On July 31, 2022.... I did this same thing. I had between 1/4 to 1/2 tank of regular, wanted to get more gas and mistakenly grabbed the diesel pump. Added $50 dollars worth of Diesel. Was about 20 mins from home and had my family in the car and was already around 8:30 at night. The regular that was in the tank mixed with the diesel and the gasoline that was in the fuel line allowed the car to start. We have many speed bumps and at every speed bump the vehicle staggered a bit but in time I got home. The last few hundred yards from my gate it started to stagger more but made it to the driveway. Turned of the car and left it till morning. I had a friend help me take out the fuel pump connection behind the back seat in the trunk and pumped out all the diesel mixed fuel with a small hose. I got out about 9 gallons or more of mixed fuel. Drained and cleaned out the tank with a sponge. Got everyting hooked back up and added fresh gasoline. Took about 2 cranks before it started and it also smoked for a while to burn the fuel mix in the fuel line. Worked perfect after adding more fuel. Kia optima 2002 (LOL) working back as new as a 2022.

help me please, my foolish sister put 10 bucks worth of diesel in my 2006 pontiac pursuit, she realised the mistake and never started the engine but got the car toed to a garage over night they were closed so the car is there ,im wondering if i can fix this problem on my own without involving the garage costs, was thinking i could just fill up the tank with gas and hope it dilutes the diesel enough and just drive away is this ok ? what do you think i should do?

Having the shop drain the tank of all diesel would of course be the safest option. If you just put gasoline on top of the diesel in the tank, I would worry about it running poorly and possibly clogging the catalytic converters. These is a possibility that it will run fine and have no I'll effects but that is totally up to you but I would advise against it

@@MidwesternGarage thank you for your quick reply appreciate it because i need to figure this out by tomorrow to decide what to do before the garage guy calls so i can tell him either to work on it or leave it alone, i do not want to think about what they might end up doing or how complicated the job may get and how costly or if they run me into other bs like having to clear more hoses or the pump etc i think i will juts risk it, the tank was merely empty before she put in about 6 litres of diesel so i will juts get someone to drive me to the gas station to fill up my emergency plastic tank which might hold about a gallon, ill do a few trips and dilute the gallon of diesel with about 3 or 4 gallons of gas then quickly drive to the gas station and top it off, ill follow this guys example and hope for the best

I know this is late to the party, but if you are running only about 25% mix diesel in your tank your car should run sluggish, but enough to get you places and enough to burn it all out of you top off with premium afterward.
My sister put right over 4 gallons of Diesel in my truck as a thank you for letting her borrow it, the truck takes about 16 gallons of gas and was idling when she did this, oh her surprise when it started staggering as soon as she hoped back on the driver's seat, she quickly shut it off and called me.
Oh my surprise when I saw where she was parked, and I knew exactly what she had done, she told me she didn't know and that she apologized.
I looked at the pump 4.3 gallons on an almost full tank.
I get in and a turned the key, to my surprise it turned over and it cranked on!! with a very rough idle, I basically had to keep my foot applying slight pressure to the gas pedal to keep it from shutting off, so I "idled" over to the gas pump and pumped the last little bit it needed for a fill up with premium, the idle was still rough, but my thinking was If it makes it down to 3/4 tank I'll refill with premium again.
it did and I did, that fill up evened the idle a little and I kept driving it until it was empty, the next fill-up was regular and no more issues came up from it.
At low concentrations it won't destroy your engine although it would make it run a bit dirty, and maybe smokey.

My daughter did this to an old vehicle and I was quoted 1800$ for Pep Boys to replace the fuel tank and fuel pump. We sold the car for scrap metal because it wasn’t worth 1800$ in repairs. It ran fine before.

It would be hard to figure out the ratio to dilute it correctly. I would not recommend it.

    • @MidwesternGarage

It really depends on the size of the fuel tank, the age of the vehicle and the compression ratio. Of course, I'd have to recommend draining the tank to ensure no damage to the engine or fuel system, but if it still runs ok and you monitor it closely, that's your call to drive it or not.
