- Today, we build probably my largest and most ambitious build of all time: A flying, nuclear aircraft carrier! This one took me genuinely upwards of 10 hours to build and fits into my turbine alt history world! I do hope everyone appreciated the video, and I hope to see you all in the next one!
Reminder: Flyout is not available for purchase, and I can only access the game through a pre-release tester key. You will not be able to purchase flyout until it releases for early access.

the Federation would definitely want something like this to bolster their airship fleet
The Pacific Federation of Project Wingman right?
If so I somewhat disagree. I feel saturation is more of the Federation's tactic than a large superweapon plane. I think they'd go for faster and more well armed airships not too dissimilar from what they have now rather than one make or break airship like this.
Predictable

Damn, id love the idea of something like this being in a fictional futuristic conflict, it seems completely impractical unless you want to patrol landlocked countries. Its overkill and i love it.

It could be the future of air travel for all we know. the plane would be able to almost fly 24/7 365 days of the year along a well planned flight path around the world, making pitstops at various airports and dropping passengers off with either smaller aircraft or 'drop pods'.
I have a bit of a challenge for you: put some kind of ditch skids on the parasite fighters. Like you said, they wouldn't need landing gear; but I'd imagine that the pilots would appreciate the option to land in case the big boi gets taken out or is otherwise not an option.
or if there is water ditching may be an option
@@MeowserLJCI would love to see how u plan to recover this behemoth in the aftermath ofa belly landing
If for some reason or another, they can’t go back to the mothership. The pilots would want a safe way to land on a runway without damaging the airframe to put it back into service.
You could just eject but good challenge
@@timmy6890 ejection is always a risky option for pilot. yes, you usually survive but there is a chance for serious injuries,
I love how he’s just calmly talking about the width of the wings meanwhile you can see the shockwave from the drop tanks literally washing over everything within 2 hundred kilometres.

there was a real life flying aircraft carrier, the USS Akron. It carried 1 biplane, but it is still technically one of the only flying aircraft carriers ever built.
The akron and macon could carry up to 5 biplanes if I remember. 4 in the internal hangar and 1 on the trapeze bar.
and the japeneese where working on one too i think (not 100% sure)
What about the Soviet TB-3 bomber modified to carry 2 I-16 fighters?
@@heiliger_otterthey had a submersible aircraft carrier ready, idk about an airborne one
This comment goes to show that you must do your homework before showing off your knowledge
I wish the gravity of earth was low enough for flying aircraft carriers to exist efficiently.
They probably wouldn't be able to fly efficiently anyway since a lower gravity would mean thinner air
Try doing this on terraformed mars
You want high gravity so the air is super dense
No you do not
But bone density…

*I can only imagine the feeling of walking out of your house thinking it’s still night only to see this blocking out the sun*
Okay, now that thing gives me huge Project Wingman airships vibe. Maybe only two things different: 1. Most of them have box-wing. 2. They use harbors and water as landing-takeoff zone. Oh, and also, they use basically magic engines on "cordium" instead of nuclear powered
Cordium is explicitly said to be some high energy fissile material that naturally surfaced with the yellowstone eruption from the earths molten core. They do use nuclear engines.
Yeah, cordium is uranium with a little less radioation, and a lot more O R A N G E.
But yeah this looks almost exactly like the Sky Battleship model from PW
This level of complexity is something I dream of from things like Simpleplanes,
Can't wait for the release of this game
I've seen stuff like this in Simpleplanes, it's insane how some people can somehow get around the limitations of these kinds of games in creative ways
For the parasite aircraft SHOULD have some type of landing gear, whether to be moved about the flying hanger (depending on the in flight systems), but more importantly, in the case of an emergency landing. They doesn’t have to be much, just enough to safely land the pilot and preferably not damage a runway if they have to divert (something like a glider’s gear; two stationary wheels or one and a skid plate with maybe wing tip wheels as well).
Another advantage of putting gear on the parasite fighters would be that the carrier could have a reduced takeoff run, perhaps being able to takeoff from a normal-length runway without JATO. It would takeoff as empty as possible (meaning no parasite fighters in the bays, no fuel, munitions, other supplies, etc.) and all that would be flown up to it after it's already in the air. Because of the nuclear reactors, it *does* have basically infinite loiter time, after all.
Because of how risky takeoff and landing are (especially for an aircraft of this size), it would make sense for it to stay in the air for many months or perhaps years at a time, similar to actual aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines. They too require resupply, but they don't always go back to port to do this, instead relying on auxiliary ships to resupply them. I imagine that aircraft with similar roles may be designed and employed in the upkeep of the carrier, making the mid-air resupply immediately after takeoff a lot less unusual.
@@erictheepic5019 This would likely be better as a float-plane.
Given the size of the aircraft overall, I think the cockpit would essentially be two decks tall all by itself....
I imagine a large airship like this would be best suited for taking off from water similar to how an airship from project wingman would as seen in the one mission where you assault the naval base in Rawaki (hawaii). But I imagine flyout also doesn't have that kind of system yet, but this is still an impressive build.
Water produces even more friction then the landing gear so I think that won't be an option
Salt Flats maybe the best option for this. Given the size of take offs and landings as well as surrounding elevations. Although the salt may~ damage the engines.
@@boykevanderborst682Is it possible to use hydrofoils as landing gear to reduce friction?
The Aigaion from ace combat 6 takes off and lands by the sea just like the airships.
The maintenance required to maintain something like this after each sortie would be EXCRUCIATING 😂 such a cool concept though, maintenance nightmare fuel, but cool!!
But how often would it actually need to land? Fuel isn't an issue, and it can be resupplied on the go, so would it come down to how often it requires a full overhaul?
You know? This is probably the very BEST gameplay I've ever seen in my entire life. Watching a GAME and LEARNING Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering?? ABSOLUTELY AMAZING 😊 Subbed Obviously.
I love the idea in the Yukikaze books: the flying carriers are too big to ever land/takeoff, so they're built in orbit and drop into the atmosphere where they fly for I think their entire service lives.
That makes the most sense. You have the small aircraft stationed in the ship in orbit, then have them descend for a bombing run or whatever, then return back.
Love the idea of the mothership with the super powerful radar communicating with its fleet of aircraft who cant fit as powerful radars on themselves. Great design, looks amazing
I thought this would go well with your alt history, then I read the description, I am so glad you decided to continue with it! :)
19:56 was that a shockwave? If yes that was BIGGGG
i think that might've been the drop tanks exploding on impact with the ground
yeah from the drop tanks, but a shockwave that big could only be from something nuclear
Damn Gleipnir
@@optionalcoast7478 it was 6000 tons of explosives, close to smaller nukes
He dropped the drop tanks at 19:29. They must have been packed with TNT. I feel sorry for anyone on the ground.
You should recreate those ridiculous photoshopped planes you see in clickbaity youtube thumbnails
I could see some problems with the rotating radar above, being too close to the fuselage and being blocked by a lot of elements... everything else, it's wonderful!
could maybe have 1 above and below, with AI meshing the two radars into 1 view essentially?
This is like Lockheed’s proposed CL-1201, in fact you mentioned in the video it was between the Arsenal Bird’s size and the Lockheed proposal I mentioned earlier.
Super-sized aircraft would likely actually be flying boats - calm day is all they'd need to have a massive, very well-supporting landing strip. This'd still need either pontoons or similar structures to sit in the water, but once it kicks into high enough speed it'd get grabbed by the ground air effect boosting it out of the water.
Also, that AWACS dish would probably sit way further forward or be on a taller leg to avoid the prop noise on screen, similar to how the E-2 Hawkeye has to mount its dish quite high to avoid prop noise.
Funny design, though, and you put quite a lot of thought into it.
Damn this thing looks so great even though its impractical af, but it just looks so cool soaring through the air.
That plane is awesome! Great work!
Here's an idea for a loadout, not that you asked but I thought it'd be cool:
4 Squadrons of 12 Multi-Role Turboprop craft, similar to your last video in the series
2 Squadrons of 12 Rocket-powered interceptor craft
2 Squadrons of 4 smaller scale AWACS craft
2 Squadrons of 4 smaller scale transports for supplies, crew, and repairs.
76 smaller craft, 8 larger craft. Maybe even have a compliment of 8 cruise missiles on it at that point.
Maybe it could be a family, with specialized variants, like awac/soad/ew, interceptor, multirole, cargo/air refuel
It’d also need a healthy supply of defenses too, flares, chaff, Anti-radiation missiles, and PDCs to shoot down enemy missiles, it could even fit a vertical launch system for also shooting down missiles.
@@jackvearncombe9892 I don't think countermeasures would work in such a huge plane, also evasive maneuvers wouldn't be an option, I think. I think you'd have to go with active measures, or be outside the enemy's range, or have AWACS/interceptors work like the f14 was supposed to, with the aim54
Damn Belkan witchcraft... Trigger, destroy those propellers! Stonehenge is about to fire!

Honestly this is something that would fit so perfectly in the fallout universe. Everything from the nuclear turbines, the absurdly large size, and even the fact that this thing would be so loud it’s takeoff could make anyone within a half mile radius temporarily deaf. This feels like something right up the Enclave’s alley.

I watch this and I just can’t help but think how many people gloss over how smart you are! Like this is absolutely insane to me that you can even comprehend this stuff nevermind applying that to a project 100 fold
“Oh, you know, there’s only two people in the cockpit controlling this thing, the pilot and the copilot. We don’t need anyone else to help move this hunk o’ junk. We got engineers who are engihere to make sure the plane works, but controlling it? Yeah, just two dudes”
8:46 Kind of looks like turboprop F4 Phantoms slapped onto it lol
8:20 more like a closed beta/ alpha. Early access means people can buy into it before 1.0 normally. I am very excited for this and will buy it as soon as it becomes available.
Awesome video man. I'd love to see you pull some maneuvers with all of your creations! Maybe put them through some barrel rolls, some high G turns, or just some abuse that an aircraft might need to deal with. Love your vids as is, awesome work :DD
I love how the turbine says caution. Like, “yeah, be a little careful around our Chernobyl of an engine, you could get a very minor case of obliterated by radiation”
This is so dope🔥
It looks like the type of overengineered titan that would come out of the Soviet Union 😂❤ I'm definitely subbing
Didn’t the Soviet’s have a flying carrier in WW2? Albeit a bit smaller…
I love your videos man keep it up ❤
I feel relieved that I’m not the only one who thinks about these kinds of aircraft. Quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclips channels.
This is actually pretty incredible. Congratulations on a successful build.
You should do a series where you remake jet fighters from memory I think that would be pretty cool
What an incredible build!! The shape of the fuselage looks very nice, and I love how thick the wing roots are, gives the whole thing a general sense of beastliness. The twin boom tail is also a nice choice for this kind of aircraft, as it does provide a little more lift and control to an extent. The cockpit design is awesome too, it gives a sheer sense of scale for the rest of the aircraft since you know there’s people inside the cockpit, and it looks so small by comparison.
I like that you mentioned games like SimplePlanes and KSP, while Flyout’s graphics do seem to be better than those two, I’d argue that there is a little more creative freedom to be had with SimplePlanes and KSP, seeing how, just from watching you create this and how your PC struggled to render it, larger builds and/or more complex builds don’t seem to sit as well with Flyout. Which is a shame really, but considering it’s still early access and not available to the public yet, I’m sure the devs will get right to optimization and overall better performance with larger creations.
Being a SimplePlanes player myself, I’ll be one of the first to admit that the flight model of SP is not the most realistic, but that certainly doesn’t take away from the fun of the game, you can make some batshit ridiculous stuff there.
Speaking of flying aircraft carriers, I myself have built one as well in SP, with a wingspan of 6,250ft, and a weight of 20 million lbs unloaded, 30 million fully loaded. It doubles as an aerial attack carrier as well, fitted with hundreds of AA Missile batteries, AA Gun Turrets, RailCannons, and even small bomb bays. It is a testament to how ridiculous SimplePlanes can get.
If you ever plan on building another flying aircraft carrier, I’d recommend building it to take off from and land on water, just because it provides your aircraft with so that more space to move, and it’s generally easier to land as well.
Happy flying! From a fellow flight enthusiast and flying aircraft carrier connoisseur.
i saw this thing on the steam page for flyout and it really showed me the extent this game can handle. really hyped lol

you had me worried for a second but reading the title that says a "Flying" aircraft put my mind at ease. i just hate swimming aircraft you know.
A small quibble about the AWACs function:
Given how low the radome is, you're going to get blind-spots from the vertical stabilisers, particularly the ones on the wings, and the hull itself )meaning that you'd have a minimum detection range on the radar, particularly when dealing with low-flying targets). However, given how massive the aircraft is, you could circumvent this by installing the radar system in pods on the wing tips instead of the central disc, or depending on how advanced your electronics are, even flat-panel electronically scanning arrays like in the AEGIS system installed on the hull.
Like I said, it's a fairly minor detail, but it was something I noticed.
This is amazing! Well done!
This is the stuff I dream about, I love it
My aunt was a technician for many aircraft, and she mentioned a few times that she worked with giant nuclear aircrafts, the only issue with them being how heavy they were.
"Tarkhan, radar signature detected 200nm away from our fleet's position, orders?"
"Likely a strike group, if we detected them, they know we're here. All aircraft and remaining ships under 20 hr long repairs, we have no choice. Launch 2 nuclear KH-15PNs, Deus in Nobis..."
Meanwhile, the radar signature:
im in love with the build, this is like the 6th time rewatching this
Awesome build, thanks for publishing. One quibble, that radar disc needs to be on stilts to clear the horizon of the plane itself.
God: makes birb, hollow-boned, small, armed with some claws, a pointy beak, and a bad attitude.
Humans:
I like how the basic planform and size is almost identical to the XB-0 from AC Zero (twin boom and all), kinda neat to know the Hresvelgr is a theoretically feasible design.
This video is a mix between screpmechanic episodes and lesson of science, Great content!
The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery.
"What, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!" "I DONT KNOW" "Dont shoot it, it would irradiate the city." "Ac-130 Go investigate, communicate with the pilot. we need this thing to stop"
The Flying Aircraft Carrier: Just chillin’.
That one SAM: How ya doin’ 😉
Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.
Honestly I can totally see concepts like this evolving and taking off more in real life. Instead of manned fighters that waste a lot of space though, it would be really easy to do this with some sort of AI drone swarm on a much smaller scale.
Flying aircraft carriers actually existed. Though back in the day they were known as “blimps” or “zeppelins”. They had fighters that could be launched underneath, and even redocked! There’s also plane launched fighters, but they could obviously only hold a few at most, and couldn’t redock.
There was also a plan for an aircraft launching submarine from Japan way back in WW2.
What a fun design! You'd really need some wheels on those wings too.
People take different roads seeking fulfilment and happiness. Just because theyre not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.

All those turboprops! This would be the loudest man-made vehicle ever. Louder than the Saturn V.
The Soviets did actually fly a nuclear powered jet as a proof of concept (and they heard the Americans were working on it). They solved the weight issue by using minimal shielding.
The flight crew didn't have great long term health outcomes.
It would be cool if you could create a primarily awacs variant of this where the parasitic fighter bays are replaces with equipment to work a giant radar system mounted on the aircraft.
I asked for this, thank you. This is wicked.
This game looks so cool! I can't wait until it comes out
The constant "I want it to take off from normal runways" and operate in normal airports... has twice the wingspan of an A380 and 80%+ of airports can't even handle an A380 as it is hahahaha... I love the build tho! Fun to watch!

The moment I saw this I thought of the Lockheed CL-1201 flying carrier concept.
May I make a suggestion? Just in case you’re doing any continued world-building; The ‘parasite’ fighters, might I recommend they mount the APG-66 (or whatever it would be called in your carrier’s universe). It’s small, cheap, and was developed in the early 70s. Provides basic cannon fire control, missile control, and some light BVR/all-WX capabilities.
Cheers, love your videos!

Fighter recovery in larger craft in the BattleTech universe is done with nets, at least in emergencies and when you don’t have time for a controlled dock.
Granted that’s for outside atmosphere, but I always thought the idea was hilarious and interesting and probably a little terrifying for the pilots.
That's one huge radar signature and a great way to lose 100 aircraft worth a billion dollars to a stinger. Very fun to watch.
I say it’s radar signature would probably be the size of the Su57’s signature, but also it does not necessarily get that close like on the border and then release its aircraft’s it could also just fly extremely high and have anti air defences and it’s most likely made by the USA (what other countries military spending is more then a small country’s GDP) so it will most definitely have anti air or some ability to shot down enemy missiles
