- Man walks along the railroad track
He's goin' some place, there's no turnin' back
The Highway Patrol chopper comin' up over the ridge
Man sleeps by a campfire under the bridge
The shelter line stretchin' around the corner
Welcome to the New World Order
Families sleepin' in their cars out in the Southwest
No job, no home, no peace, no rest, no rest
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad
He pulls his prayer book out of a sleepin' bag
The preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
He's waitin' for the time when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
With a one way ticket to the promised land
With a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Lookin' for a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the cities' aqueducts
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad
Solo
Now Tom Said; "Ma, whenever ya see a cop beatin' a guy
Wherever a hungry new born baby cries
Wherever there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me ma
I'll be there
Wherever somebody's srtugglin' for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helpin' hand
Wherever somebody is strugglin' to be free
Look in their eyes ma,
You'll see me
And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody is to where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of Tom Joad

The original version of this song was okay... certainly the lyrics. Then I heard RATM's version and absolutely loved it. They added so much energy and passion to the song. But then Tom Morello joined Bruce on this song and something magic happened. I keep playing this over and over. From the beginning to end, I don't want to miss a single word or note, and Morello's guitar solo is one of the best I have ever seen and heard. This should be required listening for everyone, everywhere.
The fact that I get ads halfway through this song reserves someone a respite in hell, to disrupt this masterpiece.
Tom's guitar playing is out of this world. Poor Jack Smith can't stand others opinion or good music.
Here after Tom talking about it on Stern.
I could be overstating but I believe this is one of the best live performances of all time.
Lived in a house with 5 Boarders. One man slept prior under a highway overpass in bone chilling weather. I myself prior to my father's journey to Jesus, slept in my car in 32 temp. These guys do it every nite! Pray for them!!
This is one of the few moments where EVERYTHING in a performance is just......perfection.
"Millions of people out of work, high times on wall street and hard time on main street!" Easy words coming from a Rock Superstar with a net worth of over 500 Million!
Sad thing is, it's here it's getting worse!
I am glad Bruce is still playing, but please, please, can we have Rage back together during 2020? We need anger more than any time since the 1960s.
My dad used to show this performance to all of his friends. I miss you so much dad
That guitar solo gave me the biggest eargasm I've had in my entire life.
Came back in 2020.
Morello is a beast on that guitar!!! Never get tired of this song. CLASSIC.
Bruce's solo doesn't get enough credit. It's so fucking good!!! Toms last one was obviously god like but Bruce really shined
This is my favourite version of The Ghost Of Tom Joad.
Tom killed this. One of the most badass guitar solos I’ve seen
when tom started to do that overhead grip thing, i was in tears.

I love how Tom Morello adds the sound of sirens. It accentuates that in an unjust society the fight for your rights will be treated as a crime.
