For non-catalytic engines it's been a practice of some - ever since leaded fuel went away from normal pumps I'd guess - to put a little diesel in with the gasoline fill-up as an upper-cylinder / valve lubricant. I've done this with motorcycles, older carburetor vehicles, and a fuel-injected Jeep Wrangler (inline six) that someone took the catalytic off of. They all ran great with that little bit of lube in there.

I remember when I was a kid my dad experimented with adding diesel to the gasoline in his f350 with a carbed 460. He came up with 1gallon of diesel to 10 gallons of gasoline and it actually increased the fuel economy a little and left a white coating in the pipes. Any more than that he got soot. All bets are off on a fuel injected vehicle though.

All bets are NOT off with a fuel injected vehicle! I've used it several times in several engines inluding a modified Corvette LS1. I used a far smaller ratio, like 1cup diesel to 10 gallons of gas, and had only benefits, no cat issues, soot or anything. It essentially raised the octane level and stopped some minor pinging I'd been having even with high-octane gas. High compression engine was tuned for more HP and had the timing a bit too far advanced, hence the need for more than 'premium'. Essentially high-octane is harder to ignite (or in my Corvette's case 'preignite' due to pressing the limits of timing to compression ratio). Diesel is also harder to ignite, so the effects are much the same as higher octane. It's also an upper-cylinder lubricant, similar to Lucas gas treatment. It likely won't benefit lower performance engines that are running well, just like higher octane fuel doesn't. It's a misconception that higher-octane is more 'premium', other than sometimes have more cleaning additives than 'regular'. High octane is only harder to ignite (therefore reducing preignition in vehicles that require it- typically performance engines.) Like you said, you don't want to run the ratios you mentioned in a fuel injected car, too hard to burn completely (cleanly). But in the right ratios depending on your engines tune, works great as an octane booster!

Back to the Chrysler tech thing.. we have both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles as you would know. So we do get both sides of the equation a lot more frequently than we probably should.
Gas in Diesel vehicles doesn't seem to bother them much. We have been very lucky and only ever had to flush the fuel system out.
Diesel in gas vehicles usually goes the same way but on 2 instances.. we have actually seen 2 engines that began to Crack the crown of the pistons as a result of trying to burn the Diesel fuel.

My 6-year old son wanted to "help" my wife pump gas into our '95 Mazda Millennia. The car ran for 150 miles until reaching their destination. Next day, the car would not start. It was eventually diagnosed with bad fuel, tank drained, and refilled with gas. Car ran a little rough until the rest of the bad gas was out of the system. I contacted the out-of-town station about the bad gas, and after looking at the receipt, was told diesel had been pumped, maybe 1/3 to 1/2 tank.
Unfortunately, the diesel nozle was the same size as gas.

Yep the diesel treatments like Hot Shot and Cetane booster...is actually a volotile fuel like gasoline.
He is absolutely correct. Unlike octane booster which makes gas ignite SLOWER, the cetane booster helps diesel ignite FASTER. Gasoline is the most economical common sense way to do so.
There have been many cars through history which had diesel and gas tanks and used gasoline mixed in at startup then switched to full diesel.

I know a guy who adds a little diesel to the tank when he fuels up his GTO. He says it raises the octant enough to stop his high compression engine from pinging. I don't remember how much he puts in (per gallon), but I know he's being doing it since he rebuilt the engine back in 2012.

I commented earlier, but I ran it in several modern day gas cars, including a modified (and ohh so fast) C5 Corvette (likely the same engine as your friend's, depending on his year) for the same reason. I ran about a cup per 15 gallons of premium gas. Because it was tuned, I could see on the computer that it allowed me to add more timing before any potential preignition. It also cleans and lubricates things better. I don't think it does much good for cars that don't need high octane, though.

The reason diesel is bad in gas, is that eventually the gas will separate out and sit on top of the diesel. leaving the pump sucking up a majority of diesel and a little bit of gas, so if it does run (poorly) it will do major damage with detonation. we had a Technician rev up an older engine after flushing the system out, but forgot to flush the rail so there was still diesel in the system, and it threw a piston through the block.

Great video man! I've seen this happen a few times at my job both ways around - gas in a diesel and diesel in a gas. It's always a pain when they put gas in a diesel because in addition to removing all the bad fuel we need to change all the filters. And they take forever to get started again. I've never seen engine damage result from this, but that's not to say it can't happen. I have seen catalytic converters go bad on gas vehicles not long after something like this though.

In Europe Diesel pumps are marked black and Gasoline is always green - at least for the last 20+ years since we switched to unleaded. Gasoline pumps also have a much smaller spigot, so Diesel pump will not fit into the tank opening. Putting Gasoline in a Diesel is a common thing though. Modern Diesel cars seem to stop soon enough not to cause damage and the mistake costs about 4x what it costs to pump a tank of gas (1x for the gas you've put in there, 1x for the filters, 1x for service and of course you still have to fill the tank with Diesel in the end)

      @alexku8452 4 года назад

@@wallaceeverett3927 That is some trick I still know, and actually the only exception that allows putting gasoline into a Diesel.
As you mentioned the Diesel starts gelling below certain temperatures, after a time it really gets some kind of nasty waxy substance.
Adding at most 10 % of gasoline would actually change lower the gelling temperature and kind of disssolve the wax.
At least here in Europe, they change between what they calll summer Diesel and winter Diesel in time. Winter Diesel has additives in it that prevent Gelling down to temperatures around either -20 °C or -30 °C, can´t remember actually. I guess its the same in any part of the world that may reach critical temperatures these days.
By the way, you still can use this trick today, if you have a Diesel that gets only low miles and you put in fresh Diesel last time during the summer, just put in some Gasoline, depending on how much Diesel you have left in the tank.
Alternative method: Use a torch or make a fire beneath the engine to preheat... Lets call it the "russian way". Not sure if anything not beeing an Ural or whatever will live through or not burst into flames. With modern cars you might get a heap of burning plastic way before the engine heats up...

Eric, I delivered fuels for many years, both gasoline and diesel. The tanks were never washed out. However, we did load gas into the container that had diesel to cut the diesel. But then you may be talking about 3 gallons leftover mixed with 3600 gallons of gasoline.
Now deliver was extremely important. You had to be sure you loaded diesel only in a diesel tank at the stations, and the same with gasoline. 500 gallons of diesel into a 50,000 gallon tank wouldn't hurt anything much, except the driver's paycheck (which he no longer got from our company).
Now going the other direction, if gasoline was delivered into a diesel storage tank and then pumped into a diesel vehicle: NEW ENGINE. Gasoline is too volatile for use in a diesel engine. It will wreck the injectors, preheat chambers, and the fuel pump. Rings tend to crack or break off. And then the oil gets diluted seriously.

What happened, the tanker driver put approximately 1,400 gallons gasoline, in the diesel tank, all 5 trucks were completely drained, and the fuel system's flushed, refilled with diesel, I found No Damage, But it was caught quickly, them the 5,000 gallon diesel tank had to be completely drained and refilled. Then when I was 18 years old, I took 5 gallons of diesel fuel and poured it in my 1962 Mercury Comet inline 6cyl. Carburated engine, it smoked like Hell
but it ran !!!, But when I shut it off and let it cool down, it wouldn't start but it puffed out blue smoke !!!
So I had to drain the tank, blow out the line and carburetor then it started again and ran fine after the cylinders cleared of diesel fuel, "Dumb Kid Stuff" 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

I thought it was the marvel mystery I would use in each tank, until I could barely keep the motor running after one fill up at the same Fred Meyer gas station I had gone to for years. White smoke all the time, chugging and missing like no tomorrow. I dumped a can of sea foam and it slightly helped, but main symptoms of misfiring and white smoke engine chugging out still happening. Alternative recommendation for if you're in a situtation where you can't get towed, can't drain the tank, or for any other reason are incapable of doing the correct thing to do (drain your tank and put the proper fuel back in your car). I'm talking dire straights here, out of options. If you've put diesel in a gas engine, it will not start on diesel, but if started on gasoline, the heat from gasoline combustion will help burn the diesel. If the compression ratio of the engine is low enough it will not ignite the diesel until the gasoline is burning. It is not good for your catalytic converter, O2 sensors, EGR, turbo (if equipped), fuel pump, filters, or injectors (there is more wax and contaminant in diesel than gasoline, and the unburned byproducts will find it's way to other things). That is to say, if you absolutely can not properly service the situation, if you've started your gasoline car and its running on a diesel gas mix, keep the engine running drive around gently at lower RPMs(if you hear knocking sounds its bad, reduce engine speed and load). Knocking sounds mean the diesel is combusting before the spark plug is commanding fuel ignition. Return to a fuel station, leave your engine running otherwise it will not start again on the diesel mix, keep adding gasoline to the tank until you've gotten more than half the capacity of the tank back in. This is not considered a safe practice either. When you get back to a location where you can service the vehicle, inspect and replace components.

AliasSLH each pump in the uk has a nozzle for each type of fuel (usually) so we get basic gasoline called "unleaded" (95 RON), then we have "superunleaded" (98 RON) and if you go to shell then you also get two choices of diesel standard "low sulfur" and then v power if you want the better lubricants, higher cetane and better detergents.

Chemist here, some things i want to point out.
Diesel and petrol have quite different physical properties, but the chemical properties are quite similar. The viscocity in diesel stems from the longer hydrocarbon chains, which also results in a higher boiling point than petrol. They are perfectly miscible because they are both very non-polar. They also have very little way of reacting with one-another because they should (in theory) have little to no reactive functional groups.
According to a video of Project Farm, washing through a petrol system that was first added diesel with petrol should dilute the diesel enough to get the engine running (lower viscocity). Probably as you said because the clogging of the fuel filter and possibly injector?
Other way around (adding petrol to diesel engine) should be a fun experiment though. Wonder what would happen.

I did it because my dad did it. It may have worked. I did it with a used 1964 Chevy pick-up with the 235 6 cylinder. I put 400,000 miles on it. I then sold it to a friend who drove it for 10 years, or so, and continued the diesel thing. He sold it just before he went on to the other plane. It had sat for 10 years at that point. The guy who bought brought a used battery, a fuel pump, and a rebuilt carb. It started on the third crank, ran rough for a few seconds and settled down. Then he took all four wheels off, came back with new rubber and drove away. I don't know whether it was the diesel or just how tough and forgiving those old trucks are.

My former manager would put our waste non-conductive, non-flammable silicon transformer oil in our diesel truck. I think it ran a couple of months before the engine blew up.

They put in new pumps at a local station. Kerosene was now on the same side as diesel. Tired, no coffee, didn't pay attention. Filled up one of my tanks with Kerosene before I noticed. Filled other with diesel, called ford. And they said it wasn't that big of a deal, but it was best to siphon it or drain it.

I disagree, from my experience, with gasoline in a Diesel engine. However, depends on the ratio.
A couple of gallons in a 100-200 gallon tank and it’s a great injector cleaner…..even gives you a little extra short term torque. However, large diesel tanks often vent to atmosphere and the unused gas will evaporate within a few hours.
The blue 2 stroke oil also works great in a modern Diesel engine

I pumped it out the old diesel. I have sludge left in my diesel truck tank. A guy said to put enough gas in to cover the sludge & it would dissolve the sludge & then drain the stuff out. Would this work?

Lol 😂 injector cleaner ! No , I suggest you pull an injector from your car and have a look at how tiny the holes are , if you have clogged injectors you need to replace them ,… no such thing as refurbishing injectors either … manufacturers recommend replacing injectors every two years ! No one does and everyone believes they can be cleaned ! All lies

Yes. In fact, in a 57 hemi Many many times i have experienced just that, I put in. As much as 1.5 gallons to 30. gallon tank of unleaded. and there is extra torque easily felt when you step in the throttle and the engine idles as smooth as it ever has, if not more. The other added benefit was. doing this. when I was going to be traveling down the highway, I gained 1.2 actual miles per gallon. which offset the expense of that gallon of diesel. I generally only use it in gasoline when it's cheaper. than it is at the pump now, but Diesel is a lubricant. These clowns don't even understand the difference. They think it's like mixing oil and water. I. never met so many clues. People. So afraid with zero understanding I'm glad I was born 55 years ago.

Gas in a diesel engine will wreck the fuel pump first which operates at extremely high pressures. The pump actually relies on the lubricity of diesel fuel to function properly. With insufficient lubrication, you can guess what happens. Quite common here in the Philippines since there are several popular utility vehicles and pick-ups that come with both diesel and gas engine variants with the only distinction being a sticker on the filler cap.

Diesel is actually a form of oil. Oil fired furnaces/boilers actually burn diesel - it's just labeled differently and has no road tax added. They dye it red so that if you are ever caught with it in a vehicle, they know it was not meant to be used on the road and you get a pretty hefty fine.
