In my Star ocean 6 review I give my points as to why I think this is such an incredible, and interesting comeback for the series and let you know what the game does great and not so great. Framing this game as an excellent COMEBACK game makes a lot of sense and is super descriptive of what this game accomplished.

It really can’t be stressed enough how much of a sharp turnaround this game is considering the trajectory this franchise was going. Getting something like this after Star Ocean 5 is some serious whiplash.
It also makes me look less crazy when I tell people that Tri-Ace is actually a pretty good dev team when they have the time and money. 😅
Tri Ace is amazing imo, just slipped up a bit. I think the next game (if we get one) will be even better. Also Star Ocean as a series is just so cool, would be a shame to end

I love it. My only complaint is that I can't stop the game timer on ps4. 9/10 I adore Star Ocean.🍻

Would you guys say the game is worth it for someone who has no attachment to the series in general as well? I played First Departure R on Switch a while back and sadly did not really enjoy that game personally, but that's pretty much all I know of the series. Is this worth a second shot?
I deff say so! I didn’t have much attachment either, I found this series through my girlfriend. If you like modern action rpg’s with an anime aesthetic you will most likely have fun

I just simply don’t like the characters faces and design, like it too fake dolly… I hate that star ocean continues this looks, Star Ocean used to be my favorite game back in PS2, I wish they goes like Tales of Arise design characters….

The fans that love it are the most likely to be talking about it. Star ocean 1 and 2 are among my favorite games of all time.
I found the quality of sound design, animation, writing to all be to such low quality that I had no interest in digging for the bits of the game I would enjoy. Wish I could love this game, but it just doesn't cut it for me.

Love this game just started it and love the story so far.
Downloading the demo right now because of fan reception. Also, I want to make a point that I appreciate you noting the movement. That’s my one gripe with JRPGs. Like characters will fly, cut through through metal and stone, do crazy gymnastics summon a celestial dirty and so much more during a cutscene. When I get control over a character they can’t step over a bucket and now a path is blocked?!?
I freakin' love this game! I'm a Star Ocean old-school fan since SO2 back in the PS1 days and following the series ever since. This one also surprised me coming off that terrible last entry. Kudos Tri-Ace for this amazing entry!

They really put their heart and soul into stating "were not finished with star ocean yet!" Hope the game get the attention it deserves to at least get Square enix to keep it around. It just goes to show they still know how to make great games. It's really like they took the best parts from all the previous titles and combined them together with a new spin. And its even better that you don't need to be a star ocean fan to just hop in and really enjoy this game!

I was so pleasantly surprised when playing this game! I haven't really enjoyed a Star Ocean game since Til the end of Time. I totally agree with most points you said here. I'd add another negative that could be easily fixed in future games is that the writing was TINY and really hard to read sometimes. Also, Es'owa was way too much fun! I got so into it that I hunted down every player I could find to collect all of the pieces. I'm really glad that I gave it a chance

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who loves this game. I do hope tho if they ever make another star ocean game. That they do dialog like they have it in mass effect. When I play this game, I'd like to be able to do all the private actions without them effecting which ending I'll end up with for my character. I think turning private actions into more of a dialog option where you can form specific relationships with characters and have a few romance options would really make these games more enjoyable. I've always felt that star ocean has the option to be the jrpg mass effect since it does have an affection system with the characters and different endings based off of that. They just need to capitalize on that aspect of the game a little more imo. The combat in this game was good though and what every star ocean game should be imo.

@SweisSenpai I would say that my only issue with it was the remington boss fight. I wasn't too big of a fan into that fight, but after you figure out some good methods of beating him. He isn't too bad. I just think it's super annoying how he can quickly make you lose your ap bar and then it's impossible to get it back up bc he'll hit you with those missiles everytime you try to use Duma on him. So you're stuck striking him a few times at a time until his shield is down and you can finally do massive damage to him.

Not just facial expressions and lip-syncing, but the re-use of gestures is bad too. Yup, there's Ray...giving another thumbs up...

Being a series fan since the first entry on SNES and every entry since SO3 coming out getting steadily worse, I was very worried for this game. But the pre-release demo already blew me away, signs of being able change difficulty at any time, fasttravel being unlocked super early and the gameplay being smooth yet in-depth, all made me extremely hyped for the game instantly. IMO it outdoes every single past entry in character development and balanced interactions, sci-fi and medieval mashup, story pacing and even combat. Only things lacking are really, it's slightly shorter scope which is most likely due to budget and Ost is kind lacking tracks. Star Ocean has never been a series filled with technical marvel, but I'd say the in-house made engine is rather impressive for what it's doing for fields and combat framerate, but not without chugging in densely detailed areas. Gonna be slowly working to finishing Platinuming this game, I could easily play this for the rest of the year, even having played since release. Not that it's a super long game, but it's systems are so enjoyable to dive into over and over again. Game of the year for me so far.

I played alot of square enix jrpg games like almost all the final fantasy games except 12. I played kingdom hearts games including 3 except a couple. I enjoyed other jrpg like dragon quest 11 and Tales of Arise. For some reason I never touch a Star Ocean game. I dont know why. This will be my first experienced with Star Ocean. I hope Square can invest in more money for this franchise and have Star Ocean 7 as good a quality as their final fantasies. It sucks that this franchise will still be in the back burner for them due to the reviews out there.

I actually do like Star Ocean 4 but 3 is superior in my mind. I haven't played 1 and 2 (yet) but so far 3 and 6 are my favorites and I do feel 4 is underrated.
4 is underrated to me as well! The combat is incredible and there’s plenty of content. The characters can be fun too but some of them are weak and the graohics are odd which turns people off

Star Ocean 4 was the only Star Ocean game I played and thought the story was very good. Maybe the earlier ones were better, but never played them.
Important note with 'Escaping'
If you watch the vid where this happens (5:20) you will see that the health of the enemy does NOT reset and they are not really respawning.
Note that this can be abused to take down optional large bosses in the field to do damage, escape, re heal then start combat again, chipping away at their health bar.
@darthbarasthewide2754yes the crafting can make it extremely broken even from early on, I ended up needing to increase the difficulty to Universe (no higher as first playthrough) in order to properly enjoy the battles. I even had to deliberately bench Midas because of his broken aoe super spell hahaha

Tried the demo. Awful.. Locations are empy... Battles boring... I ve never played a star ocean game but i am sure (or hope) past games were better. Tried the demo of second story R and was way better. Want good action rpg? Play Ys 8 and 9..
I got this game just recently during the Christmas sale on steam. And finished it So here is my unbias review. I might get hate cus unfortnately I didnt like it as much. Maybe its just my expectation for this game but its my fault for having such high hopes.
I have a pretty strong rig so I dont have any bugs or glitches but for some reason the graphic seems pretty blury and I dont know how to fix it. Not sure if the ps5 version is like this but at times I can barely see the character face cus its so blury. I know that Square Enix didnt put alot of money into this jrpg so I didnt expect an amazing graphics, some might say its a ps4 graphics at best and even ps3 but it shouldnt be this blury.
The voice acting was good but it so obvious that the character speak in Japanese or something because the lip syncing is horrible if you play in English.
Characters are pretty good. I did get invested in some of the characters. The english voice acting actually give the character life because the lack of expression from the character face needs it. And i have to point out the character model of the game. I dont know if its intentional but they sexualized two female characters for no reason giving them big boobs showing obvious cleavage and sexy clothing. Look im liberal in terms of that stuff but if you do sexualized the character atleast lean into it instead of pretending its not there. And one of the female character with big boobs showing clevage seems like a 14 year old. That seems awkward to me. One thing I like about jrgp and rpg in general is clothing for the characters. I dont know why we cant change character clothes or having and upgraded looking clothes once you upgrade your armor. All u have are stat boost. To me cosmetic is one of the keys to a great jrpg. Maybe they lack budget again?
The last section of the game "spoiler" where you play as Ray and get to go back to space with the airship feels like just a movie. You barely play the game. In terms of side missions it was not good. I love jrpg and rpg in general and the side missions is the key to a great rpg game. For me that is. All of the side missions are just fedge quest and the reward doesnt justify the time spent. So I did a couple and decided to just mainline the story. I know its not an open world but the hubs for each "world" seem very empty. Again it is obvious that the budget for this game is more double A than triple A.
Over all it was an ok game. Doesnt justify the full $60 here in the U.S. glad I got it on sale. This is my first Star Ocean so I guess I didnt have nastalsia or fandom for it so my views might be tainted. But my reviews are not based on hate just to hate. It is based on my love for jrpg in general and I find this game to have alot of flaws. I hope Square wont give up on this franchise and give them more budget to work with. The combat, story and crafting is the glowing part of the game. I hope the next Star Ocean will fixed some flaws I noticed and make it a rival jrpg to other jrpg

I agree with the lip syncing as I said in the video and I do think we all have something that makes jrpg’s special for us. For me it’s the combat, and the team said they focused the most on that which shows in the final product. The side quests were deff lackluster and I see your points. The post game gave me so many fun challenging bosses to test the combat on, and the world was so beautiful with colorful characters I just loved it
Star Ocean 3, 4, and 6 look so mesmerizing to me and I've been wanting to get into the series so bad. Which one would you say I should start with out of those? I'm open minded and adapt very easily to most gameplay types!
I honestly think 6 is a great starting point because it’s new and has all these QOL additions! If u want something older though 3 has that wonderful ps2 feeling

I don’t know if maybe I’m a bit of an old-school gamer, but the fact that you were complaining about these graphics when they are absolutely stellar, is just so hilarious to me. Most JRPG’s dont have great graphics. This is definitely not one of those games. You kids today have no idea what it was like back in the day and just how incredible almost all of these fucking games look nowadays. It’s like mind bending.
Ive been playing divine force for a few hours now and ive never played a star ocean game before this.. overall im enjoying the game.. but i have a question... is getting one shotted by bosses normal in these games? Ive only fought 2 real bosses but in each fight my party members are being one shotted like crazy... ill revive them and heal them and next thing i know another character gets one shotted from almost full health so i revive them and switch to them and by the time i heal them another one gets downed... so i end up just switching to ray and just fight the boss myself... if every boss is like this, its gonna get real old real quick.. just to be clear, im not a jrpg vet.. ive played a few but i mostly play dark souls, sekiro, or devil may cry type games...
I’m a die hard SO fan and this have to have the worst battle system I’ve ever experienced. It’s just SO but worst
the game could have been amazing but its in the line of xenosaga first boss battle you die and are grossly over powered
I can't recommend the pc version but if you have a console to play it definitely give it a go.

the only thing u were wrong about was when u said there was no Semi auto mode it is simply just built in to the game instead of u deciding to use it go play the game press ur attack button and put the controller down and watch ur charecter run to the enemy by themself and attack. Aside from that ty for this review this franchise really needs to be praised when they do something good and not just scolded for bad things like SO 5 lol

I don't get all the hype. I bought it and played it and I see it as integrity and faithlessness 2.0. Sure, the exploration and combat is better due to the duma mechanic. That being said... the story literally takes place on the same planet as i&f. Hardly any of this game takes place among the stars. The intro for ray was in space but it was just a cinematic. I was so looking forward to traversing space in a spaceship... this does not happen. In a game called star ocean you would think this would be a major part of it. Like previous games in the series. Instead the game basically has you running errands most of the time. Often in the same areas. For me the Duma mechanic was cool but I found myself getting bored after a while. Nice try guys but a couple fancy mechanics does not make up for lack of depth in the story. I could go on but it's not worth my time. I figured I'd put this out here for people who want an honest opinion from someone who isn't gobbling the knob of the star ocean franchise or trying to push people into consuming a product in hopes that they will consume more of my content related to star ocean. I give it a 4/10 honestly.

I really enjoyed the semi-automatic gameplay of a lot of those JRPGs of the 2000s - early 2010s, combat had the urgency of being live action but your performance had some assistance kind of like how some FPS games would do little tricks to help their console players like auto aim or expanding the hit boxes etc. Combat in SO6 was a lot of fun though.

Star Ocean till the end of time is one of the best JRPG's I have ever played.
I've already been HYPED to get started on the game this week (once I finish Valkyrie Elysium), but this increased my excitement all the more. Before I start, thought it might be best to ask: did you find that playing as one protagonist or the other was important for someone's first time through? I was going to stick with Laeticia, since I liked her route-exclusive character better, but I feel like missing some of Raymond's POV about the rest of the galaxy, Federation, etc. might make story threads confusing or lackluster.
Both protags should give plenty of context for the story! U can start with either of them and see 95% of the story. Very few scenes they split up and u see one perspective
@@SweisSenpai raymonds is better though. tri-Ace did say in a interview that marielle was suppose to be the 2nd character but square told em to chose laeticia. Raymonds cutscenes are better when they split up or so it seems that way so far. Plus the dynamic of private actions are going to be more detailed with context that ray is from the future but my opinion i guess. Music is more rocky on raymonds side too which is sick
Thanks for the review. I just finished Star Ocean: The Last Hope for the first time. I was hesitant to play it because I heard it got a bad rap, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed various aspects of it (though the story was shockingly copy-n-paste from Till the End of Time). I just bought a PS5 this past weekend and am starting out with Valkyrie Elysium to give myself a break from Star Ocean for a bit. My intention was to go right to The Divine Force, but while I said I'd skip Integrity and Faithlessness, I caved to the extent of buying a digital copy on PSN for $12 because I am going to play it one way or another. It wouldn't feel right not completing the series.
Glad to see a more positive review for SO6. I was worried with some of the poorer reviews. I am looking forward to getting to it, probably in a few weeks. The thing I am most irrationally excited about is getting a Nel figurine in E'Sowa.
I think you are going to love this game tbh. I really enjoyed 4 even though I could see its flaws, and the combat in 6 especially takes a lot from 4. I hope u enjoy it!!
@@SweisSenpai Thanks! It took me a while to get the hang of the combat in SO4, but from what I see in videos of SO6, it seems like it'll carry over. Actually, from what I see of SO6, it may actually have some stuff in common Valkyrie Elysium's combat, which I am just getting the hang of after a few hours into the game. Not the biggest action/combat gamer, but I'm getting better. lol
Awesome review! I might get this on Steam during this sale. But seeing how mobile the movement and combat are, is it easy with only the Keyboard and Mouse? Or do I have to use a controller for it?
I have personally not tried it with a mouse and keyboard but I assume it will be much easier with a controller but not impossible at all with mouse

I feel like I'm among the minority that actually enjoyed Integrity and Faithlessness, though I can definitely see why others would not. The Divine Force feels like an upgrade, for sure.
I think integrity and faithfulness was a decently put together game but idk for me it just felt idk uninspired and lacking the star ocean charm previous games had. I’m sure others liked it and I respect that of course but for me I just couldn’t get into integrity and faithfulness. I have recently started divine force though and I’m liking it so far it’s growing on me. My favorites in the series though have been second story and last hope (which I still have to pick up second story r.)

a comeback? idk this game is kinda terrible. its no where near as good as tales or ff7 remake. the voice acting is bad, the the character animations during cs's is crap. there is no way to keep track of who youve beaten in the mini game. and side quests need qol so your not wandering aound for 30 min trying to figureout where your supposed to go

The animations and graphics are the worst part, which I mention in the review If u can get past the budget it’s honestly a great game. When so many games like even FF7R don’t even let u jump or move around enough, I’m happy this game has a lot of movement and places to explore without hand holding.

The game was recently added to psplus catalog, so i thought “eh why not”
After the cool combat of SO4 (and atrocious everyelse else), and SO5 being that trainwreck of a game, this game is super refreshing, even on a budget. I just reached the Royal Castle’s battle, so idk how long the game is.
Exploration feels great and unrestrictive, the big zones are a joy (and sometimes breathtaking, even with the limited graphics). Because of Duma, backtracking is basically a non-issue. And the battle is a beautiful chaos, zooming all over the place.
The story is… uhh, pretty basic so far (i choose laetitia), and i already got over how weird the models look and act on cutscenes. But i love the constant banter, and character’s visual expression in battle. Specially Nina running amok trying to keep everyone alive, and buffed, and ressing Laetitia for the 10th time 😂
I have to admit the blindside thing does feel a lil wonky at times. But I'm about 30+ hours in, and whenever I'm not playing it (either at work or running errands) I'll just be looking forward to getting back in, at least until I clear both sides of the story.
I really love Star Ocean because they put a lot of effort into their Lore, I mean, have you looked at the Glossary for SO:TTEOT? They basically explain, in scientific detail, how their sci-fi technology works.
It's absolutely amazing.
I'm so happy that this was a success and I'm looking forward to a bright future for Star Ocean.
Perhaps someday they can really give us an epic game that spans across multiple truly fleshed out planets.
Anything can seem like the greatest comeback when a game like Star Ocean 5 was the previous entry. Though to call it a comeback would imply that Star Ocean was once worthy of high praise. It's not a series I'd recommend, but not one I'd tell others to steer away from.

Yeah though 5 was just ok but I did enjoy the gameplay.
Ol' SO5 had such pretty character designs / models - but D A M N what a boring plot and flat personalities XD - it was a shock.
Glad SO6 did better in the plot and personality department. Good and fun gameplay didn't harm either. The battles are wild... heh.
I can not confirm your battle experience with "escaped the battle" tho... this happened maybe 2-3 times in the whole complete playthrough to me...
so maybe you did something.... somehow wrong...? ^^; I'm serious I can only think of 2 or at most 3 times I accidently escaped the combat field...
And even there it made sense, as I was admittedly distanced too far from the monster.
the voices are good if you play the japanese voices. the english voice acting is hit and miss, the princess literally sounds like a robot... sadly... ( even tho she is not a robot.. )

I am considering to buy it on PS5, but thought that I would get it on PC, since it's cheaper, but when I read the reviews, people there say that the game is imbalanced, that you often encounter bosses or monsters that are unkillable while everything else is a breeze. Is there a way to mitigate this?
Til the End of Time was my first introduction to the Star Ocean games. Loved it and I can't wait to play this today.

It should be noted that, star ocean till the end of time, had a level cap of 255. Also post game dungeons, and super bosses are pretty much a series staple. Im unsure if the track, mission to the deep space is present, for post game dungeons, however that along with other tracks are also series staples

This is literally my new favorite JRPG and I've played FF16 as well as most other Star Ocean ganes. Idk why but this game scratches a particular itch for me and I love it.

@@SweisSenpai this isn't star ocean 1 or 3...this is 6...and for a series that's on it's last leg hanging on by a thread they should have done more than just put in a limited jetpack....lack of content is gonna be the end....one story told between 2 main characters which is the same damn story that your only reward for playing both main character stories is getting a different endgame character is a waste and lack of ideas....Great game 👍 👌 🙄😴
The game actually has an incredible amounts of content. The post game has 2 giant dungeons, filled with super bosses and challenges. I was happy to see this considering so many games release with half baked content. The bosses are well designed as well making sure u learned the mechanics of the game. That’s all just post game too, there’s plenty to upgrade and unlock
I couldn’t finish 5, it’s just sitting on my shelf looking miserable, ill have to grab this one soon. So many games to play recently

Side missions are ok, nothing special. The game has a lot of content though

I enjoyed it for the most part. I liked that the game wasn’t too bogged down by cut scenes at the start like a lot of other SO games. You got right into the action.
I did find the overall story kind of lacking though. All in all I would recommend the game and I’m hoping it’s enough to keep this franchise alive.

It really felt like they were aware of the budget limitations at times, considering how cutscenes, especially in space, played out. They explained a lot more of what was going on with the ships and their maneuvers, knowing they couldn't have 45 minutes of fully animated space combat like in SO4. I wish they could've done both, but all things considered, they really did their best to make them work with limited resources.
I love the cast because they're mature and competent. I've rarely seen two main characters show their strengths this much. Between this and Arise, I'm really appreciating this trend of more mature, reasonable and competent main casts. XD

Nah, this is trash. Star Ocean has been dead since SO3 and 4. I refuse to support this mediocrity, alongside Valkyrie Elysium, when there are better titles. They need to stop torturing these IPs now lol
