Regarding Emppu not showing off: in an interview he said that as you grow as a person and a musician you realise it's not about showing but about the music and the people listening to it. You stop play to show off your guitar chops and play more to serve the song and the audience. I listen to a lot of prog and tech metal and I'm 100% behind him. Dude plays with real feeling.
Regarding The Division Bell: the name is a reference to the bells rung by the UK Houses of Parliament to signify a "division" is occurring during debate (essentially the issue being debated is not unanimously agreed upon and a vote is taking place). The Members of Parliament then have 8 minutes to get to their respective lobbies, one for a positive vote on the matter and one for a negative.

Yeah i can remember there's an interview with Tuomas before EFMB where he was asked if there were a lot of operatic vocals on the album, and he said he doesn't believe in doing something "just because you can" and that everything has to serve the song and belong in the music and the message or else it just sounds forced and less genuine from a writers perspective.

I am in the same boat as you Tank. I never thought that I would love a cover more than the Pink Floyd original, but this version has more angst and is darker, which fits my taste better, while the original is more melancholic. I still love the original, but I now prefer Nightwish's version.

I think the only thing I can't live without from the original is David's ending solo. I love Jukka's solo, wouldn't change a thing about it, but you just can't beat David Gilmour digging in on a lap-steel.

It's kinda like the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence, which Paul Simon himself complimented as the version he would've loved to sing. Some songs are just so good that they are great for the style of their time, but also even more perfect for another.

    • @jaynagerber7474

It also depends upon the song; the two you mentioned were both essentially bare-bones, minimalist songs (studio versions, at least - this one has had more added in Pink Floyd concerts), so it's at least somewhat easier for a great band to add depth and flesh the song out without negatively altering any part of the original.
Of course, great bands will always find ways to present a cover (or tribute😉) of a song and make it at least a fraction better than the original.

4:36 I know this comment is 3 years after the original posting, but Jukka was playing this show with a massive migraine, one of the reasons he holds his head between playing. The little side motion of Tuomas' head there was asking Emppu to check in on Jukka, and 30 seconds later, you see Emppu up there checking. He then hops down when Jukka nods he's okay.

I've said the same thing about so many Nightwish songs, but this one is one of my biggest favorites, even if it's a cover. The eerie atmosphere Tuomas creates, Emppu's guitar solos, Jukka on drums, and of course Marko! Nightwish can be fantastic without a female vocalist. At least for a song or two or three.

  • @Dregon84
    @Dregon84 4 года назад +6

One of the reasons why I think Nightwish works so well is because there are no egos in the band. They're all there to do their job and have no need to showcase how awesome they are. They know they're good, and they all have their moments throughout the albums and live performances. Emppu especially is a person who is there to do his job and take care of the others. You may have seen it in some of the videos already, but for example in Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 you see brief glimpses of him walking around the stage and checking up on everyone, placing his hands on their shoulder and saying something. He does that at least on some Wembley songs as well, can't remember which ones though.
EDIT: Oh and I agree about Marco being the best singer :D When Tarja was forced to leave, I was actually hoping they wouldn't replace her and would just let Marco sing. He's a Finnish heavy metal icon, one of the people who essentially started metal in Finland back in the days. Check out his band Tarot at some point. He started it with his brother Sakari in -82 and the band is still officially active although the current status is sketchy at best due to them losing their drummer in 2016.

I believe Tuomas once said in an interview that Nightwish Is about the music. I think that’s why he always looks like he’s so into what he’s playing. They all so love what they do & it shows when they play. They love each other, they love their fans & that shows onstage & the fans can see & feel this & I believe that’s why Nightwish has lasted all these years. I’ve only known of them for a little over a year now & I think with all of the reaction channels out there right now, the Nightwish army is growing by leaps & bounds because of all the requests to play their music! That is so awesome! Everyone needs to hear this amazing band! Thanks for your reaction Tank!

It occurs to me that a few hours after this show, Tarja was handed The Letter. I think it shows in the band's faces in this song, especially Tuomas. And the song, as written by Gilmour, was about happier days with Syd Barrett, so I do wonder how deliberate the choice was. Food for thought.

just went and grabbed my new Nightwish tee shirt so I could come in and watch Nightwish reaction videos. Lo and behold there is a reaction video to High Hopes, one of my all time favorite Nightwish songs (along with about 20 others). I think Emppus guitar playing is also spectacular without being flashy, however my reaction to his solo in this song was about the same as yours. While the solo is not originally his the way he played it made it my favorite guitar solo of all time. you are right they are all so good. I believe they may be the best band of all time bar none and i mean none. I understand why the fans are so rabid because I have become one. My bucket list item is to see them live in concert. I sure hope that soon because I am older and I don't have all that many years left. Please come to the US and have an outdoor concert where they can work their magic so all of us fans can go. Great reaction to a great tribute song, Tank. I'm reminded that Tarja was let go from the group right after the show and maybe the emotion of the moment carried into their performance. Tarja was in the midst of a wardrobe change during High Hopes so the rest of the guys were playing without her and I can't help but think they had that absence in mind. Marko slays it every time and he put his brand on this version without a doubt.

I never paid much attention to Pink Floyd after "The Wall," and music was just white noise in my life for decades while I put my right brain in exile and tended to practical matters. Massive respect for holding off on Poet/Pendulum. A few more dives into Tuomas' psyche first are a great idea.
I think their performance of this served many purposes. It gave a sense of their feeling (original was based on a band split, their tribute forewarned a band split?), it offered Tarja the traditional outfit change and breather, but also I think the band was faced with the idea of being without a female lead for a duration. Marco clearly has chops, but that had to be proven to NW fans back then. There are demos of several songs with Marco as vocalist floating in YT and elsewhere on the internet which back up that idea.

Another genuine reaction....I love it! I also agree with you about Marko's voice - it's incredible. So powerful, with a lovely vibrato, yet it's effortless for him. Look at his face and eyes when he's belting - no signs of any stress at all. He's totally relaxed, just like Floor when she sings. Again, like you, I prefer this over the original, which I still love, but this just amps up to another level. And we have the privelege of listening to not one, but two sublime solos from Empuu. Most other bands have maybe one or two musicians that stand out. With Nightwish every member is a virtuoso. And that's before Troy joined....

    Hey there Tank.
A superb reaction to this song.
I am a long time fan of Pink Floyd, seen them a few times and allways got the chills.
This version of High Hopes is really excuisit. Really touches my soul.
And your fact: this band is great. Yes, the band is awesome!!
And another fact, not only Tuomas is in the music, they all are. And not only Emppu is not a show off, none of them are.
And for sure the present band, Tuomas, Marco, Emppu, Kai, Try ans Floor, none of them are show offs.
They all do what they need to do, nothing more, nothing less.
But they do it in the best possible way you can!
Need there be more said? Don't think so!

Emppu is so underrated. He plays in a Gilmour style in the middle and then later he added a little touch of Emppu. Who covers a Pink Floyd song? How can you win that battle. Floyd is so iconic. Marco killed it! Great reaction job Tank. Next time. Peace.

APC's version of Imagine is so much more poignant than the Lennon version, in my opinion, because it makes you wonder about the fulfillment of wishes, and whether you actually want what you thought you were asking for.
Lennon was a masterful songwriter, no doubt, but as the world has changed, so has perspective. I think Maynard really took the different perspective to heart and created something both dark and beautiful from that.

I was waiting for this one!!!! (Already Thursday in Australia!) Terri Nunn (of the band Berlin) played this to Dave Gilmour (he had done the guitars for her song "Pink and Velvet" - in a style like Comfortably Numb - several years earlier) and he liked it considerably! Jukka still works for Nightwish in an admin role ( with a LOT of "clout"!) Emppu doesn't need to show off - he lets his guitar speak for him!! This song made my friend, a life-long fan of Pink Floyd (from Syd Barrett daze), into a Nightwish fan in one afternoon! ...............and this was LIVE!!!!!

Hi Tank, this is my sixth or seventh time I’m watching this video. It makes me feel so good to see a guy who knows what he’s talking about and is a music lover, dare I say music freak, go nuts and appreciate a genius song played by a genius band. This is a live performance worth to be mentioned in the music history books. Tuomas, Jukka, Emppu and Marko are so passionately involved and feel the music. There are no egos, no singled out personalities, they play in function of the music. I always wondered if the upcoming dismissal of Tarja had something to do with the emotions you see and feel in this tribute.

Over the last 20 years I've been very lucky to have seen Nightwish perform with all 3 lead singers at ProgPower in Atlanta. Still a few tickets let for next year's show with Conception, Rhapsody, Stratovarius and Dream Evil among the 21 bands playing over 4 days. I'm biased but there's no better environment to catch this style of band in!

You really feel the absence of the bells in the middle of that verse, don't you? I kept hearing you build this up and build this up to yourself, and I wasn't sure it would quite live up to what you were imagining. It's a wonderful song, and I love this rendition. Aside from Marko just SLAYING, Jukka is the star of this song for me.

Me again, I think what makes Marko's vocals even more impressive, not sure if anyone's mentioned it on any other video, is that he had throat surgery for polyps which went wrong early in his career (back in 1996) and basically lost part of his register and had to develop his voice all over again.

My favourite song with Tarja is actually a cover being "Walking in the Air" if you are in the mood for some really young Nightwish from about 2001 before Marco or Floor this could be a good one.
