Yeah I've just subbed for reasons I'd expect only a minority will share but to name a few: -He doesn't put his face in the thumbnails or have 'talking into the camera' sections (I don't click on any thumbnails with the person's face plastered on there, especially if they're pulling some stupid face but regardless - I find seeing people's faces annoying for whatever reason, including my own. Plus most people sit too close to the camera) -He doesn't have any weird speech patterns that make listening for longer than a minute increasingly annoying (SwankyBox and implantgames have this problem - ending every sentence with the exact same odd intonation; once my brain notices it, it becomes more and more grating until I unsub. Also monotonous voices or people? Who end every sentence? Like it's a question?) I'd love to not find certain things irritating because then I'd be able to enjoy more content but we all have our peeves and I suspect people rarely actually voice them to the channel host rather than simply not watching again. Unfortunately most people view criticism as 'being a hater', which doesn't help the channel in the slightest.
Personally I love the look of the original. I feel like there is a wonderful texture and atmosphere due to the color choices and pixel art. I definitely like the look of the newer versions though as well - especially the portraits.
Just wish it was consistent in first departure R but then they goof when Ashlay faces left and his missing arm flips to be the right one (let alone Dorn's contrasting skin tone with game sprite, 4:50 explains). But then Millie's paper airplane is white and magically becomes brown when picking up lol. Fun for its time though dated given tedious backtracking (Pericci's bunny whistle helps the world map though revisiting purgatorium is torture) and Mt. Metorx being a beginner's trap as Cyuss alludes to it yet you have no chance.
The original has a lot more soul to it, you can see how much they are trying to push the SNES hardware. It even has Dolby Pro Logic Surround sound, its amazing. It just lacks the cut content stuff
Second story is one of my all time favorite games ever. I got the second on psp from ebay but inside the case was first story- and it was a christmas present wawp wawp.
During Tales of Phantasia's development, some people on the team didn't agree with some of the decisions that were being made so they broke off and formed Tri-Ace. It wasn't after the game was done, but 9 months before it.
One of those conflicts are regarding the game title. The original game title (and the title of source material) is Tale Phantasia. Namco changed it to Tales of Phantasia. Also, they're not internal Namco team in the first place. They've tried Enix first but they're not interested (bad move, Enix). So it's not strange if they then "broke off" to make a new company.
This is true... Original they were all wolf team... They split becoming tri-ace and the tales of team. Both teams continued to work with motoi sakuraba for music
Just beware. The plot to SO3, Till the End of Time, along w/ the English voices will make you question your love for the franchise. Definitely a step down from A Second Story.
That's great if that's the case. I was hoping SO4 might redeem it for me. Not quite there yet. That said, SO3 isn't irredeemable. The combat is fantastic & the music ain't bad.
Personally i'd like the field style of the Famicom version more (never played that one though, played the psp so far...might get it again on Switch since it's just $20 and the control sticks on the switch are better than the psp pad imo) but would probably never trade the First Departure versions for it only due to FD having more content overall.
PC would be ideal, but having PS4 and Switch options is better than just one platform. That said, I’m now umming and ahhhing about whether I want performance and guaranteed backward compatibility or portability 😂
Agreed, and having the SNES/Super Famicom version with the official translation would've been not only awesome. But something for our retro-gaming community would've loved. Also if there are kids that are playing this PS4/Switch remaster/remake, they may want to play or try out the SNES version out of curiosity.
@@mdo7 Yep. Honestly the remake character sprites look HUGE, items don't appear hidden(all are in chests that I've seen so far, just bought it though because at least it's available in the US without fan translations and emulation, despite the SFC version being 100x better imo, from gameplay, to translation, to character names, to battle system). The gameplay on the remake seems rather difficult, maybe I don't know all the controls like I did for SNES, but I feel like the characters are much harder to control, as are skills because no long distance/short distance skills, overall it just feels like I have much less control. Btw you could swap between characters on the fly in SNES too, so that wasn't anything new.
Jesus christ that would be amazing. I haven't played the first Star Ocean and I stumbled upon this video and I'm debating on the Switch or PS4 version. I do like to see what similarities and differences Star Ocean used from Tales of Phantasia such as Cress and Roddick looked very similar and Millie looks somewhat close to Arche in terms of design for example.

I want to start and say thank you for the detailed video distinguishing each release's difference, strengths and weaknesses and difference via HD balancing, music, translations and such. These videos always help me learn more about the remastered game. I like knowing that even with FDR the original still has a place too based on a variety of factors. My first experience with Star Ocean FD was the PSP remaster (though my first SO game ever was SO3). I still remember getting really excited to be able to play the first game with new art with the standard Tales of style at the time (Symphonia/Abyss specifically) and being able to play the past game HDed. I am really excited for the new version because it's been years since I played an SO game and I forgot a lot about the first since it's been so long. Also happy to know there's customizable choices, like art style and voice acting, and I like the idea of the game being more difficult (SO3 beat me up pretty good too). It seems like there was a lot of work involved to make it a very pleasant experience. My only nitpick is no matter the art style chosen there's the PSP style for animated cutscenes (great style just a little just jarring if someone chooses the new style in FDR but reanimating would be maybe too much?) and the music on the original is better than the remaster (can't explain it but sounds more complex with more depth? I wish there was a way to play the original music with the new remaster) but overall I think that this port is really cool. I'm definitely buying this for the Switch (maybe the PS4 too, I play both systems a lot) though I just wish it had a physical version. This game deserves a physical version.
Star Ocean's fan translation was translated from Japanese by Clyde "Tomato" Mendelin who went on to do Mother 3 and Bahamut Lagoon and two chapters of "Live A Live".

A reboot of the entire series is definitely needed to write off SO3, at least because that ending wasn't the best to introduce especially if they were gonna do a 4 and 5 after it.

@@ciphymasterofmedia9104 I completely disagree. I think the new art looks amazing and is an improvement over the PSP art design. Which makes the whole thing weird cause it clashes with their own art.
@@TheRealAlexFlame it lacks as much emotion that the simpler designs of fd had, that is why I think it's bland. To me it looks modernized and the characters appear unrecognizable. Thank you so much for making this video, I've been dying to find out which version to play, I'm going with the original first, then later play the ps4 one, I love remakes and remasters, but I find that the originals are always the best, unless if there's a lot of glitches in it, keep making videos like this bro, thanks again. 😊

Very informative. Star Ocean is a big blind spot in my RPG knowledge. Sadly, FD doesn’t look like it’s available on the Vita via PSN so it looks like I’ll be waiting until I get a PS4 or Switch before I play it. Thanks for the video!
Wish they'd included the option to switch between the original soundtrack and the remaster. I think the original has a certain charm that the new soundtrack is lacking.
"And a new Japanese dub where the cast is originally from the Super Famicon title." What do u mean to say it is new if it is from the Super Famicon version? Do u mean a new voice over from the same people who voiced the Super Famicon version?
I've been hankering to replay SO2 recently. I'm kinda ticked that SO1 was ported to PS4 both in Japan and North America, but they ported SO2 only in Japan. I'd pay a pretty penny to play an upres-ed SO2 on PS4. As it stands, I'm hunting for copies of Second Evolution or even the original PSX SO2 on eBay. Yay... Damn you, Square, for not bringing SO2's PS4 port to the US.
Currently playing it on the switch AND I'm loving it so far. Feels like an amazing story. Rn I'm on the town you warp after learning what's happening at the beginning. Amazing video as well.
I've never heard about the game. But the original snes artstyle looks dangerously similar to Seiken Densetsu 3. Are those games related, and how do they compare?
Hi great video and I really enjoyed Star ocean the last hope 4K remaster on my ps4 pro, I’m not the biggest JRPG fan I do enjoy them and think the characters and worlds stories combat are amazing, enjoy final fantasy and tales of series tales of arise, vesperia definitive edition, Zestiria, and beseria too. I’m just wondering should I pre order Star ocean the divine force ?! Or wait for a sale. It looks really good and could be a lot of fun. Any advice thanks 😊
Totally missed out on the PSP version because I didn't know about it since I was studying in oddly enough Japan. But now, I can finally experience this game in Japanese. So glad it's fully voiced. Hate reading so much text in a JRPG.
I never played the S-Fam version of Star Ocean. I did play First Departure R on PS4 and really enjoyed it. I loved how they upgraded it to the same visual and combat engine as Star Ocean: Second Story 32-bit version. Since the original version wasn't released in the U.S., I never had the opportunity to play it, so I went with the reboot.
Yay! Perfect description of all three. After playing all the versions, I totally agree that it comes down to preference. Although, FDR has been a total blast. Highly recommend! Hope they do the same for number 2! ❤️ I need Claude and Ashton on the Switch ;)
What I would like to see happen is when Second Evolution R hits? A physical bundle of these two games on one cart/disc for all three current Gen consoles.
Desert Rain But we all know if we get it for the Eastern release, we would get the physical copy of 1 game and a voucher for the online download. Seriously, I don’t know how we couldn’t get FFX and FFX-ii couldn’t be on 1 disc when they manage to do that for the Japan release. The Mega Man and Mega Man X collection did that as well and it was annoying.
Will we ever get second story on switch? I have a feeling we only got first departure due to it originally being on the super famicom. Speaking I had no idea it looked that good for snes. Weirdly I'm tempted to buy FR but play the famicom fan translated *Edit totally want to say thanks for a fantastic video that broke it all down, will start binge watching the rest of your stuff
Seeing as 2nd story is identical to this (the monsters in battle etc), a direct port from the ps1 version to ps4 would be great. As long as they fix the bug in the secret dungeon which corrupts the save.
what a second story remaster? that would be amazing i love that game. i've never really played this game, i have it on my snes mini but i dont think its for me

I actually went out my way to buy it directly from square directly from their EU store "I live in USA" those versions are the ones that visually looks enjoyable to me "my first 2d ff game was ff1 on psp so I like that hand drawn look vs the extra pixel sharp games")
Hey is there any option for a computer version. Because I have more of a chance to play it on the computer going to happen anywhere else bc of small laptop that fits in every where u go, switch doesn't fit in any where.

Thank you so much. I started with the 3D Star Ocean but was curious to play this remaster of the original.
i want to support the franchise so i'll buy the remaster
Fuck that after that Last Hope copy Integrity and Faithlessness I won't support the franchise. Literally the same game.
I'm still gonna support it in hopes that they'll do some reboot of the entire series or a new game that's much better than the last two. A reboot of the entire series is definitely needed to write off SO3, at least because that ending wasn't the best to introduce especially if they were gonna do a 4 and 5 after it.
@@crzymage Not likely. You continuing to support them only tells them you're fine with the mediocrity. Not buying their products tells them you're unhappy. Why do you think these game devs keep pulling the same shit every game? Because you all keep buying them anyways "in hopes they will change"
Welcome to the real world buddy.
Motoi Sakuraba is a legend. I love all his music. Tales of arise ost is a masterpiece too. Just wish it was on itunes
The fact that they didn't redo the cutscenes with the new art is completely baffling to me.
Need an npc that asks 'Seriously what color is your hair and do you or do you not have a tail?!"
We do not need new cutscenes with the bland artstyle of fdr.
I had a few friends agree with me on this. I dont see how the new art is an improvement at all. It doesn't fit with the style of the game at all.
This was very informative and helpful! Awesome video!
Excellent explanation! I remember being blown away by Star Ocean's visuals as a kid. I also remember having a real bitch of a time getting the ROM to work (a problem which apparently hasn't existed in more than a decade :P)
OMG I didn't know about the ZR/R2 sprint! Thank you!
Thanks for this video. I didn't even know there were more games of this series other than Star Ocean the Second Story R. I'm really excited for both games and am looking forward to playing both games
You didnt think it was odd that you believed the game was the only one, even though the name is *Second* Story?
You do know how numbers work, yeah? I'll help:
2 comes after 1. And 3 comes after 2! I know, crazy right?
@KrazzeeKane Sorry but I'm not interested in your rude behavior and temper tantrum
5 plus a gbc spinoff of 2 and an anime for 2
Gonna pick this up in the hopes it helps get me a Star Ocean 2 remaster. Still one of the best rpgs ever made!
your wish has been granted
@@ZenSymphonia certainly was. My first pre order in a long time. Can't wait!
🤔 cant be the only 1 wanting a demake of the other games in this style
No you are not! I'd love to see star ocean 3 and 4 done the same way star ocean second story was.
@@christianprincedebates6740 amen to that
Would be a great way to keep the less flagship series from completely disappearing, and not require an overly bloated budged cranking out 4k ready 3d graphics.
nope.
Nice to hear and see all the stuff added to it, figured it was just a rereleased of the PSP version on the Switch but glad to hear it not.
Nice comparison well made video! subbed👍🏽 Gonna cop and play FDR for the first time before Second Story comes out soon. Last time I played a SO game was SO3 when it came out but I think I got stuck at one point and never finished lol
I'm not really into the newer iterations of Star Ocean but this oldie is looking slightly more up my alley. Nice video.
Bought it the moment it came out. So when do we expect the new Valkyrie Profile Hrist? I’ll die of old age...
just a correction;
Engine used was absed off Star Ocean the Second Story. Second Evolution got made AFTER First Departure remake. :)
Now give us Second Evolution R
I'm hoping we can use Second Story's voices for combat>
@@Clavitz1 Or the Japanese Dub at least.
@@nesoukkefka1741 why not both? :)
@@Clavitz1 Would be perfect ^^
@@Clavitz1 yeah. Dias & indalecio voice is so good
Good to see this, I played the SNES version about 15 years ago but never finished, I think I'll play again now on Switch and finish... thanks for this comparative video!
Came here after the PS Plus added games half october, had 7 other reviews open to see after this one... But got all my questions answered just with this one. Kudos!
Thank you so much for making this video, I've been dying to find out which version to play, I'm going with the original first, then later play the ps4 one, I love remakes and remasters, but I find that the originals are always the best, unless if there's a lot of glitches in it, keep making videos like this bro, thanks again. 😊
Does the Switch version run at 60FPS???
Yes.
Thank you for the video it answered all my questions
Oh wow, didn't even realize.
I remember my brother got me the PSP version, and I spent so much time playing it. Might go out and pick up the new one sometime soon.
Ive only played the SNES version. Great game. I really liked it. This is also my preferred design style.
You earned a sub, simple as that. Thank you.
Now all I need is for the game to become released physically, since it's a good remaster and it's not available in my country
7th seal avatar? nice.
@@EricToTheScionti Sorry. It's from Courage, the Cowardly dog.
Seventh Seal's reaper wasn't as creepy looking.
Thanks a lot for this video and the research you did for the rebalancing ^^.
Can't wait for tomorrow !
4:51 Did Pericci travel to the future to get silicon implants?
The original with a CRT filter is the way to go for me, I just wish it had the cut content...
"And a new Japanese dub where the cast is originally from the Super Famicon title." What do u mean to say it is new if it is from the Super Famicon version? Do u mean a new voice over from the same people who voiced the Super Famicon version?
Played both the PSP and SNES title, didn't realize it was on the Switch. Good video!
This was helpful, thanks!
This video pops up right no time! I wanted to see the differences and here there are, uploaded just three hours ago. Nice timing!
Star Ocean FD remastered reminds me of Star Ocean: The second story, which was my first SO and the best one so far.
paskwawi2007 absolutely.
Currently playing it on the switch AND I'm loving it so far. Feels like an amazing story. Rn I'm on the town you warp after learning what's happening at the beginning. Amazing video as well.
Still waiting for Star ocean 3 remastered on PC with Universe and 4D bugs fixed.
Fully completed a playthrough, including the bonus endgame dungeon + Gabriel, and I never realized there was a Sprint option...
I love comparisons like this. Well done!
I've never heard about the game. But the original snes artstyle looks dangerously similar to Seiken Densetsu 3. Are those games related, and how do they compare?
star ocean was one of the only games to have stereo surround sound on the snes
thats awesome
This is excellent; just what I'm looking for in a "which should you buy" video. I'll be getting this for the PS4. Thank you! :)
Thanks Austin! Based on your in-depth video comparison, I'll be starting with FDR soon. Cheers.
The music gives me goose bumps. It's all about the classics and even if it's remastered, it's still beautiful.
Hey man, I really love your all ports review. I hope you continue this and make more.
BRUH I grew up playing Star Ocean the 2nd Story... literally had no idea this existed! Going to buy on my PS4 as soon as I get home from work!
I just want to thank you for the hard work you put to make these videos, it helped me 2 times before and am sure there are more people like me.
Is there going to be a physical release of this game, or is it digital only?
From what I have seen , digital only.
I hate the digital future. It makes me buy less games.
@Final Fantasy I like buying physical for Switch, because I love that they´ve gone back to game carts/cards. It feels so nostalgic.
With the announcement of SO2R coming, can we expect a similar review?
I never played the S-Fam version of Star Ocean. I did play First Departure R on PS4 and really enjoyed it. I loved how they upgraded it to the same visual and combat engine as Star Ocean: Second Story 32-bit version. Since the original version wasn't released in the U.S., I never had the opportunity to play it, so I went with the reboot.
A fair and thorough comparison - that's refreshing! Nice job & thanks.
Yay! Perfect description of all three. After playing all the versions, I totally agree that it comes down to preference. Although, FDR has been a total blast. Highly recommend! Hope they do the same for number 2! ❤️ I need Claude and Ashton on the Switch ;)
Subbed, great in depth analysis!
R is definitely the best version since it has the original snes character designs and original snes audio and Japanese voices
Oh my fucking god, so first departure R's difficulty spikes are because they fucking made XP rewards smaller?!
what a fantastic review, good job
Will we ever get second story on switch? I have a feeling we only got first departure due to it originally being on the super famicom. Speaking I had no idea it looked that good for snes. Weirdly I'm tempted to buy FR but play the famicom fan translated
*Edit totally want to say thanks for a fantastic video that broke it all down, will start binge watching the rest of your stuff
Can't wait to play this one but what I'm craving is a remake or remaster of Second Story.
Seeing as 2nd story is identical to this (the monsters in battle etc), a direct port from the ps1 version to ps4 would be great. As long as they fix the bug in the secret dungeon which corrupts the save.
@@yggdrasil7942
I'd rather see a remaster of the PSP version of Second Story. I found it better.
@@SeanUCF there's a PSP version of 2nd story? I only played it on the psx
@@yggdrasil7942
Yeah its called Second Evolution.
was debating whether to get this for switch or PS4, thanks for the detailed reviews of both now I don't have to do research 😊 very informative
I’m waiting for The Second Story
Saaaame
what a second story remaster? that would be amazing i love that game.
i've never really played this game, i have it on my snes mini but i dont think its for me
Second story is my 2nd favorite JRPG of all time. I never played the First Departure. Now I will!
2:39 this sounds EXACTLY like a golden sun battle theme, honestly wouldn't be surprised if motoi sakuraba composed it
edit: guess what, it literally was him, lol
Fantastic breakdown. Really well done.
thanks! due to this video i'll probably be picking up FDR
Truly I thank you for your work, I've learned about new jrpg's because of you (I'm 34) and I've made the jump this week to jump on a bunch of them today cause of the TGS sales. (Also your distaste for ff5 &6 old pc port is hilarious.
Snes emulator and psp emulator
This was a really helpful video.🤠👌🏻👌🏻
Very informative video! Man I would love an official localization of the Super Famicom version, I'd even take a port to Japanese NSO SNES. Nice to know about the difficulty bump, too. I played the PSP version way back when that came out and I swear I wasn't getting slaughtered as badly then as I am now... Difficulty options would have been nice 😖
