    i am currently working on an ocean sunset. The first pass was off to a good start. Then as always with acrylics I found that the whole painting dried darker and flatter than i wanted. From years of working with acrylics I have learned that a painting usually takes a few layers so I was back at the easel this evening. I then took a break and decided to find some inspiration on youtube and was delighted to find this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!!

    Great video, thank you. I'm thinking you aren't using a reference photo of a sunset? ( as they tend to have very dark aeas due exposure problems. )

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  3 года назад +1

      Thank you. I'm not using a reference. Where we live I get to see a sunset almost every night that the sky is clear. I usually base my sunsets on those from life moments. I agree about the exposure. There are parts of this painting I plan on darkening a few more areas on this one though. I appreciate your comments!

    Thank you for sharing! When working with complements, do you need to let the layers dry a bit between sessions, to avoid them greying/causing mud when they mix, like when you bring the orange up into the blue sky area?

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  3 года назад +3

      Yes! that's a great question. When working with oils you'll want the layers to be dry when brushing complimentary colors together. I wish I would have mentioned that in the video, so I'm glad you asked the question. It's easy to make mud when mixing compliments and to avoid that you have to layer the colors rather than mixing them together on the canvas.

      @@gagnonstudio lovely tips thanks! Speaking of mud, I think another type of complimentary set is mud/saturation which I've noticed when doing an underpainting then putting pure colours on top, brings out the saturation

    Hi Tim. I seem to have a problem with acrylic titanium white being bright enough. I have read that using an oil titanium white can enhance the brightness. Is this so or do you have a tip re this. Thank you. Love watching your tips and your paintings blow me away. Such talent.

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  3 года назад +1

      You can always add oil paints over your acrylics at the end, just not the other way around, so if you find that the titanium for acrylic is too dull you can try some oil at the end. Warm white is a great one too for sunsets, which is also an oil paint. Thanks for commenting!

    Hey Tim! I'm curious, what tonal underpainting color did you use for this sunset? I've tried yellow ochre, but it's tough to tell the strength of the oranges and yellows in the midst of a yellow underpainting.
