Mark Craney played this in 1979. The man was blessed with a supernatural talent. He had it all. groove, chops, class, passion. He was not like us, maybe that's why in 2013,34 years after this was played and 8 years after his passing I watch him everyday.he is always in my thoughts. RIP Mr. Craney.
I have to close my eyes listening to this in hopes when I open them the shit storm the world is today will be replaced by the way it was back then. The world wasn't perfect back then but NO ONE thought we could fall so far in 40 or so years. I miss complex music played by supremely talented musicians. Mark Craney is tearing it up!!!🥁
I only wish the video editor would've synced up the right pieces of video with the audio. Everything Mark did, I wanted to see, but alas no. Poor editing drum-wise. But thanks for posting... I still enjoyed it. R.I.P. Mark.
@@EIStudent Not sure which licks you're referring to, but mostly everything he did was single-stroke rolls, and that's the way I learned it when I heard it...if you're talking about the blistering triplets with the end flam on the snare, it's not actually a flam, it's the end of the last triplet as you would normally play it. It's just lightning fast. He starts with an anticipated kick first, then finishes the first triplet on the toms; the last two trips are kick and snare. Then, if this makes sense to you, he puts them in a triplet phrasing over an 8-count measure! Ya...he was clearly a genius. Then breaks out of THAT with 3-stroke, 32nd-note rolls down the toms!!! Frickin' BRILLIANT.
When Mark died other important "colleagues" said about him: Phil Collins - "Brother to Brother - one of the best drum performace" and Vinnie Colaiuta - "Mark has opened the "road" to us-durmmers". Great Mark! For me the Mozart of drums! Thank you Mark! Rest in peace.
Some of the best first generation progressive/fusion recorded. Everything was top notch; writing, arrangements, Gino's superlative vocals, and musicianship that always had just the right balance of chops and musicality. Gino's powerful presence and dramatic delivery brought it all home with an energy and charm that was his alone. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Jon, right on my friend! But walking the over production line. I think his manager, if he had one, fancied him another Tom Jones. BUT highly romantic and dramatic music pairs well with high production. That was the package back then.

Nothing really like this today. Truly live. No dubbed tracks. No Autotune. Complex and sophisticated music that's also beautiful. I saw them during this era. The show started...then they blew everyone away.
Saw Gino with this Tour in Detroit at Cobo Hall. I saw Mark Craney playing the drums from the third row. I've never seen anything like him since. A left handed drummer who looked like and sounded like perpetual motioin. RIP Great One.
Mark Craney is who brought me here. I have always kind of written Gino Vannelli off as some goofy yacht rock stuff but this is some blistering fusion right here! I'm sure Vannelli has played with some of the best musicians in the business but i doubt he's had a better drummer than Craney.
Back in high school(1979-80)Mark Craney was like a drum-god to me and my drummer friend. He had a way of playing just the right thing at the right time. So sad that he's gone.
We probably knew each other back then 👍 but probably not, now that i read your reply again. I went to Washington High (72). Mark went to Lincoln and graduated a year earlier than I, i think But back then, me and my friends were live music fanatics and hit every bar or venue that our local bands played. Mark was a fixture at most. I remember him playing at Charlie's Pizza and the Stockman's Bar. He just kept getting better and better! I also played drums.
My brother Markham Johnson and Mark Craney spent many days on dialysis together. Last time I saw Mark Craney was at my brothers funeral. There jamming together just like old times I'm sure. Notice Craney is left handed...they used to set up both drum kits and it was like mirror vision. They are reliving those times I'm sure of it. God Bless.
Back in the late 70's, my brother and I went to every one of Gino's concerts held in Kansas City. Now, over 30 years later I have the same appreciation for the music, a huge admiration for the musicians but can't hardly watch Gino. I've listened to many top-notch drummers including Buddy Rich but don't ever recall hearing him do some of the things Mark Craney does. Crazy!
Daryl Stuermer owned what's now the current Uncle Bob's Music in West Allis, Wis. I remember him and his brother Dewayne from the early 70's in Milwaukee.
I saw Gino on this tour at THEE Los Angeles Fabulous Forum. It was amazing! Also saw Mark Craney with Jethro Tull at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Excellent time for live music!!
Probably the very best live performance ever to be captured on video. All top tier musicians doing what comes natural with the superb Gino as front man💋 BELLISIMO❤️
Gino opened facing him because he started musically as a drummer. He loved the opening drum beats. He’s had many great drummers in his bands. He often turned around to them when he liked the drumming.
Mark Craney...Simply unbelievable. Was fortunate enough to take a lesson with him at his house in LA. I remember him walking into the lesson with a cane. He was not well at that point. A great dude who didn’t let the state of his health stop him from teaching. It was a one-off and so long ago that I sadly don’t even remember what we worked on exactly. Great guy and one of the greatest. Can only imagine where his career would have taken him. R.I.P Mark Craney.
I saw this concert at the now-gone Omni in Atlanta. Gino was touring for the Brother To Brother album. His sound guys had the place totally dialed in... fantastic PA. And the show was unforgettable. Back in the late 70s, there were no big screens and close-up live video... so the performers were further away, and Gino's gyrations didn't seem nearly as over-the-top as they do in this video. Too bad no one put a camera on Mark Craney here, the drum work is such a big part of this song.
Those were the days! Mark Craney R.I.P. Daryl Steurmer, the guitarist, ended up with Genesis. Mark and Daryl came from Jean Luc Ponty's band and played on Ponty's Imaginary Voyage.
@krenzcar88 According to Mark Craney himself (check his website) he is a right -handed drummer who plays a left -handed drum set because his father set up his first drum set backwards. Peace
I was surprised to learn that Mark Craney was a self taught drummer! I am self taught as most of my drummer friends are, but to be a pro level session player that he was really blows me away. Did he teach himself to read music too I wonder?
Im not sure if he could read music, but I'm sure he understood the time signature breakdown and the time value of different notes within a signature. I do know he played alot in various high school bands and practised a whole lot more back then. He knew what he wanted and went for it, despite the odds. He was a humble man. God bless him.
what a song!still listening to it at least once a week .and mark craney at his best on stage .however did someone notice that he simplified the main groove on the charley, maybe to give more power live.
Just a very thrilling experience to be able to look and listen to this greatest version from the 70s! Gino and Joe at their prime! Thousand and one thanks!
