The Best Deer Cartridge Is? | Spaghetti Shootout Ep. 5

- On this deer-themed episode, Ryan butts in on the validity of the Butt Out Tool, the guys debate the best deer cartridge, and surprise-trivia catches them off guard. Are Mark’s answers close enough to “scrape” out a win or does he once again leave the studio “rubbed” the wrong way? “Tine” in for the answer to this question and a whole lot more.

Meatball question: If you had to compare your opponent to a Vortex optic, what would they be and why?
Oh that's a good one
You should do a rifle cartridge draft. Just like an NFL Draft and try to determine a winner after 10 rounds. Once a caliber is chosen it is off the table. Trades available. Team colors are Mark and Ryan’s favorite Camo patterns. Mascots are their favorite Vortex rifle scopes. Jimmy is commissioner and interviews the coaches on their draft pick.
"I didn't like the way I felt while I was using it" - Hahahahahahahaha pure gold
.270 Winchester best deer cartridge, end of argument
Meatball: What prehistoric mammal would you want to bring back and hunt?
Fabulous idea!
Woolly Mammoth…and lots of them.
Saber tooth
Ryan said it a few pod casts back that the hottest, ramped up 6.5creed doesn’t compare to the most average .270win. Great show guys! Cheers from Canada eh 🍻🇨🇦🤘
Thanks for watchin'!
Well it all depends on range, because of the higher BC's of the 6.5 it will eventually outrun the .270
And the Creedmoor has the added benefit of less recoil, and (for me) MUCH easier to find ammo.
I can only think of one store within 50miles of me that regularly has .270 in stock, meanwhile I can walk into any one of a dozen stores within 15miles and find a smattering of creedmoor ammo.
The older cartridges are dying out unless you shop online or visit stores more specifically dedicated just to hunting. 6.5Creed is chambered in AR's, SCAR's, hunting rifles, match rifles, you step into a gun store and practically trip over something chambered in 6.5Creed. .270 is nowhere near as popular anymore.
I'm not saying it's a bad round, it's EXCELLENT at hunting anything up to elk within 400yds (potentially further with the right bullet and good glass) but the Creedmoor and its PRC cousins have made a serious case for replacing or just becoming to modern "go-to" over a lot of older cartridges for newer shooters.
@@Kross8761 I don’t understand how you struggle to find .270 it’s available at literally every store with a sporting goods department near me
@@bodiewest9202 not near me, I can occasionally find .30-06, but I haven't seen a box of .270 in any store in probably 2 years. 6.5 Creedmoor however is always available in multiple "flavors".
Most stores near me lean much more toward the "tactical" realm, but even sporting goods stores that stock "hunting" chamberings like .270 and such don't have it. I do have a bass pro that's not terribly far, but between their prices being retardedly high and me not needing anything they sell I haven't been there since shortly after it opened in like 2017 so they may have stuff like .270 but I wouldn't know.
Mike - I also loved it when Ryan confessed that the 270 Winchester is “a fine cartridge” that beats 6.5 Creedmoor in every measure that matters.
I knew bearded Mark would be undefeatable.
😂😂😂😂
Well he lost and then they tied but bearded Mike>cleanly shaven Mike
as a fellow 300 wsm lover, i’m so glad Mark finally came back i root for him everytime !
Stealing a cup or buying your own 😂😂 lol they always bring up Ryan taking his cup
Great concept, love the podcast! Gotta go with Ryan on this one.
As always you guys make me laugh harder than most comedians podcasts! Love the addition of the Trivia! Meatball question: What precautions do you take knowing you're going into Bear country? Bells, Spray, or a 10mm? Thank you to everyone involved for making such an awesome show!
Appreciate the kind words Ben! Love that you are enjoying it - definitely more to come! And thank you for the meatball question!
Haha keep having fun with it guys. It definitely comes across to all of us people things watching on this end!
Love watching these!
Thanks for tuning in!
Good job gents, one of your best videos yet 👍
The question if I had to choose just one, is a choice I had to make last year when we moved in November, in had my choice of .44 magnum, 45-70, and 6.5 creedmoor in the white tail woods. I chose the .44 mag lever action. This year it's the 45-70.
Way to go lads! You guys are killing!
Thanks for watching!
The most iconic rifle?…Mark almost hit it outta the park, but I will have to choose the Remington 742 carbine in .308 👍👍👍…my #1 Georgia deer killer…or any 742 for that matter 🤘🤘🤘
Right on!
This one made me laugh more then the others so good job guys. Best of luck in the deer woods this year 👍
Glad you enjoyed it - it was one for the books 😂 Thanks for tuning in!
I agree, wife heard me laughing on the lanai.
Keep the trivia part. It was awesome!
06 over the .308 Ryan?! Fame has changed you 😂
This was awesome and hilarious. Glad I found your channel. Btw my crossfire+3x is excellent and the Christmas sale is 🎯

Ryan, A-luded
Elude, is what Mark does when asked about Naked and Afraid.
He runs and Hides. E-luding naked predators.
Haha.
Or, what Ryan said,
The Deer E-lude Mark's Bow Season.
Great show.
the Butt out tool is AWESOME.....cant wait to hear these guys chime in tomorrow night.
It's a good one!
First 5 minutes were priceless
7mm-08 for the win. Awesomeness in a brass vase.
Yup 120 s just like the .270 ballistics 130. Sup .280 ballistics
In my experience, moose whitetail, hog, caribou, bear coyote all hate it. Just saying🤷♂️
Lol love the trivia
Thought we'd mix it up a bit 🙃
Thanks for the shout out guys! How about best straightwall cartridge for whitetail? or most important woodsmanship skill?
7mm-08 never gets any love
I’m afraid of horses and I have to agree with Ryan the model 70 is the rifleman‘s rifle. However the Winchester model 98 lever action has to be the most iconic deer gun. Because not all hunters want to be riflemen they just want a freezer full of deer.
Do you have a traumatic horse story like Ryan's cow story?!
You guys rock! Thanks for the shoutout!!!!
30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor are not the only cartridges I have but they are my favorites.
MEatbaLL of the Month! FFP vs. SFP for American big game hunting (I'm in Western WA) but lets say for someone who lives in the Midwest/Southeast/East but plans to do a Western hunt once ever two years.
1) people love to bash the creed but it’s actually pretty solid for deer. Nothin like the 25-06 though 🤓
2) wait so is there going to be an asterisk next to Mark’s win column since Ryan so graciously awarded Mark 3 points on accident?
Meatball Question: for Shotgun/Pistol only areas, AR pistols are quickly becoming popular. How about debating an accurate, “far” shooting (for a slug) setup like a Savage 220 20ga bolt gun vs AR Pistol setups being used for faster bullets, capacity, and sometimes more range
Good insight!
Meatball.243 the best deer and all-round gun.for the north American hunter.
Informative!
My question submission is this: You've freed a Genie from his lamp, but he doesn't give you anything you want, but a choice. He'll rearrange and get you any firearms you'd like, but they have to stick to one of two philosophies. Would you like a collection adequate power, but a lot of capacity? Or would you prefer extreme, maybe even over powered, but low capacity? The choice would swap out every gun in your safe for this philosophy, and would affect everything from your carry weapon to your red dawn weapon to whatever niche or mainstream hunting you enjoy.
FYI. Butt Out was a great gift exchange for you work, especially for those who don't hunt. Instructions on package was a big hit.
Even though I don't have one, the Model 94 Winchester in 30-30 is THE iconic deer rifle. Marlin 336 probably second. Yes the model 70 is the "Rifleman's Rifle" and your 760 is fast with both being available in long range, more powerful, flat shooting cartridges but the 94 was taking deer thirty-one years before the Winchester Model 54 and 42 years before the model 70 was introduced. Of course Savage had its models 1895, 1899 and 99 which were very successful and its model 192O bolt action which was not a big commercial success but definitely ahead of its time and not basically copies of the '98 Mauser like the '03 Springfield and the two Winchester bolt actions.
Next episode….Scent Control…yay or nay. Or for a MeatBall…….would you eat Shoe leather or your hunting partner first if lost in the wilderness.
Obviously it’s the .270
Agreed sir
😂
Wrong
Absolutely agreed
@@DinoNucci 😂👏✌️
.270 for deer , hands down !
Best sandwich? tuna salad, egg salad, clubhouse, Rueben, or hoagie etc.
Rueben…if made with good meat, cheese and especially kraut 😊😊😊
Hear is a good one for a topic. GPS or compass
Fun episode.
Best cartridge? Hell whatever I’ve got in hand!
Meatball of the month topic suggestion : best handgun and cartridge combo to hunt all but the very largest North American game? (Doesn't have to be suited for large moose, bear, etc)
great question for next time. which game animal is the best for jerky?
Excellent question!
Canada Geese is awesome only thing is you will be going through a lot of floss for your teeth. You will make your Dentist happy.
The 308 Winchester! You get that 30 caliber bullet without the recoil the 30/06 gives you and it’s good out to around 350-400 yards witch is as far as anyone should be shooting at deer anyway!
Debate- trucker hats while hunting?
great score for Mark
Convinced my pops to give me his model 70 a few days ago!
Meat ball: best handgun (platform) + ammo combo (caliber) for hunting
Meatball question: do you keep broken arrows if they broke during the process of harvesting an animal you're proud of, or "retire" an arrow/broadhead if they're part of a good hunting memory?
11:35
Jim in serious doubt, that Mark could take a squirrel...
My 25-06 drops deer instantly in their tracks but my 270 and 308 make it even more dead
I just now watched this episode, laughed me arse off. But, there is no A at the end of Missouri.
Winchester 94 in30/30
Marks taking it well
300 HAMR leads the way.
Medium sized game can be easily killed by rounds that seem "too small" and also "too big".
Find a platform that works for you and train the hell out of it in the conditions where you expect to get your kill.
Most people don't train enough so they end up using particular accessories or trendy cartridges as a crutch.
A Savage 99 in .308 Win. Iron sights. Lever action. Iron sights. Detachable mag. Irons sights. Can have a scope mounted. Iron sights. Wood and blued combo. Did I say iron sights?
Of course any decent calibre with good shot placement at the right distance will take deer down. But if I had to choose only "one" calibre for all deer species it would be my 7mm-08. Low recoil, broad load-range and good enough BC and still carries enough energy past 500-600 yards to take down a buck although idk why anyone would wanna shoot that far out but if you really had to it can get it done. For me hunting is all about trying to get as close as you can to the game you're trying to bag.
Meatball: What would be your opponents most accurate pet name be? I am going with Muckapedia:)
Love the 7600/760, but I feel like I see wayyyyy more 7400 woodmasters. Everyone has the old Remmy Semi Auto.
Meatball topic: If you're opponent was a hipster cartridge, which would they be and why is the 308 better?
So we learned that mark has much more knowledge than we realized but his opinions still dont matter if ryan is in the room
Meatball question(s): what meat makes the best meatballs. Boxers or briefs and 9mm or 45 ACP
Mark said 6.5 over 30-06 but then chooses the Remington 760 because it comes in 30-06, 270, 308…😂 and nothing says deer rifle more than those cartridges. Total contradiction!
6.5 needmore🤔😳😂
Overly hyped paper puncher
Mark doesn't seem to understand that 30-06 was determined to be the most an average soldier could stand without flinching in an era when the average soldier was about 5 feet tall
Not sure about your height number there, but I've heard/read men had better average grip strength then.
@@sauerkrautjr possibly. I'm not 100% sure about the height number either, I just know it was a bit lower than now. And men worked harder back then, that's for sure, so I guess they had more muscle. I could use more practice in precision with my 30-06, but don't have a big problem with the recoil either
M1 Garand is the best deer rifle ever. 8 rounds of 30/06 as fast as you need them out of the best open sights ever fielded on a rifle. Change my mind….
I love the M1, but any decently built bolt action is tougher, lighter, more accurate, and safer. Semi-auto rifles, even the M1 have problems in the cold. It's not exactly a weather sealed design.
Mark! You didn’t say the 300WSM?! Are you feeling okay?
😂😂😂😂
7mm-08 Remington
Meatball of the month: What cartridge besides 6.5 Creedmoor from the #10minutetalks series would you recommend for a new hunter?
Good Remington and Winchester
Meatball: What camera do you take in the field to take pictures/video and who would have the most selfies at the end of the day?
Speaking of the rut…if, as a hunter, you come across a buck doing his thing with a doe, do you let him finish, or naaaahhhhh?!?
#Meatballofthemonth
#Meatball
#RutStuff
Stud waders or felt? Dats a meatball!
First of all "long range deer gun" is 300-500 yards and you shouldn't be shooting that far unless the deer is wounded. You could be a military sniper and I wouldn't care, limit your shots to a reasonable distance.
Second, come on Mark, 6.5 creedmoor? The cartridge is powerful enough, sure, but the bullets you find off the shelf are horrible for hunting.
Anything in the 308 family, and anything in the 30-06 family will perform much, much better.
Most iconic deer rifle is marlin 336
When is that 7 PRC 10 minute talk coming? Gotta be soon
Meatball Question: during a days hunt, who would eat all of their snacks first/what snacks are they eating/and why did they eat them? Bonus question: who takes the first nap of the day?-
Meatball specific comment
Meatballs are a good use for the liver of a Whitetail deer
.308 vs .30-06… go!
What's a more primitive weapon modern inline muzzleloader or 30-30 win?
A hairy or downy woodpecker these guys crack me up
MEATBALL QUESTION: What caliber would you use to both protect yourself/family and hunt small and big game with??
308
12 gauge.
REM 600. 350 rem mag. Can’t beat it.
Meatball question: fixed blade or folding blade for field dressing?
Meatball question: if this is a spaghetti shootout, what sauce is Mark and Ryan platting?
U can get into the 6.5 thing easy it’s great paper sub Mia shooters still prefer 6.5x55 and 6.5x06 my yote getter w 95 gr horn v max but Iam a 7 mm 08 120-140 plenty for deer size game only 100 fps off .280 specs w 150 s and d r t deer and hogs never had an issue w the Swede but 7 mm just a bigger hole I don’t shoot pass 200 anyway except for yotes
Meatball: what is the best bullet model for big game?
30 cal makes sense to me
Correct
I believe 7mm makes the most sense
Meatball question: Which all time rifle caliber has harvested more deer.
30-06 maybe?
30-30, 30-06 is probably a distant second but the 30-30 has age and popularity on its side.
the most iconic deer gun is a 1894 Winchester always will be.
Meatball- Why is the .458 Win Mag the best all around cartridge for everything? Do it, PLEASE!
Rectum!? Damn near killed him.
Mark has me at defining deer as deer but lost me at 6.5 Creedmore
*Creedmoor. And why? What’s wrong with it? Deer won’t be offended if it’s a 6.5 or a 308. Dead either way.
@@jeremychapman6468 Nothing wrong with it I was just joking around 😀
@@jeremychapman6468 if you use the wrong bullets (basically anything made for 6.5 creedmoor) then your deer won't be dead. I saw a guy take seven shots at a mile deer with it, from 400 to 100 yards. Hit it every time but never caused enough damage to deliver a clean kill.
@@JamesWillmus the only significantly "wrong" bullet at the ranges you described are FMJ's and some light varmint rounds.
6.5 creedmoor has enough juice at 400 and in that basically ANY bullet designed for hunting deer sized game will perform well upon impact (and if you don't use them too close a tipped match bullet like a Sierra TMK or a Hornady ELD-M will even work well if you happen to be in a pinch) I'd highly suggest a Hornady ELD-X or a Sierra tipped game king, both work marvelously out to about 500 yards with a 6.5Creedmoor.
A good bullet does not mean an animal will drop dead if the shooter executes a poor shot, multiple hits does not mean multiple "good" hits.
Vitals or CNS are the only shots I take because that WILL kill the animal quickly pretty much regardless of bullet design, but better bullets work better for that obviously.
@@JamesWillmus Have been using the creedmoor for 6 seasons now, it’s performance has been spectacular. I’m assuming your buddy would have had the same results with any gun
243, 270, all levers.... nothing else matters
Meatball question- what outfit/gun and scope combination would impress you if a stranger opened their case at deer camp.
