- How to Diagnose & Fix a 2 Cycle Trimmer that Only Runs on Choke. You need to see this!
This trimmer is almost brand new and the landscaping company ruined the engine by running straight gas (no 2 cycle oil mix) in the engine. They had to replace the engine and after doing that it would only run on choke. They couldn't figure out what the problem was and asked me to take a look at it. I found 2 common problems for the reason it would only run on choke.
If you have a 2 cycle engine that will only run with the choke on, I think this video will help you diagnose and repair that problem.

Have a landscaping business and switched to battery powered trimmers because got tired of the piss poor overpriced crappy 2 strokes breaking down. It was a wise investment because I saved time and money
Outstanding! Based on this video I compared our trimmer that starts but won't keep running with the one that is o.k. and darn if the fuel lines weren't crossed! Thank you so much! Glad I didn't have to try all the other things but I WILL remember them!
That's the happiness you feel when we start something running thanks for the video
Arrrrr the joy of finding the problem I know it well, sometimes I'm not so lucky but with the help of people like your self we have a better chance. Thanks from Graeme in Australia
Thanks for the visit
I like that you showed the trouble shooting steps to finding the problem.
You've just help extend the life of thousands of small engines.
Be blessed for sharing quietly wisdom. 🙏😊
Thank you and God bless you!
Your tutorials are very well executed, coupled with your high energy personality. A delight to watch! Thank you with gratitude from New Rochelle N.Y.
Thank you…I appreciate your kind feedback
Excellent explanation on how the fuel lines work!! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Boy how simple you make things, would not have even thought about a mix up in the fuel and return line, great help to start sorting out my problem with my Ryobi weed eater, just replaced the carbie but wont run without choke, now know where to start looking, just hope i have the same problem. also didn't know how to tune the carbie but now have an idea, knew about the small adjustment screw in the top of the throttle body but wasn't sure what it adjusted. Thanks heap, am now going to watch your other videos.
I have 2 weedeaters and each one has a similar opposite problem you described. Thanks for sharing your experience. I know what to look at now. 👍🏽
That was worth 15 minutes. Learned something new. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
I agree: step by step 101 instruction is masterful! Thanks a bunch!
Glad I could help
Thanks. Now I know what else to look for. Huge help.
You are amazing I wouldn’t have never thought to do this my weedeater has been running just like you described in this video thank you so much
Glad I could help
Excellent job! Two very valuable pointers. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks. I picked up one that was doing the same thing. The fuel cap wasn't venting good and I think it caused the primer button to vapor lock. Cleaned the fuel cap up and unplug the line between the carburetor and timer button and had to pump the primer button a few times to get the air out and now it runs great. Thanks for sharing the knowledge
Best repair/adjustment video ever. Thank you so much. 👍
Wow, thanks!
There's a whole lot of really good info here about how to troubleshoot different issues. Very nice job.
Thanks
Looks like the sort of thing that happens to me every year preparing for bushfire season, and every year I take it in for a service. You've just saved me a ton of money and heaps of time waiting. Thank you!
Wabbit Season !!
Had same issue on SRM 280T. After porting exhaust, replacing carb, filters, and lines it was the two intake bolts that had loosened over 10 years of use(vacuum leak). Thank you for this informative video
Interesting!
You are a genius. I have about eight weedeaters people gave me that only run on choke. I tried so many different solutions and never even thought about the tank vent. Thank you so much now I have to look at eight of them again LOL😂
Glad I could help
I watched this last night .. I couldn't sleep .. kirk.. I had to go in the garage and work 😅
I have 1 doing the same thing. I changed the plunger because it was leaking then the line was crack so I change it after that it won't run. I will be checking it out again.
Great video. Ill try the vent cap on one of mine that was used in really dirty conditions.
You're friggin wizard! I love your patience and thoroughness. What an amazing video. I just subbed, liked, and saved with this one video. Thank you for being so generous to share your wisdom.
Thank you and welcome
I’ve been fighting sluggish equipment, replacing plugs and rebuilding carbs etc. I never ever would have expected the gas tank vents to be the problem. I can’t wait to give this a try.
I had the exact same problem with my echo polesaw/weed eater and took it back to the dealer I bought it from. They installed a new carburetor. I got it home and it would not run. I drilled a tiny hole in my gas cap to get it to run. Thanks for the info.
Today I was adjusting the carb on a weed eater for quite some minutes and realized it was just out of gasssss…
It’s really a problem and I change them as part of the repairs
Guess I should tell people I replaced it so they will know
@@Loavictorit happens brother! I’ve done it a thousand times man!
Awesome information. I have a leaf blower and a weed eater acting up. won't throttle or run without choke Awesome!!
Very good demostration!
Thanks
Love your trick to test lines… Thank you!
Thanks for your visit
Excellent diagnosis
Man thank you for this video and your time here , I have a 20 year old srm 3100 trimmer and have a new carb in it and only runs on choke and now I know why !!! I got the lines wrong , it was frustrating bc I know the machine is a powerful engine and had never failed me before I just put the lines weong
This may seem common sense but the way you methodically you troubleshoot is super satisfying and really awesome to see.
Good job.
That's what I call a real mechanic.
I've had my Roybi for just over a year now and it's doing the same thing this was. I've never taken the lines off, so I know it's not that, so gonna try the filter and see if that's it.
Thanks so much for ALL the tips!! It's great when I can watch a video that actually helps!
Glad I can help... wishing you the best
Awesome 👌 job thanks my friend. You just fixed my weed trimmer for me. Thank you!
Glad to year that
Hello 👋 my name is joe I learned so much from your video you are a great teacher 👨🏫 have a great weekend 😊
Thank you! You too!
Ok, you are the ONLY one that addressed the crossed fuel lines....which was my problem. Thank you so much for the walk-through. +1 subscriber.
Haha right crossed fuel lines I never looked at that
Great video! Start with the simple stuff and move on up! Crossed fuel lines, I wonder how many people paid for a fix like that! Thanks for your time and sharing! 👍😎✌️🇺🇸
Same issue for the last 3 yes thank you for the fix
Good video, because I found my problems as well. Keep up the good work.
Glad it helped
Wow. Masterclass instructions! 👌
Awesome troubleshooting!
Outstanding!!! This is an excellent video. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
SIR, you are a great little mechanic. I really wish I could do half as much as you can do. Ive never been able to work on my cars like I wanted to so I always had to buy cars in fantastic shape so I dont have to pay huge charges like so many idiots like me end up. I have been very blessed in the cars ive owned. I have a 2011 POLICE Crown Victoria that had a 109,000 on it when I bought it. It was Fleet maintained by the dept motor pool and it was in perfect condition my mechanic asked me if it was the original motor because it was in such beautiful condition. Anyway Im so impressed with your ability the way you got right to the problem. Congratulation on your channel. I wish you were my personal mechanic. I would trust you completely.
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank You .. I think this may actually resolve the issues with my GT200.
Beautiful Catch !! 👍
The excitement when you fix something!
Great done
I have same issue on effco hedge trimmer change carb and gas filter and won't throttle up i will neglect
Vent gas tank i hope same result happen with me
Great job and thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge.
My pleasure!
@@helpinguonline I'm a handy guy and have fancied myself as being able to learn to repair my own 2-cycle and 4-cycle gas tools but it hasn't gone well for me to date. The 2-cycle tools are the truly tough ones, compounded by ethanol fuel and its detrimental effects. Before one learns how to repair them, one needs to learn everything about all of the parts and what can go wrong with any of them. Only then can one be able to go about troubleshooting. I've found that a pedestrian knowledge of 2-cycle engines won't help e.g. assuming issues with clogged fuel filters and carburetors to correct restricted fuel flow, and squirting anything that moves with carburetor cleaner by itself won't help. But your video is one of the best places to start. Thanks again and Good Luck.
Great work. Thanks for taking the time to explain the process
Glad it was helpful
very good in my opinion...but the camera has to get closer, to zoom in for us novices who cant ask anything in real time. And you know wht tey say about ''ASSUME''
Another great video .... keep' up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Thx for this really helpful advice my Honda engine did this and now it is working perfectly thx again for the video
Glad it helped
I had the same problem and the fuel and return was also reversed ,and Yes I did it tweaked the high jet an it runs good again thank you
I really like the part about the open flame and gasoline!!
Another great video. Thank you.
Thanks!
Thank you, my strimmer is having the same problem so I will attempt this when ime free 🤞
I have a trimmer that would only run on half choke for years. It would not start today.
Figured I have nothing to lose by taking it apart.
It's hard to get the thing apart to even work on it. There is a red cover over the top of the engine which is notoriously difficult to remove.
There's 10 different screw types & sizes.
The fuel lines are so old, they're nearly impossible to remove.
Hard to tell if there's even a problem with the choke apparatus. I don't have the skills or experience to know how to fix it if there is.
There was a bunch of fuel in the piston area that came gushing out when I removed the cap under the fuel tank. The gasket ripped in half when the cap came off, so it really can't be reused at this point.
So I'm guessing the engine was flooded in addition to having an air problem.
Any parts that this might need are likely not carried at the local hardware store.
Even if I spent the money on the parts needed, there's no guarantee I could even put this thing back together.
Also, taking it somewhere to try to have them fix it would have been more expensive than buying a new one in the first place.
Solution - don't buy gas trimmers unless you have friends or family with skills & ready access to replacement parts.
The throwaway economy that we've developed is unsustainable, and eventually will come crashing down.
covered it pretty well. now I'm going to try and apply to my line trimmer.
You can do it!
@@helpinguonline haven't gotten it yet. I'm going to try again.
Thanks for the lesson
My pleasure!
Thanks, my strimmer has only run on choke since new, I'll check it next chance I get, with your video to help me.

Thanks man, had the same problem whit my dads new trimmer and could not work it out. Seems he switcht the hoses around when he try to fix a fuel leak. Blast, disasembled the hole machien and cleand it but stil didn't work. Was breaking my head on it but never tought about those darn hoses!
Wow, he is a wealth of knowledge. Thank you.
Our pleasure!
I like your Enthusiasm.subscribed.
Thanks for visiting and welcome aboard
Nice... my weedeater, of almost this exact model has the same issue. Scince the problem started all of a sudden, im guessing its the airhose from the tank. Will check it out. THANK YOU. :)
Excellent video thank you for sharing 👍🏻

Really people give up to easily and don’t think things out or try something different 😊
Good job 👏

Thanks buddy, a lot of great information… I love your enthusiasm ha ha ha
Thanks for stopping by
Very nice diagnosis, sir. Your knowledge of small engines is impressive. Thank you for posting this video.
Nice video,I like how you explain how the vent works.I am a subscriber now. Just a note I would not use the torch over the trimmer gas tank.
Thanks for the heads up... but I was not as close as it looks in the video angle
Lol....close is for horseshoes and hand gernades .
@@varminthunter I had the same thoughts concerning gasoline and a torch particularly since gasoline fumes ignite quite well too
Aww and the Karen's come out !
Brother I appreciate your help
Thank you for helping us out to troubleshoot these little engines. If I may, I would like to ask you if you could do close-up shots of the small details. My eyes are not helping much, and again, thank you. Excellent work!
😊😊😊😊thanks for your diagnosis
I am so going to be asking this man for help if I cant get this strimmer I just brought at an auction. I only had a little mess around with it earlier today and will be trying a new spark plug after I have tried a couple more things hopefully he is still active online :)
Thanks I learned something from that
Good class thanks 😊
Great video thumbs up
Good lesson thanks 😊

I will try this out on my 21 year old stihl trimmer, very interesting video. Jim Byrne here, watching here in Ireland 🇮🇪 😀
My Troy-bilt st75ss(I think, lol) is 20 years old ! Use it to weed whack and I have a Ryobi tiller attachment that fits the shaft for my garden. Rebuilt the carb around 2008 and haven't had a problem since. Sometimes you get lucky and get a great machine! It was my late father's trimmer and I'll never let it go, I guess because it has that tough, never quit quality like the old man. I hope he knows he picked a damn good one😉😏
Great video really appreciate it
Great video helpful 👍 thank you
Glad it helped
Nice video friend...thanks. Guess the old methods are only so good...just because there’s fuel in the tank, doesn’t mean it’s getting to, into, and thru the carb...
This worked! Thanks.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for demo
You bet!
I learned sooo much from this video thx
Thanks for your visit
You sure show me some thing I did not know that is what is wrong with my Echo thank you.
Very good video 👍
Thanks for the visit
Thanks hombre
After messing with 2strokes one too many times I changed all my trimmers and other 2 strokes to battery. Never regretted it because with no longer wasting time with crappy equipment I'm getting more done
Been running 2 strokes for years, and I mean probably dozens, if not hundreds, over 33 yrs in the tree business. Weed eaters and trimmers , all part of the fleet. Slowly getting some battery stuff in the fleet. I keep my saws outside all the time, in the rain, etc. Never hurts them. Now, gotta consider how to keep all the electric tools, covered, and places for all the chargers and spare batteries, for all this new equipment. We are in a new age.
