Gino Vannelli - The story behind People Gotta Move

- To prove to his high school girl friend that he could write a hit song overnight, Gino Vannelli came up with People Gotta Move.
He remembers, playing his Aria nylon string guitar, screaming out to her “Can’t you just hear the brass?!” when he got to the first chorus.
But the girl, alas, only could manage to produce a minimal smile. However, a few years later, Herb Alpert from A&M Records believed in its hit potential and signed Gino.
Don Cornelius invited Gino to perform People Gotta Move on national tv show Soul Train and Stevie Wonder choose him as the opening act for his American tour.
This mini documentary is a production of Dutch national television company NTR for the highly rewarded Top 2000 a Go Go tv show.

God bless Herb albert for giving gino tje chance to audience. Gino otherwise we were nevera be able to listen GIno's músic
Like a fine wine, Gino has gotten better with age....confident, well-versed in so many types of music and a genuinely nice guy from all I've seen.............wonderful entertainer.
He's the reason I stayed in Montreal when life was lowdown and I got to meet some of his friends and cousins even played with Tony, Gino's conga player from People gotta move period and Rick Vanelli his cousin was the bassist for a band I had back then
Tony Golia
Gino , always classy, smart and always has the best studio musicians
Superb singer musician and writer,he deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
My maiiiin man! This guy has one of the biggest voices in the biz, yet he's nowhere near superstar status in his career.
I got hip to him in 1976 via the, 'Pauper In Paradise' album...this man can sing.
Rock & Roll Hall ? Not really, i love Gino.
Long time AGO
Gino's orchestrated arrangements were the best of any artist of that Era can hold even now. He is the most underrated musician of all time
I love Gino
You've got to follow your heart because that's where your soul is.
Ok I’ll admit it.....I have a Bromance for Gino! Actually I just have a very high regard for Gino’s talents....he’s totally & completely under appreciated!!!!
He sure isn't unappreciated by ME ❤
I know what you're saying, but I think he's sometimes too hip for the room. He has millions of fans all over the world, fought hard to do the music that was uniquely his, and sings as great as he does because he was very smart about taking care of himself!
Beautiful man !
Met Gino in new Orleans.he is so amazing.very sweet and he stopped to take pics.he was so humble.I especially remember how gorgeous he is in person!!!!
An absolute Giant
We just saw Gino in New Orleans last night, and that man has PIPES! His voice is just as pure as it was 40 years ago. Amazing concert that I will never forget.
That man has a lot more than just "pipes;" he's got charisma, imposing presence AND he's a Gemini. That sort of says it all.
@@rosiekelly8388 He is some kind of wonderful, isn't he??!!
@@csheets40 Gino is a true Gemini AND because he's also Italian, he's even MORE
@@rosiekelly8388 ¹
@@rosiekelly8388 what's up with Geminis? I'm one of them. Tell me what I should know. :)
Love that voice.
Soul Train is where I fell for that Sexy Italian singer and I am still hooked
Really?
@@pangeaproxima9446 Why wouldn't I be?
@@SnarkierThan-U-R I agree.
Isn't he adorable?
He is canadian!
GINO, WHO HAD THE BIGG AFRO BACK IN THA DAY----IS MY MY MAAAAAN... BECAUSE HE WROTE TWO OF THE BADDESST, CLASSIC AND TIMELESS SLOW JAMS OF ALL TIMES: " I JUST WANNA STOP" AND "LIVIN' INSIDE MYSELF!!!".... AND HE WAS INVITED ON SOUUUUUL TRAIN!! HE IS A LEGEND!!
One of the BADDEST MEN on the planet. Love that style!🔥🔥🔥
Off white, polka dot or plaid ... this man was born with greatness in his hot blood!
Another classic hit from 1974
WOW! Still can't wait to see him......
I was a kid when this came out, they used to blast it at the local Roller Rink, I just knew this was SOOOOO much better than the other music that was being played ..being brought up on this kind of stuff made me a better musician myself ..Thanks Gino
The first artist whose music I couldn't get enough of. This man is an all-time great.
✨✨✨
Much respect Gino,
One of my all time fav's one of my good friends gifted me his album for my 48th Birthday a few years back .
A very cool story, I always liked that song from 1974, when I graduated from high school. The "Soul Train" segment was priceless! :)
"Off-white" Ha! And they played LIVE on Soul Train? How cool.
Xyero Forsyte I don't believe that was live at all.
You may be right, but at the very least they re-recorded the song so that it would only have the instrumentation they were pantomiming with, because that audio version is not from the album or single.
Italians definitely off-white
...I'm glad that Gino's CLASSIC appearance on "Soul Train" was mentioned, because although he wasn't the 'first' white Artist ("Tubular Bells" instrumentalist Mike Oldfield was), Gino WAS the first to introduce his love for Soul, opening the doors for Bowie, Elton, Go West, Sheena, etc.
I just HAVE to ask....what kind of stupid Trolls would give a thumbs down to this????
What an amazing artist.
There are many caucasean people who are great R& B singers!
Enjoyed my time with Gino a few years back working on my craft. Took many notes and pointers. True genius.
Amazing story ❤️ Gino is forever my favorite
Gino rocks. Great story...and (apparently) a class act. Nice. :)
I was familiar with his music but have never seen him physically until about a week ago. I have never in my life seen such a gorgeous, sexy, fine looking man!
Awesome musician
What a great interview. Gino on SOUL TRAIN 🚂 Priceless. The HAIR so only Gino ( priceless) very a true Prince . Eyes penetrating
Perfect match to his 🎵🎶 musiQ. LOVE Herb Alpert . Fell in love with Gino in Brother To Brother ❤️
GINO THE BEST OF THE BEST
I’ve seen Gino in concert 3x. First time was in the late 80s in Birmingham AL. Second time was many years later in 2010 in Seattle WA. Third was in Clearwater FL. I’ve got every album and have been a fan from the moment I heard his first song.
! have been a fan from the moment I heard the song: "I Just Wanna Stop."
Great vintage video clips and behind-the-scenes stories!! Rock on, Gino!
I’ve been in love with this man’s music (or maybe this music man) since I first heard him in 1976.
Je suis québécois comme Gino et nous l adorons 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I LOVE GINO VANELLI!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Love You Gino!!!
Wow! Never..knew he was on SOUL TRAIN!
wow...look at Joe havin a Blast ! 2023 now saw Gino in 2013 loved it!
Pinnacle of my career would be to mix a Gino Tour. I know those songs in my sleep.
Jeff Waluch Me as well. I have every album. Gino rocks.
Jeff Waluch You need to ask Ross.
What a coo; story, was 17 with wheels when this came out, lot of good memeries.
The words, the music, the captivating presence send only ONE message and that message is pure male SENSUALITY. Gino is as seductive as his lyrics and music. He truly IS a Gemini.
@@kennethrussell1158 Didn't know you would need a translator. What was it about my comment that you didn't understand?
Couldn’t agree more!
Movie material (short), really, just on this story alone. Happy 150 CAnada! I'm waiting for the the Gino and Joe Vannelli Musical here in Toronto

like daryll hall,loggins,rundgren...Gino still got the pipes.
wouldn’t it be great if they got together ❤️
Along with his brother Gino was destined to be a big musician
Great album, used to play as loud as my neighbors would allow.
Good on you for not letting anyone deter you from your dreams and life's purpose. So many people allow themselves to be deflected from pursuing their dreams and then have regrets later on. Bravo! ❤
you do a great interview!
When I saw Gino on Soul Train I thought he was the coolest white dude in the world. If you down with Don Cornelius, you had to have soul and Mr. Vanelli proved that even white people can have "The Vibe." We were diggin' him.
I played Gino at high school parties in 1981...all the girls thought I was the best for introducing them to the man Gino
The memories I still have to this day are magical in their own right......Thanks Gino....
My goodness, what a story!
It's those big-hair, off-white days circa 1977 when I discovered you!
I have always, always love his music. When I was young I would have dated him he was FINE!!!! Music with Flavor!
222...LIKED Met Gino...for the "Meet n Greet"....with photo time. Well worth it, the long waiting, was priceless. So love ALL His music...had to grow Hair longer, and of course opened shirt and tight body sleeved shirts as well. In Choir class...individualism was king...was fun as well. Trying to hit His notes was a challenge.
A International Treasure!
Way underappreciated!
One of my favorite artists
GREAT GREAT share...love Gino and his sound
Very good !
U are the Best... U are so... mi life.. 🌹
Legend 🇮🇹🇨🇦🍁🎼🎵🎶
Does he EVER age? He's always so handsome, I LOVE the Han Soloesque accessories. Any heckler, who says, "can't accessorize", was NOT talking about Gino.
Gaaf..ik ben dol op gino..giga muzikant...treedt hij nog op in 2018
My most prised Gino vinyl is a mint copy of Powerful People (Original Master Recording) has only been played twice and is also far superior sound to the CD I have or any other version... including the original 1974, and people gotta move... first track on side 1... YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
.
Great post!
We only know great musicians through their music...This post takes a step in the right direction...we wonder what questions we would ask if we could meet Face-toFace!!!
I would ask Gino, voulez vous couche avec moi c'est soir?
So Anna Marie... any regrets?!?!? And your Papa?!?!? Hmmmm...?!?!? Of course we ALL have them. But WOW!!! I would consider THIS the Epic Mother Lode of ALL regrets. 💕😔💕
I was familiar GV in high school ('76-'79), but I've never heard of this song.
Gino,eres genial .🤩🥰🥰
kei bedankt John *Houdoe uit Christchurch*
KEEP..ON..TRUCKING
Gino graciously gives his sheet music away for free on his website in .pdf form.
The only 2 songs I knew by him were "i just wanna stop" and "Living inside myself".
Actually, I remember the gorl that Gino is referring to. I was in the Family kitchen with them right around the time that Crazy Life was released. As a matter of fact, I can clearly remember what was playing on a small 19 inch television that sat on a tv stand in the kitchen. The Great White Hope. How ironic! Wow! Where has the time gone?
Imagine what that girlfriend feels about what happened!!...Also hard to believe that record companies wouldn't sign him;. For one thing, he was so gorgeous that you'd think they wanted that image, alone.
I now wonder what Anne-Marie thought when she heard the song on all Pop Radios :))))
😎
I wonder if that Girlfriend is the subject in his song 'Keep On Walking"?
✌
