Steinbeck's incredible ability to touch every human being's heart at its deepest, even millions of miles away from his country and even after 80+ years, is a gift we all need to cherish and to spread around us, to our families, friends and to the newer generations. That book was definitely a life changer and this song perfectly portrays it. I ain't American, nor a farmer, I wasn't even born during the great depression era of the USA, but the book remains relatable for hundreds of millions of poors, oppressed, immigrants and family-attached people, or should I say basically for everyone of us who are capable of having a feeling of empathy. Thank you for your feedback. It is likely that some of the children are still alive, some of them have also posted videos telling of their experiences.
Fascinating piece of cultural history: Steinbeck did not travel to Oklahoma himself, but were inspired by photo stories produced by Lange and Arthur Rothstein (Lange and Rothstein were actually hired by Roosevelt's New Deal administration to document US countryside in the 1930s). Woody Guthrie did in fact travel around the country like the Okies, so unlike Steinbeck he had first hand experience. Guthrie also used Rothstein's photos. Steinbeck in 1940 invited Guthrie to fundraising event where he met Pete Seeger. And as we know, Guthrie was Dylan's idol. Springsteen was also inspired by Guthrie. Steinbeck, Dylan and Springsteen are now big names. But it all began with the Dust Bowl, New Deal and Guthrie's travel!
Wow, what a great video you have made. This is probably my all time favourite song, and I have never heard this version. Thank you so much for sharing!
@@BoojumFed Ayn Rand.....oh boy. With all do respect, we can have a great conversation! Her foolishness? I dont question her. I seriously question her followers. And they scare me.
@@andrewgreaves6448 I'm not sure why you wouldn't question her; the fact that she wrote a few novels and a few papers on why the people who flunked her out of her introductory history and logic classes must have been intellectually/ morally deficient grants her no more intellectual clout than the thousands of other first-years who fail/ drop out because "the professor didn't like me" every year. She's just lucky that she found wealthy American funders who were afraid of the rise in trade-unionists (particularly German ones fleeing the rising shitshow in their homeland) and were therefore sympathetic to the hyper-partisan depiction of the world with them as the heroes she provided. (Which, as I believe you alluded to, was then taken and run with as the base assumptions to many of the more damaging supply-side economic models of the 20th century.) There _are_ good things to be found in Rand's theorizing, but they are the same good things that can be found in the much more rigorously thought out and internally consistent works of many philosophers; including the ones she straw-mans in order to make herself _seem_ like the logical superior too.
Also, sorry for the double-posting. I'm not sure if I just have a RUclips option miss-applied or what, but I can't seem to either edit or delete the duplicates...
This was Steinbeck's greatest novel. The speech you here at the beginning and thru out the song was written for the movie. I believe in 1949.. The books ending is completely different. The book end's when the family finds a young child and his father in a barn while taking cover from a storm. The father hasn't eaten in 6 days the the young boy says. He is just about finished. Then Rose of Sharon steps up. She was pregnant and the baby was still born but her breast's are still fool of milk. She tells everyone to step out, unbuttons her blouse and lays down beside him and then begins to breast feed him.
+Richard Snydet thank you for your comments and commentary Richard, I was thinking about the end of the book when I said the story is ultimately one of hope. I am honestly humbled by the response to my piece of work.
Brian, thank you very much for your positive feedback. I remember it was a lot of hard work but I'm still very pleased with the result. If Bruce has seen it he's never said! Thanks again HWD
I watch this video alot. Sometimes I'm just sad at the way people are just invisible to each other unless they're communicating thru messenger or Instagram. This reminds me that we aren't just robots or programmed brainwashed organisms. Beneath all.of the meaningless miniscule superficialities.... We're all searching for the ghost of old Tom Joad and as depressing as it sounds it gives me hope
As I said previously I found the track on ITunes and it doesn't credit the accompanying singer. "Live in Dublin" names the Session Band musicians on the digital booklet and quite a few are given vocal credits. Mark Anthony Thomson is one who Springsteen names so he would be my favourite. But thanks for showing interest in my video, it's great that it still attracts attention more than a year after I finished it. Obviously it is Henry Fonda mixed in with the talking.
Nice job with the artistic/creative interpretation and skillful blending of several media (and excellent job with your successful appeal to be awarded credit for your work!).
Thanks so much for that - I’m so pleased that the video is standing the test of time because my set up was pretty basic when I made it. The whole appeal process is designed to scare the creator but I decided if there was one video I should make a stand on it was this one
Heard this on a Xmas radio show which played some of the most meaningful songs for me and my family. My favourite version yet thanks and all the best for 2023 🎉❤
Incredibly beautiful what you've created here. I feel sad for these times now. I'm afraid those of us who were teens in the 60s are the last generation to really feel in our collective consciousness what this was like for a lot of folks. The photos still haunt, Henry Ford's voice reading John Steinbeck's words still haunt. Thank you, harveywetdog.
Thank you so much Debbie. This video is different to my usual work but I'm so proud of it. I think my best decision was to make it timeless, i.e. not link it to anything that was going on in 2011. This makes it as relevant today as it was when the book was written, the film was made and the song was first sung.
Yes, Debbie, this RUclips-Clip, create by harveywetdog, is really a masterrpiece and a big treasure too.I can`t see the unique Pictures enough!I can`t hear this amazing Song from Bruce Springsteen with Tom Morello`s support enough! The "Great Depression" and the "Migration of People" to a promise Land is past since many years, but the famous Story of THE GRAPE OF WRATH is still current... Thank you very much for your fine comment, Debbie --- and thank you deep, harveywetdog, for such an incredible upload. Hans
Thank you Hans you're very kind. ps it is not Tom Morello singing with Bruce it is I believe Frank Bruno; I like the Tom Morello version but I thought his guitar was too strong for this work.
Sorry for this big mistake, harveywetdog.... and thank you very much for your precious note.I`m sure, almost nobody knows thze Voice from Frank Bruno, Bruce?s "Cousin" and Member of the legendary Session Band. It`s hard to believe, that this great Piece of Music & History could not found a place on the hauting "LIVE IN DUBLIN"-Album (!) Anyway: You did more than a good Job with this fantastic YT-Clip!!!Wish you well from Switzerland, harveywetdog.Hans btw: I really like the stunning Guitar-Skill from Tom Morello -- and his unique Voice too....
Debbie I am not american but I feel sad too, I read the Steinbeck's novel and I know that there were very hard times in US. What I learned they faced the adversity and they solved, my respect
According to Wikipedia: The song made several appearances on Springsteen's 2006 "big folk" Sessions Band Tour, in a new arrangement that featured member Frank Bruno handling some of the vocals, and two extended instrumental passages that saw soaring interplay between violin, pedal steel guitar, trumpet, and harmonica. So it's Frank Bruno I believe.
I love the energy of Tom Morello's sit in with Bruce but the crunchy guitar at the end gets to me, so I think this version is so much better. Maybe a mash up, till the whining guitar stuff.
I first read GoW in 1972 also Bound for Glory by Woody Guthrie. I gotta say this is excellent evokes the period but because Tom Joad is a universal and the Springteen song is 'modern' it works on both levels.I watched people in Minneapolis last night burn a police precinct because a cop had murdered a man, and there was video, and no charges have yet been filed - whenever there's a cop beating a guy, indeed
Thanks for the hard work harveywetdog. I show this video to my high school students when we study Grapes of Wrath. Powerful stuff. If only more people cared for their fellow men (and women) . . .
+Joshua Cameron thank you Joshua it is very rewarding that this piece of work, which I put a lot of care into making, has proved so thought provoking and popular. Thank you for using it with your pupils and I hope it makes them think about the world a little more deeply.
Mr. or Miss harveywetdog thanks for this video, I also read the book, The Great Depression was a terrible moment for US when people was discriminated only because they were poor,
Дискриминация не прекратилась. Она продолжается. Вы не видите? Это не прошлое. Это настоящее. Капитализм порождает неравенство. Между людьми в стране, между странами.
One of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. I remember my uncle Martin seeing me reading the novel for s school book report on the great depression. He put the song on for me and I still turn to this song alot. Beautifully dark...necesssrily dark with a touch of sweetness. I remember in the book when tom gives the look for me speech I got tears in my eyes and my throat closed up and I had to choke it down so I wouldn't be seen crying lol.

Thank you very much that’s very kind; the film “The Grapes of Wrath” was on the TV in the U.K. yesterday and I have to admit the Henry Fonda/Tom Joad speech (I’ll be everywhere Ma) brought a tear to my eye.
@@harveywetdog believe it or not I have never seen this movie but I have read the book many times. I would like an opinion if the transfer of the book to the screen is good?
The film is obviously “of the time” but is quite faithful to the book copying some of the dialogue verbatim. I’ve always liked the way the film is lit, especially in the dialogue scenes, with a lot shot in the studio as well as on location along Route 66. The film has an optimistic ending and I think ultimately the book encourages us to be optimistic as well. For me I saw the film first and came to the book later so for me Henry Fonda is the definitive Tom Joad.
I'm 65. My Dad was born in 1926 in N.Y. . "Grapes of Wrath" was required reading in H.S. for me. Blew my mind. My Dad was3 when G.Depress. hit. My Dad never talked @ this but I was 5 when my Grandpa died so They are praying for me now.
Although it seems like a thousand years ago or so, I read all of Steinbeck's novels. This was my all time favorite. It's still in my all time top 3. Bruce perfectly captures the novels emotional plot perfectly. I don't think there is a better novel out there that encapsulates American literature. I would put this up against any novel ever written.
I’m in the U.K. and came to the book through the film. Best novel ever written, wow that’s a tough one but this would be in my top ten (and this is certainly my best video on RUclips so I have to thank Steinbeck, Fonda and Springsteen for that)

The Ghost of Tom Joad
Bruce Springsteen
Men walking 'long the railroad tracks
Going someplace, there's no going back
Highway patrol choppers coming up over the ridge
Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge
Shelter line stretching 'round the corner
Welcome to the new world order
Families sleeping in the cars in the southwest
No home, no job, no peace, no rest
Well the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kidding nobody about where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad
He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
Preacher lights up a butt and he takes a drag
Waiting for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
You got a one-way ticket to the promised land
You got a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathing in the city's aqueduct
Go!
Well the highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Waiting on the ghost of Tom Joad
Now Tom said, "Mom, wherever there's a cop beating a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Mom, I'll be there
Wherever somebody's fighting for a place to stand
Or a decent job or a helping hand
Wherever somebody's struggling to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, and you'll see me"
Yeah!
The highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad

It is very moving : this beautiful song + the pics + the voice of the late great Henry Fonda + the Red River Valley melody...
Thank you Major. I never really appreciated how well the music and movie soundtrack worked together. I’m also glad I decided to make the video “timeless”.
A work of strength and grace. I feel empowered after this and ready to tear the craw outta the super-rich and the bad in the Establishment
Thank you sincerely for posting this. I am using it in my Human Services teaching at the college level.
Thank you Jo Anne that's really humbling; it was a big piece of work for me so I'm glad you're able to make use of it.
Great song. Great edit. Particularly relevant in these days. Thank you.
Thank you - it was my aim to make it timeless.
fantastic work love the original pics they show the pain of the time. its had to imagine that all of these people are dead now
Thank you for your feedback. It is likely that some of the children are still alive, some of them have also posted videos telling of their experiences.
I think some of those pictures are by Dorothea Lange en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_Lange
Very good work. Just finished the book. Took me years to get around to reading it. An absolute masterpiece
well done Bravo if you don't feel something while watching this your not alive!
Thank you
Just read the book and found your video. Well done! Tremendous story of survival. "When it's time to go--we'll go. We'll do what we got to do." - Ma
Thank you 😊
Fantastic video, you captured the tone of the song with your images, love it, added it to my youtube list of songs for Bruce.
Chanson éternelle, très puissance et magnifiquement interprétée.Et très belles diapos.Merci
+Vincent Martinet thank you very much
Mes pensées exactement
Des images puissantes pour répondre aux paroles vraiment bien provocantes ami
on this miserable day, it was wonderful to see and hear this, cheers. even my 4 yr old daughter enjoyed it, she thinks Tom Joad is a "nice ghost"
No problem, thanks. Only four years to go?
Thank you for the insights
Только дочитал книгу, слезы на глазах.
Wow, what a great video you have made. This is probably my all time favourite song, and I have never heard this version. Thank you so much for sharing!
Steve thank you so much for that. I explained in the comments where I found the song from so I hope it is still available for you. David
harveywetdog thanks! It's not available anymore, but it lives on in your video. Thanks again!
You did a great job. Really, you caught with your images collection the spirit of the song and book imho.
Thank you
This version of the song is on this album on iTunes-
Serve2 (Fighting Hunger & Poverty) by Various Artists
Beautiful and haunting. Thanks.
Can,t stop playing this...thanks again dude, absolutely stunning. Reading Grapes of Wrath again, better second time around.
Hey Brian thanks for that. I'm just setting up my Equestrian Creative profile and I'm going to use your comment as one of my testimonials! Thank you
You are so welcome..all best wishes for your future success.
I truly appreciate everything youdid to make this sublime in every sense
Thank you Anita - yes I put a lot of work into this and I've been humbled by the response it has created over the years. Thanks HWDx
The Wealth of Nations and The Grapes of Wrath. All business students should read and appreciate and understand both books.
And then some Ayn Rand so they can recognize the echoes of her damn arrogant foolishness whenever they come across it.
And then some Ayn Rand so they can recognize the echoes of her damn arrogant foolishness whenever they come across it.
(Which, as I believe you alluded to, was then taken and run with as the base assumptions to many of the more damaging supply-side economic models of the 20th century.)
There _are_ good things to be found in Rand's theorizing, but they are the same good things that can be found in the much more rigorously thought out and internally consistent works of many philosophers; including the ones she straw-mans in order to make herself _seem_ like the logical superior too.
Also, sorry for the double-posting. I'm not sure if I just have a RUclips option miss-applied or what, but I can't seem to either edit or delete the duplicates...
I'm using this in a high school class on the Great Depression and Dust BOwl. Thanks for the wonderful production!
Thank you Kathleen and glad you like it. It is also going to feature in an e-book by American author Judy Gerard Thomson
Just made me cry
Love what you have put together! My Dad jumped the boxcars as a young man, and I have always loved this song!
Glad you liked it, thank you.
Congratulations on such a wonderful piece of work. Hope Bruce sees it.
Brian, thank you very much for your positive feedback. I remember it was a lot of hard work but I'm still very pleased with the result. If Bruce has seen it he's never said! Thanks again HWD
Thanks for doing the video. Nicely done. A great song, beautiful, haunting period photos. An amazing and tragic part of our history.
We heard this song in class!♡
I watch this video alot. Sometimes I'm just sad at the way people are just invisible to each other unless they're communicating thru messenger or Instagram. This reminds me that we aren't just robots or programmed brainwashed organisms. Beneath all.of the meaningless miniscule superficialities.... We're all searching for the ghost of old Tom Joad and as depressing as it sounds it gives me hope
That’s deep Candace and you are right, Tom Joad/Grapes of Wrath is a story of hope....... keep watching HWD
Fear not, Tom is out there i wear his name on my lunch pale to work everyday. Cheers.
The pictures just touch the heart .
Very hard times indeed . 😨😨
Beautifully Done Video . 👍
These breathtaking 6:08 minutes represent an important part of Americas history better than any thick book...!!! thank you very much & deep, HWD
Thank you Hans that’s much appreciated; as I said at the time “The Grapes of Wrath” is ultimately a story of hope and we all need hope at the moment.
@@harveywetdog ``HOPE for the BEST, expect the worst -- and take what comes....`` don`t surrender !!! Mahalo nui loa again, HWD ;)
My favorite version. Thank you for posting and I love the pictures
Thank you and yes I agree it is a great version of Tom Joad
The Boss singing, but voice sounds so similar to Ryan Bingham, Ryan should do this as a cover
When he gets Tom Morello in it, it's magic. :)
I think I’ve said in a previous response I did consider the Tom Morello version but the guitar was too strong for the atmosphere I wanted to create
Superb work, harveywetdog! Truly outstanding interpretation of the novel and the song.
My favourite version yet thanks and all the best for 2023 🎉❤
Thank you and all the best for you as well
@@harveywetdog ❤️
Beautiful work. Thank you.
Thank you James HWD
Because of this video Iam reading the book now. Both are absolutely great this video and the book, thanks!
Thank you so much I’m humbled
.......and without commercials. Epic. Still looking for a Tom Joad, capitalism requires it. And thank you. Awesome video. Regards.
According to Wikipedia:
The song made several appearances on Springsteen's 2006 "big folk" Sessions Band Tour, in a new arrangement that featured member Frank Bruno handling some of the vocals, and two extended instrumental passages that saw soaring interplay between violin, pedal steel guitar, trumpet, and harmonica.
Boy your comment brought a tear to my eye. I deliberately didn’t link my video to a current event to make it timeless. Take care.
Mr. or Miss harveywetdog thanks for this video, I also read the book, The Great Depression was a terrible moment for US when people was discriminated only because they were poor,
+Braulio Soto thank you for your comments and its Mr Harveywetdog!
My apologies

One of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. I remember my uncle Martin seeing me reading the novel for s school book report on the great depression. He put the song on for me and I still turn to this song alot. Beautifully dark...necesssrily dark with a touch of sweetness. I remember in the book when tom gives the look for me speech I got tears in my eyes and my throat closed up and I had to choke it down so I wouldn't be seen crying lol.
Crying is good! As I said in my sleeve notes ultimately this is a story of hope.
Thank you “Congratulations to Bruce for transcribing with such accuracy the difficulty that all these men, women and children had to brave for a better life and history unfortunately repeats itself. Supposedly someone told me that Springsteen comes out of Freehold, N.J.? Maybe. God bless this man for his message& all the musicians!
Apart from when they insist on taking all the earnings from creators work rather than sharing equitably.
One of my favourite song. The video it's a masterpiece. BRAVO. Thanks.
@@harveywetdog thank you very much.
I'm 65. My Dad was born in 1926 in N.Y. . "Grapes of Wrath" was required reading in H.S. for me. Blew my mind. My Dad was3 when G.Depress. hit. To me these people I can't stand next in any way , shape,or form.Especially in their deter. to survive. Some committed suicide from the reality. My Dad never talked @ this but I was 5 when my Grandpa died so They are praying for me now.
We all have it in us to survive when the going gets tough enough
Although it seems like a thousand years ago or so, I read all of Steinbeck's novels. This was my all time favorite. It's still in my all time top 3. Bruce perfectly captures the novels emotional plot perfectly. I don't think there is a better novel out there that encapsulates American literature. I would put this up against any novel ever written.
I’m in the U.K. and came to the book through the film. Best novel ever written, wow that’s a tough one but this would be in my top ten (and this is certainly my best video on RUclips so I have to thank Steinbeck, Fonda and Springsteen for that)
@@harveywetdog I'm not saying best, but it hangs in there with the other greats for sure. Somerset Maughm's Razor's Edge is my all time favorite novel, but this is a very close second.
Well done on your appeal success!! A brilliant creation
Thank you - the process is basically designed to frighten creators, but if you hold your nerve the results can be positive

Her soul sadly looks ancient
I hope she saw some joy and contentment in her life
She looks like her childhood was stolen with eyes that have seen too much despair
I truly hope that she saw some happiness before she passed like a wink from a husband a smile from a daughter a giggle from a son
