I have an older FS40 Trimmer that was hard to start, if started, so I purchased a Carburetor, luckily it was for a newer model, and I returned it. I removed the Spark Arrestor, put fire to it, removed the carbon deposit, and now it runs like a champ. I did have to adjust the idle control screw to eliminate the staling when the trigger was released. Not often does one find a DIY Video that is entertaining and informative. Thank you...

While the type of oil might have an effect, it also produces more carbon when you aren’t using Wide Open Throttle. These machines are usually designed to be WOT 100% of the time so if you’re just puttin’ around, blipping the throttle, it produces more carbon. Hope this helps!

I hope this was it. I’ve been having the same problem with both my km91r and br600. It’s 11 at night and I just went down to my basement and removed the screens from both of them. Both very black. I don’t think my wife would appreciate me starting them up right now 😂 but fingers crossed for tomorrow. They would both run ok when starting from cold but the minute I stopped them and pick them up a few minutes later they’re both running like crap. It’s not the amount of oil because I measure it to the drop and I also just changed all the fuel filters, air filters and spark plugs. So I’m really hoping this is it.

Got a weird one. My FS 40 runs like a champ for about 15-20 minutes and acts like it ran out of gas. But viewing show still a third of a tank. And it will crank and idle just fine forever, but when you touch the throttle is dies. Replaced air filter last year as it wouldn't run, but would run without air filter. New filter resolved that issue. This new issue has me scratching my head raw. I thought wow at 1st. What the heck is a spark arrestor? Took mine off, not really that black, but burned it a few times and blew it off and clean as new. No luck... Thinking new carb is my next option. But why does it run for 15 minutes before I have the issue? And if I wait a day, it will run again for about 15 minutes. So weird.
