For sure, that album did deserve a Grammy for album of the year, or at least for best engineering. It is an extraordinary recording, maybe the best from Gino Vannelli so far. The feat it got was Best Vocal Performance for "I just wanna stop", but it lost to... "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow 😒 just incredible.
As a Sound Engineer I was the one setting thje drums for recording. That stomp sound without resonance was my trademark. Kick drum had a 25 pounds iron weight on top on sound blankets resting on the drum itself! It sounded like you were hitting it with a hammer! Gino's Drummer is one of the best I have heard, Solid! Not missing a single beat!

"A" in Craney is short sound BTW. I was in high school with him. When he became diabetic his dad, a leftie, bought him a drum kit and set them up backwards. It really made for some unusual rhythm patterns but when Cream came out with Wheels of Fire, he begged a second bass drum. He started doing stuff that I don't think anyone had thought of before. He'd be on stage with a local band called Rushmore and we'd hear this amazing firecracker stuff between his four extremities that was twice as fast and complex as he appeared to be moving. We'd gasp an and exclaim "How did. he do that?!" He was eighteen at the time.
Actually I believe Mark had two kidney transplants and when he died he was struggling with pneumonia and complications from diabetes. Either way, we lost one of the most spectacularly talented drummers of all time imo. By all accounts he was a fantastic person, a truly kind and good man. I feel cheated when I think of what he could have created had he been here longer and how much we all could've enjoyed it. A rare, down to earth human being and a one of a kind, other worldly drummer and musician, he is very missed. Trying to make that connection, Mark! Rock on!

I went to a drum clinic featuring Casey Scheuerell in the early 80s. He said it took three days just to mic the drums for the “Pauper In Paradise” album.
I supplied Mark Craney with Paiste and Rogers Drums every time he was in London! Brother to Brother is his masterwork, totally awesome drumming perfect for such a seminal recording production!

Might as well chime in. Gino, Joe, Mark etc. played my high school St. Pius X on Papineau street Montreal. Nicest band members you"d want to meet. Super pro and super serious musicians. They made everything look so sync. They practiced day and night. You could hear them practice on St. Michael street day in day out. There were so many styles of music in Montreal at that time. Frank Marino (Hendrix copy), Zep, Tull, and so many more. Montreal attracts many musicians from all over the world. It's a melting pot for fusion, jazz, rock, folk. Ciao.

Mark Craney was a monster on the drums. He did one album and tour with Jethro Tull (the album 'A' and their tour for that album), and he absolutely killed it! My favorite Tull drummer for sure. It's a shame that they didn't continue with him, but that may have been due to health problems he had. But for that one album and tour he really showed how great he was! His work with Gino Vanelli was outstanding as well.

Great video & lesson. I'm and old Gino fan from the 70's and attended many concerts over the years. I'm still drumming to most of his songs. I wish I was good enough to play Brother to Brother, Way out of my league. Gino has always had amazing drummers in his band, going back to his original drummer the amazing Gram Lear., he was so fast it almost sounded like a wav file when he would go around the set, hard to explain. If you have not seen Gino's newer live version I think in Vegas of B to B, Check it out. Awesome new arrangement, The drummer kills it with mix of Jazz & fusion I guess would be the right term. Thanks so much for this Jared - brings back Brother to Brother memories from college. A friend of mine in college played bass for a good college band and his brother played drums. The bass player is still playing professionally today 40 years later. He and his drummer brother were up for the challenge but both said it was the hardest thing they ever played.

Just imagine, I was in 1978, just bought the Brother to Brother album, put it on the turntable and let it play. One song after the other. Started on my bed and finished on the floor, all songs on the album are incredible. I have been playing these songs for 45 years and still find them challenging and sooooo much fun to play. This album is the root of my playing style.

Saw him with JLP in New Orleans… wondered about that hi hat…. Thought he must be left handed but he didn’t seem to be….really loved New Country….. the way he turns the beat around and back… spent a year working on it…. Since you seem to be a fan of Mark Craney maybe you could do a video on that song…. DUDE. This was great, first. I’ve had this 8 track since it released. Now cd of course but what a drummers album huh? Your run at 14:55 ? Terrific !! I had 4th row tix in 78 and he cancelled. Never had another opportunity. I don’t think that energy is there anymore but I’m sure musically it would still be great, but I’ve seen clips where he’s even changed 4/4 to 3/4, etc. yuk. His songs but yuk. You did Superb and I love “talking” drums 24/7.
Mark Craney, a master gone waaay too soon. Life has its crazy ways sometimes. He also played with Jean-Luc Ponty and Jethro Tull but what he provided on Brother To Brother is from outer space. Check out Enzo Todesco's take, he played wth Gino in the early 90's (Live in Montreal). Sadly he passed away too at a young age...
Regarding the tightness of the drum and cymbal sounds: I read at the time that for the recording Craney used 20" bass drums with 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 toms - very punchy sizings. He also played Paiste cymbals, which were of B8 bronze. This alloy lacks the tin quantity (only 8%) found in typical Zildjian and Sabian cymbals, which are B20 bronze (20% tin, 80% copper). Not only does this make them less durable, it makes them less musical and limits the sustain, thus 'tightening' the tonal spectrum. Also, Craney - whose playing I love - had a concept that was quite tight, something he possibly got from playing with Jean Luc Ponty prior to Vannelli. And Vannelli, himself a drummer (and multi-talent) has always had a very definite vision of how he wants everything to sound. I have friends who played in his band in the 90s. They said it was a phenomenal gig, though Gino was constantly changing and rearranging tunes, sometimes on a daily basis when touring. Vinnie Colaiuta came after Craney and did the 'Nightwalker' album. He said it was the toughest audition he'd ever done. Thank you for the breakdown. But also for the play-through at the end. I have a book of notation for the album (by someone in France). Your video will help me better understand the notation.

Well Gino alway had some great players with him , but Mark is one of my favorite drummers o f all time. I think he fit Gino's sound the best for that time. Gino, being a dru mmer his self understood drums, so he used the crap out of his drummers.

In a recent interview, Gino said that he was inspired by Steve Gadd's solo on Aja, and wanted a drum solo like that on this song.
Mark Cranney is one of the most incredible drummers I ever heard. He played with Gino and Jethro Tull, both world class acts as was Mark. Phenomenal!

Thanks so much for this Jared - brings back Brother to Brother memories from college. A friend of mine in college played bass for a good college band and his brother played drums. The bass player is still playing professionally today 40 years later. He and his drummer brother were up for the challenge but both said it was the hardest thing they ever played.

Thanks for the lesson brother to brother being my favorite favorite song by anybody else of course my own music is my favorite music but brother to brother the recording was just insane that he did there's so many cover bands on RUclips that there's like 10 bands 12 bands that have done you know done their own remake of brother brother as you know but thanks so much for the drum instruction helped me a lot. Yeah Gina was a drummer as you know and his early years that's why he's always had some of the baddest drummers ever played on his music I'm more of a bass player guitar player I do synth programming drum programming I admired drummers more than any other musician it's amazing how drummers do what they do God bless you brother

Just imagine, I was in 1978, just bought the Brother to Brother album, put it on the turntable and let it play.
One song after the other. Started on my bed and finished on the floor, all songs on the album are incredible.
I have been playing these songs for 45 years and still find them challenging and sooooo much fun to play.
This album is the root of my playing style.

right on man, So many don't even know of this kid, I was all over this kid playing as a youngster myself, and consider him and D wekle the two finest drummers of our time. in Mark being so unknown by drummers and that is G's brother on Guita is it not,? Mark’s hands were so stinking fast, it’s incredibly hard to execute what he is playing with that touch and that speed. As well, his creativity and the uniqueness of his parts reminds me of someone who was a contemporary of his at that time, Steve Gadd

Saw him with JLP in New Orleans… wondered about that hi hat…. Thought he must be left handed but he didn’t seem to be….really loved New Country….. the way he turns the beat around and back… spent a year working on it…. Since you seem to be a fan of Mark Craney maybe you could do a video on that song…. DUDE. This was great, first. I’ve had this 8 track since it released. Now cd of course but what a drummers album huh? Your run at 14:55 ? Terrific !! I had 4th row tix in 78 and he cancelled. Never had another opportunity. I don’t think that energy is there anymore but I’m sure musically it would still be great, but I’ve seen clips where he’s even changed 4/4 to 3/4, etc. yuk. His songs but yuk. You did Superb and I love “talking” drums 24/7.

Mark Craney, a master gone waaay too soon. Life has its crazy ways sometimes. He also played with Jean-Luc Ponty and Jethro Tull but what he provided on Brother To Brother is from outer space.
Check out Enzo Todesco's take, he played wth Gino in the early 90's (Live in Montreal). Sadly he passed away too at a young age...
Regarding the tightness of the drum and cymbal sounds: I read at the time that for the recording Craney used 20" bass drums with 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 toms - very punchy sizings. He also played Paiste cymbals, which were of B8 bronze. This alloy lacks the tin quantity (only 8%) found in typical Zildjian and Sabian cymbals, which are B20 bronze (20% tin, 80% copper). Not only does this make them less durable, it makes them less musical and limits the sustain, thus 'tightening' the tonal spectrum. Also, Craney - whose playing I love - had a concept that was quite tight, something he possibly got from playing with Jean Luc Ponty prior to Vannelli. And Vannelli, himself a drummer (and multi-talent) has always had a very definite vision of how he wants everything to sound. I have friends who played in his band in the 90s. They said it was a phenomenal gig, though Gino was constantly changing and rearranging tunes, sometimes on a daily basis when touring. Vinnie Colaiuta came after Craney and did the 'Nightwalker' album. He said it was the toughest audition he'd ever done.

I can switch around and play left handed verse right which I am but man this level playing backward basically is mind blowing! He just went up even further on the amazing scale!

It’s a brand called heartbeat. They are based out of Canada. For being more affordable symbols they are still really good quality. Just Google Heartbeat Percussion and you can find them.

Well Gino alway had some great players with him , but Mark is one of my favorite drummers o f all time. I think he fit Gino's sound the best for that time. Gino, being a dru mmer his self understood drums, so he used the crap out of his drummers.
