  • By the mid 1980s, the hot hatchback game had evolved, the class-leading Golf GTI now in its second generation to step yet further ahead of the competition. However, Renault's flawed but feisty 5 GT Turbo offers more power for similar money these days, so could it be the better bet...?

R5 GTurbo Tungsten grey was this colour same as the one I had t was fiddled with higher boost etc it went like a stabbed rat used to frighten me to death! Was bad for cracking piston liners bad weak point on those 1.4 engines. VW Golf GTi mine was red not as quick but so well built and what an engine you hit 5500 rpm al day and it just laughed. Only prob was they suffered from water ingress on the rear arches but both iconic 80's cars fond memories! Try to find either today to buy as a toy and their prices now are eye watering. I had a mk2 golf gti 16v, R5 gt turbo, metro turbo, maestro turbo and a 1.6 205 gti in my time and they were all amazing, terrible, fantastic, fun and terrifying in equal measure. I still love my hot hatches (currently have a cupra 290) but loved the old 1s more for their rawness and pure nuttiness. Modern cars are obviously 'better' but they isolate you from the driving experience. If I could have 1 of the old 1s now I'd have the golf 16v or the 205. My R5 gt turbo was as unreliable as hell. It blew a turbo and had all sorts of other maladies so I only had it about a year before I got sick of it but when it was behaving it was such fun to hammer along b roads. I was going to buy a Golf back in the day but drove one (mk2 16v) and didn't think it was all that impressive. Nice but not really all that fast or interesting. Then I drove a gen2 GTT like the one here and handed the money over. There's nothing like an old school turbo when it wakes up and pushes. The sound, the feel and even the performance made the Golf seem very plain.
    Of course I wasn't so happy when it blew up not long after I got it. And then again not long after it was rebuilt.
    I also didn't care for its love of letting water in when it rained (never found the leak but presumed the sunroof) and the steering was a bit shady with its weighting where it would change as you went through its motion.
    For all that though it had some of the best seats I've ever sat in, red carpets and just made you feel great when taking it for a thrash.

The only thing that actually felt better was that it felt more solid build wise. But it just had no excitement or fun in comparison. I've never driven a 5 GT turbo but it has to be way more fun to drive, all that with only a tiny little 1.4 8v! Alas, they were built out of tin foil and even back in the 90s they were becoming a rare sight (especially with owners turning up the boost without bothering to strengthen the engine first!)

    See as a second or third car to keep in the garage as a modern classic the R5 has more appeal against the golf. Back in the day as a do it all car (I.e. a hot hatch!) the golf was in a different league. Still fun but way more refined and nicer to drive.

  • @robertboland3923
    @robertboland3923 2 года назад +1

    People say hot hatches were ruined, and I would agree quite a few were modified to a point of "form over function". But these two icons were prime examples and possibly the reason for the modified/custom scene.
    The lil frenchie became a little tyre scorcher with a bleed valve and straight through. There tiny animals with some choice modifications, in my mind I don't desire a bone standard r5 turbo. I want the 200hp k-tec sorted one like my buddy had, feckin lunacy on wheels. Only car I've been in that passenger's shoulder touches the drivers, there tiny and them arches are iconic
    The mk2 started the whole dub scene back in the 90's, while it's gotten a bit ridiculous fashion wise you can't deny the creativity and workmanship that went into the crazy projects. A "slammed " mk2 on tasty wheels still looks tough as. But it was also handling orientated back then not just for static looks. Even a 8v with a decent driver can be a very fun car. But these cars could accept a variety of funky engines too. When the 8v is too lazy, instead of tossing it aside why not 20v turbo it, or vr6 people used to hold onto cars.
    I also like to point out that the mk2 golf is one of few cars with a body flaw from factory. The swage line on both c pillers are different. I think it adds character

    I owned a 4 year old Golf Mk2 16v in 1990/91. Journalists raved about it. More astute observers noted that the performance of the standard 1.8 non 16v was more accessible, whereas you had to rather wring the 16v to get the extra performance. Also, some years prior, I rented a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 for 10 days. For me, a far more fun, and enjoyable car to drive than the Golf GTI. So, no, I disagree that the Golf was ".... yet further ahead of the competition...". It was OK, but I never really missed it when it was gone, or have any significant great memories of it.

    I had two GT Turbo's and two GTI's , The golf I always felt was really over ratted. The handling and brakes were not really precise either. However the quality was far better than the GTTurbo. The GT was faster and handled , but tricky on the limit. If I could have one again I would have the GT turbo. Aside from reliability, they were the best of all the hot hatches of the day. I had an RS Turbo that was chipped back then which was alot quicker than the standard car , but again handling was just ok the brakes under heavy use had nothing but brake fade.
