  • The Gen 2 Honda Ridgeline has a design flaw where the backup camera goes black (black screen). This happens right around the time the warranty runs out for most people. As of February 2022, the department of transportation has launch an investigation into this issue for 2017 and 2018 Honda Ridgelines. There is even a class action lawsuit over the issue. I have a 2019 Honda Ridgeline, it has the same problem. In this video I’ll show you how to diagnose this problem and fix it yourself with do it yourself (DIY) ingenuity. Hopefully Honda will issue a recall for this issue.
    I used the following tools:
    Electrical wire connectors: amzn.to/38niabW
    Irwin wire strippers: amzn.to/3qWHo7o
    Body panel removal tool: amzn.to/3DuZWkl
    Wagner Heat gun: amzn.to/3uQNh75
    Rubber mallet: amzn.to/3uQNh75
    Zip ties: amzn.to/3DvQw8b
    Electrical Tape: amzn.to/3DvQVHD

2020 Ridgeline has the same problem as of yesterday. I sent a complaint to NHST - hopefully the recall will be expanded. In the mean time, this looks like an amazing band-aid to the problem. Thank you for taking the time to teach us....well done.

Thanks so much for this, Nate. I never comment on videos, but this one really did the trick. Saved me over $500 on this fix with the dealer. I have 2020 Ridgeline. Dealer said that there is recall on this, but not for my VIN. Called Honda Motor. They said I could apply for "financial assistance" for repair, but I would have to get $140 diagnosis at dealer first, then wait months for my case to be decided. They do not care that this is safety issue. They do not care that I spent $32k on my Ridgeline. Great video. Only criticism is that I wish you had taken the time to explain how to get the trim back on the top edge of the tailgate. Very difficult to slide it back on those white clips. No matter, BRAVO brother! I could not have done the repair without this video.

Nate, thanks for your video I had exactly the same issue on my 2019 ridgeline. My screen went blank after flickering once in a while I did exactly what you did and purchased a heat gun and the solderless connectors from Amazon. The job took a little more time than I thought but I got a lot of satisfaction out of doing the repair myself. Your video was an excellent resource thank you.

Thanks again for the great tutorial. Did repair this morning. First time using solder and seal connectors. ($12.95 from Amazon) Excellent results. The Irwin wire stripper ($25.99) makes my conventional wire stripper obsolete. Got a star bit set from Harbor Freight for $10.00. Spend about $68. for repair. The local Honda dealer wanted to charge "about three hundred dollars." How about this: do one's own repair and save a bundle.

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge-your time and effort is appreciated. My Dad’s 2017 Ridgeline backup camera went out at about 38,000 miles just like you said! Unfortunately the tailgate doesn’t flip down due to improperly repaired accident damage so I’m not sure how to go about fixing it as there’s virtually zero room to access the wires and make the repair 🙃. Hopefully the recall will be approved but even if it is we know how difficult the dealership can be to approve any repairs that don’t bring in $. Anyway thanks again!

NHTSA's investigation currently covers only 2017-2018 Ridgelines which were all manufactured before May 2018 when rearview cameras became required by law. Some 2019 Ridgelines were manufactured before May 2018 as well since 2019 production began prior to March 5, 2018. It's possible that Honda will issue a voluntary recall in the future for this, but I don't see how NHTSA can force a recall for 2017 to early-2019 models. Also, the affected harness connects in front of the rear bumper - you don't have to replace it all the way to the cab.

Great video - I should have watched it first before trying (and failing at it) myself. I've got 3 broken wires and the rest looks rough - any idea what the replacement harness part is? Also had a minor disaster - one of the T30 torx bolts holding liner stripped rather than turned. I pried liner up to get to the wires but would obviously rather remove the last screw. I see the bolts have some extra grooves - is there a tool that might use them or some other way to remove it?

    • @NateFixesIt
      @NateFixesIt  2 года назад

I did some searching on the internet, from what I saw it looks like for 2017-2018 Ridgelines, it is 32109-T6Z-A00
For 2019 Ridgelines, it is 32109-T6Z-A01. Not sure of the part number for 2021+. If you call a dealer, they should be able to verify the part number. I don't know what the difference is or whether or not the 2017-2018 can use the A01.
I am not aware of a special tool to remove the tailgate screws. If you can repair it without removing the last screw, that’s probably the best solution. You could try putting a chisel or other tool into the slots to turn the bolts (may want to expand the slots with a Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel), but you will probably need to replace the bolt once it’s removed.
      Good luck.

I don't have this issue, but the screen suddenly got much darker. Its not the display contract but just the camera - very dark at night though it is sending a signal. How to fix? Is there a flashlight or nightvision that should be operating when in dark backup mode?

    • @NateFixesIt

Your reverse lights (the lights built into your taillights that light up when you put the truck in reverse) should provide appropriate lighting. I would check to see if those are working properly. Have you had the recall fix on the wiring for your truck (assuming yours is a model year that was recalled)? If not, getting that fixed for free would be my next stop.

Good job, Nate. I have a 17" Ridgeline with a very blurry RBC, unlike when the vehicle was new. The exposed wire harness plastic protector tube is fractured, but no visible break on the outside ( visible )wires. Perhaps a wire is partially broken, not allowing good electrical flow to the camera. What do you think? Thank you.
