I agree, the Wacken version is way better. This Vancouver version is just OK for me.
No worries! It is cool to see a different version. Wacken's too good, Nightwish pretty much ruined everything for themselves by being so damn perfect in that one. :-D
Also, the sound's always going to be different. Dad's a retired professor of audio tech (and crazy in the best way, as a senior lecturer he ran full tilt into a wall to illustrate something to do with reverberation of sound in microphones, cycled into a lecture theatre in full reflective gear, lay down in a corner to make noises, inflated rubber gloves and was known for always making a gin and tonic during the presentation at international conferences - and having it be relevant to the topic) and a fair bit of his research was about the behaviour of sound in a room.
Maybe that's why the sound doesn't seem as good in Vancouver - did you work metal shows there? Would you say it's hard to get metal to work in a space like that?

The emotion of Tuomas after the intro in the End of an era version says it all. Great musician.

I was there...and ofcourse public didnt know that Tuomas had a plan to kick her out the next day but I remember something was different, nobody had ever seen Tuomas being soo emotionalon stage, my friends said after the conert that this was something special.... nobody had ever seen Tuomas eing soos emotional , Idnt agree with how he treated Tarja, has vseen their live documentaries and Tarja was the onlu woman in th eband. male bandmates always had ladies of the night with them and they were huge party animals.... but Tarja seemed to e kinda intorvert , alsoI felt that Tarja didnt deserve the way she was fired but afterthey hiredDloor ( who was a great friend to Tarja) iand I listened some of tehir interviews and Tuomas has adnitted that he did sometimes mistakes how he handles Tarja siituation , They even write to eachother and 3 years ago I saw Tarja and Marco in Finland singing due, was amazing, so everything is okay betwee them

The original version was always one of the songs that hit me hardest listening to it, especially watching Tuomas in "End of an Era" knowing what surrounded that performance. The Wacken version though... brings tears to my eyes every time because I'll always remember that video being the confirmation that the Nightwish I knew and loved didn't just survive but was going to be better than ever., which at the time I was really worried I was losing a band that had influenced pretty much my entire musical taste.
"Song of Myself" is one of their very best songs. Live at Wacken. You have to see it if you haven't yet.

I love these two-fers! If I may make a suggestion, Sleeping Sun, both Tarja's and Floor's version. Not to compare, but to see how they both made the song their own, but in a completely different way.
I want to suggest out a two-fer too. The Islander. There are no bad versions. It's hard to find a production quality live recording with Annette, so you may have to go the official video for that one, but any one with Floor will be fine. Again, picking a favorite is not required. All are great. EDIT: never mind, I see my (Ever) Dream has already come true, and I'm a dolt who missed the video. *facepalm* Keep up the great work man.

I think you should do another double reaction with rhe Wacken opener, Dark Chest of Wonders and the closer, Last Ride of the Day. There's some pretty spectacular production with how they open and close their shows, and I would love to hear your thoughts on them.
I wish I had an angel - it was also sung by Tarja and Floor and it one of the songs not every reactor on YT reacts to.

I was at the NYC show at the Hammerstein Ballroom. One of my top 5 shows of all time. Sabaton and Delain opened for Nightwish. Doesn't get much better than that.
I saw that same tour, but at the Filmore in Silver Spring, MD! I was blown away by Sabaton, who I had never heard before. I can't wait to see Nightwish again when the world opens up.

Such a great tour! They added a last-minute club show in my city and I got to see the first-ever live performance (with Floor) of Poet and the Pendulum before they officially debuted it in Dallas. Also where I heard Delain and Sabaton for the first time, so basically that concert shaped my musical tastes for the next...forever 😂

For an early supporter it was unimaginable to hear another voice in Nightwish as we fell in love with the band, bc of Tarja's unique voice (at the time 'beauty vs. beast-vocals' were just being invented.
I'm happy how Tuomas music actually has evolved for a big part bc of the different vocalists. From Classical to Jazz/Rock to 'whatEver he can Dream of as Floor can handle all the technique challenges of his song writing.
Beauty & Beast vocals appeared earlier than that: I believe that Theatre of Tragedy was the first band that has been formed around that concept. Their first, self-titled, album was released in 1995.

I think it is time for Slaying the Dreamer! This song also has two incredible versions with Floor (Buenos Aires) and Tarja (End of an Era). It is a banger so may as well leave your hat off.
Regarding choking on your own hair, how do the goddess singers in Nightwish manage to avoid doing that? Yet another reason why Tarja and Floor are not mere mortals. 🤘😉

Always excited for Nightwish Wednesdays, and this one does not disappoint! Ever Dream is such a classic.
I think I've settled on The Kinslayer as my primary recommendation for your next Wednesday. I've been floating a few different tracks out there, that one included, but given that you have multiple videos to choose from (including End of an Era, which features Emppu on a different guitar for the song), I think it's an interesting one to slide in before TGSoE.
Replying to myself to add that the Floor version from Buenos Aires does feature Marko doing the spoken parts that are pre-recorded by Ike Vil on the Tarja version.
The Kinslayer, I think, is the ONLY song that I thought Tarja did better than Floor. All the others - either on par or on the side of Floor. Kisnlayer needs Tarja's voice, I gotta say.

Kai plays the drums like a machine. Have you noticed that when Jukka is drumming he has a different groove to his playing? When I am rocking to Jukka, I find myself rocking my head side to side (not up and down). There seems to be a kind of swing feel to his playing. Watch how he moves his body to the music. However, when Kai is playing he has a more machinelike feel. It is very subtle, but different. I think this is why we all miss Jukka. He has a very unique feel to his drumming. Even when he is kicking the double base it seems to have a certain rhythm maybe involving a slight accent. Kai is so perfect it sound like a machine. Is it just me or do you hear and feel the difference. Don't get me wrong, I love Kai's playing. Respect for both. Peace.

With Ayreon, you need to differentiate a bit: the song headlines Marko if you do the live version. The studio version has Bob Catley instead, if I remember correctly. Both are awesome though. But since Tank is mostly doing live versions: Yes to River of Time! Also: Age of shadows live for Marko, Hansi AND Floor! :D

Hey Tank, great double reaction !!!! I was at the Orpheum show and it was absolutely freakin awesome. Delain + Sabaton were killer as well. One of the best shows I have ever been to. Interesting that comment about not expecting to stomach Tarja's operatic Nightwish, as for me it was totally opposite. After falling in love with their first album, I loved how their music evolved whilst dreading the fact that Tarja's vocals were turning more and more contemporary. Her dismissal did it for me and, even though I actually saw them live with Anette in Brixton, I didn't get back to it until recently, with Floor finally doing justice - and in her own style! - to the songs I thought no one will ever sing as well as Tarja.

Haha I really think you would love Elan, and I might consider the Wembley Arena performance, but Elan in general is just an awesome uplifting song. If you get a wild hair, do a double reaction with the Studio Video as well, because like the Islander, there are some visuals you dont get to see live, that are very ..... uplifting :)

The reason I believe would be perfect for you to react to is that you really have a love and appreciation for Marko's vocals and he is the main vocalist of this song. The song is beautiful and it also has Troy playing guitar with what I believe is a magnet to create an absolute stunning sound that has to be heard.
Now that you've reacted to this, I really suggest going to see the Floor Wacken 2013 version after this, because honestly, I think that one was so much better just voice wise from both Floor and Marko.

I am sitting here, watching, enjoying, when a stray thought crosses my mind and I nearly hurt myself laughing. Kai = duck!! You see him drumming, easily, smoothly, no stress, cruising along ........... but you can hear those kicks cutting through , brdrdrbrdrbrdr. Yep. Upstairs looking nice and serene. Downstairs pedalling away hard!!!
Next video, either 'Elan' 'Weak Fantasy', or 'Shudder Before the Beautiful', all of which are off the EFMB album. A good lead up to 'The Greatest Show on Earth'. :)
I really like that Floor has made her own version of Ever Dream. It's such an iconic Tarja song and it would do them both a disservice to try to copy Tarjas style. Now they're both awesome versions, unique to each singer.
I love Tarja and Marco! they returned to sing together a few years ago and it was magical to see them together again.
At the start you can actually see before Tuomas stops, as he's still playing, looks like he's blowing out his breath as though trying to keep it together. This last show with Tarja must have been really difficult.

I was going to say this! For me they are both amazing singing this song, but in very distinct ways. They give so many different colors to song that I really think everyone has to listen both versions. Not for comparison but for appreciate two great singers!

Loving these double-headers. Not wanting to compare the singers (who are both great), but more to just see how the band has changed and not changed over the years and hear their different versions of the same some. If you're up for some more double-headers, Sleeping Sun and Gethsemene would be good candidates. There's a REALLY old video of Gethsemene floating around where everyone has short hair.
Always nice to get a double feature! Ever Dream was from Century Child, which was the album in between Wishmaster and Once, and if you check out the album, you can tell that it's a transition phase between the 'power metal'-ish vibes of Oceanborn/Wishmaster to Once's more commercialized sound. I would recommend that you also check out a few of the gems in their older repertoire (Bless the Child; Dead Boy's Poem, the eponymous Wishmaster, Stargazers, Gethsemane, etc.) to see how Nightwish's music has evolved and yet intrinsically remained very Nightwish-ish. I'd reckon putting Oceanborn and Once back to back, you'd be surprised at how far-off they sound but will also still make you think 'yep, that's them'.
Also: I know some were probably yammering about this not being the Wacken version, which was stellar, but I'm glad you're also shedding light on the other live performances. Wacken was amazing, but the mix and editing were so polished, and I love performances where things like off-key notes (Troy in Wembley's Alpenglow) and slight vocal missteps (Floor in Buenos Aires' Nemo) are heard because it makes the entire thing all the more raw and organic, and similar to how a concert would actually sound if you're there.

It seems you have yet to see anything from their 'From Wishes to Eternity' concert.
That "End of an Era" version is the one and only right one and also the best and most genuine version of this song...we just know and feel it. Maiden was my number one band before I heard Tarja to sing Tuomas music of "Sacrament of Wilderness" in 1998. Maiden is still there though ; ) ... this is just so awesome !!!

I think this song is one of the best examples of why it was so hard to part with Tarja for the band. I know there is a lot of discussion about who is better, but I think there is no "better" it is more about who is there at the moment. Tarja was awesome in her time as lead singer for Nightwish. And yes, I do prefer Floor, but without Tarja to start it all, I am almost certain, Nightwish would not be anywhere close to where they are today, or if they would be anywhere at all. And this song showed me again, that it is time to dust of the old Nightwish CDs and listen to them again. So tomorrow it will be End of an Era live on the way to work.

I also slightly prefer Floor for what she brings to the table, but without Tarja there's no Nightwish for Floor to take over. Too bad that there were too many burned bridges between Tarja and Tuomas, because it would be awesome to have her invited to a special show at some point in the future (like they did with the former bassist and with Juka).
@@galdanag You are right, but maybe wrong (hopefully wrong). The bridge between Tuomas and Tarja might be burned, but Tarja and Floor are friends. Maybe that bridge can spann the river.
Yeah, I might be day-dreaming, but still, I really like the idea of Tarja comming back to Nightwish for maybe just one special concert. While I am dreaming, maybe a 25 Years of Nightwish concert live at Wembley STADIUM. OK, I am dreaming, but could you imagine that 90,000 Nightwish fans and Tarja and Floor singing together?

If Tarja was the essence of Nightwish, Anette's era wouldn't be so successful. Anette was very different, in every way, and still their albums sold a lot. You can't say that a vocalist gave life to a band when this band is in its third vocalist. The compositions gave.

@@Secanh0 Anette's era being successfull - depends on how you look at it. Dark Passion Play is not longer the best selling album - Once is.
1. DPP was/is Finlands most expensive album in history, we're talking 700 000€ on just album production - and the label invested a bunch more on promotion channels to ENSURE revenue after investing so much.
2. Metal/Rock fans who never knew of Nightwish suddenly did thanks to the whole Drama Play in 2005 with the Tarja spectacle.
3. Imaginaerum - although unanimously better according to the opinions of all band members, and most reviews - did incredibly BAD in CD sales compared to Dark Passion Play - my guess, people bought the Dark Passion Play out of curiosity in wanting to hear how the new voice of the bad was going to sound - as Nightwish back in the days were almost ceremoniously always emphasised through the definition of Tarja's operatic voice. They got underwhelmed and did not even bother checking Imaginaerum out.

As far as recommendations go I'd say "Sahara" live in Tampa and "Sleeping sun" Floor or Tarja or both you choose! I think you are going to really like them and they are slightly overlooked from reactors though they are great songs. 🌷

Also, may I just say that it is extremely nice to see a new (or not so viewed) version of some of these :-) Yeah yeah the Wacken one is great, but this gives us perspective on the other 364 days that Nightwish amazes us for many other reasons.

HARD agree on that one, on those songs Floor doesnt even come close to Tarja, even though she has just as much talent and maybe even a bit more versatility in her singning overall, but for those songs, Tarja takes it any time, any place!

@@AHVENAN For me, every song from Once sound better with Floor voice. That album hasn't the same "classical structure" that the previous ones had. Dark Chest of Wonders and Nemo from Wacken are the best versions of both songs in my opinion, so is Ever Dream from that same concert. Sacrament of Wilderness is indeed perfect with Tarja though.
And Wishmaster, and literally all the rest, LBH.
Tarja and Floor have been friends since Floor singing in After Forever. I heard Tarja say yesterday that they still keep in touch. It was a live stream. I think you should try some of Tarja's solo stuff. A cover of a Muse song and I walk Alone and Oasis. Buenos Aires Dead Boys Poem

Ooo Dark Chest of Wonders double reaction!! As much as I absolutely adore Floor, I do feel like Ever Dream really is Tarja’s song. The song was written for her which is the reason Tuomas was so emotional.
i just found out that most of the songs in "Once" have been written about Tarja, Tuomas definetly loved her and I feellike "Once" is their best album ever, artists are best when they are in pan for some reason,in "dark chest of wonders" Tuomas even talks how he is afraid that he cant write about anything else but Tarja but his love for her is killing him so he has tolet go" I always felt like Tuomas sounded like crazy ex bf when he kicked Tarja out...now I understand why he hated Tarjas husband soo badly at that time but thankfully he has admitted that they handled the situation very badly and Floor who is Tarjas friend btw has never performed "bye bye beautiful" on Nightwish live performances....this shows that she has respect for her and thats why I dont like how some toxic nightwish fans make it seem like Floorand Tarja have some kind of beef....they dont at all and both are amazing singers , there are somesongs I prefer tolisten with Tarja and others with Floor , I deeply respect Tuomas as well, lyrics he writes are just soooo beautiful btw fun fact is that Floor has said that "Ever dream" is the most difficult Nightwish song for her to sing, she says that she changed a key a little cause "Ever dream" has written for very operatic singer( Tarja) and she doesnt want to sound too sqeaky
I was in the same frame of mind about Tarja's singing style as you due to the first couple of songs I heard. The more I hear though the more it fit in the overall scheme of things. Hearing her and Floor back to back definitely secured that thought. Both are FANTASTIC!!
Century Child was the first NW album I bought when it came out. A friend sent me Wishmaster over MSN in 2001 and I was hooked! CC is still my favourite Tarja era NW album. I saw them twice during the Once tour, on SRF and then again in Malmö. I wish this effing pandemic whould be over so I can start going to shows again! Great reaction, mate!

Personally, I agree with you that is hard to say Floor didn't made any song her own and just say that song is a Tarja song. But there are just a few differences that make me praise each version.
1- I prefer Floor's way of connecting the words and phrases. It seems more fluid and that she really thought on how to better pronounce the words, making it easier to understand the lyrics than with Tarja
2- Tarja's voice matches the older songs better, although Tuomas and Floor did an excellent job on the minor changes so it could fit Floor's voice better
3- Not sure right now (will edit later, probably), but I don't remember Marco singing the ending with Floor as he did with Tarja. Always prefer when he does those harmonies.
Love that you did the 2 back to back, and I totally agree with picking the latest official release...
...that said, gotta be that guy and say that I prefer the Wacken version. Something about it just feels more energetic, emotional and alive.

Everdream is my favorite song from Nightwish, ever. Not the greatest on a technical aspect, but it as been "My"' nightwish songs and is the one that got me hooked on the band for real back in 2005.
As much as i ended up prefering Floor on most of their stuff, even some older songs, this song will and always will be (for me) best in studio version with Tarja. The song grew up on me on many ways, throughout many challenge i was facing and it will always have this sweet spot in my mind and heart. Damn i was glad to see you were reacting to it!

That moment when Tumoas put hands to his face was very emotional. This song, and many other, he wrote about Tarja. He was in love with her. Maybe not sexual love. But she was his muse, his nymph, his sirren. Her voice was his inspiration. They knew each other since they were kids. And after that performance they fired her. Cant imagine what Tuomas was going through. No wonder Poet and Pendulum is masterpiece.

Another great Nightwish Wednesday Tank! Glad to hear you checked out the Wacken version too. My favorite version of one of my favorite songs. My number 1 for next week is Last Ride of the Day from Wacken 2013. Followed by Shudder Before the Beautiful from Wembley, and Gethsemane from Decades which I have never seen a reaction on!
The acoustics in this version is really good. You hear every part of the song clearly. Also I'm hearing backing vocals on Floor in the chorus that I don't think I've heard on any other live version,which is interesting. It also sounds like Floor is holding back, her voice feels a bit strained. Maybe it's a later show in the tour so her voice might simply be tired from the intense schedule. Great reaction as always.
I would really recommend to do Stargazers - one of my absolute favorite songs. And one of the few songs where Floor uses her operatic voice almost the hole time.
You should do BLess the Child, End of All Hope, Dead to the World, or, and I know this is totally out of sync with the previous ones, Wish I had an Angel. Out of these three, End of All hope would be the best imho.

Ever Dream is one of my favorite songs. Special place in my heart. I can really relate to the lyrics, there was a time when this really hit home. This song is also one of the most personal songs for Tuomas too. So the emotions he had were there for a reason..

I have a feeling Floor wasn't feeling to well. Don't get me wrong, she's still amazing, but she's almost motionless, doesn't smile and it's the first time I heard her voice sounding a bit hoarse.

Unapologetic Nightwish fan who prefers Floor on vocals here, I actually love Tarja on this song. Like you, Tank, She has grown on me over time and while I still have my preference, I have gained a healthy respect for Tarja, and Anette and their contributions to this amazing band.

Hey Tank, so glad you decided to react to both of them! I feel so bad that many reaction channels kind of forget Tarja because Floor is so amazing as well, and especially when the song is a "Tarja" song. I am a longtime Nightwish fan (since ~1998) and I grew up with Tarja singing these songs, so I might be a bit biased on some of these opinions. But Ever Dream is a Tarja song for me, especially with the End Of An Era version. It has such an emotion in it, Tarja sings it out of this world, and her voice combines so well with Marco so the ending is epic. But just to clarify, I do enjoy Floor's singing as well. Both the new stuff and the older songs. I was so happy when Nightwish made the Decades tour, because I was too young to attend any Nightwish shows when Tarja was in the band. But Floor and her singing talent made it possible that I got to hear the old Tarja era songs live as well, so I love her for that. Cheers Tank, can't wait for more Nightwish. AND WINTERSUN!

When I watch End of the Era footage I always remember that guys of the band knew it was their final concert with Tarja while she did not. (They handed her the letter which fired her right after the concert. And published it on their website at the same time)

I really love Ever dream.. it’s my favorite song.. in general. If I had to recommend a song or 2... Nemo.. for sure. And definitely Last ride of the day, I’d do that one after “Show” though.. it’s an amazing end to this journey. The last chorus at Wacken will perk your ears up a bit lol. Great stuff, man.
