The argument is dumb insofar that all 3 are obviously very talented. I don't think there are many fans that would disagree with that. But to say the argument only stems from the fans individual dedication to the singers is just wrong. Everybody that says that Anette with her rock/pop voice fits the Nightwish style is just crazy. Or deaf. So of course she is disregarded mostly, and the time from 2007-2012 is rightfully called the dark ages of the band. I mean, the band was unable to perform 50% of their songs because she could not sing them! Any argument over who is better between Floor and Tarja is very dumb tho, so there I am in agreement again.

Talking about the image, and the charisma:
      Tarja: The Ice Queen,
      Floor: The Valkyrie Goddess,

Personally my preference on the singers has to do with how I feel their style fits a particular song. I prefer Tarja's version of Planet Hell, Anette's version of Amaranth, and Floor's version of Ghost Love Score. It's all just a case-by-case basis because each singer has their strengths.
I think it's easy to get accustomed to a particular singer's style if you only listen to their versions, and then if you hear a different singer the differences in their style sound 'wrong'. From there it's easy to assume that it's because that singer is worse, not seeing that those differences can actually be strengths.

only real "issue" with Anette is she did struggle with various Tarja era songs... and I don't think she felt free enough to change up the style, in the way Floor has, where she belts a lot more than Tarja did. I think had she changed them up more to suit her own style and voice, it'd been better, but the haters would hate, regardless. Anette is a damn good singer, though, and the 2 album she did I love.

Anette is a great singer but I personally don't think she ever had the range to really be great for nightwish, however in the range she does have she is absolutely great, which is why the two albums she did were great although I personally for example think Floor handled the Poet and the Pendulum better (although Annette didn't sing it badly or anything) as imo it doesn't quite fit Anette's style. However more "folky" songs like the crow, the owl and the dove, ghost river and scaretale she absolutely rocked because those were perfect for her style.

Good Job Tank. I really appreciated what you said.
If there is one thing that bothers me the most is the sentence that many nostalgic Nightwish fans say : Nightwish without Tarja is done. As much as I love Tarja ( and I do love her very much... I mean how can you not love her ? )Nightwish is alive and kicking no matter who is the singer because Nightwish is a Tuomas' creation. Nightwish will live as long as Tuomas wishes. I have been a Nightwish fan for 18 years now and I remember well how I felt when I read the news that Tuomas had fired Tarja... How can I listen to new material without Tarja? I asked to myself. Then ' Dark Passion Play ' came out and I was mesmerized by the quality of the songs and the beauty of Anette's singing. I consider it that album a true masterpiece. You can like it or not but Tuomas needed to explore new musical landscapes no matter who was the singer. As you can see with the song ' The Poet and The Pendulum ' firing Tarja was one of the most difficult decision that Tuomas took in his own life but after this painful separtion he probably realized that he could even more easily explore new musical ideas and directions without her and with a new singer. And that's exactly what he did and especially what he did with the lastest album Human Nature. Tuomas is an artist and how can we fool ourselves in believing and hoping that he would have done the same album all over again during the span of 23 years ? Can we all peacefully agree on the fact we are extremely lucky to love a band that has had , no matter who the singer was , 9 very very good diversified albums ? Can we peacefully agree on the fact that we are extremely lucky to love a band that has had two of the most talented and skilled singers of all times in Tarja and Floor and a very very good one in Anette ?

I'm gonna do my very own "Tank note" for you, Tank. In the rehearsal version, in the Tuomas' keyboard solo, he played a little bit of two songs; one was "Stargazers", and the other was "Gethsemane", both songs from the album "Oceanborn". There's a very old live recording of "Gethsemane" with Tarja, and the "Decades" concert has Floor singing it. And "Stargazers" live at Tampere is also available. So... reacting to any of those songs may be a good option for next week.

      @jonathanday6692 2 года назад +1

Storytime, as happened with Elvenpath, became an utterly different song between the original and Floor's version - despite identical music and lyrics. In the case of Storytime, Anette's version has a sinister and menacing feel to it, whereas Floor's is highly optimistic. Neither is better. Anette's version was perfect for that album and video, I wouldn't change it for the world. (Tarja's Elvenpath also has a very menacing style which suits the underlying myths superbly, Floor's Elvenpath suits the modern tales.)
The interpretation is absolutely perfect for the context. Where the context hasn't changed (such as on Planet Hell), singers have stuck to very similar styles. I raise my drinking horn (filled with mead, naturally) in salute to singers who really understand storytelling and nuance in a way that very, very few singers do.
(There are many singers I like, many of them superb, but I would say these three have mastered nuance and storytelling to a degree you simply don't see elsewhere.)

@@honestbenny I think DPP was a hit because the world was fixed on Nightwish for a brief moment after the Tarja-drama, making people curious to find out what this new singer, i.e. Anette will sound and bring to the table. In addition, Dark Passion Play was the most expensive album produced in Finland's history, I hear 700 000€, not to mention all the adds they must have bought to ensure revenue after such a big bill.
Imaginaerum, in my humble personal opinion, a much better album. But by then, the hype and drama had died out, and those that were not sold on Anette after hearing Dark Passion Play threw in the towel - hence the much lower album sales. A huge loss for them though, as Anette's vocal melodies and techniques made more sense with Imaginaerum.

Maybe Sleeping Sun with Tarja (End of an Era) next? That's like the quintessential Tarja song even though Floor's version of it is gorgeous as well. I don't think you've done a Nightwish ballad yet and this is one of their most popular songs.

But not from End of an Era! There she sings the rearranged version of Sleeping Sun. I always ask people do they like the original or rearranged version better, and you know, almost everyone who knows enough to reply, prefers the original version. The difference is in singing style: in the original you find more vibrato and legato. Also of course, End of an Era = flu concert. Not good Tarja's vocals and at worst really suffering vocals.

  • @MissIssay
    @MissIssay 3 года назад +13

Anette brought such a different sound to the band... as these things happened, the fanbase was first rocked by the announcement of parting ways with Tarja (and both open letters, and very ugly discussions online), then a lengthy period of uncertainty with added rumors of the band being over and done, and then by having a new singer who sounded like the exact opposite of Tarja's. I'm not surprised that there are people who didn't like her; and that she's not usually even considered in the discussions about who is the better female singer. But the two albums Tuomas was able to write because of the sound and style she brought to the table are still one of the best - and in the long run, isn't that what really counts?
Great reaction but then again, your reactions are always great so do I even have to say it.

Planet Hell? Now that's a song I haven't heard in a long time. I remember when I first got into Nightwish, just as End of an Era released (I blame my dad for showing me them too late to expirience the Tarja stuff) and this song blew me away. Really stoked for this reaction!
Edit: yup, it's just as good as I remember it. And fuck yeah for doing the Anette version, I love her vocals! As i said earlier, I just got into Nightwish after Tarja left so the first record from the I got invested in was Dark Passion Play. With that in mind, you should check out "Bye Bye Beautiful". Straight up banger with Anette on vocals and a little surprise which I will explain when you're doing the song. But you should do the official music video to see that surprise ;) and the song kinda relates to Poet and the Pendulum, because it's basically a song about Tarja. This may give a little more context

I'm super happy that you did Planet Hell and gave Jukka much well deserved love too (I was hoping you would catch him switching drumsticks mid-drumming, but it's hard if you don't know it beforehand). He often switches up the tempo and uses the double base in a clever way in a lot of songs which makes the effect even better. I also love Toumas throwback on his solo in the studio version to the fans of the "Oceanborns" album with "Stargazers" and "Gethsemane".
In general, most reactors seem to react mostly to Floor, then they go to "Phantom of the Opera" to get a song from Tarja (and occasionally one more from "End of an Era"), but hardly noone dives deeper into their earlier stuff. You have already done some not-so-common stuff, with Planet Hell being one of those, but I would love to see you be the one who really goes back in time and explore more of their earlier material, mostly from 2001 with "From wishes to eternity". They really had a different sound there, much more fantasy-themed without the heavy guitar that mostly did it entrance on "Once" (and to some part "Century Child"), but with a lot of really beautiful solos.
Here's quite a list of suggestions, but they are all gold in my eyes:
    * Ever Dream from End of an Era - My alltime favourite song, the song is just perfection (and the crescendo....!).
    * She is my sin from Wishes to Eternity - The song that made me love Nightwish, lots of energy and a great example of their "Wishmaster" sound.
    * Bless the Child from End of an Era - This one flies under the radar, but I remember Toumas saying back in the day that this was the most difficult song to play live. Also, Jukka goes full out on the showmanship/crowd interaction which he was known for.
    * The Kinslayer from WIshes to Eternity - Same as "She is my Sin", these two were the opening songs, you can't go wrong with a concert after that.
    * Dead boy's Poem fron Wishes to Eternity - A musical masterpiece and one of their first "epic" songs.
    * Fantasmic from Wishes to Eternity - A 3-part epic song. They played the third part live which is the most intense part, Toumas abandons his keyboards to be able to headbang full on.
    * Beauty and the Beast from Wishes to Eternity - We need some appreciation for a song from "Angels falls first", along with Tony Kakko as guest singer.
    * Sleeping Sun from End of an Era - This is THE Tarja song. Nuff said.
Done? Not really. Here are some suggestions that are realy out there/almost forgotten, but you will find pure gold.
    * Swanheart from Wishes to Eternity - I have never seen anyone talk about it/suggest it, but if you like Sleeping Sun you should love this. It's just beautiful! I suggest listening to their Hans Zimmer cover of "Crimson Tide/Deep blue sea" leading into it. Musical perfection!
    * Walking in the air from Wishes to Eternity - I love that they made a cover of the song from "The Snowman" and also played it live.
And I will finish off with a suggestion that I think is best for you to check out in private. From "End of an Era", check out "Stone People" directly followed by "Creek Mary's Blood". I found out only recently (late to the ball I guess?) that there were some controversies around the guest artist John Two-Hawks, so you might not want to cover that in a video, but the perfomance is really worth watching, and "Creek Mary's Blood" was the "epic song" from "Once".
Ok, this became something. But I'm happy for every not-so-common reaction that you do and if you do anything "From Wishes to Eternity", I will be super happy. Keep up the great work Tank, I'm loving it!

I think Annette suffered from trying to follow Tarja. Her main "crime" was not being Tarja at a time when that was all Nightwish fans wanted. I will say she's my least favourite of the three singers (though still a very good one) but in my opinion the albums they made with Annette are the bands best work.
What makes Floor such a great fit is that she can sing any of the songs written for Tarja, and any of the songs written for Annette. I don't think either Tarja or Annette could sing the entire Nightwish library the way Floor can. Sadly I think the albums the band has made with her as singer have been their most forgettable. Funny really, that they did their best work with the "worst" singer and their worst work with the best singer.

Interesting, Endless forms is my favourite album out of all of them but I also got into them when that album was their newest one so perhaps that does have something to do with it. It's also probably that the themes and messages in the songs on that album are some I really can get behind. That is also a big reason why I think the greatest show on earth is by far their best song so far, not only is it epic and sounds great but it also is about the beauty of the world and how it came to be through an irreligious perspective.
But It's very possible that if I had gotten into them earlier it wouldn't be my favourite, those "what ifs" are always impossible to answer I guess

Although an unanimus dicision made by the band, Marco, once said that the initial idea came from him. He said it while being drunk.
There are several moments during the concert where you see the others reacting to what is going on and at one point Tuomas almost breaks down.
Good for you finding good live footage of Annette. That is almost as rare as finding snow in the desert.
The argument isn't about who is the better singer, or it shouldn't be anyway. All 3 are amazing vocalist. The problem is the style they sing in. Tarja was opera only, probably a concious choise by Tuomas who writes almost everything. They made a concious choice to take a different style singer in Annette, who is almost pure pop/metal. This is what alianeted most Tarja fans, me included, but brought in more fans who became familiar with Annettes' voice. Now you throw in Floor who can do both styles and a heck of a lot more and you get the current mess.
From what I've seen so far it really depends on what song they play that each singer shines. Some I prefer Tarja, some I like Annette and some are Floor all the way. Even mood makes a difference which singer you prefer at any given time.
As for what you react to next week... The entire Wacken 2013 concert *grins evilly*
