Best Professions for WotLK Classic World of Warcraft
Wrath of the Lich King - The most popular WoW expansion of all time. With the playerbase reaching it’s highest ever at 12 million subscribers on October 2010. And with news of Wrath of the Lich King Classic on the horizon, you’re probably thinking about how to prepare, because with a new expansion comes new changes, and professions have been changed in a big way in Wrath, which might make you wonder which profession is best for you.
With the addition of profession passive and active bonuses, profession linking, and a ton of new recipes unlocked through profession daily quests, choosing your profession is a really big decision, both in terms of a time investment and gold, and you also really won’t want to have to unlearn a profession and start over.
In this video we’ll be discussing the profession bonuses for each profession both passive and active, how the profession compares to the others, which class should go which profession and the ability for the profession to generate gold. There’s also a new profession added in Wrath called Inscription, and you’ll definitely want to know about what it brings to the game. And by the end of the video, hopefully you’ll know which professions you want to pursue in wrath.
Engineering in Wrath is a lot like Engineering in Vanilla - it’s simply the strongest profession. Engineering in wrath has so many powerful items that can enhance your character in both PvP and PvE situations that you’re basically just at a disadvantage if you’re not an engineer. This time it comes in the flavor of “Tinkers” to your items which are like enchantments.
This is a great change because in the past if you wanted a fun engineering item, you usually sacrificed stats - now in wrath you can keep the high stat best in slot item, but still have a fun engineering tinker attached to it. And if you were wondering, you can’t have both a tinker and an enchantment on an item, it’s one or the other. But if you end up going engineering, you’ll be feeling like inspector gadget in no time. (Bounce sound, character flying off the screen).
First off there’s the Runic Mana Injector and Runic Healing Injector, which grant an increased effect for engineers. So, if you’re playing a mana hungry class, using these Runic Mana Injectors as an engineer can be a great reason to go engineering.
There’s also fun things as always like the Mind-Amplification Dish - which is a tinker to your helm. This allows you to engage in a mental battle with your enemies, attempting to mind control them. This can be pretty nifty if you’re standing on a high ledge and you decide you want your new pet to jump.
The Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket is Best in Slot for PvP,.
There’s also Hyperspeed Accelerators
Another powerful tinker, and is really another best in slot item in PvE for some classes is the Frag Belt.
Nitro Boosts are amazing.
These boots are paired nicely with the Flexweave Underlay tinker. Instead of having a really weak parachute cloak with no stats, you can now attach the Flexweave Underlay to your stat-filled cloak.

Notes about things that were not mentioned in the video:
2:25 The engineering head tinker grants 45 stam, aside from the mind control. This is the highest stamina enchantment in wotlk.
4:04 except nitro boots can fail to burst speed forward. Instead, they have a chance to launch you upwards incredibly fast and for a very high distance. If you have any form of slow fall, a survival CD or land in a pond, you're fine. If you don't, you'll likely die.
Luckily, I haven't seen the launch activate inside dungeons or raids, but I've seen it do it in BGS and the open world.
4:21 you forgot to mention that there are two cloak tinkers with the same slow fall effect and CD. One grants spell power and the other one grants agility.
Also for the tanks, there is an engineering hand tinker with extra armor. It's a really strong one.
6:06 Note about the wormhole and portable mailbox: these items do NOT bind after use so you can trade them and other grand master engineers can use them. Maybe you can send to your alts, lend to a friend or put in the guild bank. Idk if the CD remains after passing them.
You can choose gnomish or goblin specialization. Choosing gnomish will allow you to create arrows that are currently the best ones for hunters and they sell for a lot of gold. (Hunters still use ammo in wotlk).
Engineering also allows you to create googles with nice stats, as well as trinkets. These are nice if you're gearing up, especially at fresh 80.
I know that in classic tbc they changed it so that the chicken trinket didn't work as it used to, but I guess it's worth trying it out in wotlk classic. The chicken trinket will increase the raid melee haste by 5%, which, if proven to still work will be very strong all the way to the ruby sanctum (the last raid).
9:30 jewelcrafting also allows you to create special rings, necklaces and trinkets which are nice for gearing up, especially at fresh 80.
10:54 another great item to have is the super useful and very often forgotten alchemist-only "Infinite Mana Potion" and "Infinite Healing Potion" which have the same effect as the Runic ones and they are in fact infinite.
12:21 just jump in the wotah to clear the debuff
17:04 oh not just one was added in wotlk, but two. The Magnificent Flying Carpet (purple and orange) is a pattern learned at the trainer. And a gnome NPC in Dalaran sells the pattern to create the Icy Flying Carpet (blue) in exchange for frozen orbs. Both fly at 280% speed.
And now that we have mentioned mounts. I know these are from tbc, but don't forget that engineering has the Flying Machine and Fast Flying Machine. And tailoring has the Flying Carpet which is green and flies at 150% speed.
19:45 a small one but a good one and not added in wrath. The shield wards for paladin and war tanks are great. They will absorb a lot of damage until breaking. They can be used by blacksmiths and non-blacksmiths.
22:26 it's worth mentioning that the drums of the wild give a slightly weaker version of gift of the wild. There's also the drums of forgotten kings which will work like Pala kings except for 8% stats instead of 10. These, as you said, are great if you don't have a Pala or druid in your group. The drums from tbc are no longer useful at max level in wrath because they specifically say that they won't work on players above level 70.
And talking about missing raid buffs, scribes will be able to create scrolls of fortitude, similar to the drums added in wotlk, one of these scrolls will buff all your raid members with a weaker version of Prayer of Fortitude (priest stamina buff). Sadly, there is no equivalent scroll or drum for the mages' intellect buff.
23:00 it's worth noting that the spell power bonus from LW is the same as enchanting, blacksmithing (when using two red 23 sp gems in your extra sockets), alchemy(+1 point) and inscription. JC and tailoring are superior as they give about the same sp bonus of 52.
23:24 _Sindragosa in Naxxramas_ you meant Sapphiron 😊👍 no worries tho
29:52 all pets are vanity pets in wotlk classic (I'm referring to these kinds of pets, of course, hunters have a different kind of pets). Pet battles weren't added until Pandaria.
Also, about fishing, there is a rare pet (linked to an achievement) so idk if the pet was added in wotlk. The Crawldad. When you summon it and speak to it, it has a chance to grant a nice stamina buff. It might not be very convenient because of the rarity and buff RNG, but it could be useful sometimes.
33:27 cooking has another great recipe: Spicy Mammoth Treats. A very powerful buff for your pet, and can be used on a demonology warlock's Felguard, hunter's pet or unholy DK's ghoul. This treat will give your pet the well fed buff and increase their attack power and stamina.
Note: to be fair, many people don't know them, so I hope that this list can be insightful and complementary to the video.
Edit: I added more as the video progressed.
Excellent write up filling in gaps. Thank you.
I've seen, and had nitro boots fail on me in ICC before.
Do you have a GDoc formating everything ? ^^
This was the best profession overview for WotLK that I've seen. Despite playing the expansion a lot at a high end back then, I still learned a couple things. Nice job.
Thank you!
I have gone through your videos over the last few days and you are 110% the best wotlk youtuber for advice and guides. Make dungeon and raid guides aswell maybe?
Presentation 5/5
Research 5/5
Thank you so much man. This one really really helped.
All WOTLK cinematics still give me chills. I will be doing enchanting/engineering on an ele shaman.
Same man. Great choice!
It's great. If you want more spell power go tailoring on your shammy, the sp embroidery is good for resto too, and the AP embroidery is perfect for the very reliant-on-procs enhancement.
Engineering is a great choice for shamans imo. It gives them an extra layer of mobility and survivability with the nitro boots and bomb dispenser. And the hand tinker with haste is superb for any spec as they all need a ton of haste.
this is the greatest profession guide ive seen tyvm
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
This video is the best about WotLK professions bonus. Congratulations for your amazing RUclips channel
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Just started for wow for the first time. Thank for the video man
Have fun!
picking up profession is not the hardest part, but leveling them up from scratch is :D
💯
As near everyone wants enginering its a good time to be a gnome. Cheap leveling
im getting soooo HYPED!
Wow was the only full-time job that I enjoyed.
Having played on Private Wotlk you are 100% engineering on every class/spec + whatever extra profession you want. Raiding or PvP engineering is just amazing.
oooh engineering it is! Thanks for the vid Toyhouze!
This is the best wotlk video I had ever seen... perfect
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Ty for this guide man
Np! Glad you enjoyed it!
so well done! tysm!
"...but in Patch 3.3.3, repeating" - Leeroy Jenkins quotes are ALWAYS appreciated! Kudos
awesome dude!
Thanks!
Very nice guide, thanks a lot :)
Thank you :)
thanks, very professional professions review :)
Thank you! Glad you liked it
28:23 haha props for the reference and to anyone who caught it ;p
Great video! I think I go mining and enchanter with my new tank.
27:35
"maxing out at 60 mana" :D
LOL that is hilarious. 60 mana rofl. Thanks man xD
I giggled haha ^^
I'm planning to play my beloved Holy Paladin in Wrath. I'm thinking of my professions being JC & Alchemist. I will also be running alts for every other profession to support the pally raiding.
Definitely stocking up on herbs and ores for the power leveling rush at launch
Good idea! Which do you think will be more valuable?
Copper ore for some reason on all the servers I have ever played on been worth alot and always more than silverleaf/peacebloom. For some reason other ores are always completely worthless, but for herbs/flowers the value almost always increases with level. Not sure if it's just the servers I have played on, but it feels soo strange to me that it is this way since the lowest level supplies are only useful for such a short time and very common.
Most excellent video
thank you :)
best guide video ever!
Thanks so much!
Now that's what I call a guide
Three times during tailoring you said you need imbued netherweave instead of frostweave and I laughed everytime
The subtle humor in this video🤣
1:18 engineering
6:26 jewel crafting
9:25 alchemy
12:08 skinning
13:52 tailoring
17:22 blacksmithing
18:48 inscription
22:02 leatherworking
24:20 herbalism
25:24 enchanting
26:50 mining
28:42 fishing
32:32 cooking
34:00 first aid
For those who didn’t read the description first.
The light weave embroidery is best for shadow priest imo...since your swp once casted will keep the bonus as it is refreshed
Good tip!
The shadow priest discord doubts that... There's been several snapshotting changes over original wotlk, and in the last iteration it did not snapshot spell power (so it's updates every time it resets from mind flay), but it does snapshot crit rating so temporary buffs to crit can be really important. We don't know which version we'll get yet, but it's most likely the last one.
I got my Mechano-hog from a box I fished up doing the Dalaran fishing daily!
WOW!
28:23 yay I got the reference
Big Madseasonshow vibes, nice video
music was great on this video
In warmane i pick up herb and skinning, while a frost lotus these time cost 40G and mamoth hide cost 120G compare to a 20g titanium ore, then i use those gold to buy iceblade arrow, battled hilt, unblind ilvl 264, mechahog and invincible reign
The details you put in this video got me to subscribe. I like it, love deep dives that goes into all options.
One question, if I'm engineer and alch, with alch stone of 40% more from potions, and using runic injector as engineer with increased effect, do those 2 stack to give a LOT more mana back?
Glad you enjoyed it! Based on how it worked back in the day - the two do not stack.
The alchemist stones say "does not stack", but I reckon that's only with other alchemist stones (to make the effect 'unique').
I'd guess that engineers and alchemists can't double up, like you're thinking, because one overwrites the other. No idea if engineers get up to 40% bonus, but it might be less... maybe 20%! Who knows?!
It does not. The alchemist's stone says it increases the effect of any potion you can make, which means alchemy potion, but after you convert your runic mana potions into mana injectors, that counts as an item created by another profession so it doesn't double dip.
an 10/10 vid
Question : As I'm leveling alchemy, do I need to chose one of the 3 specs like I did in tbc or at Wotlk you get all benefits? what do you recommend as its still tbc.
can you do video like this for Cataclysm classic? you are doing best of this type videos.
Wait..i can remember nitro boots breaking sometimes. It blasts you high up in the air.
Professions are so huge in wrath, especially engi! It’s great for pretty much everyone serious about raiding and it’s fun. Some great tips on how to make gold and good info here. Very based video!
100% agree! Thanks!
So mad I dropped engineering on my paladin for enchanting 😂 should’ve dropped mining
@@deantimothy4386 As someone who played many wotlk pservers - mining is a great moneymaker since ores and bars are so valuable and you can make titansteel bars. Unless you're going to be your guild's enchanter or farming low level dungeons with a paladin to get greens I recommend ditching enchanting. If you're an engineer you can also "skin" leviathan, the first boss in ulduar, for a lot of gold. I don't know how it's going to be in classic but you can even do leviathan runs on your alts with a few friends due to the way levi works. You can also suck eternals from clouds in wintergrasp. Plus you get the repair bot and ability to use the AH in dalaran. Engineering is just so busted in wotlk.
That said Wotlk is the alt expansion as well. You want alts to do the cooking daily for spices and probably the mining cooldown as well and tailoring cooldown.
@toyhouze , do you need a min char level for maxing scribe? or can i just buy all the herbs and skill it till end for darkmoon cards with a lvl 70 char?
Great video, thanks. And great additions from Sahid Carrasco. I have one question. Is there a profession worth stacking with alts? Ie alchemy for transmutes or JC? Gold earning wise.
Yeah I'd say Alchemy/JC is powerful for the saronite shuffle. Lots and lots of gold to be made with that combination.
As i recall, BS/JC was the best profession to stack up the stat of your wish due to the prismatic socket from BS and super gem from JC.
I miss using engineering stuff in Arena
Btw, Divine Plea is not affected by haste :)
Great guide! And may i say, How dare thy not mention that, with cooking, you can literally make cupcakes! :D
Haha thank you
Scribe and JC will be your big money makers. Folks can start farming low level mats now (herbs/ore) to put on the AH as folks will be looking to power level. I would like to know if scribe will be available prepatch. I can't remember if it was originally.
Genius
I don't think it will be available, but not sure
most likely will be available in prepatch, as JC was also available in tbc prepatch.
whats the name of soundtrack that starts at the very beginning and plays through entire introduction?
I went engineering/mining as my prof for my first/main (gnome warlock) hopefully it was a good choice….
I'm gonna play three healers in Wrath, which means three engineers and maybe even as many jewelcrafters. And I'm certainly not suckering into the mega-inflated material prices we're seeing already. Oh boy. My miner character is gonna get a looooot of mileage.
I like your videos bro I disagree for enchanting bonus is the only way to get your rings enchant. Yes is less from other profession, but the rest of your gear you get fro enchanting or rep total is a same with other prof that is my opinion.
I think I missed where you suggested professions for each class. I'm looking to make a fire mage. Any suggestions?
what about the skinning/mining hammer or blacksmithing/mining hammer? was'nt that also in wotlk, from bs or engi?
A nice guide should be of accumulation of materials to bring engineering or jewelcrafting to lvl max...
I mean, how I can level up herbalism and mining in order to save materials for ultimate professions
You can buy ore now and smelt a new character to 290 mining just through smelting ore you bought as preparation
there were so many ppl on my server, ah prices just went right to vendor cost
boots from egi break but its very rare and if thy do you get soem safe parachute
Casters and warriors ! Prepare to be tailors and engineers!
I’m playing a Feral tank and just not sure what professions to pick, I’m leaning to Mining/BS but JC sounds really good. What would you recommend for a bear tank?
I always liked herb/alchemy for feral tank. Alchemy gives you indestructible Alchemist's Stone which is 75+ stam, dodge 50+, and 40% more healing from your endless healing potion(which has one min CD on the potion). Mixology will boost you flat health flask by effect and time so you get even more health for longer. also you can make yourself Indestructible Potion which gives 3500 armor for 2 mins on a 1 min CD.
Herbalism will gives you another nice heal with lifeblood.
What phase do you think the bop epic gems will come out?
Is it wrong to take enchanting and jewelerycrafting as a draenei pala tank? You said enchant ring buffs arent that good. But expect of stamina, there is spellpower too, which is good for palas. Would you agree, and which professions would you recommend for a draenei paladin?
Yeah I'd say you'd do well with enchanting and jewelcrafting! Honestly the bonuses aren't much different. If I had unlimited gold maybe I'd go either JC/BS or JC/Alchemy if I was a tank to max out my stats for PvE.
Gonna try to go Engineering/Tailoring with no farming toons. Gonna be tough.😬
Good luck man! You'll be a beast once it's maxed out!
great video. im a orc hunter with leather working and skinning. do i have to go JC/ENG if i want to do well in raids? Thanks!
Thanks! You don't have to, it's really just min maxing
I have always played a frost mage as my main but this time I might go fire for a change though I'm not 100% sure just yet, what professions would you all recommend for a frost or fire mage in WOTLK?
Engineering / tailoring imo
Not looking forward to the cost and time to get Engineering up on my druid. But it's going to be so worth it for pvp and raids 😩
What's so good about engi in pvp? Just the rocket boots?
do the mana injectors share the cooldown with the potions?
Just started out playing on Classic, leveling my first character (Warlock) and thinking about what profession to pick to make some gold and buff my character. Is Tailoring/Engineering combo good for it?
And also what about Jewelcrafting/Engi?
If it's your first character you might want to get a gathering profession to make gold. Definitely tailoring engineering is the best for making your character strong, but will require a lot of gold without mining
Can you please explain the benefits of Alchemy in arena? Can you use pots or flasks? Im confused, in google I found mixed answers. Thank you!
From memory, there was an infinite-use "flask" that added the equivalent of the mixology bonus and could be used in arenas. So if you had x stats from having a flask on, that alchemy special "flask" would give you x stats and is what you'd use whenever you're not actually flasking like in arenas.
So if I want to focus Arena as a Warlock (Likely Destro) with potential raiding (Maybe Demo) I want Engi + Something correct?
Seems like nobody knows if the engi devices can be used in arena or not
What do you think would be good for a rouge?
what professions for DK Tank? i thought about jewel and engineering
It should be noted that the plural of vellum is vella, not 'vellums'.
Best advice pick a profession that's going to benefit your characters power or that you will find fun. Doing it for gold making reasons doesn't make sense since everyone knows the gold making methods and will make them pretty much unprofitable for most players
Sad that blackamithig is difficult to level and just alright. I just love blacksmithing. But not sure if I will level it. Right now I have mining and skinning while leveling
You mentioned losing the gem slots if you drop BS but I assume it’s the same for the cloak enchant from tailoring? Otherwise getting one of those and dropping it for another prof would be op.
Yep it's the same for tailoring and all profession-specific bonuses - they are lost if you drop the profession
Will mining or herbalism make more money?
Important question: Does Runic mana injector bonus STACK with the alchemy trinket benifit? (Making a restoshaman with EnGi and Alc very lokely, but need to know do they stack.
They do not stack unfortunately :( great question though
@@Toyhouze Thanks for the quick reply! =)
I know this is late, but from what I remember, there isn't much issue with mana sustain as a healer in wrath, at least starting from Ulduar. We itemized for output rather than mana for the most part.
This was part of the reason for the mana nerf that came in Cata. In Wrath you never really thought about your mana - at most you knew which fights you needed to chug mana pots on cooldown and which fights allowed for other potions instead. Maybe without mana tide in the group - but you are talking about rshaman so that hypothetical is irrelevant.
Is it true that engineer mounts like the chopper can be used by everyone without being an engineer? So it would be different than the tailoring mounts.
If I remember correctly the answer is Yes. BUT only the engineer can buy the parts that can make it (in K3)
You say engi is best overall, but is it bis for arena? If all the tinkers are banned except the glove rockets, that doesn't seem too great
Everyone go engi and JC, who needs potions/elixirs/glyphs/enchants/BS LW Tailoring gear etc..
Shhh, your adding competition
I think I'm gonna go mining + jewelcrafting as a feral druid
Great choice
I ll go engi tailoring, cloak bonus seems very solid for me, 5 chars with tailoring, ez to lvl up, ez 4 days money with no effort.
No dailies and after 1 month every jwl will have all recipies, jwl will be dead in terms on gold making
Prospecting? Il will be worthy as it is in tbc, that means zero
So JC wont be worth getting in Wotlk? :/ I'm lock. Not sure what to pick.
I have a question: can you get BS for the 2 gem slots, and then drop it for another profession but still use the extra gem slots?
Nope you won't be able to use the extra slots if you drop BS
Profession picking Guide Short Version:
Are you a raider and a melee class / Hunter? Jewelcrafting + Engineering.
Are you a raider + Caster dps? Engineering + Tailoring
Potential exceptions to the above:
Feral cat Jewelcrafting + Blacksmithing for extra sockets for arp / hit caps in 3.3.
Are you a PvPer? Engineering + Tailoring / Jewelcrafting / Blacksmithing
Anything other than whats stated above? Pick whatever it doesnt matter.
You missed Transmute Titanium, which transmutes saronite into Titanium
Mine is enchanting and tailoring (combat rouge)
I was planning on LW/ENGI for my rogue but LW seems kinda underwhelming. Should I just go mining to supply engi?
Yeah I'd probably do that. LW is definitely pretty weak in Wrath. It's decent for tanks though.
@@Toyhouze thank you!
Does Hyperspeed Acceleration BoP or BoE ?? Just like Ring Enchant only applied for enchanter, or it's tradeable ?
BoP just like ring enchant.
@@Toyhouze thanks bb
Which gathering proffesion is better to make some gold on the side as you level up, herbalism or skinning? I plan on leveling with two gathering professions one being mining, then ditch the second gathering prof for Engineer until i max it and finally ditching mining after im stacked with the necessary mats to level JC.
Herbalism is always more contested when it comes to farming them. But i think skinning is generally less valuable since everyone wants potions and elixirs and flasks vs the skinning brnefits.
If you're going mining I'd recommend Skinning. It's easy to keep up with as you level, and you can only track herbs or mining at a time, so switching between the tracking is really inconvenient.
Skinning and Mining are EXTREMELY profitable in early 3.0, but gradually fall off as the expansion progresses. Mining retains more value than Skinning though, since ores always have value because of prospecting, and will become more valuable again after epic gems, whle skins/hides are only really used for crating gear.
Herbalism is probably less valuable than the two other at launch, but farming herbs is the by far most consistent moneymaker, since pots will always be in demand no matter which patch it is. Herbalism requires focues farming though, since most of the herbs will be considered useless. It's mainly the herbs used for crafting Haste pots and Wild Magic pots that will be expensive, while all the others will be really cheap. You won't make any money with herbalism by randomly picking the flowers you come across while leveling.
BRO WHATS THE SONG ON THE ALCHEMY INTRO?
are we going to be able to transfer toons from tbc classic to wolk classic?
Yes
I always went engineering in Wrath. Not because I wanted to be top tier PvE and PvP with nice enchants and ability to banker/auctioneer.
No I liked fireworks lol
Seems like bs and jc would work well together ?
Can u do the Self Heal from Herbalism in shadowform?
Yes that should work because shadow form prevents only holy spells from being cast
What’s the music that’s playing in the engineering part?
Tinkertown - World of warcraft soundtrack
Engineering all the way. Maybe we can rebuild the platform during the Lich King fight again and get banned for something that's Blizzards fault ;).
Mmmmm hyperspeed accelerator macrod with drain soul in arena. nom nom noms
Anyone know which if any of the engy benefits you can use in arenas?? I remember rocket boots for sure are banned, I would ASSUME the belt is banned, I'm thinking the gloves might work but that also could be me misremembering it as goblin racial from Cata.
Gloves definitely work, everything else i don't think so
Yeah I need to know this too, everyone saying engi is the best but if they don't even work in arena then I'm not sure
@@davidzabriskie7137 pretty sure it's just gloves after messing on warmane. 2k damage on a pretty short cd is quite a nice bit of burst off gcd with early wrath health levels.
@@posthardcoresinger so engi is good for phase 1 but useless after a couple seasons? =/
Bs and engi can be a good choice for a warrior? I prefer pvp. Thanks
Yeah great choices!
