How about no?
your mom
He needs to pay the bills, somehow. Sponsorship is one way to help. Why the hate?
I don't fucking understand these "idle" games that incentivize you... not playing them? What the fuck
That fake DLC in Rabi-Ribi is actually a type of malware known a wabbit. Because it multiplies. Yes, wabbit is a real term
That's literally genius on so many levels.
I love that so much
no way. he's not lying
How wascally
For those who don't know the term, it's more commonly referred to as a "Fork bomb". Basically, a process opens itself, turning into two, which opens themselves, which turns into four... yadda yadda yadda... until system crash, or you somehow stop it. While the Rabi-Ribi one isn't technically a straight-up Fork Bomb, it's sort of the second closest thing; it opens "programs" (technically speaking, a tab on Chrome or other Chromium based web browsers shows up as a program under Chrome's tree in Task Manager, along with its extensions) until the browser (or your computer) crashes, hogging a whole lotta resources in the process.
I'm sure the developers had no ill intention making it, but a virus is a virus is a virus, and one bug or glitch could turn an anti-piracy measure into a thing that activates for everyone, even legit buyers.
The GoreBox Anti-Piracy measure is genius considering 90% of its player base is all under the age of 10.
putting it that way makes it even better. some 10 year olds absolutely got traumatized from it
never played it but the game seems dogwater so yeah that was a good idea

The best part about Manhunt is that on the Steam page, Rockstar and Valve claim it's broken because of the operating system you use, not because of Rockstar's own fault. No accountability was ever taken.
To be fair, they don't really have the kind of money to fix anything. 🤷
It's even funnier when they used pirates cracks on the steam version.
Rockstar being Rockstar 😂
@@TheLastComaIt really is a shame they don't have the resources to fix it. They should make an online version of GTA where you can use real money to buy in game money. I'm sure they'd make bank off of something like that.
@@leatheryfoot6354 No way dude, no one would be stupid enough to buy fake GTA money with real money
11:06 I remember when Larry Bundy Jr talked about this. Like, they were willing to implement malware that would steal information from everyone just to stop a few pirates, not to mention threatening lawsuit when confronted.
Way to go, Flight Sim Labs
Surprising that they didn't get any charges for identity theft and/or fines.
Someone should sue them for doing that
Straight up they deserve to be shut down and someone at Flight Sim Labs deserves legal action taken aganst them.
That shit is fucking unacceptable.
Imagine watching Larry Bundy Jr
@@TotallySearch what's the problem with Larry Bundy jr?
Not going lie, Rabi Ribi's anti-piracy method was kinda funny to me.
I just imagine bunny girls rapidly filling up the screen until your computer explodes.

Yes and i have no problem when i've illegally try this game i didn't know i was so powerful
So in case of Manhunt, the legal copy assumes you’re a pirate and the way to overcome this issue is to pirate it
On PC yeah pretty much
"Anti-Piracy measure that screws over buyers more than it does actual pirates" example no. 4,566
I mean, every copy of Manhunt on PC is a cracked copy
that Flight Sim Labs thing is legitimately creepy. like, that's seriously really shady. there's no way anybody steals your passwords for "anti-piracy measures". they have something else in mind for sure.

God, that Deus Ex game is such a throwback, devs used to think they needed to make semi-legit games for mobile, now they’re fully aware all they need to do is release trash.
I mean.. Deus Ex: The Fall was trash.
the trash just outcompeted the good games
its financially unviable to make good games because theres too much trash stealing attention

@@theblobconsumes4859 yeah, you're right. I had forgotten about the OST. 'Twas the only good part of The Fall.

Fun fact about the gorebox piracy system.
When it was first introduced there was a command for it called /whatAreYouDoing? And was removed later.
reminds me of this one admin command script that was popular on roblox called adonis and it had a secret command where youd get jumpscared by a clown on repeat until you die if you typed "?iloveyou" into the command bar

Stealing people's passwords as an "anti-piracy measure" has to be illegal. That's insane they got away with that and even threatened to sue, when in reality they should've been sued into the ground.

You wanna know the craziest anti piracy measure? A wholesome message from the owner of berserk games when you pirate just shapes and beats.
No malice, no mean intent, no threats, not even just a simple crash or message saying "ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!"
Just a message from a guy who understands why people pirate games, and simply says "hey, I totally get it. I used to be that guy too. But I still can't let you play the full game. If you want, play the demo, and I even have some links to take you to places where you can learn about game development and how to get started on a career in making games!"
Best part is those links he provides are legit and clean
My take would be trashing the quality with intentional random crashes(1/256 each frame) and other more subtle measures if the copy can’t be fully validated as legit.
@@cyanideytandcuriousseadogg41601/256 every frame is too much, you ahould do 1/2048 so when they get settled after the title screen intro they have to do it all over again lmao
@@lmaoeyisdead that’s more evil. I like that
@@cyanideytandcuriousseadogg4160 i have more ideas, where your jump is slightly reduced in a platformer game reaching the end of a level, and a difficult jump is at the end of each stage so you literally cant get past it at the end
but the thing is, it feels super close, so you try again, and again, and again, and again, and again
its a little niche thing that i think would be great as an anti piracy measure
@@lmaoeyisdead so pull a mirror’s edge there. I would also trash the sound and visuals on purpose. The point is I can’t get them to stop pirating so make the pirate stop playing as a personal F U
I think the dude who made gorebox managed to get like 60 people with the jumpscare within the first day of the game being out. Imagine that, having a good time cheating until that dude shows up 😭😭
Rockstar also uses cracked/pirated copies of their game Midnight Club 2 on steam. If I remember right, some people cracked it on whatever it was on before steam, then Rockstar then used those game files and not original files on steam. The biggest tell tale this was the case is the hackers left their group signature in the game files of their cracked copy, which was in the Steam copy.
Max Payne 2 on Steam had a Myth intro splash. Yep, that old cracker group.
Okay, I think that last one is genius. You create a fake DLC packet which crashes the system. While the regular players will never encounter it.
chromium would hang before anybodies computer crashed.
That's malware and both "borderline illegal" and "borderline immoral".

Best anti-piracy method is to produce a quality product that people want to buy.

Agreed. I also buy music that deserves my money.

Craziest anti-piracy measure #1:
cheap games
#2: price adjustment by region
#3: robust convenience
4: maintain the good will of your player base
#5: People pirate free games to get hacks and stuff so I don't think any of your tips actually help
@@romancatholicgameing First you are conflating pirating, as infringing copyright with "pirating", an inaccurate descriptions from uneducated people who refer to altering memory addresses and cracking as "hacks and stuff"
Second, while none of the previous advice can eliminate 100% of copyright infringement, minimize it to the point is no longer a problem, most definitely helps
Making players with illegitimate copies encounter fake bugs as an anti-piracy method is pretty counterproductive. I can't imagine someone being like "Oh boy, I surely would like to buy this game that barely functions."
The bunny game one is really good, it's pretty funny and gives you enough time to realize you fucked up before nuking your PC lol.
at some point, I wonder if an indie dev just chooses to make some crazy viral anti-piracy stuff in hopes of it being free advertising for their game...

I remember playing a sims game on the nintendo DS, and i used to change the time and date on the nintendo to skip time ingame and make money quicker, after you did that the ingame Charakters called you a "time travelling cheater"

I heard that Ace Attorney Investigations 2 had an interesting anti-piracy measure: the game will change the language to a fictional in-game language (Borginian) but a fan patch fixed it long time ago. You can watch short by TheCapcomHistorian about it
I also remember when I was a kid, I downloaded a pirated version of Mirror’s Edge and couldnt complete it, because on one of the levels anti-piracy protection slowed down the character, preventing her from jumping high enough to pass

Wait a minute! You're that guy who submitted a clip to be used in an Oddheader video!
Holy crap it's you!
If I'm not mistaken on the Manhunt anti-piracy measures, they kick in on the Steam version because Rockstar used a pirated version that bypassed the anti-piracy checks in game. But Rockstar removed the pirates' initials from the code which broke the work the pirates did and the game now detects the pirated game again. Did rockstar even test that? if they tested even just 15 mins in it would be blantantly obvious something was wrong and not game breaking glitches for a big game back in the day.
they clearly didn't test it
hell, i didn't know about this when i decided to play manhunt and i got stuck on that one gate at the beginning of the game
i then kinda gave up on it
i'm surprised that they STILL didn't bother fixing it
They tested it as much as they tested the remastered trilogy.
12:36 Okay, as hilarious and genius as this method for detering pirates is, wouldn't forcing your computer to open webpages until it crashes be kind of a big legal no-no? (Asking the dumb question here, I know.)
Legally speaking, I don't think it's quite bad enough to constitute malware. All it really would do is crash your computer once and you'd perhaps have to restore data to get rid of the tabs.
This video is a lot better than the recent ones. Well-paced, lively, also a topic that I don't think you've covered before. I really enjoyed this one!

Wait, what?! There's a Ranma 1/2 game? The anti-piracy screen is Ranma's girl form naked?! How did I not know about this until now?
Rabi-Ribi mentioned, all is well in the world again
Oh man! The nostalgia trip I just got by hearing somebody mention the Tribes series for the first time in over 10 years! Too bad the last one is shut down and the new one can't maintain players...
Also gotta love how most of these anti-piracy measures didn't work and/or mostly affected paying customers rather than pirates, just like always. LOOKING AT YOU, DENUVO!
Okay the story involving Manhunt's piracy being found out from an OFFICIAL copy of the game instead of something related to actual piracy is both hilarious and frustrating

Hey have you heard about this weird easter egg in Nicktoons Attack of the Toybots? There’s this really weird box in the game with a hidden message relating to an enemy. One of the most recognisable enemies in this game is Mr. Snuggles, a pink teddy bear who seems no way inappropriate for a Nickelodeon game. That is unless we use the free look tool, included with the Dolphin Emulator, so we can unlock the camera and get a closer look at Mr. Snuggle's box. While the image here is actually oriented upside-down, given they never expected anyone to actually see this, what it actually says is: "I'll hug you and kill you, you'll never sleep again, I'll kill your parents." Always fun knowing there's all kinds of traumatising stuff hiding just outside of view in a kids game.
