "thats for you to find out". Only you know what it is, no one else can tell you. ( :
But isn't there a trick to this? If your life purpose is to make depressed people happy, in a world where all depressed people are already happy, you become depressed yourself, having no way of executing your life purpose?
Therefore you need depressed people to be depressed, otherwise you'll be depressed yourself
I feel like he completely ignored the fact that half the audience didn't have an answer to question 2. Instead of taking the time to help them find it, he barrelled on with his script and lost every one.
Exactly the reason I stopped watching at question 2
I get where he's going.... however... honestly... I'm only after short story.... not the whole book.

I'm stuck at the third question. Who do you do it for?.
@@dharsinparamenthiram2893 it's ok to do it for yourself
@@sheliarossell3162 I had the same question, but think he clarified that it's the people that are the beneficiary of what you do. For example, you love to paint mountain scenes. Sure you do it for yourself as you enjoy it, but as an artist you would be doing / sharing it with people who enjoy mountain scene paintings. Especially if you were to custom paint. At least this is how I interpret it, almost like who is the customer or who am I servicing with what I do.
@@dharsinparamenthiram2893 sometimes what you do for yourself indirectly impacts someone else. I created a brooch for an event that requested all of us ( woman veterans) wear our service branch pins to show which branch we'd served in. I wanted a nice brooch for my dress, so I created one that incorporated my branch. Four years later, I've sold 22 in one month, and have standing orders for 20+ more. I did it for me, but inspired other women veterans who saw it, to represent their service careers in a more fancy style of dress.

Great talk. Few years ago I didn’t get it. Now I rewatch and realize how profound it is. To answer these questions it takes long process of work, experience and self-reflection
Thank You For This Video, I learn a lot.

He's an asshole. Peddling easy and nonsensical answers to gullible people.
kev3d all criticism is self criticism and projection. I wish for you peace, love and harmony.
Julius Fawcett What kind of horrible reasoning is that? Naturally, it is wrong. Some criticism is completely valid and even necessary. But saying all criticism is projection or self criticism is monumentally stupid. A critic of abuse is not necessarily an abuser. Only cowards and the morally bankrupt do not criticize. Behind the false veneer of "peace, love and harmony" is actually a core of glaze-eyed acceptance of horrible philosophy and complacence while simultaneously trying to silence opposing voices.
Agreed, blanket statements are never true. There will always be exceptions.
kev3d haters gonna hate, lovers gonna love, where do you fit in?
There is something everyone needs to understand. This man can't possibly tell you what your purpose is in a video. He paints a picture of the direction you should move towards once you think you have an idea. If you don't see how he is trying to help then you'll be part of the 80%. life itself is so challenging so its difficult to even think of a "purpose" or take this seriously because there is so much more to it then that. But he is a smart guy and i think he made very very good points.

You just saved me 10 minutes thank you
I always knew my life purpose, so my answer may help someone:
1 - I am an educator (I took this question as a "What you are" because who doesn't say much about anyone)
2 - I enhance people's performances on nearly anything (Mostly professions)
3 - Autodidacts, desperate people, competitors/ anyone who wants to be among the best at something
4 - They want to improve their current skills
5 - Some became arguably the best, some became better than the average joe. All of them became better than when they started
But hey, these people took at least 1,5 to 5 years to find their "purpose" which is no more than their will.
TLDR for gamers: Life is like Minecraft. You don't have a purpose in life besides survive so, have fun while you do it.
"The most successful people in any field always focus more on the people they serve than how they are served themselves." Brilliant.
I'm 35 years old and barely scratching the surface on pursuing what makes me feel like myself, but this truly resonated with me. I usually care more about others than I do myself. I think my purpose is to build up others so we can grow together.
Thank you lord! For this video and everyone here; I’ve been struggling lately and I believe I’ve found it. I know for sure what I can do and give to people.
1. Who are you? I am a Humanoid Organism.
2. What do I do? What do you LOVE to do? (Two totally different questions). I go to work. I LOVE to wander around stoned taking pictures. Narrowing that down to what I feel supremely qualified to teach other people? I am not supremely qualified to teach other people anything.
3. Who do I do it for? It depends on which of the above questions I am answering. Anyway, the audience just mumbled. People don't necessarily do what they do for anyone in particular. Often they do what they do just to survive.
4. What do they want or need? Who?
5. How do they change or transform as a result? Who? If I work in a crematorium incinerating animals they turn into ashes.
Why was that formulation so powerful? It wasn't. It was meaningless psychobabble.
I looked this guy up. Reading between the lines I think he was in the right place at the right time, knew the right people, had good social skills and got lucky. I don't think he lives in the real world and I think this vid was a waste of time.
Thanks for putting my confusion during these powerful questions into words.
My pleasure. ;-)
You nailed it. Now I don't feel so bad for not being able to answer his stupid questions.
+HumanoidOrganism A Humanoid Organism would be what you are not who you are. if you were referring to your YT name then you should have said, "I am HumanoidOrganism."
One might introduce one's self by name or by another defining characteristic. For example, if a person said to me "who are you" in a work context I might say "I'm an undercover police officer" (although that is not my occupation!). I think in the context of this Ted Talk the speaker was not asking the audience to interrogate themselves as to what their name was, but who they were in terms of their nature as a person. My YT name is HumanoidOrganism but I am also a biological organism of the humanoid variety. If you want to get pedantic let me know and I will point out the grammatical errors in your post.
This only tells people their purpose is about something they can give to others. My answers were that I am Rozanne, I love making stuff, whether it's clothes or paintings. I do that for me and it makes me happy. It would be nice if I can make someone else happy too, but it's really for me. I think people's purpose is to be happy and to love and do whatever makes them feel that way.
yeah, no mantra is ever going to work for everybody, because everybody is different. Some people dont helping others, some people think its fun to kill others, while you can argue you can still help for example by becoming a marine. Still, it aint all that black and white. The most important thing is to try and be happy, religious aspects and society standards aside.
I like this guy he is straight to the point ..none of this, draw a circle/ map …do this exercise fur 30 days , say this affirmation etc…blah blah blah ….he is direct and simple
Me: Plays the video at 2x the speed so it is actually 5 minutes...
you're welcome...
I forgot about that feature...Cool...Thanks
Thank you!
Perfect.
And then when you put it in normal speed to watch how the video looks like...
You will not regret for what you have done... it's a complete lost of time, or too much time for something simple and bad prepared
Modern problems require modern solutions
The reason why most people are still lost is because you are not trying. You are looking for someone else like this guy to give you the answer to your life. You need to find your own answers. Try things, figure out what you like doing and if it's not something that fits into any "career path" Make your own career out of it. You will never find the purpose for your life by sitting on the couch and eating Cheetos.
it's like the PRESTIGE movie opening dialogue
It is true
Nefertiti Negus thanks! i just got off the couch and put my cheetos on the garbage can, what now?
boring
thanks, you're right. good reminder.
My interpretation:
Your life purpose is constructed on your contribution to the world. You do not neccesarily have one at the moment, for example, if you're still a high school student. It also may or may not be what you want, especially when your contribution is not significant. So then you want to do something different. How?
If you just say "I enjoy drawing", it means nothing. This thought doesn't help you picture your future. In the end, do you want to give children awesome dreams? Do you want to make people rethink on life and reach their "Eureka" moment? This is what you truly are. Your career as an "illustrator" is just a way to achieve this, rather than itself being the main focus.
That's also why you may hesitate to draw for advertising companies, because then you are expressing other people's ideas rather than your own.
Your comment actually really helped me! Thanks!!
True. I am an artist and designer and loath the idea of working for a company. Giving them my ideas so they can make money. Forget that. But you make a good point; this exercise isn't about what one likes to do, this is about how what makes one happy can be meaningful. I think most of us want to feel meaningful to others, which in turn gives our lives meaning. Get my meaning?
This is very moving, the things that make you up are not you, you are unique compared to others, you are that 1are that slim chance of the millions of egg cells in moms womb. The very fiber of your very existence is what you are. The only thing that makes you complete, is you. Its not your compassion that makes you want to do what you want to do. Its you. The only one thing that is true to you, is you. God and Jesus don't forcefully make you do certain things. Its you. Your vey heart and soul is what ignites you to do your very best. Emotions are a big part of this factor. But focus on happiness, joy, and all above that. Its ok to get mad, sad, or angry it just helps us get a better concept of what we do, who we are, and what we are. You are your own truth. Making mistakes never hurts anyone, we learn from those mistakes. If you say I love this, I love tthat , don't listen to yourself. God, Jesus, and the angels are here to help us guide ourselves through life until are time is up. But God is still within us. He believes in all of us. So, if someone says "God hates, Jesus hates you, you are a part of the Devil", don't listen to them. There is only one thing we can fully understand in this universe or possibly multiverse, and that is ourselves. Thank you for reading this.
Purpose is found in service and generosity, not self-centeredness. Thank you.
Life doesn't have a purpose. It's a journey to explore
I agree. One question and answer just leads to another question.
then your purpose, is to explore the journey. good on ya. (serious.)
See...you found your life's purpose.
Wrong! Listen to the purpose of life ( Jeffery Lang)
Where do i start tho
I can be a professional procrastinator
so cool
+kaajal matai I was thinking of doing that but I can't decide if I should.
just do it
+kaajal matai The competition is quite tight, its not as easy as they say

Video title: How to know your life’s purpose Video content: How to explain what you already do in a profound way.
I like how he brings up the most complex and intriguing question anyone can ask themselves right off the bat, and then disregards it as quickly. I still can't fully answer that
But people who can answer those questions this quickly already know what their life's purpose is. It's the ones who have a harder time who need advice on finding their life's purpose.
Exactly. I can't answer them.
I will tell you!! only you and God knows your purpose. JUST keep on talking to Him. And keep His word cause it's powerful 😊❤️
God will bless you 🤩🤩🤩
Mainly the question
"what do you feel supremely qualified to teach people"
Oh so surprised how ppl react to this speech in the comment, he did help me see my dream clearer and put it fully into one sentence. Great Talk!
1. Matt
2. Plant seeds
3. Everyone
4. Sustainable Food
5. Health
Looks like you have a great opportunity there Matt.... I like your thoughts...
I'm guessing you're familiar with permaculture? :)
Yes, still got a lifetime of learning ahead. Your comment inspired me to break down the walls & build connections. Thank you :)
Please keep sharing with each person how they made a difference! I can only speak for myself, but your response does inspire me to keep commenting. :)
How's it going Matt? Do you need any help with that?
Wow I’m sat in the bath right now trying to decipher my purpose, and this talk has just shown me the way. It just gave me clarity and now I’m going to seize my purpose and focus my drive and discipline and passion and turn it into my obsession, world get ready for my arrival. 😊
Speaker: What are you supremely qualified to do???
Audience: ....mfffbeellahfjskhhh
Justin Jaeger - I answered, play video games?
😂😂😂
Haha
lol i think this is more about what you naturally do well (it could be what you do better than other people you know. For example, plan and organize or meet new people/speak in public etc. Cuz obviously, especially for those of us in their 20s, it's hard to already be supremely good at something).
haha
I would say the better question is
‘what do you always do in your free time that you have an intrinsic motivation to do? The thing that you’re always interested in, that you always go back to. The thing that makes you happy and gives you a sense of calm. The thing to do when there’s no one around to pay attention to and no obligations.
video game 😭
Great answer
The problem with this upbeat peppyness is the Asumption everyone has this thing you speak of. When the answer comes back nothing. What's left. My spare time is filled with how bored and fed up I am.. that's what I keep coming back to..
Creating comics in my diary, watching anime, eating snacks and lazing around.
My purpose is what I do daily. Yet my gift is wisdom with clarity with life at it's best with answers. This can be used in any area. Seeing the answer. For daily life, job, company, people, and any area. Even brings great change just being in any area.
You get a job so you can afford to have a life. But then, you spend all your time at work and end up with no time to live the life you are working for. sounds familiar ?
cengiztube Yup. Can't live without money, have to sell your life to get money. It's a genius system invented to deal with the abolition of slavery... just make it impossible for anyone to *not* be a slave.
Kragatar you think our money was invented after slavery or something?
Daniel Harris yeah right we are paid slaves and we do not anything to change it, i dream a world without fucking money, i dream a world where all of us we will have the chance to live our lives not to exist in it, dream of a world without money, where we could get food, clothes and other stuff without paying for it, go to your job and not get paid , go on vocation and do not pay, just everything to be free, i think it would be much better, no thieves,no fucking cops, no poor on the streets begging for a fucking cent, but we are so afraid not afraid of them but mostly we are afraid of ourselves.
we are born innocent naked babies and we die wild wounded animals
love and peace

really? i dont think so . considering he's dead
The way Hidden Time Wealth dives into the concept of productivity is mind-blowing. Hidden Time Wealth tips are pure gold, and I wish more people knew about them.
A 10 minute video on how to find your purpose in 5 minutes....seems shady.
I guess i'll find my purpose first, the doublecheck on it on the second 5 minutes.
Hahaha
I guess he expects you to watch it at twice the speed
it's actually way better if you do
It doesnt mean the video has 5 minutes. But how to find purpose in 5 minutes...
I'm stuck at number 2. I don't have anything "supremely qualified to teach" T_T
I think you must be really funny and sweet, I sense it!
same
Or maybe you play video games and become a pro gamer. Some people say that playing games destroys your future but there are actually wrong. Playing games might be your passion so hold on your passion and bring to the full extent of your dream. So dont crush your own dream by hearing others words.
Then find something you are passionate about, learn it, then teach it?
@@mikemerlin4020 That's right. I do that on RUclips. :)
Let me give this another try:
1. recall those times when you did something that didn't seem all that much trouble to you, in fact you loved doing it, and other people thought it was really special and you made them happy. If you have such a thing, God bless you: do it more!
2. think about the possibility of doing this and making a living out of it; this is the hard part, because once people have to pay for something, it's a little harder to keep them very happy; also, while in theory people should be willing to pay for things that make them truly happy, often they waste money on stuff because everybody does so and wait for the stuff that really matters to them to happen for a bargain
3. this often leads you to combine the thing you love to do with being an entrepeneur, which is something not everybody likes to do; the time spent on entrepeneurship and marketing may go at the expense of what you really want to do
4. so, think about the possibility to get your money in a more mundane way, doing a regular job, freeing up maximum time to do what you really love doing
5. yes, some people have it all: they have a vocation in life and make a ton out of it. Beware though, that for some people doing what they love can become a bit of a bore when doing it for money. The magic tends to sneak out, sometimes. Professional musicians are known to hate performing their hit single for the umptieth time, or take drugs to deal with the touring schedule. So don't look too much at other people's fortune. Remember this from Boris Becker: "I don't want to be the best tennis player in the world. I want to be the best possible Boris Becker".
Excellent advice. It's true, but not often considered a valid path, that earning a income doing something that allows you to do your passion in your free time can be a joyful experience. I did it for a while and it worked. I've also just done my passion for income and, although it sounds like the end all, it was super hard, I was broke a lot and I got burnt out sometimes so I wouldn't do it at all and that sucked.
Nonetheless, as of late I'm still identifying as starving artist! 😜 Glutton for punishment.
Excellent way of expressing and summarising this talk
@@karenlorraine2627 imagine yourself to be a flourishing artist, where money flows to you in an avalanche of abundance, change your thinking, change your life🙂
Thanks for your comment, it is a gem hidden on YT.
Quoting Boris Becker is the best
Indeed, this has opened my eyes. ❤
I wrote half a page in my diary explaining the answer to the second question only and I can't believe how true. Its like I just discovered myself right now.
Thank you so much.❤🎉
The happier 20% each knew 5 things:
1. Who are you? - What is your name?
2. What do you do? - What is the one thing that right now you feel supremely qualified to teach other people?
3. Who do you do it for?
4. What do those people want/need? (1 or 2 words)
5. How do they change as a result?
To save your 10 Minutes ^^
1. Lucie
2. Bake
3. Teenagers/people who like cake
4. delicious food at home
5. Diabetes
I probably shouldn't do that
lmao
Seriously? Cake? Get another vocation and stop fucking people up with insulin-challenged food!
And maybe you SHOULD do that. People are always going to eat cake. Doesn't matter if you make it or not. Diabetes is just a result of excessive-ness. Sorry if I may have misguided you. That isn't my intention. I just said what I think.
never say "sorry" to a jerk.
It's not. Some are born with it. Some, like me, develop it as a side effect of medication. Some no longer produce insulin. Cake is not the culprit. Everything in moderation! :-)
I'll be honest. I came into this really hoping it would help me figure my life out. When he asked question number 2, I paused the video and sat there for a long time.......... I don't have an answer :S Help me
Bro although we have 1 life, but life have many purposes which changes during different phases of your life. a 5 year young boy can not share same purposes once he is 60. it changes just like satisfaction which people confuses as a single time achievable destination but its opposite its multidimensional. you just can not be satisfied just once it will reach at a saturation point. consider life and satisfaction as a empty glass which could be filled by water or wine or etc.(your heart and mind). when u fill that glass with something you feel good and satisfied during that phase until it is finished and glass gets empty again. than you should not be depressed that ohh it got empty you should fill it again with something water, vodka, taqilla or something to again be satisfied. so there is no 1 purpose and we would never have to be satisfied just once we need to keep filling it whenever it gets empty. now finding out what to fill with with which can make you happy during that phase is all together a different topic if you want i can create a video for that and share with you.
I feel better. I at least made it through question three before giving up on myself. 😕
you are not alone...if I had been able to answer that question I wouldn't have been watching the video...hope it makes you feel better to know you are not alone
g4111 the only way you can truly find your life purpose is by getting to know the one who created you. Jesus :) because of the fact that He created us He is the only one that can truly help us understand and reveal to us why we are alive in the first place
Jennifer Montejo this is so true! Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you!
This is inspirational. I have been struggling looking for my purpose in life and is still a big question for me. I know i wanted to do lots of thing and this is a great guide to really find what i wanted to do. Hopefully I could find mine.
Those questions can only be answered by people who know their life purpose. There's a reason that the audience answered to their name, but hardly anyone answered the rest of the questions. He had a nice attempt, but he failed to think from the perspectives of the people who actually need this sort of a TED talk to help them figure out what they want in life.
Just having the time to consider having a life purpose is something of a privilege.
Thinking what you love and what you are Uniquely qualified to do can be two different things.
@@brucebalmighty1 exactly what I was thinking too. I may love to dance and to write, but I am in no way qualified to do either.
Well here's the thing...no one's going to truly learn their life purpose from a 10 minute video on RUclips. No matter how good the video is.. that's just not reality. These are just some thought stimulating concepts and questions that he's giving people in order to get them thinking. it's a helpful perspective to try to assist you on your journey of figuring out what your purpose is. Because the truth of the matter is that the only person who can tell you what your true purpose in life it is, is yourself.
Plus you can also just answer that with your current day job ... doesnt mean it’s your life purpose. I work in a “helping profession” other people are very impressed by... but its full of narcissistic assholes all basking in exactly that and I hate it so much it outweighs any lives I may have changed by helping them.
In 10 minutes with a heartful energy he taught how to know your life purpose. Simple, easy and really puts you in a mental healthy position. Thank you. I am going to watch other teds talk with the same title but I think none of them will be this easy and useful.
5 Question to Ask Yourself:
1)Who are you (name)
2)What do you love to do / what do you feel supremely qualified to teach others
3)Who do you do it for?
4) What do those people want or need?
5) How do they change or transform as a result?
Thank you! I was rewatching this video just to catch these questions in detail. Appreciate this.
Thank you
Anyone else got stuck on nr. 2?
@@K4113B4113 me!

A great model. A pattern I'm noticing in pursuit of wisdom is that true happiness and peace comes from helping others progress in their own journeys.
