- In this video I show you how to change the oil on your Gen 2 Honda Ridgeline.
Oil require is a 0W-20 SAE. I use Full synthetic on all my vehicles. Trying out Kirkland brand Oil this time and Mobil one oil filter.
5.7 US qt for filter and oil replacement and just 5.4 US qt if you only replace the oil.

1) when removing the filter use a gallon sized ziplock bag...it will catch all the oil and prevent it from getting all over the frame and 2) check that the rubber gasket from the old filter is not still stuck on the truck before installing the new filter
I’ll have to try that trick with the bag. I hate cleaning up the control arm. Freaking annoying! Thanks.
That’s an awesome tip. I don’t know why I never thought of that.
Awesome hack… thanks!!
This comment was absolutely clutch. Thank you
Oil filter on my Ram 2500 Cummins is in the same spot. The gallon ziplock is the best way to go.
I almost made the rookie mistake of draining the oil before turning the wheel all the way to the right. So the order of things is, while warming up the engine, turn the wheel all the way to the right. After shut down loosen the oil filler cap, etc.
Thank you Yuriy for great production value. Good lighting, good framing, always in focus, and perfect pacing. You should win awards. Now to go for the rear diff fluid change.
Not sure what people are complaining about, but I think this is a pretty good video. Thanks, very helpful.
My 2017 has 141k on it. Oil change, battery, tires. That's it. Still runs like a beast!
Awesome! Hope mine will be the same.
@@YuriyMotso It will! The J35 series of engines fro. Honda is considered one of the most reliable engines of all time! I currently own 6 Hondas. They simply won't die.👀😅😅😅💪🏽💪🏽
What about the timing belt replacement at 100,000 miles??? Have you done that??
@@marks6072 No I have not. Doing it at 150k. I drive fairly conservative and don't haul much.
@@hymefly Honda will probably do a software update to help mitigate premature ware. Also cover up you transmission center console button cluster.
A guy at the dealer I go to said he had a customer spill soda on it. 5k later...
This is why I like 2017-20 better.
Good concise video. I hate how to videos that are 10 minutes of filler
you can also reset the maintenance minder through the navigation menu. Home - Settings - Vehicle - Maint Info - Reset
Thanks, good video, and we all appreciate ones that are short and to the point. Other oil change vids can be 15-20 minutes and show the same thing. Just to add a little info:
17mm socket for the drain plug
Torque spec for drain plug is only 29-30 foot pounds. That's not much, and if you've ever dealt with a stripped drain plug, you'll be sure to use a torque wrench every time in the future.
I try to keep how to videos short.
Awesome thank you for this. I was just about to start grab my socket set and seeing what fits.
That was a great vidoe. Quick , informative and no bs or rambling on and on like most videos. Well done.
Thank you very much.
Great video! I didn’t have to forward skip once. I’m not a fan of “How to” videos that have all the excess talk. Just show us how to get it done. Thank you Sir!
Perfect video - thanks for the tip on turning the wheel to the right. Save me time and about $50 doing it myself thanks to you!
I've been removing the right front wheel in order to remove the oil filter to reduce the amount of spillage. I did not think turning the wheel to the right would help, but it apparently does. BTW, I believe most instructions are to HAND tighten the oil filter and NOT to use a strap or wrench. Am I correct?
Very helpful, thank you. I really like your videos, straight to the point. Great job!
Very helpful, quick and to the point. Thanks
I recently purchased a used 2019 Ridgeline and I do my own oil changes. I drained out (including filter) just under 5 quarts of oil and refilled (with filter change) 5 quarts. My dip stick shows at the full line. I question where 5.7 quarts is the correct amount. I have also read in on-line blog post that 4.5 quarts will fill the engine, 5 quarts with filter change. Is my dip stick wrong? I'm gonna call a local dealer service department and ask them the correct amount of oil to fill the engine.
I can do this without jacking the truck?
Yuriy: great video. I just got my 2022 Ridgeline. What are your thoughts of the Fumoto drain valves, in place of always having to replace the drain bolt gasket every time you change the oil? I had one on my 2004 Silverado from 20K to 190K miles ( I have sold the pickup ) without any problems other than waiting for the oil to complete drain. Keep up the great videos on the Ridgeline!
I personally have never used one. My dad does have one on his ford econoline and Lexus gx470. Personally don’t think it’s bad but let’s say you did go off road and something had to snag it. Would be easy to break off then.
When you do these videos please specify the oil pan bolt size saves time.
Hi, please also do a video if you plan to install an oil catch can. Thanks
I plan on doing quite a few upgrades to the Honda. The oil catch can is on my radar. I have a very big life change happening in the next 2 weeks moving across the country so I will be focusing on trailer/towing and fuel economy.
@@YuriyMotso Thats awesome, have fun and have a safe journey. Looking forward for more contents from your channel.
I always remove the right front wheel to access the filter. Easier with the tire out of the way.
No need turn the steering wheel to the right all the way and just get in front of the car. Reach in grab the filter and unscrew it.
I lay on my back with my right hand grabbing the filter and unscrewing it. Very easy.
I watched all of your vids - very good content - keep them coming
I just fit a 2022 Ridgeline and is an awesome truck …
What are oil change intervals on those vehicles and how often do you do it - thx
I Personally do mine every 5000 miles. Honda no longer has interval changes as the vehicle has a built in maintenance Minder. It checks engine operating conditions and helps coordinate oil service dates and other maintenance checkups. Mine typically tells me every 6000 miles when I tested it in the earlier stages. But when I checked my oil it was darker than I would like both times so I decided to just do it based on an interval. I use trip B as my oil reminder. When that trip hits 5000 I do an oil change.
Just keep in mind resetting the MM earlier will affect other scheduled times in it and throw everything off according to Ridgeline forums. They say change the oil early but dont reset the MM early...let it continue on schedule
How to do you measure 0.7 qts after putting in 5 qts? And does the 5.7 qts include in the oil filter or you just put all 5.7 qts in the engine?
5.7 is with oil filter replacement. After you put in your oil, let the vehicle run for a bit and test again. It’s something that you pour in 5.5 qts and then you just have to top off and check the level until it’s perfect at the line. So no exact way because there may be some oil left over from the oil change and everyone’s vehicle will be slightly different.
@@YuriyMotso thank you!
You don’t need a oil wrench when replacing a oil filter. Hand tighten only. You don’t want to crush the gasket or twist it out of place.
I didn’t over tighten it. Don’t worry. It’s hand tight just easier to do with that as my hands were a bit oily.
Glad you told me you only tighten hand tighten with the wrench. Thanks. You do the change exactly how I do it. Over fifty years doing my oil changes.
@@arthursmith643 You have a few years of oil changes over me. :)
you’ll still need it get filter off next time even just hand tight
Interesting to see it requires more than 5 litres, other Honda/Acura products having the same 3.5 V6 requires less engine oil
Thank You. Much appreciated.
Don't mean to be critical but filling filter up with oil is not needed, period!! But making sure old filter gasket is off and that the new filter gasket gets some oil rubbed on it is a MUST!!!! Safety glasses helps keeps u seeing for the rest of ur life too!!
Bolt size?
I turn the wheel to the right. I lay my back on the ground with my right hand grabbing the filter and unscrew it. Very easy. Never use a wrench on a filter. Hand tight only.
Me too. In this case my hand and can was too oily and I couldn’t get it hand right even after wiping down. So I just applied a light amount of force. I have a new technique for the vehicle now that works even better. I use a plastic bag to remove the filter and it catches the majority of the oil.
you are incorrect. I used to do "hand tight only" until my 2017 Accord started to slowly leak from the oil filter seal. A small amount of torque with a filter wrench stopped it. A week or two later, changed oil and filter and once again slightly torqued the oil filter past "hand tight" and no more leakage issue.
How many miles did you go before replacement?
I been letting the Honda tell me when to change the oil because I want to see what the oil looks like and It’s roughly 5-6k miles. Typically I always change my oil at 5k on my cars prior to the Ridgeline. I use full synthetic oil instead of synthetic blend.
If you do highway miles every five thousand. If you do mostly city do three thousand mile oil changes.
Do you need a new Gasket each time? Is it optional?
You can reuse the gasket in a pinch however it’s not recommended.
You should change it if you have one. If not next time. You can order them on Amazon or any parts store.
Has anyone found a better funnel for the Ridgeline? I just spent more time replacing the oil than I did draining and changing the filter. It's an awkward angle and hard to reach.
Plastic gallon ziplock bag. Best so far.
If it fits, try the longer transmission funnel.
I have a 06 Ridgeline and toss in the whole 5 qts of oil. It calls for 4.5 qts. Half a qt won’t harm anything.
Any idea what the torque setting for the oil plug is?
29 ft lbs
I put a plastic bag over the oil filter to limit the mess. I use 1 quart plastic bag. Take your time.
That’s exactly what I do now.
I see you used a Mobil one filter. 👍
Shhhh. It's a secret to keeping these trucks from breaking down. Oops. I said too much.
I use the same. $10.00 at Walmart. Best place for oil and filters
I find it interesting that the Honda service manual says to run/warm up the engine before replacing the engine oil.. One would imagine you want most of the oil to drop to the oil pan before doing an oil change, not turning on the car sending oil all over the motor before replacing it. Well, Honda engineers must know why.. It’s the same for my Passport. Was the oil very hot once you started flushing it?
It's to make sure the oil is warm and flows properly. You can do it cold, you just will want to wait longer before re-installing the plug to make sure everything drains.
It takes finesse to heat engine enough between too hot, and too cold. Warm: oil pours out smoothly. Cold: like honey/sticky
Just drive the vehicle around the block that will be enough for the oil to warm up. Let it sit about ten minutes that will let the oil drain to the pan. Then undo the bolt to the oil pan.
Toss in the whole 5 quart jug it’s not going to hurt anything. It’s called a forgiveness factor. Bob Likis a top mechanic can explain here on RUclips.
I'm surprised that you didn't need to jack up the truck to gain access to the drain plug.
what happened to your bottom cover that you have to remove to access the oil pan plug?
I’m confused with the question? If you are talking about the oil bolt then that’s not covered by the under body plastic cover.
I love your videos, thank you so much. However the music choice and the volume on this one are just so out of line I had to stop watching
Thanks for the feed back. It’s one of my earlier videos as I began learning the editing process so I apologize about the volume of the music. 👍🏻
RUclips Bob Likis will over fill oil hurt oil pressure sensor.
I’d love to meet the moron engineer who thought putting the oil filter in that location was a good idea. Bloody ridiculous. Some vehicles actually make oil changes a breeze such as the Kia Telluride. Wake up, Honda, and give your head a shake.
ah yes KIA! wonderful cars. much better than honda on all accounts.
Definitely have come a long way and are very attractive these days.
