This guy is the man. Spot o. with mine. I took carb off 3 times, messed with the throttle cable. adjusted the carb. Was about ready to smash it. A 16mm, torch and a man who knows his sh*t about engines. BAM RUNS LIKE A CHAMP.
Stihl are the best I've had my stihl fs90r for 6 years and haven't changed shit on it and it runs tommrrow I got to clean the spark arrestor cause it boggs
Thank you, i spent hours last simmer mucking about with fast and slow mix jets, that did nothing. Fired it up this year same thing no revs, after watching your Video 10 mins fixed! Running perfectly,.and I was about to buy a new one. Thank you Sir
This did the trick for my Stihl 110. This problem was mentioned in my owners manual, but I never would have thought to check the exhaust without this video. Thank you.
Absolutely works. Spark arrestor may look different than in video. Mine was just a flat screen held in with a single screw. Once it was cleaned it ran like it was new.
You are a kind man for sharing your knowledge thank you very much. This happened to my FS 38 when it was just out of warranty. The lawn mower shop where i bought it charged me $120 to fix it for the same problem. The FS38 are a great whipper snipper! Thanks again.
THANK YOU! IT FIXED MINE! AFTER, GOING ROUND AND ROUND ON THE CARB, FUEL SYSTEM. MINE WAS A LITTLE NEWER, OR AT LEAST A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN PICTURED, BUT IT STILL WORKED!
Great video! You just showed me how to fix mine. It's running like new now. I don't have a torch, but I have a set of Stihl hedge trimmers and just swapped out the part for now. I'll have to order a new one for the trimmer. Seriously, this is a very helpful video. Thanks a ton!
Thank you very much! Completed a carb refurb and filter replacement with no improvement and then found this video. Worked exactly as you said it would and now my Stihl is running as good as new. 😃👍
Perfect! Slightly different set-up on my FS56-RC, but he was dead right about the problem!!! Spark arrestor screen was completely blocked. Burned it, hit it with compressed air, and she screams again! Thanks man!
Have a fs460c. Would start up and idle. But as soon as I gave it the gas it would die down. Glad I watched your vid. Soon as you said 9 out a 10 times I new it was the prob. Almost brought it to get serviced. You probably saved me a 100 bucks. Thanks mower med. It has so much more power. Just like new👍
Excellent Advice! Thank you very much. I would never guess that STIHL would place spark arrestor on trimer. They love to make life more difficult. Interestingly my STIHL chainsaws that cut wood in the forest (larger risk of fire than grass) don't have one. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Local garden tool repair man told me it was probably worn out and wanted 2 weeks and $ 60 to look at it ? its only had about 10 hour's use from new consequently I didn't believe him, so i replaced the carby, air filter and fuel filter " got the whole kit for $ 12.83 from ebay with free postage " but alas no luck but im going to do this tomorrow and i am 100% sure that will fix it. Thank you legend !
Man you are awesome! I've been spending a lot of time trying to get my father-in-law's FS 55 weedeater running right and wasn't sure what else to do until I saw this video thank you very much!
Wow! Thought I was going to have to buy a new weedeater! Had replaced carb and fuel filter and plug then did a search on Stihl not reving up, did as you said (screen was completely stopped up) RUNS LIKE NEW! THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks. I did exactly as instructed, my Stihl trimmer has a screen attached to the “exhaust pipe”. 15 mm socket brought it out easily. The screen ( spark arrestor?) was maybe 30% blocked. I heated it up to cherry red with a propane torch. Reassembled and it worked like a charm.
Completely went through the carb today with no change in behavior and your video got me straightened out. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the assistance.
I've been having trouble with my Stihl for years. I always changed the Spark plug, air filter, and Gas Filter. I never knew about this exhaust filter. I had to fish mine out, since it got detached from the screw. Not sure if this was a good choice but I used battery cleaner to clean off the screen. I was so impressed on the way it operated after I did this. Feel as if I got a new machine. Thanks, very helpful video.
You legitimately just saved me close to $1k as I was grabbing for my keys to go buy a new weed eater (was going to bite the bullet and go battery powered) but then found this video. THANK YOU!
Thank you! I have a 15+ year old FS46 that was one step away from the trash bin. I had done a carb rebuild, then new carb, new plug, new fuel lines and filter, new, new and new, but still ran poorly. I ran across this vid and did not realize it had a spark arrestor located inside the muffler. It was completely clogged up with oily black grime. I did exactly what you described with a propane torch, and now it runs like new again. Hindsight, maybe the slight blue smoke it would produce when running should have been a hint all along. Now no more smoke.
I fooled around with my FS38 thinking it was the carb or possibly bad fuel but no matter what I did it still would not rev up. Was heading to a repair shop but I viewed this first, went back to the garage and cleaned the spark arrestor and had it running in no time. Saved me many dollars.
I wish I would have found this two weeks ago. I have a Homelite CS26 trimmer. I could only get it to run at half choke. Open choke bogged it. Went to start it one week later, no pop, nothing. Changed carb, no start, change ignition module, no start. Opened up the muffler and all this oil came pouring out of the exhaust. Different setup than your spark arrester, but I could have saved $50 with a simple muffler clean. I had no idea. I'm not much of a 2 cycle mechanic, but I know now. Thanks!
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!!! I changed the carb, and everything and it still bogged down. I was about to toss this, but I watched your video, took the arrestor off, and BAM!!! Good as new! Thank you!
woooo. you saved my ass on this one!!! lol. Never worked on a stihl before.. cleaned the carb.. it wouldn't even run better on a little starting fluid.. this spark arrestor was it!
I have an FS-38 that was bullet proof, then I noticed one day I had bogging down, I love the STHL because I just order a HURZL off the river, and I usually good to go. This time no luck, so I thought I was going to have to buy another. Came across this video. Had no torch, so I used PB and a fine wire brush. Thank you Jeremy for saving me another $150 for a new one. Thank STHL for saving me from all the headachs of box store cheapie weed wackers. You can't go cheap in Florida!
Thanks, pulling my hair our with my fs460, this was the problem just sprayed a bit of brake clean on it and put it on the stove burner for 5 mins to burn it all off
I tried all the adjustments on my carb after replacing it to a new carb and still wouldn’t work. I saw this video took my torch and cleaned that screen and it runs like new!! Thank you very much for the video!!
Question. I have an older Stihl FS 120 and I suspect that the spark arrester screen is plugged. However, it isn't part of a removable plug like you removed from this newer model. It appears to be built into the muffler. Can this be cleaned? And.....how? It doesn't appear to be held in with a screw like my FS 100.
Thanks for the video! Just tried it on my weed eater and it worked! Wish I would’ve saw this before I spent $25 replacing all my fuel lines and filter😂
mine did the same thing it was a stihl fs 46 i got tired of the exhaust getting stoped up so it too a nitro rc car exhaust pipe and put it on as a straight pipe it runs better then ever and it sound good and has a lot more power
On the newer ones, there's just a small rectangular screen that's held in with a flathead screw. If you come in from the side with a skinny flathead you can get to it easily. I took out that screen and probably won't put it back in.
Awesome! On my Stihl FS-94R the spark arrestor is a rectangular screen, about 3/4"x2.5". Pulled it out, it was all gooked up. Held it with a pair of hemostats, propped it up, hit it with the propane torch. It lit up, burned off the gook, then I wire brushed it, reinstalled it, and the string trimmer worked like a champ. Thanks so much.
take your exhaust off and make sure the piston has the port closed and tate a flat head and scrape it out with it then spak degreaser in the port and pour it out then wipe it out with a q tip
I have a 4cycle trimmer. It doesnt seem to run at full RPM's (It still fairly new) there are no carb adjustments. I thought I would drill out the exhaust to add a bit more power but that didnt seem to help. If any thing it might have done worse. Do I need back pressure to reach full rpms. Any suggestions? The next thing I was going to do is higher octain fuel
hmm, quick fix, nice one :-) it still has a slight boggy effect, is it the exaust port thats coated with carbon or just a tad too small? Or do they allways have that slight boggy effect?
This guy is the man. Spot o. with mine. I took carb off 3 times, messed with the throttle cable. adjusted the carb. Was about ready to smash it. A 16mm, torch and a man who knows his sh*t about engines. BAM RUNS LIKE A CHAMP.

Consider yourself Lucky to get a year maybe 2 out of a stihl 4 mix
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1
I run it without a an air filter and usr defogger every 2nd or 3rd use. Seems to be the trick.
11 year old video. This dude saved me from taking my fs240 to the shop. Excellent video, well done, and THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
This video just saved me a ton of aggravation and possibly buying a new unit.
Thanks !!!
Thank you, i spent hours last simmer mucking about with fast and slow mix jets, that did nothing.
Fired it up this year same thing no revs, after watching your Video 10 mins fixed! Running perfectly,.and I was about to buy a new one. Thank you Sir
Believe it or not this fixed mine, I had taken the carb off 3 times till I saw this video and tried it. THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!
Same here, lol. Beauty fix!
I need shoulder surgery because I waited until all I could do is watch RUclips first. Best 2:33 video I’ve seen in a long time.
I thought I was going to have to adjust the carb. Tried this first and worked like a dream. Thanks!!! Saved me some $$$$
Thanks man... saved me some headaches... replaced the carb, fuel tank and filter... same problem... spark arrestor was the ticket!
You are a kind man for sharing your knowledge thank you very much. This happened to my FS 38 when it was just out of warranty. The lawn mower shop where i bought it charged me $120 to fix it for the same problem. The FS38 are a great whipper snipper! Thanks again.
Boom! She's screaming like a beast again!
Thank you.
Exactly the problem I was having and the solution to the problem was exactly what I needed. My machine is now working as expected. Thanks!
THANK YOU! IT FIXED MINE! AFTER, GOING ROUND AND ROUND ON THE CARB, FUEL SYSTEM. MINE WAS A LITTLE NEWER, OR AT LEAST A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN PICTURED, BUT IT STILL WORKED!

Unbelievable. It worked! I used a few matches since didn’t have a torch. Thank you. Was getting ready to take to the repair shop.
Thank you very much! Completed a carb refurb and filter replacement with no improvement and then found this video. Worked exactly as you said it would and now my Stihl is running as good as new. 😃👍
Legend!! Did this and it sorted the problem fully. I’ve got a new trimmer again !! Thanks so much…
Perfect! Slightly different set-up on my FS56-RC, but he was dead right about the problem!!! Spark arrestor screen was completely blocked. Burned it, hit it with compressed air, and she screams again! Thanks man!

Brilliant...I was about to replace the carburettor when I found this ,,,fixed it for nothing...thanks so much..
Thanks, sorted me out today in about two minutes on the gas camping bbq ; ).
Spot on. Fix the problem and saved me a trip to the service center. Thanks
Thanks for a simple to the point video! Got me going after assuming I had a restricted carb circuit!!! Greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks! A 5 minute fix after spending 2 hours playing with the carb!
I'm exactly like the rest, did a full carb rebuild to no avail. Thanks, you the man. NZ.
Glad I found this video. Saved me a lot of time and headache
Bang on. 100% right. Easy fix and $0. Thank you.
Great advise only took ten minutes to do and wow running like new
Thanks heaps

Great advice. Mine was a screen in the exhaust, but the same principle. It solved the problem. Thanks!
Wow amazing something so simple thank you for sharing this tip.. Mine does the same. Cant wait to get off work lol to clean the exhaust..
I fooled around with my FS38 thinking it was the carb or possibly bad fuel but no matter what I did it still would not rev up. Was heading to a repair shop but I viewed this first, went back to the garage and cleaned the spark arrestor and had it running in no time. Saved me many dollars.

Thanks for the tip! Pulled the spark aerator and it rips again! Cleaned it up and works like new! 👍🏼
Thanks, pulling my hair our with my fs460, this was the problem just sprayed a bit of brake clean on it and put it on the stove burner for 5 mins to burn it all off
Top man. Sorted my Stihl FS38 in about 8 mins. Have to follow this cat. Subscribed.
This fixed my FS 38. Thank you!
I tried all the adjustments on my carb after replacing it to a new carb and still wouldn’t work. I saw this video took my torch and cleaned that screen and it runs like new!! Thank you very much for the video!!
The most helpfully satisfying vid I've watched in a long while! Thx!!
Was just about to through this machine out and buy a new one saved me $200.00 thanks
Glad I came across this video. Brought a couple stihl weed eaters home from the dump this fixed both of them.
Short, to the point, and exactly what I needed! Awesome video! Thanks for posting!
So what else can it be if it's not the screen clogged up?
Nice explanation and solution. Performed this on my Stihl FS55R whip and got it running like new. Thank you!
Thanks for the video! Just tried it on my weed eater and it worked! Wish I would’ve saw this before I spent $25 replacing all my fuel lines and filter😂
I did this and it's working great now. Thanks 🙏
Exactly the vid I needed, saved me over $200. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip.... worked like a champ!!!!!
Friggen amazing. I will look at that! So simple but not obvious.
Super very obvious to the trained to cycle technician. That’s why I love doing these videos to help the not so trained ear
Did the trick. Thanks so much for this vid
Dude your the man, RUclips once again for the win
Fixed mine!! Works perfectly now. Thank you!!!
Daniel Boone glad to help!!
mine did the same thing it was a stihl fs 46 i got tired of the exhaust getting stoped up so it too a nitro rc car exhaust pipe and put it on as a straight pipe it runs better then ever and it sound good and has a lot more power

Thank you so much worked perfectly. Saved so much time and aggravation. Some things are timeless.
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much. I replaced my fuel, plug, air filter, took off the carburetor and cleaned it and nothing worked. This did.
The exact model & problem i had. Used a lighter & steel brush instead still worked liked a treat. Cheers man great vid 👍
Thanks very much, been trying to fix this weedeater for like 2 weeks, you rock 💪
Great video. Thank you!
Yep mine did it today, thanks for the quick fix info
Excellent !
Thanks for the informative video. That instantly solved my issues. Well done.
Exactly what happened to my FS45,once decarborised ran like new.
Worked perfect! Thank you so much! Saved me a huge headache of bringing to get fixed and $$$$
Could be a stupid question but if I don’t have a torch is there any other recommended ways to clean it that won’t affect it?
Replace it
Yeah makes sense haha
You the man Jeremy!! Thanks for taking the time to post this video. Much appreciated!!!
awesome that’s what was wrong with mine, thanks so much
Yeah thank you for sharing your knowledge of the spark arrestor. You saved me money and aggravation. My weedeater runs like new again
You are a hero sir!
Replaced my spark arrestor and still have the same problem.
First thing is first, do a cylinder and crank case pressure and vacuum test
You was exactly right
Thank you so much, great video, I order a new carb and it was just this little filter the whole time
Exactly what mine is doing thanks
Thanks man,,, doing mine now that I know....You rock, have a blessed day
Thanks for putting this on RUclips. I got so pissed I threw it at the ground and swore at the bloody thing. It made me feel better though 🙂.
take your exhaust off and make sure the piston has the port closed and tate a flat head and scrape it out with it then spak degreaser in the port and pour it out then wipe it out with a q tip
This was exactly it. Heat gun did the trick. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much I been thinking I had a fuel problem
I have a 4cycle trimmer. It doesnt seem to run at full RPM's (It still fairly new) there are no carb adjustments. I thought I would drill out the exhaust to add a bit more power but that didnt seem to help. If any thing it might have done worse. Do I need back pressure to reach full rpms. Any suggestions? The next thing I was going to do is higher octain fuel
if cleaning the screen doesn't fix it what would you do next?
What about the 1 out of 10 of us where this doesn't work? What should we check?
hmm, quick fix, nice one :-)
it still has a slight boggy effect, is it the exaust port thats coated with carbon or just a tad too small?
Or do they allways have that slight boggy effect?
Always forget about that dam spark arresting device. Thank you
I don't have a MAP gas torch. Can you use carb cleaner and soak it clean?
This fixed my fs240 right away.
Exactly the problem and the solution. Cheers🍻
