Same. For the past ten years I’ve watched various renditions of this act. I especially watch it to remind me that there are people out there actively fighting injustice. I really love is the acknowledgment of Bruce Springsteen for Tom Morello. In a real way, the Troubador’s rejection of inequality passes from Woody Guthrie, through Steinbeck and Springsteen. Morello’s solo is stunning, amazing, non human. I’m as awestruck as I was the first time each time I watch it. He reaches beyond any guitarist I’ve ever seen. It’s other worldly.
I lived in my car for quite a while and always felt that the poetry of music was a salvation. Thank you, Bruce and Tom Morello for this rendition of a great song that fills my heart with hope.
I'm living in my car in Australia where we have a housing crisis. Cancer a broken hip and back that will never heal and I'm just blown away as well. Smiles. Tears.
And i am from Germany and i don:t know how many times per day i am listening to this great wonderful song and these lyrics....it is transcendent. Song belongs to heaven...
Short answer is no. If you ever listen to an interview where Tom talks about it he was convinced it was going to be terrible because he just couldn't get it in the key Bruce wanted it in.
When they came to Australia Tom stepped in for SVZ who was in Europe filming lilyhammer. Such an amazing concert, they played Ghost of Tom Joad.... one of the best shows I've ever seen.
They do tealize. Morello and Springsteen have both talked about it years later, in awe. I just can't believe I happened to be there that nigh, out of dumb luck.
Should be the soundtrack of the entire world. "I have spent my life judging the distance between American reality and the American dream". You got it, thank you so much Boss. From Italy

He unselfishly works with other musicians....known or not well known....He brings a special LIGHT to their music.....THANK YOU TOM MORRELLO !.....
Did you see the huge smile on Bruce's face as he watched Tom go off on that epic of epic guitar solos. I think Tom blew Bruce's mind. Believe this was at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Ca. Saw it live. That's as good as it gets. After first couple songs, Bruce says, "We're out for blood tonite."
I'm ashamed of myself for never seeing this before. This is nothing short of genius work from two legends. Simply fantastic performance! Tom's "Bulls on Parade" scratching made me love this version even more.
Don't be ashamed; just be glad. I told my kids when we watched this together: Springsteen shows himself to be a pretty good lead guitarist, and he is an undying legend. Morello shows himaelf to be an other-worldly lead guitarist, and he is, relatively speaking, unknown. Our self-worth comes from our close associates, our co-workers, but most importantly, ourselves, and not from the outside world which neither knows us nor understands us.
@@johnthorne4093 I agree 100% that Springsteen is an excellent guitarist, and he could have shown more of his chops, but he let Morello absolutely slay the solo and the audience. I especially loved the "Bulls on Parade" scratching. This is my favorite version of one of my favorite songs.
песни рабочего движения.., задавленного пролетариата и простого народа. Мы все всё равно вместе, несмотря на время, расстояния и политику! Солидарность,Свобода, Равенство, Братство!
Perfection in live music, gut wrenching perfection. Steinbeck would be proud of this masterful song, describing a prodigal son-like Tom Joad leading his family through despair into the promised land of the times while at the same time fighting his demons and finding peace in true selflessness.
There are better words than I have to say how this song taps into our most primal sense of justice, fairness and dignity. Springsteen and Morello’s dusty throats singing our fears and courage; as told by Steinbeck. American music and literature can’t get better than this.
This is the near-perfect expression of the Struggle (capital S). And I constantly think about this song as I walk and drive through my beautiful, flawed, tattered hometown, Minneapolis. And as I see the noble comrades that feel like "a fella ain't got a soul of his own, but on'y a piece of a big one..."
Tom is a woefully underrated player. That solo was absolutely from the depths of his soul and just memorizing. Even Bruce was blown away. These 2 make an odd pairing of styles absolutely magical.
The Grapes of Wrath should be required reading for anyone who can read. And anyone who's read it and felt the same anger over the fate of the Joads will appreciate this song beyond its musicality.

Damn awesome guitar solo!! Never tired of listening to Tom’s solo, he put so much soul into it! I saw an interview and he talks how he had prepared to perform this song with Bruce, then day of performance he said that they were gonna play the song in a different key. He said that Bruce reassured him that he would do just fine. He did way more than fine. Awesome performance!
Tom has told about this night, he was very nervous but Bruce calmed him down. Tom had however played the E Street Band a surprise because during soundcheck he played his second solo "straight", but at the actual event he played it totally different which surprised everyone including Bruce. Next tour, he was on.
Just saw a post from @proustmalone on twitter. He said, "Absurdity is the state assigning you to read Grapes of Wrath at 16 and tear gassing you at 26 for understanding it."
Read it a long, long time ago. Saw the movie with James Dean, and Richard Davolas. Listen to this CD. Constantly. As I watch this, right next door to me, local artists are painting a huge Black Lives Matter Mural on a wall. The artists are black, brown and white. I'm 78 yrs old. Love it.

If you could separate causes from results, if you could know that Paine, Marx, Jefferson, Lenin were results, not causes, you might survive. But that you cannot know. Americans were suffering due to the greed of bankers making money. They killed people and smiled. John Steinbeck channeled that suffering and wrote "Grapes of Wrath". Bruce Springsteen lived a time where the suffering was less, but he felt that it was bubbling under the surface. He channeled John Steinbeck and wrote this song. Tom Morello was feeling the Rage and used what he had to channel into that energy passed down from generations. This was performed 11 years ago, at a time when it was relevant. Today is it's time. The intersection.
LOL I wouldn't say that activists were being spied on, jailed, and killed and the homeless and vulnerable were being starved to death as Pentagon budgets ballooned Not the 30s but the 70s and 80s were not happy times this is documented by Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a 1988 book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky, Also Tom came home one day and found a noose - he's half black - believe they know "pain" all too well
I mean, I don’t think the west is that bad currently especially economically which is what Steinbeck wrote about even with mice and men. Now California is in a state of havoc and people are looking to get out after what the amazing Democrat party did to it.
Also read the Fruits of Graft by Wayne Jett. History of the great depression and how Roosevelt was instrumental in its prolonging to make people suffer.
I was at a show in the pit right in front of Tom on this tour and when he ended his GOTJ solo we made eye contact just as he was saying to himself "F___ yeah!." Indeed. Awesome.
I just watched a Tom Morello interview and it gives this song a whole new meaning. Tom is a heck of a smart man politically, and he is sooo talented with guitar. Bruce, you're a legend!! You, by far, are my all-time favorite musician, and I'm SOOO lucky to see the two of you live for this song on 4-26-12. Keep rocking, Boss!!
Yeah, never mind actual musical genius like Max Richter's dazzling re-harmonisation of Vivaldi' universally significant 'For Seasons' or Bach's 3 versions of his own Sinfonia for solo violin partita (No.3) and lute suite (No.4). These 3 chords converted from melancholy blues to another simple rock song ... THAT'S GENIUS! (Ha, ha).
@@soundknight I mean, yeah Springsteen is simple, Morello, even more so... but you're still a smug unlikeable twat for not realizing that "genius" comes in many shapes and sizes. And has Vivaldi ever gotten you laid? I doubt it. No more than using the phrase "dazzling reharmonization" ever has, even with your dumb superfluous hyphen.

The version is a revelation. I'm a huge fan of Bruce, but this version knocked me over the first time I've heard it for over 10 years and all my friends "had to" listen to it. I don't know if I'll ever be impressed by a song again immediately and so sustainably, but I hope so.
One of the greatest songs ever written, one of the best duets ever performed and one of the most spectacular guitar solos ever played by Bruce 'the king' Springsteen and the incredible Tom Morello.
Tom created this entire opportunity/night for self. Due to the labor of love. Tom performed on another guy's song. All of the time Tom put in getting ready. By himself. Incredible night/performance.
They did it again in 2007. So now we have a Great Recession to go with a Great Depression. Both parties did it as anyone from the Clintons, Schumer, Bush, Boehner, Gingrich and the Gramms all sold us out to bankers and the already wealthy. So the anger is real. While American gets sucked into Red vs Blue the real problem is Green as in money. You can't have a democracy when money pays for power. Neither party taking money is going to deliver our government or the economy to we the people until we wise up and take it back. Yes, the parties have differences, but they have both made the system rotten and we pay the price. Tom Joad for the 21st century.

Morello here is like some sort of condensed Leonardo Da Vinci: at 6:13 he starts painting the Mona Lisa, at 6:37 he switches to the Vitruvian Man, at 6:57 he goes on to paint The Last Supper. And, then, when you think he's done and he cannot possibly top himself, at 7:19 he goes "ah, fuck it, I'm going to invent the helicopter!"

So good and true, the lyrics are like a sharpened blade! Why can't more musicians sing about issues that really matter instead of those empty lyrics that bemoan their own life! Tired of all those love songs that don't make a difference, better let the world know that we need to address poverty, inequality, racism and government abuse in a powerful way!

My Doctor just told me to seek this out. Amazing. He said he's seen Springsteen 125 times all over the world. He's going to Stockholm then London to see him again this year.
This is exactly the way this song should always be performed... With fury, wrath, frustration and anger... Excellent... Best lyrics ever !!!!

Morello’s solo is stunning, amazing, non human. I’m as awestruck as I was the first time each time I watch it. He reaches beyond any guitarist I’ve ever seen. It’s other worldly.

His interveiew was awesome. I'm here because of that too!

I love how Bruce looks truly surprised and deeply pleased with Tom's awesome riffs, he is all smiles, and you can see him yell "Go!"

This is one of the coolest fucking things I've ever seen. Tom Morello doesn't compromise his style for ANYBODY.
I wonder if they realized just how amazing this performance was turning out to be...incredible.
Short answer is no. If you ever listen to an interview where Tom talks about it he was convinced it was going to be terrible because he just couldn't get it in the key Bruce wanted it in.
They went on to play several more venues around the world 🌎👌🤩🤟🤟🤟
When they came to Australia Tom stepped in for SVZ who was in Europe filming lilyhammer. Such an amazing concert, they played Ghost of Tom Joad.... one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Saw it live. That's as good as it gets. After first couple songs, Bruce says, "We're out for blood tonite."
I'm ashamed of myself for never seeing this before. This is nothing short of genius work from two legends. Simply fantastic performance! Tom's "Bulls on Parade" scratching made me love this version even more.
good to see you have caught up
Easy... no hard feelings.
As a DJ, I was blown away by the scratching sounds he was making with that guitar, so dope!
Bruce is the Boss, always against the grain. Morello is simply a beast who refuses to be regular and is always a part of a movement. Amazing

Thank you for the Steinbeck shoutout.
You are exactly correct, in my semi- educated opinion.
Steinbeck and Bruce would have been best friends IMO. They are an extension of each other. Both geniuses!

Russian group Джанни Родари made cover on Russian language. I was on premiere of this cover and new album yesterday. Cool song... It's more than song.
There are better words than I have to say how this song taps into our most primal sense of justice, fairness and dignity. Springsteen and Morello’s dusty throats singing our fears and courage; as told by Steinbeck. American music and literature can’t get better than this.
Nowadays, it's something we are sorely beginning to lack.
This is the near-perfect expression of the Struggle (capital S). And I constantly think about this song as I walk and drive through my beautiful, flawed, tattered hometown, Minneapolis. And as I see the noble comrades that feel like
"a fella ain't got a soul of his own, but on'y a piece of a big one..."
Tom is a woefully underrated player. That solo was absolutely from the depths of his soul and just memorizing. Even Bruce was blown away.
These 2 make an odd pairing of styles absolutely magical.
Underrated? He is widely considered one of the greatest of all time.

LOL I wouldn't say that activists were being spied on, jailed, and killed and the homeless and vulnerable were being starved to death as Pentagon budgets ballooned
Not the 30s but the 70s and 80s were not happy times this is documented by Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a 1988 book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky,
Also Tom came home one day and found a noose - he's half black - believe they know "pain" all too well

I just came to this video a few weeks ago. I am so grateful to have been able share Springsteen's time on this earth (Morello's too).
Tom’s a smart kind man no doubt. He also graduated from Harvard.
Only a musical genius could take this original 1995 acoustic song, and turn it into such a great rocker with Tom Morello!!!
