Wonderful video. I'm an off/on hooper for, gosh, 6 or 7 years and your explanation of the process is very astitute. I rember spending hours watching a certain vid and pausing and just trying again. That "high" of when you finally get a trick is better than (almost) anything. Just wanted to say great job. Happy hooping!
I have been learning to hoop for about five months now. I set myself the challenge for two reasons. One because I think it looks great and I am so envious when I see people doing it, the other because I am the clumsiest person ever and I thought these things were impossible to me. I'm learning fast (for me) and I'm really pleased with my progress. If I can do this anyone can. Keep up the good work, you are an inspiration.
I like using a wall with a lot of windows or a sliding door to see myself, works great at night when I actually feel like hooping. Thanks for the advice!
I can't believe anyone had anything negative to say about this video. You seem like such a nice person and I appreciate all your helpful tips. I don't care what level of hooping a person is on. It doesn't give them the right to be rude. Stay positive, Gemgen, and keep posting videos.
all I have to say is yes! I'm rooting for you girl. Just as motivated as I was and now I've been hooping for a year and 4 months. I saw the title for this and was like wtf. Then I watched it and saw that you weren't trying to show short cuts but to really get people inspired 3
Just wanted to say kudos to you lil momma!! Been keeping track of you and your videos for six months now. I just had my year hoopiversary as well. Its amazing to see someone with such passion for the hoop and want to share it with others!!
Thanks for making such a comprehensive video! Love how you're so engaged and giving back to the community, not to mention your beautiful hooping in and of itself. Looking forward to your next progress video!
I am an brand new hooper- This is great and I love your other videos as well. they are so helpful and your positiveness is very inspiring! :) thank you and keep putting up videos please
when i started i was in a tiny dorm room so i'd watch the hoopnotica DVDs, try to get the movement down in my head before going outside and then i'd practice outside on the side of the building so if the hoop fell it'd hit the wall or the bush. So you can go outside and practice in a corner and just watch the DVDs to get the movement down before going outside. otherwise you can go to a public park. practicing in public also helps out a TON with confidence and performance :D hope that helped :D
Your so inspirational! You have such great advice! I know I've learned quite a few tricks or two from your monthly uploads. Tricks I have never seen tutorials or even names for! lol keep up the awesome work hoop ur heart out!
I'm just starting to learn & I'm following your advice/videos! You're a great example to listen to & not to mention you are super pretty! Keep up the great work :)
I started hooping in this week and faced with the space problem. I cannot go out because its winter here and my home is not suitable for it at all. I had been thinking about it till I saw this video. You gave me an idea that I can practice in my school's gym center. Plus, thanks for this inspiring and couraging talk! Good Hooping:)
I've been hooping for fun for about three years but am just starting to learn tricks. This was a great video, really made me feel better about my skills. P.s. you are so gorgeous!
Despite my seriously wanting to avoid recording myself, I did tape some of my practice today. It really was worth it. So much of the stuff I thought was clumsy and needed serious work actually looked awesome. I was blown away that my super clumsy Rising Sun actually looked wicked cool! Yee-freakin-haw!
i go at specific times because on weekdays till 8 they have classes in that room so i go from 9 or 10pm-12am (when they close). But weekends they don't have classes in there but they close earlier so i go whenever during the day. I use to go almost every day last semester but this year i go only twice at max since i don't live on campus anymore and don't have a parking pass
I am glad I found your helpful videos. I have a silly question, but I have to ask. You suggested posting videos so you can see your improvement. If you post private videos can a person trust that they will stay private? I am older and I WANT NO ONE to ever see them! It would be good, however, to critique myself and see my own progress. Thanks!
Hello! Do you think you could make a tutorial on how to weave your hands in and out of the hoop? I don't think I can find any videos (or maybe cause I don't know the name of the trick), and I'd really appreciate it if you could do one! Thank you! :-)
what kind of linear are you talking about? i'm not great at isolations ALTHOUGH there is this great guy n youtube who does a lot of ISOs. i forget his name but if you look up ISO or ISO hooping it should come up. he usually does things with small hoops but it should help a great deal with linear isolations. i know theres the cat eye and another i don't know the name to and the anti spin and flick but thats all. hope that helped!
Hey girl, love your videos! You're one of the many hoopers who have inspired me to make progress videos. I have a question -- I recently found out that my campus gym offers a giant room to use when there aren't classes in it, just like yours! Do you usually carry hoops around with you and go when you can or do you make specific trips to the gym with your hoops and music/recording stuff only? Thanks!
Hey you have inspired me so much, I have been hooping since April and have learned a lot but still no hoop flow, I bought the hoop optical DVDs because you recommended them and also have been taking a hoop optical certified class on sudsy afternoons. I've even been recording myself sending it to friends/family and posting it on my you tube and Facebook. You should take a look and see if you can give me some tips. Also I don't have a lot of space in my townhouse not a ton of space to hoop :/
I am 10 years old i have been hooping for 3 years and i have a competition in 7 days but i am really upset because i have a broken finger so i am just going to hide it but i dont really think i should what do you think
KitKat66 you don't need to worry about hiding it. no one is going to know it's hurt anyway, they're just going to think it's part of the performance costume. and if they do think you're hurt, then you'll look fierce and mighty because you're sucking up the pain and putting a performance on for people. If your finger hurts, its a great time to either slower your pace so your finger can gently catch the tricks without much force trauma OR to try hula hooping in the other direction or just with the other hand :D
np, but yes, if its on private only you can see it. If you want to share it only with friends & family then put it on "unlisted" which will only play for people who have the link meaning you are in control of sending the link to whoever you want to see it. Otherwise, no one can see it. I have a few unlisted videos myself so i know it works (videos of family events & whatnot)
Can you do a tutorial on linear isolation plz? I cant get it to save my life. There aren't any really good tutorials on it either. Everyone just does the isopops. Thnx.
2 words of advice 1) Take the good with the bad. Appreciate the good comments so you can ignore the bad ones. For the bad think "well, that's THEIR opinion"or "i'm just happy that I can do it.Those haters are probably jealous they can't do it" 2nd advice is actually what I see a lot in hooping videos with lots of dislikes & that is having an LED as a beginner &/or dressing sexy just to show off yourself & not you dancing with the hoop. Stay away from those 2 and people will appreciate and love it
i think its the tiger lily hoop on moodhoops :) i was really considering that one before deciding on my rainbow hoop. mood hoops are really nice, so worth the money!
There are A LOT of hoopers on youtube that demonstrate flow in some of their videos, the trick is to watch their videos and see how they feel the music. Really though, flow is how you interpret the music and how your body and hoop in turn responds to it. @ 1 point, every hooper experiences a few monents of flow even if they are trying to do all tricks so look for those moments in the videos. otherwise the hoopers off the top of my head are jiminhwang, wantonamara, katiebug0376, hoopalicious,
i've been hooping for about 3 weeks and filmed myself today. it wasn't nearly as horrifying as i thought it would be. my 10 year old is picking up the tricks faster than i am, but we're having a blast.
I've been hooping since last summer (after admiring for about 5 years now) and I'm a sloooooow learner. I've been favoring songs in 3/4 "waltz" time which seems to give me the best "flow." I've been having a hard time getting that to move into standard time or other similar but I look like I'm wayy off. Advice?
When's you hoopiversary? It must be sometime around mine which is 10th October!

Dear Gemgen101! Thanks for the tutorial! Please could you tell me from which material are the hoops made from? Here in Perú I can't find them and my hoops are from water tube, but they haven't lasted long:( Any stores that work with Latin America or Peru? i appreciate your help:)
haha i misread and thought you said "glass" and i thought "well ouch but i guess we'd just call that sad." haha yeah , when you're limited on space, you look for any danceable surface such as short length carpet. better than concrete :D
was watching this video again and my favorite part is how awk I am at the end and how poorly my makeup looks. well, when you live with 3 other girls, you rush to do your videos and make up before they get home and ask why you have a ton of make up on and video equipment around you :D
Ari s haha dont worry, i thrive on being random. well i dont thrive but i like being random. I got it at a low discount store in So Cal near LA :D not in la, near it
i found it on devianart but I'm sure you can get it at moodhoopsDOTcom. i think it might be the firefly. I know I've seen a pattern like it on their site.
if you have a lot of questions feel free to message me so i can respond to all of them. For now, with chest hooping, its just about practice and patience: make a plan the next time you do a trick and if it doesn't work make a new plan. Look in the mirror and even record yourself to see what might be the problem. Remember all 4 pushes. MANY hoopers agree that chest hooping does take the longest to learn. It took me 1-2months to get the move. So it will take a long time but keep the 3 Ps in mind.
Ms_ DaniCalifornia i just saw this comment. youtube layout has been weird lately. anywhoo... maybe you need a different hoop. the first hoop I got was a naked 28" that never felt good to hoop with, and 28 was what I was considering a somewhat intermediate hoop --since you normally start with a 29 - 42"--! 28" was hevy for me, although good fro super basic bgeinner stuff that you really do need. I tried a travel, plastic hoop from hoopnotica which pulled out my hair because of the screws that kept coming loose. Then I found a light hoop on esty from featherhoops where the plastic material was lighter than most PSIs and the tape didn't weigh the whole thing down. If you're hoop is bruisng you and it's a pain to hoop with when you want to just go faster and not hurt yourself, then you go lighter material or smaller in size or both. Later, size depends on how fast you want to hoop dance and sometimes the songs that play that you want to dance to (example: large hoop in a crowded festival is probably not going to have a lot of hoop time)
Hi Gem, I just posted a video response and would love to know what you think. You were actually one of the first videos I found and you totally inspired me to post my own (even before you posted this one). I'm already thinking about my 6 month video!! xX
