I was just about to put another new carb on my Husqvarna 128LD. I have the same problem as a lot of other folks, my trimmer would only run half choked. Decided to order the carb tools and give this adjustment a try. It’s 10 years old and now runs better than ever. Thanks Steve!

Just got a used Stihl FS 80 with a backpack harness. It was in perfect condition But the man that owned it couldn’t hold it up anymore. He went with an electric weedeater. The carburetor was out of adjustment so I watched your video a couple times and now Runs like a charm! Idle is perfect and seems to have full power. Took me a full beer though! Thanks Steve!👍🏼😊
You are an excellent and knowledgeable small engine mechanic Steve! I look for your videos first and if I find one I know you will have the answer. An added benefit is that I have used your videos for several seasons to tune my tools. Can’t say thanks enough. 👍
If your model has tuning screws with a special head designed to prevent you from tuning them with normal tools, you can buy the special screw driver. Or you can take a dremel with a cutoff wheel and grind a slot into it for a flathead screw driver. My carb isn't quite as pretty now (I had to cut through some extra material around the screws too), but it got me tuned up without having to wait to get the tools! Wonderful video.
Thank you Steve. Used your instructions on a trimmer that I have never had running well. It's now running great with excellent trigger response. You have save so much frustration with these machines and there is a real sense of achievement getting it running so well.
My trigger response was slow on my Husqvarna, and the weedeater would sometimes die if I pulled the trigger too fast. I just got the carb adjuster tool set you have listed in the Amazon link. I cleaned the air filter and made sure the line was out. I did exactly what you said to do. The high speed was already pretty good, but I found the sweet spot on the low adjustment, and the thing screams when I pull the trigger now! And it only took me about half a beer to do it. Thank you, sir!
Video 6yrs old this video but my wife’s RedMax string trimmer was running horribly and head didn’t want to turn. Put grease in the head. Removed front cover and shaft to see that the disk the clutch assembly engages with turned freely and was clean. Then I adjusted the carb per this video and it runs great! Thank you.
No carburetor to adjust. No fuel lines to replace. No filter to replace. No spark plug to replace. No gas to mix. I’m sticking with electric. It’s smarter.
I was able to do this without the tool from Amazon. I fabricated an adjustment tool out of brass tube 0.25"/0.188" ID and gently tapped it down on the screw and was able to turn both of them easily. Following your tuning tips, I was able to (accidently) trim the paint off the fender of my trailer before I could release the throttle. Thanks a million! Worked like a charm!
Thank you for your thorough description to adjust the high and low throttle fuel mixtures, plus the safety advice to work in a well ventilated area. Your video solved the problem I was having with my Bolens BL 110 weed wacker and saved me from having to replace it. The pacman screwdriver for my weed wacker was 6 bucks and change on Amazon, so I opted for a complete 10-piece carburetor screwdriver toolkit for 10 bucks so I have tools for all my small engines. I admire the well stocked bar in your shop. You da man!
Worked perfectly for a back mounted unrelated weed whacker! Thanks for the great advice. Definitely recommend staying with the high speed screw as suggested (low speed screw first on chainsaw)
My daughter had one given to her because it wouldn't run . I did just what he said and wow. Fired up and fine tuned. Wow ! Runs great 👍. Thank You very much.
Thank you Steve, I want to buy you a beer! I have the same FS 55, that had bad fuel in it. Hands up for that one... I didn’t have time and thought it best to take it to my local garden machinery workshop. They told me the carb was shot and tried to charge me £150 to fit a new one... I stripped it and put it in a sonic bath for 30 mins, turned as you said. Runs perfectly now. I’m not going to that workshop ever again... Thumbs up Steve!
I followed his expert tuning instructions on my replacement carburetor for my vintage FS55 Stihl Trimmer and it now works perfectly. It feels more powerful and starts up easier than when I bought it new. Great video!
I have to admit that it's people like Steve that keep me coming back to RUclips for most of my questions or concerns....lots of people who are still looking out for others lol
Thanks Steve! I restore motorcycles and have 2 off road race cars but this video really helped me with all my 2 stroke small engines. I really appreciate the time and thought you put into your videos. I am a fan. Cheers!
Steve ,I just watched your video on how to tune in my fs38 stihl line trimmer ,I did what you said,my trimmer works perfect now,I only bought it three weeks ago and when using it,either you had to hold the throttle all the way down and then it was too fast, but now I can control how fast I want it to go,thanks Steve for the information,it only took me five minutes to do that, and now I have the perfect trimmer, thanks again.
Perfect! I finally got my weed eater going after it sat for about 5 years cause it wouldn’t stay running. I had cleaned the carb and did everything I could think of to get it started. Then when it DID start it wouldn’t stay running. Then it would die when I hit the throttle. Best advice was how to start by seating then backing off. I was able to get it idling so I could do the adjustments. You are fantastic! Thank you thank you thank you!
it took me a12 pack and i almost got it perfect.... i will go to the store first thing in the morning and by some more beer and try again today... thax
That didn't fix my problom.about ready to give this fs130 flying lesson.it runs great until it warms up then it coughs and farts and runs like craps, put on new carb. New fuel lines, filter, air filter,s.plug
I was spewing firey words at my Stihl FS 55R today when I got half way thru my job and everything quit working, bogging down, no idle! I came into the garage, started half my drink of choice and fixed the carb based on this video. Now I'm taking the kids golfing this afternoon with the $$$ I saved from taking it to the mechanic. Steve, many thanks!!!
These videos are awesome. I have a Stihl KM 55R that I've owned for about 8 years and it suddenly quit starting this summer. I watched your tune-up video and for $16 I replaced the carb, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter and fuel line and got it running yesterday. Ran great but died when I let off the trigger, no idle. I'm confident that when I adjust the carburetor per your instructions that it will be running like new. You saved me $200! CHEERS Steve!
Thanks for sharing the knowledge Steve! I can't tell you how many times I've re watched this video to refresh my memory on how to tune carbs like a pro! Also my chainsaws thank you for helping me keep them in tip top shape! You're the best!
If after using this tutorial you're still having trouble with engine RPMs and/or stalling, please check if your trimmer carburetor has a clutch adjustment screw. My trimmer is an old Stihl FS36. Besides the high and low speed screws it has a clutch adjustment screw located below the two screws. It's slightly bigger then the others. If you unscrew it way out then on low RPMs the head will spin very fast. You need to screw it in enough so that the head stops spinning but the engine doesn't stall. If you screw the clutch screw too far in while the engine idles, the trimmer will turn off. I suggest to unscrew it half a turn, start up the trimmer, let it idle then very slowly turn the clutch screw in untill the engine stops. Make note of this position, unscrew it one quarter and now the engine should idle perfectly, and the head should not spin. If it does, you need to fiddle with this screw a little more. Eventually, you will get it. Naturally, the location and type of clutch screw may vary per model. Please see the manufacturers manual for reference. Also, I found that when adjusting the low speed screw a certain amount of turns, it is best to do the same amount of turns with the clutch screw, with the reference point being the lightly seated position as Steve describes it. The manual advised this but does not specify the amount, so sticking to a 1:1 ratio is a good starting point. Other than that, thanks for the video Steve!
The best guide to tuning up that i have seen. Great visual, great instructions and if you follow what is said and seen, then you will have success. Thank you.
Perfect! I had a Stihl trimmer not wanting to stay running. I cleaned the spark arrestor which helped, but did not resolve the issue entirely. So I ordered a new carb, and your video was excellent on how to adjust it. My FS46 Stihl is humming once again. Thanks for your instructional video.
Steve made this SO SIMPLE. It worked great for a Troy Bilt string trimmer that was given to me because it didn't run right. The only obstacle for me was finding a way to turn the adjustment screws. After the adjustment, the unit starts easily, idles well, and has plenty of power at high speed. Thank you Steve. Your videos have taught this DIY'er a lot.
Hi Steve, from down under in Australia. I have just watched two of your videos and must say that I was very impressed with your laid back but informative and educational approach. I have just bought a carby kit for my Stihl SH55 blower and planned on fitting it tomorrow. The problem being that it starts but wont rev, but after watching one of your videos, I am going to remove the spark arrestor first to see if that makes any difference. But don't worry as I realise the safety issue of not having one, so will purchase a new one if this turns out to be the problem. I currently have three pieces of Stihl equipment and overall have been pretty happy with all of their products. I have saved you in my bookmarks so that I can easily access your help videos in the future should I need any help. I'm glad you were enjoying a Carona in one of the videos as I enjoy the beer, but am currently sipping on a Hahn Super Dry.
Thank you Steve, that is the first time that I have seen a video on this that I could understand. I have a 2004 stihl fs 55 rc trimmer that I'm trying to keep going and I'm no mechanic just barely a parts changer and this is a great help to me. Thanks again
I must say this was an excellent tutorial on how to tune the carb. I just installed a new one on my FS 90R and was very helpful. Right to the point and good video. Mine was a one beer job. I was thirsty. what can I say.
Aww man!!! I watched this video months ago... thought I remembered it all.... spend the last 45 minutes wasting time.... had the hi and low speed screws backwards!! Watched video again... 5 minutes and a full beer (i suck em down!!!) later.... purrs like a kitten. Thanks so much Steve!! Your videos are priceless!
Thank you so much for this simple and very informative video! It is very empowering for me to be able to work on my own equipment. My husband is European and is not very familiar with carburetors and small engines. And it is such a pain to take anything to the shop because i will be without for several weeks! Thank you again!
@@BPatches701 I was thinking the same thing, after all you don't just buy a bike from Wal-Mart and start doing tricks on it as soon as you leave the store. You might want to check everything out before you start putting your life on it's wheels lol
I have 1 question about this: why you can adjust trimmers for full rpm and not on chainsaw, doesn't they have same carbs. THANK YOU for your amazing videos.
Thanks a million Steve. All I knew was turn both screws in then back out 1 1/2 turns. Then just tweek both of them until weed eater seems to be working OK but had no idea just what exactly I was doing and why. You've saved me from so many frustrating afternoons when I couldn't get it to work Now there is a "reason to this madness" Next beer is on me, Bud.
Thanks for making it clear which screw is which and starting with high screw on WOT then adjusting idle screw and clutch grab. I live at sea level and none of our gear comes out of the factory assuming sea level.
You had me at "this job will take about half a beer". The process worked well for me. I couldn't get the plastic protectors off, actually cracked one trying, so I left them on and accessed the screw through the hole in the protector. They must have changed something on my model. My Stihl is now running like a champ.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Younger generation do not know how lucky they are to have youtube and people like you to learn from. I got one foot in the grave and still learning.
Thanks for this video. I bought a brand new cub cadet trimmer last year and it never ran great. Always had to have it part choked. Now it runs like it should! Super easy to follow your instructions Steve. Thanks so much:)
I did this same thing to my cheap snot green Poulan P1500 trimmer. It’s 9-10 years old and still runs like a beast. I just picked up a Husqvarna 128LD because I wanted to upgrade to a straight shaft trimmer, but that little $79 Poulan is still a screamer. But I did a little creative engineering and used an electrical spade connector on the end of a small screwdriver to get the H/L screws adjusted.
Do you have a video on adjusting a tiller carb? I’m new to working on small engines and you’ve become my go to. Currently I’m working on two tillers, both have new carbs, one bogs and the other only runs with the choke on. Thanks!
So while you are adjusting the HIGH speed screw you want to start the engine and hold the throttle trigger in as your adjusting the screw correct? And opposite with the LOW speed screw?
Yep, my new whipper was set on lean/stumble in the name of low emissions. After this video it is more efficient and uses less fuel thereby actually decreasing emissions. Thanks for all the great videos.
I watch videos over and over on how to set the idle, none of them work! your video was the first That allowed me to set my new carburetor! Awesome job!
I adjusted my weed eater your way a year or so ago and it's been running great. I didn't think much about it until recently when my brother in law used it at my parents house. After doing about a fifty yard by 10-15 foot wide swath along the side of the driveway, (he looked like he was swinging a scythe, making it look so easy) he came over to where I was working and asked "What in the world did you do to that weed eater? It's a HOSS!". It's really not a Hoss, it just thinks it is. It's a 25cc trash picked Murray engine that I put a cheap new carb on, replaced the boom with a Troybilt attachment type, put on a Shakespeare Max Load PRO Bump Head (the most expensive part in the whole set up) with .080 Ugly Line. It's a sweet combination but your carb tuning method made a HUGE difference. Thanks!
Steve, I have the Stihl 45C trimmer. It's 6 years old and would hardly run. Bought the tune up kit for it and followed your direction to the T and bro, this thing runs and handles better than when I bought it! Same for my Poland Pro chain saw. Your the man! Thanks so much! Love your channel.
Thank you for making this video. Actually Thank you for making all your videos. I have been watching your videos because I would like to learn how to keep my equipment running. Today this video helped me. My fs55 wouldn’t stay on and a quick adjustment of the idle and I was back in business. Thank you.
Your videos have helped me enormously. My Husqvarna 128LDX trimmer has NEVER run as well as after high and low speed adjustments. Also you helped diagnose a clogged check valve which led to replacing the original carb. Thanks! Enjoy the beer.
Recently fixed a FS45 for a friend.......new carb.....original had a plugged check valve under the primer bulb. The new carb had springs & limiter caps on the H/L screws, & I wasn't quite sure how to deal with that since I didn't know if tightening them down really bottomed the pins or not. So I went ahead & snugged them down as far as the springs/caps would allow then backed them off 1.25 turns as you suggest & after about 5-6 pulls it fired up.......& it didn't take a lot of fine tuning from there. It took probably about 3-4 full turns to snug each screw so I don't have any idea if it would've even fired up without implementing your process. It's great to have a "base line" to work from........thank you, sir.
Bloody awesome mate! I’ve been through at least 700hrs and 3-4 tune up and she’s running like a dream now after having a heap of drama with an aftermarket carbie
You are spreading the love with your video Steve, giving people back their belief in themselves. Your like the best Uncle as a kid that show you how to do something and when you do it and get it right... you feel like you can fly! (don't take my word for it, just read the comments section!)
Do you have to adjust the carb when changing accessories? I was running fine with a string trimmer but when I switched the end to a brush cutter, it stalls when I hit the throttle. I have fixed it by adjusting the low speed idle out thinking it needs more fuel at throttle start since the brush cutter is much heavier. Did I do that right? And I assume I need to make these changes every time I switch accessories. Great channel too.
I wondered the same thing Steve said to make sure the trimmer line was pulled all the way out before adjusting. Hopefully you will get an answer from someone who knows.
Thanks for all the great content. I've been watching a bunch of your videos today and getting schooled up on tuning everything. You mention not to tune a weedeater the same way you tune a chainsaw. What about a hedge trimmer (I've got an Echo HC-152)? Tune it like a weedeater or like a chainsaw? Thanks for any help you can provide and keep up putting out great content.
Best video on tuning a carb. First try following this it worked. Other videos were terrible, too much talk, couldn't hear, or flat out failed in explaining properly.

Even though you could be taking money away from your business by posting great videos you seem as that doesn't matter. I believe you truly enjoy helping people save money and you are a hell of a teacher. I'm going to drink one for you my friend. Your an awesome dude and thank you so much. God Bless my friend.
WOW! Thank You... and You're Welcome...
Right on
You are an excellent and knowledgeable small engine mechanic Steve! I look for your videos first and if I find one I know you will have the answer. An added benefit is that I have used your videos for several seasons to tune my tools. Can’t say thanks enough. 👍
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Great to hear!
Right on Justin! You're Welcome...
Thank you.
You're Welcome...
Two years ago I threw my gas trimmer across the yard. Went and got the dewalt 40 volt battery trimmer. Love it! I’ll never go back to gas.
I prefer to work smarter not harder.
No carburetor to adjust. No fuel lines to replace. No filter to replace. No spark plug to replace. No gas to mix. I’m sticking with electric. It’s smarter.
But gas engines are fun for guys who have patience and endurance to learn, to grow and to experience and spend time on something
Tried it on my husqvarna weed eater or brush cutter as we call it this Southern side of the hemisphere that wasnt starting.
Worked like new.
Right on
Thanks for clearing this up, those two screws have made a fool of many a man. 🍻
You're Welcome...
Steve, you did a great job explaining this clearly, understandably, and without a lot of unnecessary chatter. All the best, my friend!
Thank You...
You da man!
Right on Joey!
You're Welcome...
Right on Marty!
I followed his expert tuning instructions on my replacement carburetor for my vintage FS55 Stihl Trimmer and it now works perfectly. It feels more powerful and starts up easier than when I bought it new. Great video!
Great to hear!
This worked perfectly. Took exactly half a beer as well 10/10

I am a fan. Cheers!
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
You're Welcome...

My Ryobi trimmer starts on the 53rd pull every time. Think it's time to do this. Thanks!
it took me a12 pack and i almost got it perfect.... i will go to the store first thing in the morning and by some more beer and try again today...

You're Welcome...
Right on Tadd! Thank You...
Thanks for sharing the knowledge Steve! I can't tell you how many times I've re watched this video to refresh my memory on how to tune carbs like a pro! Also my chainsaws thank you for helping me keep them in tip top shape! You're the best!
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Clutch adjustment screw? Hilarious!!!
The best guide to tuning up that i have seen. Great visual, great instructions and if you follow what is said and seen, then you will have success.
Thank you.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Nice work!
Right on Buddy...
This video really helped. I was able to tune a Husqvarna trimmer easily after watching your video. 🍻
Nice work!
Awesome mate! So happy I helped....
Thank you Steve, that is the first time that I have seen a video on this that I could understand. I have a 2004 stihl fs 55 rc trimmer that I'm trying to keep going and I'm no mechanic just barely a parts changer and this is a great help to me. Thanks again
Very welcome
Just did a carb change & maintenance on my unit followed these easy instructions to tune and 100% PERFECTION !!!!
I must say this was an excellent tutorial on how to tune the carb. I just installed a new one on my FS 90R and was very helpful. Right to the point and good video. Mine was a one beer job. I was thirsty. what can I say.

Thank you so much for this simple and very informative video! It is very empowering for me to be able to work on my own equipment. My husband is European and is not very familiar with carburetors and small engines. And it is such a pain to take anything to the shop because i will be without for several weeks! Thank you again!

You literally saved a Stihl weed eater from the dump, it runs amazing after your totorial.

Better yet, do this tune on new stuff, better to not chance running too lean too long and burning it out.
I love the pure quality of your message. All good stuff no fluff or bs. I wish all RUclips’s were this good. Thanks man.
I appreciate that!
Thanks a million Steve. All I knew was turn both screws in then back out 1 1/2 turns. Then just tweek both of them until weed eater seems to be working OK but had no idea just what exactly I was doing and why. Thanks for making it clear which screw is which and starting with high screw on WOT then adjusting idle screw and clutch grab. I live at sea level and none of our gear comes out of the factory assuming sea level.
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with chainsaws, you have saved me a lot of money and time.
Right on Rick...

The tutorial for getting the trimmer back on track after adjusting the L and H screws worked like a charm! 1 and quarter turn ! Thanks Steve!
You're Welcome...
This is the best tuning video on RUclips!
Thanks Hawg..

Right on Buddy! Thank You...
Thanks!

Great to hear!
You're Welcome...
I finished a six pack of beers already trying this.
