I only played Letty's route so I didn't know J.J. was so bad lol. My endgame party was me controlling Malkya, with Laeticia, Marielle and Nina as party members. Really I only played Nina and Malkya by the end.
I have to disagree to be honest. I looked at their temperaments and moves. Figured out that they all have a style they adhere to. Ray is a guerrilla fighter(at all ranges), Albaird is a mix type, Letty is a conventional hack and slash, Malyka is a support-distractor, Nina is a support, Midas is a support-offensive, Mireille is long range, JJ is a agro, Red Hair is Midrange-support, Elena is mid-range offense, and combination wise their skills, passives, and supports all work with each other equally. What makes one style better than another is how one plays. I often times defeated opponents so fast that Midas never had a chance to fire spicule except for bosses, and even then he went down faster than JJ. I even specifically geared them with JJ short range and midas long range.
Not that it matters much cause the video was just for fun but I played Midas all game and I thought Spicule was slow and terrible when you can just cast the Ice Needles spell that was instant no cast time, if i recall correctly the numbers in the tooltip didn't look that great so people may overlook it but you could shotgun enemies with it and spam it and it always did really good damage. He had some really good passives that synergized really well with it and I think it had some defense/res piercing? If you want to play as him I suggest trying it. I ended up beating the last boss with J.J all I did was his one slash move that was reminiscent of Raymond's, I forgot what it's called but it's one of his few not counters. It's a shame he wasn't better and had more varied moves but I really like playing as a robot guy.
I wouldn't take the tier-list too serious; its like you said, Ice Needles is actually what maks Midas broken and in general breaks the game. The same goes for a couple of other characters and their setups; example being Theo who can easily act as a reliable aggro-tank played by AI even in the bonus-dungeons, which in turn gives you space to utilize your ranged DPS properly. Theo also comes with super-good CC, which easily puts him above Raymond in most instances. And you can build JJ in a way that one-shots most bosses, save Etheria-Queen. It's dumb, but's there and doesn't really deserve "trash"-tier. But I get that people might not like the counter-focused playstyle. Sure, if we soley judge by how the AI controlls the characters however.. However I think this tier-list is a very subjective view from someone who played through the game "casually" (and I don't mean that in a bad way). It's just that there are a lot of underutilized mechanics in the game that will stay hidden if you don't actively dig them out, so I get the initial impression of some of the characters.
Def feel like Ray should’ve got boosted up to top tier. His damage is the best in the game and his AI is prob the best. Also Nina can deal damage but all her attacks are AOE so she can’t target, the damage on her ceremony attack deals good damage too
Nina can be op if you know what youre doing but it requires a brain so thats gonna cancel her out. Ray is by far the most useful in the bunch. Big booty android is also top tier, people skip her becuase shes slow, which is their loss becuase again, when used right she wipes the floor and takes the damage.
From my first play through so long as I had Nina and Albaird (as main) in my main party, it was all good. I might give Marielle more of a chance though (I prefer long range damage rather than melee). As long as you have Nina for heals/revives and a reliable long range DPS then you're good.
All the long ranged physical damage dealers I've noticed are the most powerful. Opera from Star ocean 2, Maria from 3, Reimi from 4, never played 5... but yeah, these characters you can sit back from a safe distance and do tons of damage. Keep your bonus boards ect.
Reimi was so weak early game that i dropped her the first playthrough, on the 2nd i tried her out in mid game where she became okay and in late game she was unironically oneshotting the first boss phase of the final boss
Opera really IS so busted in Star Ocean 2. If you use Remaking to put "MP Drain" on her weapon, you literally can spam Tracking Plasma/Alpha on One and Hyperlauncher indefinitely with the occasional Healing Star from halfway across the battlefield without ever having to worry about anything.
I love Nina as a character but I hate how the game made her obsolete. Even if you didn't use Elena you could just get the passive that let you leech life when you damage things. Given how much damage you can deal you can leech more life than you have. Only outright one shots can kill you. I mained Marielle once I got her. My favorite character. To bad you get her so late in the game. They really did her dirty with that. Especially since I once read that originally she was set to be the female main protagonist instead of Letty but they wanted someone from Aster IV. Not sure if that is true, but even if it is couldn't they have worked Marielle in earlier? And if it wasn't, same question. I mean why hold off on her so late. She got so little screen time.
I want to a girl because it's a little thing of mine where I try to find good RPGs with feMC's like legand of heros and persona it is a male dominated space RPGs so it's fun to try and find them plus I get the extra feeling role playing as someone because it's a even bigger divide from my own personality
Btw my friend While I would love to see tte tier lidt for the other Star ocean games. Hell i could help you record if you need some help with photage. But I WOULD very much wanna see a eternal sonata tier list!!
@@locloudanerpg oh :) Well its wirth a try. Its very much star ocean in turn based form if you ask me. I havent played it myself in 9y now. But I say its worth a try if a window presents itself :)
I’ve been hesitant to buy this game. The only Star ocean games I’ve played are the Last Hope and Integrity and Faithlessness. The Last Hope was my intro into the series and I thoroughly enjoyed even though the reviews are kinda polarizing. I and F…….idk what happened or what changed behind the scenes but it was garbage. So now that a newer title has dropped and I hated the last game so much that I’ve been putting this one off.
@@zeosummers3984 totally agree. The only thing I liked about it was the license stuff. I can’t remember what it’s called but I made my healer invincible and just spawned heals to burn through the game.
I looked up tier lists for this game and there is no consensus at all. Reddit is all over the place with Albaird being the only person constantly in S tier. Webside The Gamer has Marielle in 8th out of 10th while Gamerant has her in 1st. but Gamerant ain't innocent because they have Albaird in second to last...and both have Midas in last.
I just finnished the game. My god is JJ not only awful. But WHAT WAS THE POINT?!! 😂 But yeah Marriel and Elena are easy top charachters. To me Marriel just so god damn OP 😂😂😂
just finished second story r and about to download divine force its too bad marielle is voiced by the second worst voice actress in all of entertainment so i would never use her sorry erica while i loved you as the new norie in four goddess online ever since tales of berseria every time i hear your voice now im reminded of eleanor being a total f**king c**t to velvet and trying to turn laphicet against her and steal him away form her that the rage and anger form those events come rushing back to me that i end up swearing at the top of my lungs at the character and my screen lol
Him saying J.J. & Theo are just sh*t gives further evidence to the dual-protagonists thing being a marketing gimmick. Also, mages in SO have always kinda sucked to play as.
Have to agree on JJ. He's so cool looking but a total let down in combat. Its sad both of the optional characters are a waste. This was still a great entry. Correction on Nina. She does have attacks in the form of traps. While not as satisfying to execute, laying multiple AoE chimes around enemies will leave them stun locked and keep combo going. Her efficiency as a Healer is inventive and hats off for her gameplay design. Really she is Healer/Tactician build. Hope they get to make another with refined DUMA mechanics. And please for love of god make better 3D models/artwork. These designs were....rough.
Why use a healer in game where you CANT DIE cause you have 2 healing passive + you so have so insane dmg you even one shoot bosses xD I ALWAYS HAVE MAX HP and have never used items in my entire playthrough'
So basically the God tier is the same as SO3: Cliff and Maria reloaded
Marielle is my main ever since she joined the party. Both effective at close and long range, single target or multiple enemies.
I use JJ for bosses.
I only played Letty's route so I didn't know J.J. was so bad lol. My endgame party was me controlling Malkya, with Laeticia, Marielle and Nina as party members. Really I only played Nina and Malkya by the end.
I played the healer in SO5 just to grind through it but Nina seems like a fun one to control.
My final party was me controlling letty, and then had Elena, Nina, and Marielle as ai, worked quite well too
That’s a good party.
Dude the pewdiepie clip had me dyin haha! Great list. And whoever designed Rey had evil intentions at heart….

There’s no excuse. He is the ugliest protagonist I’ve ever seen haha.
Always good to see a new tier list from you. Do you think you can do a Resident Evil 4 gun list? Either Remake or original.
