55 year old African American man. First time hearing this in 2024. Where have I been!!! Brought me to tears.
Tom Joad has been a staple of Tom Morello/Rage Against the Machine shows forever. But this was the only tour Spirngsteen inluded it in his playlist. And this Anaheim show - which I attended for wildly different reasons - was the first one Tom Morello joined the E Street Band for. They have since repeated the collab several times since. It's a Socialist Dream performance!
Such a great performance, you should check his Stayin' alive with Tom Morello in Australia 2014 too!
It's so great. Lyrical, feels, and definitely guitar/playing ability showcased
Yup me too at 64 😂
31 over here. Its never too late my friends.
I was THERE that night! We had NO idea that we were about to get our heads blown away. Just one of the most amazing musical moments in my life. The SONG! The Vocal DUET! That guitar solo FINALE! Everybody in that place was blown away. And no one knew it was coming.
Vocal duet/harmony blew me away!
Awesome performance!
The people who attended that concert never imagine how lucky the were to see Tom and Bruce together playing one of the best live performances
I was there! I it was 2009 or 2010 in Anaheim. I was living in San Diego at the time. This version just blew me away!
I recently learned that Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, and Murphy's Law once played a show together in NYC. I thought to myself that if ever a time machine was invented, that would be my first visit.
After seeing this, that show has become #2.
My mom made me go with to see Bruce at Wrigley Field chicago illinois back in like 2010 or 11 maybe idk. Little did I know Tom Morellp was there. Also EDDIE Vedder

April 7 & 8, 2008 in Anaheim at the Honda Center. I was at those shows for the Magic Tour. It was incredible. These 2 shows need to be archive live releases
No one, and I mean no one ever revealed the heart and soul of John Steinbeck than these
men in such a compassionate and inspirational manner!!!

Just finished the book. Whoa.. Didn't make me a communist though, but damn.
Again, my comments have nothing to do with politics! They come from a purely spiritual perspective! I am commenting on the “Talent” of Steinbeck and these artists.@@walluvalkama3927
'Nebraska' and 'Ghost of Tom Joad' are often viewed as oddities of Bruce's discography. Honestly, I think they are the best of it.
Bruce has said, in the book about the making of Nebraska, that he believes that this will be the album he'll be remembered for. Made solo, in his bedroom, on amateur equipment.
Yesss!! 👍👍❤🇨🇭
100000% agree
They are a bit sleepy, though. One of my favorite reviews said, "The Ghost of Tom Joad makes Nebraska look like James Brown at the Apollo."
We were lucky enough to see the Ghost of Tom Joad show at the Oakdale in Wallingford Connecticut back in 96.
Great Show. Small venue, had great seats, a night to remember.
The is one of the greatest moments in rock and roll history.
Brought to tears....
NEVER in my Life have I heard the quitar played like that.

This is out of this world. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. Tom’s guitar is an extension of himself. You cannot separate the two
I'm only on viewing 2.
Viewing 1, I was just totally blown away.
Morello basically drops the bulls on parade solo, mid solo! Nothing better than when you find a new favourite youtube vid is there?
Tom morello is one of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen, technique, sound, heart, soul, expressiveness. You can tell he loves his craft and believes deeply in the messages of his music. And what an incredible collaboration with Bruce. Who would have thought. This version is one of my favorite songs/performances now

I love how Bruce looks truly surprised and deeply pleased with Tom's awesome riffs, he is all smiles, and you can see him yell "Go!"
If there is a better guitar solo played by a human I haven’t heard it. Skill and passion on display.
Bruce is an Icon in his own right...but I will also say....Tom Morello is BY FAR...one of if not THE BEST and INNOVATIVE guitarist since THE GREAT JIMMY HENDRIX....if u don't believe it ask Mary...his mom...or the other THOUSANDS !....of fans.
He unselfishly works with other musicians....known or not well known....He brings a special LIGHT to their music.....THANK YOU TOM MORRELLO !.....
Morello destroys Hendrix. By a mile
Yes He does....but remember Who OPENED THE DOORWAY to Wonderland man...
I have seen Springsteen with Morello. Unbelievable. Bruce and Tom are a magic mix.

Steve ayres!sono d'accordo con te! 😅😘😘💘

Just mindblowingly bonkers
Uh on that I gotta solidly disagree lol
I lived in my car for quite a while and always felt that the poetry of music was a salvation. Thank you, Bruce and Tom Morello for this rendition of a great song that fills my heart with hope.
♥
I' ve just finished the Grapes of Wrath, where the main character is Tom Joad and first thing I did after I've closed the book, I put up this video...and touching the glory of being a human alive, I almost died...it broke my heart in thousand pieces and them took them and put them together in the lap of the loving divine. I just went through one of the most intense moments of my crazy life
Exactly the same here. I remembered the song title but only after reading Grapes of Wrath, I revisited this song. American music and literature at its best.
This is one of the coolest fucking things I've ever seen. Tom Morello doesn't compromise his style for ANYBODY.
The ghost of Steinbeck and Guthrie still roams the land.
Did you see the huge smile on Bruce's face as he watched Tom go off on that epic of epic guitar solos. I think Tom blew Bruce's mind. Believe this was at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca.
Saw it live. That's as good as it gets. After first couple songs, Bruce says, "We're out for blood tonite."
The song tells a timely story, and both Bruce and Tom make this soulful for those that are fighting the good fight .

Bruce Springsteen is one of my dads childhood idols, Tom Morello is one of mine. I've known of this song for ages but i usually listen to the RATM version whenever i listen to it. My god, how have i missed this? There's something special about this performance, Bruce's raw emotion in his voice and Tom's raw emotion in his guitar, it's a perfect mix. That solo from Tom had my laughing at how talented he is and crying for how beautiful it is at the same time. Absolutely incredible.
I couldn't agree more. The combination of this song and the current pandemic inspired this song: ruclips.net/video/JDAYxAdWIR4/видео.html
This whole performance is legendary. Historic. Especially for Tom Morello, who gave a Hendrix-at-Woodstock-level performance and made me a fan.
And, of course, Springsteen's heartbreaking, gut wrenching writing and intense performance.
You know, now that I think about it, what makes Morello so great here is that he matches Springsteen's intensity. It's like they're both performing with life-or-death consequences hanging in the balance.
@@stevensendor7216 yeah i completely agree. Tom's solo here is honestly one of the best live solos ever in my opinion, absolutely incredible performance
"В душах людей наливаются и зреют гроздья гнева - тяжелые гроздья, и дозревать им теперь уже недолго.

Beautifully written. I concur. It’s pure excellence. Period.
Was Tom having a seizure?
Tom is a woefully underrated player. That solo was absolutely from the depths of his soul and just memorizing. Even Bruce was blown away.
These 2 make an odd pairing of styles absolutely magical.
Underrated? He is widely considered one of the greatest of all time.
Perfection in live music, gut wrenching perfection. Steinbeck would be proud of this masterful song, describing a prodigal son-like Tom Joad leading his family through despair into the promised land of the times while at the same time fighting his demons and finding peace in true selflessness.
Thank you for the Steinbeck shoutout.
You are exactly correct, in my semi- educated opinion.
Steinbeck and Bruce would have been best friends IMO. They are an extension of each other. Both geniuses!
This is the actual anthem for this generation!
Powerful. Especially performed by two men who understand and believe the words
zorsgsruuf
This is the near-perfect expression of the Struggle (capital S). And I constantly think about this song as I walk and drive through my beautiful, flawed, tattered hometown, Minneapolis. And as I see the noble comrades that feel like
"a fella ain't got a soul of his own, but on'y a piece of a big one..."
Every time I listen to this, only 2 words come to mind; "Holy shit!" 🧡
My thoughts exactly lol
I love this, I grew up on the Rage version but got really into Springsteen the last few years, this is so cool, and I think more people need to read Steinbeck again, feels relevant, I also love it when Tom sings.
The way Tom makes his guitar cry reflects how sad this song is.
People just want a job or helping ✋
Morello’s solo is stunning, amazing, non human. I’m as awestruck as I was the first time each time I watch it. He reaches beyond any guitarist I’ve ever seen. It’s other worldly.
Agreed
Yep 👍
Absolutely! One other incredible guitarist I would have loved to seen Bruce collaborate with is Rory Gallagher....in my dreams now unfortunately ☹️

Oh yes.. that's some guitar playing at the highest possible grandmaster level.. stunning really is the word to describe it :)
I'm ashamed of myself for never seeing this before. This is nothing short of genius work from two legends. Simply fantastic performance! Tom's "Bulls on Parade" scratching made me love this version even more.
good to see you have caught up
Easy... no hard feelings.
Don't be ashamed; just be glad. I told my kids when we watched this together: Springsteen shows himself to be a pretty good lead guitarist, and he is an undying legend. Morello shows himaelf to be an other-worldly lead guitarist, and he is, relatively speaking, unknown. Our self-worth comes from our close associates, our co-workers, but most importantly, ourselves, and not from the outside world which neither knows us nor understands us.
@@johnthorne4093 I agree 100% that Springsteen is an excellent guitarist, and he could have shown more of his chops, but he let Morello absolutely slay the solo and the audience. I especially loved the "Bulls on Parade" scratching. This is my favorite version of one of my favorite songs.
As a DJ, I was blown away by the scratching sounds he was making with that guitar, so dope!
Tom's guitar almost got me crying it was damn good. It managed to put the biggest smile on my face.
Absolutely; it’s a pretty short walk from tears to a smile.
I wonder if they realized just how amazing this performance was turning out to be...incredible.
Short answer is no. If you ever listen to an interview where Tom talks about it he was convinced it was going to be terrible because he just couldn't get it in the key Bruce wanted it in.
They went on to play several more venues around the world 🌎👌🤩🤟🤟🤟
When they came to Australia Tom stepped in for SVZ who was in Europe filming lilyhammer. Such an amazing concert, they played Ghost of Tom Joad.... one of the best shows I've ever seen.

He said that Bruce reassured him that he would do just fine. He did way more than fine. Awesome performance!

If I was ever to run for office (I won't!), I'd ask Bruce permission to open my rallies with this song- it encapsulates everything I stand for! Just now seeing this in 2024. Tom Morello is a badass. I’ve always loved Rage.
Bruce is the Boss, always against the grain. Morello is simply a beast who refuses to be regular and is always a part of a movement. Amazing
The BOSS is John Steinbeck..
Well said!
XCEPT FOR HIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH OBAMA.
Only a musical genius could take this original 1995 acoustic song, and turn it into such a great rocker with Tom Morello!!!
Yeah, never mind actual musical genius like Max Richter's dazzling re-harmonisation of Vivaldi' universally significant 'For Seasons' or Bach's 3 versions of his own Sinfonia for solo violin partita (No.3) and lute suite (No.4).
These 3 chords converted from melancholy blues to another simple rock song ... THAT'S GENIUS!
(Ha, ha).
@@soundknight I mean, yeah Springsteen is simple, Morello, even more so...
but you're still a smug unlikeable twat for not realizing that "genius" comes in many shapes and sizes.
And has Vivaldi ever gotten you laid? I doubt it.
No more than using the phrase "dazzling reharmonization" ever has, even with your dumb superfluous hyphen.

The Grapes of Wrath is a must read for us all..a real terrible time in American history and should be learned about! And make us so grateful for the better times for future generations of that era it was brutal!
Although old, the topic is dramatically current. A big hug Bruce. May all human beings hear your message. Thanks!
I just watched a Tom Morello interview and it gives this song a whole new meaning. Tom is a heck of a smart man politically, and he is sooo talented with guitar. Bruce, you're a legend!! You, by far, are my all-time favorite musician, and I'm SOOO lucky to see the two of you live for this song on 4-26-12. Keep rocking, Boss!!
I just came to this video a few weeks ago. I am so grateful to have been able share Springsteen's time on this earth (Morello's too).
Tom’s a smart kind man no doubt. He also graduated from Harvard.
I've always admired this song. When Bruce writes about injustices in the world, I listen intently. And then RATM covered it, and I absolutely LOVED the energy and passion they put into it. But when Bruce and Tom Morello collaborated on this song something magic happened. This version of the song should be required listening for every person alive. This is magic. It haunts me to the point that I play it again and again. This is magic.
Required listening for all politicians around the world.
Same. For the past ten years I’ve watched various renditions of this act. I especially watch it to remind me that there are people out there actively fighting injustice. I really love is the acknowledgment of Bruce Springsteen for Tom Morello. In a real way, the Troubador’s rejection of inequality passes from Woody Guthrie, through Steinbeck and Springsteen. And now Morello reminds us that Tom Joad is just as relevant as ever. Waiting for the last to be first...neath the underpass, in a cardboard box. Damn.
My absolute favorite rendition of this song, though I have yet to hear a version I don't love. This rendition brings me to tears every time I listen to it.

Just discovered this. Morello doing his thing on guitar isn't a suprise, but his vocal harmonies with Springsteen? Wow!
So good and true, the lyrics are like a sharpened blade! Why can't more musicians sing about issues that really matter instead of those empty lyrics that bemoan their own life! Tired of all those love songs that don't make a difference, better let the world know that we need to address poverty, inequality, racism and government abuse in a powerful way!
