    The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) announced this week that it is opening a preliminary evaluation into a large number of complaints it has received about the rear-view camera in the Honda Ridgeline.

    looking at the design and the stress on the wiring, this looks like a design flaw. Mine went last week and as soon as I saw your video, bingo. Thanks for the info but we should demand Honda recall the unit for this. It will happen 100%.

    It's more than braking point when you open tailgait downward. But when I looked more closely it pinches and smashes the entire harnes even more when you open it from left to right. The harnes get trapped between the tailgate and the hinge. And every time I open and close it the wires being squished. No wander wires fail the stress. It's definitely flaw in design. Make sure during the repair to reinforce the harness at pinching/backing point.

    I'm getting a new harness tomorrow. I'm pretty confused how to access the truck-side connector.

    It broke on my 2017 RTL-E. I had bought the extended warranty for 10 year bumper to bumper, Honda dealer would not fix it under warranty, they said it broke do to normal wear. Bullshit, my tailgate is hardly ever use. Not impressed Honda!

    Mine just stopped working last week. Guess I'll have to break out the soldering iron and shrink tubing. 2017 RTL-E
    Just FYI, the black loom tubing looked fine. I had to cut mine open to see that every single wire had broke insulation (some in two places) and a blue wire was completely severed in half.

    Ty, my 2017 RTL backup camera display just stopped working today. Found your video right away and my wiring break looks exactly like yours. As a former electronics tech, I'm certain I can fix as you did, but did you happen to post when you replaced the harness? I just had my left-rear door small harness replaced (free even out of warranty as it was a reoccurring problem), because the door simply would NOT open. Also had the fuel injectors replaced, under extended warranty.
    So, did you replace your harness or have Honda do it or skip it altogether?

    • @acura2g
      @acura2g  3 года назад +1

      After consulting my local dealership it was suggested that I wait on a factory harness replacement. The amount of cars affected by this condition and the fact it affects a safety component of the vehicle (camera), there is a higher than normal probability of a recall.

  • @numberpirate
    @numberpirate 2 года назад +2

    Why would you replace it with the same faulty harness that failed the first time? That makes no sense. If I were going in there to repair it, I would solder wires, heat shrink, then armor the wiring so that I would know that I fixed the problem that Honda of America was negligent in making.

    Camera just died today too. Thanks for the video. My wires are clearly frayed and cracked. Did you have to take the plastic interior cover off of the tailgate to make the repair? If so, was it as straightforward as it appears to be? I think I'd prefer to fix this rather than hope for a recall.

    • @acura2g
      @acura2g  2 года назад

      You don't need to take the interior panel off to perform a repair but it definitely does help. As I recall the top of the tailgate was hard to take off to get the panel off but the panel itself was straight forward

      I believe it's 32109-T6Z-A00 but double check with your local Honda Dealership for the correct revision as they have been revised a number of time. They'll have a couple on the shelf, no doubt ;)

      @@acura2g oddly service manager at dealer claimed that he'd never seen this before and quoted me $587 labor alone for "backup camera repair". Lead tech also was not familiar, but parts folks had no problem finding what i needed. Wasn't in stock but was delivered next day. I actually "soldered" myself while waiting for the harness to come in- heat shrink solder made it easy - but everything feels "crispy" and I expect I'll need to replace the wiring entirely at some point so paid for the part.

    Can't figure out how to get the tailgate cover off

    • @acura2g
      @acura2g  2 года назад

      The backer panel is held on with torque fasteners and the top part of the gate is held on with clips that you pull off. Once you get the top covers off there is another plastic part that you slide left and right to remove.
