    Thank you for the response! I actually ordered the hoopnotica one less than twenty minutes after commenting. I've been blown away by how quickly it gets easier. Been incorporating years of belly dancing into it and it feels amazing. Can't do it around my shoulders to save my life, but I'm hoping a lighter hoop will help. Again, thank you lady!

    I'd have to disagree with not using one of those cheap hula hoops from the department stores. Yeah, of course, they suck. I'm not denying that by any means. But I started out with one of those crappy ones. Wrapped it up with tape to make it a bit heavier, and made it my own. I wouldn't reccomend going out and buying, either. But, if there's one around the house that your little sister never uses or can only spare a lil' bit of cash at that moment, go ahead. I've been hula hooping for the past 3 years, and have definitely upgraded with my hula hoops (I finally got an LED huly for Xmas). But I think everyone should know that there's nothing wrong with using those crappy ones. You can practice many different tricks with it still, even if it is "too big" or "too small" for you. It's too light, whatever. You can easily teach yourself isolations which is actually the first trick I learned how to do. But when you get the cash, splurge on a nice polypro...or make a huly yourself! : )

      That's a really great tip! I want to start hulahoop but don't really have the money to buy a professional one, plus I don't even know if I'm going to take this hobbie seriously... after hearing in the video about the cheap ones I got quite upset 😓 so good to know that cheap ones can be useful too

    • @LilMizzLae
      @LilMizzLae 4 года назад

      Agreed. I got my first one that was "too small" from dollar tree ($1) with the beads inside (you might want to empty it then retape because the sound gets annoying IMO). I just wanted to test it out since I wasn't sure how much time I'd spend on getting better at this new hobby. I've been enjoying it a lot more after practicing isos and lassos on the small 27" hoop from DT so I went to Target for an "upgrade." Got a shiny multicolor 36ish inch hoop for $6.99 and have gotten a lot better at my isos. This hoop tubing isn't perfectly circular and has a bit of an oval shape which makes gripping it a little tricky in addition to the shiny, slippery tape that's on it. So you can definitely use them to try it out but I def look forward to my next upgrade whether it's a bigger cheaper hoop to try shoulder hooping or a hoop with a different more professional material

    Besides the fact that you are adorable - that info/video was amazing. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that info. It's so crazy how much info you should really get straight before buying your first hoop. I was given a hand me down hoop in practically perfect shape that is probably an inch think and 42 inches in diameter and I thought it was way to big so I bought one on etsy for $29 at 37" diameter with 3/4 OD HDPE pipe. Now after seeing this I realize I have 2 great hoops to start with (and somewhere in between both is perfect for my 5 foot tall (slightly overweight body) and really all I need to do is just start flippin hooping. A zillion thumbs up to you.

    So helpful! Beginner hooper and I bought a 42in hoop and it came a couple inches above my belly button and I thought this was to big so I took a piece out and it reached my Belly button. But I could not keep it up at all. But after watching this I realized , since I'm a beginner, it was totes ok for it to be so big. I added the extra piece back on and i was able to keep it up for a bit on my first try! Thanks!

    I bought 160psi, given that I have literally tried to hoop my whole life and NEVER could. Got that bad boy home, lined her up and hauled it out in my first attempt. I giggled like a freakin school girl. No tricks given the cold outside, but once the weather warms up and I'm more confident, I'm going to try that Hoopnautica one you have. Love it. :)

    It's 34'' from the ground up, and doesn't come anywhere near my waist. It is super light and flexible. My first hoop (which was the same one) I actually ruined from doing too fast of a lasso. It warped itself out of shape! =0) I can do the same things with a hoop which is 26 1/2''. My Mom recently bought one off of Etsy that is 160 PSI, and 42 inches. It seems soo huge and slow!
    Thanks you so much for taking the time to reply, I just love your videos! Keep up the awesome hooping.

    if you're 35" and it's an additional 1 or 2 inches for the beginner then I'd suggest a 36" or 37". You can try a 37". If you want a bigger hoop that you can also share with others later on then you can get a 38". I know the avg hoop ppl like is a 36" but since it's your 1st hoop it might be different for you. I think either is fine. Make sure it's PE material (beginners use it) unless you want a lighter hoop in which case get a PVC and 3/4 thick 100 PSI

    heavier hoops means slower rotation so you can pick up tricks faster if you have more time to prepare for the trick ( the slower rotation) but they might say lighter because it doesn't bruise since it's lighter. heavier is for learning basics tricks (waist, hips thighs,shoulders, chest, corckscrews, halo, weaving, lift up & down) which are extremely important to learn before anything else. i'd recommend the big one heavy one and then the lighter one for later on

    You give wonderful advice. I am 5' 1" and 110 pounds. I was looking into getting a 38" hoop (which is right above my belly button about an inch). You said you recommend 100 psi because 160 is quite heavy. I can hoop well around my waist and walk while hooping as well, I just want to begin tricks. Since you have been hooping for a while now, what brand/type (collapsible/non-collapsible/etc.) do you PERSONALLY recommend. Also, I am looking to dance hoop, not just around the waist hoop.

  • @gemgen101
    @gemgen101  12 лет назад

    if you can do the duck out (so hoop on your waist and then, at the right moment, bend down from the waist so the hoop goes off your body and towards ur hand so when you stand back up the hoop is off ur waist & outside for off body stuff) then you're ready for a ploy pro. poly pros are so light & fast that you have to know how to do a trick properly or else it could smack you in the face. I'd recommend a 100 36" PSI. i use that still to practice new tricks anyway. it's may 1 of my fav hoops too.

    i have a 36" 100 PSI hoop that was 3/4 inch thickness which was pretty light, lighter than my other hoops for reason. If you want to move faster then get a size smaller with PSI hoop. If you want to move more as in bigger movements then get a bigger hoop . If you what to go fast and get a good work out and move a lot (good cardio) then get a poly pro. They're very fast because they are light and so they react quickly meaning you're right into your next move in no time

    Great! So, dumped the water out of one, and added a battery. The hoop was so light! It also seemed kind of unresponsive, but the uneven weight didn't really bother me. With 4 affixed, it went better, and 8 also went well. I kept one of my wave hoops with water in it, and compared as I added batteries. With 8 AA batteries on the hoop it was a little bit heavier then with the water in it, and no batteries. I noticed that the water filled hoop seemed more "flowing", and corkscrews were easier.

    since hooping isn't as popular as yoga, they might not have classes in your area. I live in a pretty busy state and there aren't many classes (but i learned from youtube and hoopnotica DVDs anyway). there is a website called Meetup though. type in your city and look up classes through there. If nothing else, there should still be flow jams or workshops (so people with poi, hoops, juggling, flow wands, staffs, & S blades can attend and share with each other)

    depends on what your goal is. If it is to fire hoop, LED hoop, or get better no matter what hoop you use, get a normal 100PSI 3/4 hoop that is 36". That is an intermediate hoop. You can get away doing fast or double hooping with the light hoops so you can go to poly pro but you really need to practice with a light big normal hoop since it'll help prepare u for other hoop things you want to try. Water hoops are only good for so long.They don't work that well with body rolls & it's slower workout

  • @gemgen101

    collapsible and non-collapsible are good either way. if you don't get collapsible then (if u have a soccer mom van like our family does) the hoops fit perfectly around the seat as if the chair is the stick in a ring toss game so even if its non collapsible it can still travel with you. 100 psi i recommend and if you are comfrotable with walking while hooping then you can get a 37 or a 36. i should've gotten a 40 but got a 38 and it was fine.

I have a 42 inch 3/4 PSI hoop. I got the hang of hooping really quickly and I want to learn isolations and off body tricks. it means pounds per square inch of water the type of tubing can hold. Tubing cames in many different types of plastic material (PP/poly pro, PE, PVC, , HDPE, LHDPE) so the PSI will feel different for each material but it's all the same concept

  • @rachellavelle4020

    I'm 13, 5'2'' and weigh around 90 pounds. I've been hooping when I can for a little under a month. I can walk backwards/forwards and run while waist hooping, turn in both directions, do basic dance moves, and can do the corkscrew up and down. The hoop I have now is a Walmart Wave Hoop that has water in it. I know I need to get a real hoop, but I'm not sure whether or not I should get one for an intermediate hopper, or a beginner hooper. Any suggestions?

  • @gemgen101
    @gemgen101  11 лет назад

    no worries. Its still better than water hoops, sanded hoops, or weighted hoops. Just watch the hair and if something comes apart & they don't accept returns then super glue it because aside from it yanking hair, rattling, & being wonky ( i personally didn't mind the last one) it's a decent hoop. this again is the hoopnotica travel hoops. I'm assuming they've changed the way they make it because they change it by the time i bought it a year ago. It's due for an upgrade :D

  • @gemgen101
    @gemgen101  12 лет назад

    its probably b/c its 40". by the time most get a poly pro or a LED they've used regular tubing (which is heavier) and gradually gone down sizes. So it might be the size that is making it heavy, otherwise poly pros are one of the lightest hoop materials out there. Grip tape you can get online at various hooping sites, i usually buy hoops with tape already on there. & yep :D I've used the Hoopnotica DVDs. they're very helpful for beginner stuff.Good to have youtube AND a DVD w/ troubleshooting

    how big is the hoop from the ground up? and how light is it? wave hoops can be confusing since they're heavy but at the same time they're not. If i were you, i'd get 1 somewhat beginner hoop so 38", 37". beginner is like 39"-42". That way you'll always have a practice hoop for a beginner. This will help you get more friends to start hooping on the beginner hoop. If you can control the weight & you realize you've already built muscle memory then you can get a beginner intermediate (36", 35", 34")

    The water in the hoop will also cause to be off balance, you will probably notice that it seems fine and all of a sudden there is a sudden shift of weight as the water swishes around to the other side. This is the main problem with water hoops.

    i have videos on how to waist hoop and also how to walk while hooping so you can always practice walking and hooping on the waist while it's cold. What also helped me become better at moving and my waist was "Hula Hoop Dance Tutorial: Warm Ups with Anah Reichenbach (Part One)". You can literally dance with your hoop without even touching it. u don't HAVE to but i recommend it because most people feel they dont have the right weight in their 1st or even 4th hoop so they go heavier or lighter, give up, or get an LED which is also a big no-no (at least in my opinion since most beginners tend to give up on the hard LEDs anyway). it also help you know what hoopers are like in person. thats the only thing i've been close to as far as hoopers learning in almost 2 years since there R no classes close by me either. but U can also live w/o it

    Right now I have a 160 PSi hoop at 38" and I've found it to be both too large and too heavy for me. I actually began learning on one of the Walmart hoops and I was able to learn tricks like the Elevator, and Vortex on it. I then moved to the hoop I have now. But now I'd like to purchase another hoop, but far lighter and a bit smaller. I'm just worried about getting a hoop to small and light for my skill level. Would you recommend just moving to a 100 PSi 36" hoop or to a Poly-Pro hoop?

    @gemgen101 Yeah. PSI hoops and Astral and a couple other places are pricey. If you're looking not to spend too much go straight on over to MoodHoops. They're amazingly priced (start at $69 before shipping) and they have some great designs. Plus they're quick since most designs are premade. I've got one and love it. My first one I got was custom and I had to wait like 7 or 8 weeks for it. My MoodHoop I got within about a week. Another I'd recommend for a basic hoop (one color) is SuperHooper.

      Hey +musicminer02 ! love music? WHat is your favorite?
      and to answer your question, hula hooping is really easy so anyone any age can learn. Because it is a low impact activity, it is easy to take up, even if you are pregnant or coming back from surgery. DIfferent sizes and weights are going to do different things. If you want to practice is secret, you can always get a Trinitystar collapsible hoop or a Unityhoops collapsible hoop. I have a video on different types of hula hoops as well. Hope they help and I hope you enjoy hooping!

    Are weighted hoops the same as water filled hoops? I have a water filled one and am wondering if thats not a good one to practice with

    @atg07LOKA its probably because your natural direction is just eaiser to learn with and going the other way not only means you have to train your body to move unlike its use to but also because the hoop is simply smaller so you have to learn to adjust to the different feeling in the body a lot faster. A bigger hoop means you can adjust to reversing slower. the hoop in this video goes to a 32" too and i've used the 32" for reversing (practicing this week) and, 4 me, its harder for those reasons

    I'm 5'5 and plus size (size 18-20) and I want to try hooping. I'm a total beginner, except for being able to do basic waist hooping in middle school with a large hoop (I remember it had water in it or something and was fairly heavy) for 10 plus minutes. I feel like having a little weight to it will make it easier, but not too heavy. What is the best hoop that I should buy? Or where should I look to purchase one online?

    Could I make a hoop, or would it not be the same as just buying one?

    So it's better to have a heavier hoop i'm a beginner? Cus i've been looking at hoops online, and i can't really decide between two hoops.
    They're basically the same, only one is 1.2 kg, and the other is 1.5 kg. But it says that the heavier hoop is for level two hoopers, and the lighter one is for beginners. What should i do now?

    I found this shop on Etsy, called "DanceHoops" that makes hoops you can shrink, kind of like Hoopnotica Breakaways, only they don't have the push buttons. So maybe I could get a hoop that is a beginner size, that shrinks to 36''. That way my friends can use it in the beginner size. Now just ONE more question! How much grip tape? She makes hoops that have all grip tape, some with just one strip, and some with 2 or more. How much is too much?

    as requested there is a hooping video of me with a glow in the dark hoop on my homepage now. the video was super dark and you couldn't see anything so i adjusted it so you at least see an outline of what I'm doing but unfortunately the hoop wasn't glowing as much. trust me though, when the glow tape is charged its is honestly a nightlight when u turn the lights out b/c its so bright. I live in a dorm now so the room lights are fluorescent but y can use sun or simply a bright light to charge it

    What brand do you recommend? Because I'm having the hardest time trying to find a hoop that's somewhat weighted.

      Danielle Ortiz beginner hoops of 100PSI 3/4 and PE material are good beginner hoops if you want to eventually use them for tricks. but size also has an indication of how much momentum you're going to have to force for tricks to work and how heavy the hoop is overall. As soon as the hoop is moving, it is not as heavy, but the heavier it is, the harder it will be on your wrist for any non-beginner, off-body move. If you are bruising and want to dance faster without hurting yourself, it's time for a smaller hoop. Featherhoops on etsy is good. hoopmamas is good too, just a mass production of fancy tape on tubing you can find at your basic hardware store for a hoop you can make at your own home. I mention featherhoops because they use a different material of tubing and i'm not sure even they know what it is.

    weighted will feel the same weight all around. I've seen people practice with water hoops but they have problems with certain tricks so they give up on the trick or continue to have problems with the trick and don't add as much style. So when they go to a normal hoop, it's faster and they feel lost. Try to invest in a hoop. ETSY has cheap hoops so for ur beginner get a naked hoop except for grip tape (get grip tape on it).

    I'm confused with the psi too. Hoops I'm looking to buy are stating their weight in grams :/ what is 100 psi in grams does anyone know please? I can't find a conversion calculator on line for this.

      CharlieBee psi is presure per square inch so like im not sure how a collapsible hoops could hold air so idk

      For PSI explanation I wrote one under Milica Trajkovic's question. The psi is relative to the material as well, as the same outer diameter , inner diameter tube will handle different psi depending on if it's vinyl, pvc, rubber.....

    I just received Trim Hoop 3B 3 lb from Amazon. This hula hoop dimension is 17.7 x 8.7 x 3.2 inches ; 3.1 pounds, also its material was Rubber foam / Plastic pipe.
    I'm totally a beginning hula hooper and I feel it is too heavy for me. What should I do now?

    Confused by "PSI" for weight. All the hoops I am looking at online mention pounds, from 1 to 5 pounds, and not one mentions PSI. Please clarify. I'm just starting out, though I learned to hula hoop in the 80's with an old-fashioned hoop that was weighted with crunchy material. I a man of about 5'9" and 195 pounds.

    i'm so confused as to what psi means
    i'm looking into diying my hoop and i figured the only thing that mattered when doing that is the height and thickness of the hoop along with the tape.

      psi means "pounds per square inch". The tubing used for hoops is actually tubing that is normally used for hoses carrying liquids or gases under pressure. PSI is a measure of how much pressure per unit of area a material can withstand. The place you would normally see this measure in an everyday situation is in your car, i.e. the pressure you pump your car tires up to. Car tires are basically just tubes. The higher the PSI, the stronger the material has to be to withstand the pressure, so the thicker the wall of the tubing will be and the heavier the tubing gets. Therefore, if you are diying, it is important to know the psi (or in other therms, the wall thickness) of the tubing because it definitely affects the overall weight of the hoop.
