This took 30 minutes to install using your instructions! Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
I recently completed this easy project thanks to this informative video. It's a nice upgrade to an awesome truck. I took my locking cylinder to a local locksmith who re-keyed it to fit the valet key inside my key fob.
Just finished up the install on my 2017 Ridgeline, works well with the new Honda hard Tonneau cover I just got. All set for traveling and not worrying about suitcases not being secure. Thanks so much for doing the install vid!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching
I followed the RUclips step-by-step and my replacement lock mechanism went in smoothly without a single hitch. Very good description, very clear audio and the video was a giant help. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this excellent video. I needed to replace the top rail cap on my 2018 Ridgeline tailgate. The Honda garage wanted 2 hours of labor at a cost of $400 to replace it. Plus $200 for the cap. I used parts of your video and replaced the cap in 15 minutes. I may put the Tailgate lock on later.
Hi Jason, I'm a female (non mechanic) and I just followed your excellent video step by step and now have a perfecty locking tailgate on my 2017 Honda Ridgeline!!! I also ran into the camera/screw situation.... I could not get the camera bracket solidly placed, so I got 2 different (brass) screws that were able to be screwed all the way down and now it's solid! I hope that's okay. Something else that I did, that might be helpful to someone.... before I installed the new cylinder, I took it to a locksmith and had it re keyed to work
with the key in the key fob so that I don't have to carry around another extra key!
Thanks so much for a fabulous, detailed.... thorough instructional video! Well done!
I just did this project on my 2017, thanks for your work!
Thank you for this well done tutorial. I did it today on my 2018 today you made it an enjoyable 45 minute experience.
Jason, thanks for the video. My install went perfectly. A few comments: Slide the camera harness (From the camera) to the passenger side, don't pull up; The orientation of the tabs on the white clips does not matter, the clips just need to be fully engaged in their sockets. My factory clips had the tabs in random orientations. All the tabs do is allow the cap to slide to the passenger side when "bumped" with the hammer; I agree to check the camera mount screw install. Mine were difficult to get fully tightened and I needed to be very careful; Which brings me to consider a full set of Phillips head screwdrivers or a 12-in-1. I think it is important to use the correct size screwdriver for the fastener as they are almost one-use items and it seems like it is relatively easy to mess up a screw head if you use the wrong size Phillips head screwdriver; PS - this video was the one that knows what the new purple clip is for (to retain the swing release cable). Thanks again, following your videos have resulted in rear doors that open wide and a tailgate that locks, these were my two concerns when I bought the truck and you helped me address both of them.
I had that problem with the camera screws, too. They got to a point where they felt as tight as they could get, but the bracket was still loose. I had to psych myself up a little to dare tightening them further.
Jason, excellent video. All of the steps matched my 2019 Ridgeline except that the camera harness was mounted to the tailgate with a clip. It was a small challenge to release it. Other than that every step went smoothly and my lock was installed in just about 1 hour. thanks for this.
Great!
I must agree with Joe. The hardest part was removing the camera harness from the clip attached to the tailgate frame. The 2nd most difficult part was reinstalling the white clips. Most of them snapped right in, while others took a screwdriver with a flat blade to get in. Overall, best video for installing the manual lock. Thank you!
Thank you for excellent step by step instructions. You were very thorough. I just finished upgrading tailgate lock on my 2019 Ridgeline. I am not the best mechanic but I took my time and got through it.
Thanks for all the details! One detail I found missing in other RUclips lock installs was how to not just hammer off the top section of the tailgate, but how to set it back up for easy reinstall.
I had an existing Pop N Lock system (installed at the local Honda dealership) which had proven faulty from the beginning due to loose wiring connections, and I had hoped to be able to use both the tailgate lock and the Pop N Lock, but they are definitely NOT compatico. The structure of the OEM tailgate lock (the large black bracket) requires the removal of the Pop N Lock. The Pop N Lock is nice since it runs off the key fob, when it works, and its a bummer when it doesn't and I can't open my tailgate or it just plain doesn't lock. For now I will take a breather on the process, since I tightened up the connections on the Pop N Lock and can now easily pull it all apart again and take out the innards and go solo with the keyed OEM system. It's so nice not to have to rely on expensive crappy dealership work and just figure it out ourselves. Thanks again for your video and time making it!
I just completed the install of the locking kit in my 2017 Ridgeline. Your video was extremely useful. Thank you.
Hey, I just came inside from doing this mod on my '18, wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. In particular, it would've taken me an hour to figure out how the heck to put that top plastic piece back on the tailgate without it. :)
Well done video! You should also share part numbers and cost, it would be helpful.
Nice job. Just installed a handle lock on my 2019 RTL-E using your well done video. Thanks. ;)
I initially ordered a electronic Pop & Lock, but opted for the more simple this OEM lock.
Great video!!!
it makes the job easier with your detailed videos... it saves me a lot of time
Great instructions. Everything was spot on for a convoluted process which saved dealing with the over_priced dealers.
Thanks, exactly why i do these videos
where can I get the lock for 2017 Honda Ridgeline
Great video, clear and concise. I used your tutorial to replace a faulty rear view camera on my 2017 RTL-T. I may upgrade the rear latch now that I know how to do it. Thanks again for the great video.
Thanks glad I helped
Great narrative - made the installation completely straightforward. Yay Jason!!!
Thank you for your video. Well explained. You saved me over $200.00 on labor cost from the Honda dealer.
Thanks and Im glad it helped!
Thanks for this! Side swing latch for tailgate was broken & I didn't know how to get the top cap off. I may eventually put the lock in & will come back to your video.
Of the three RUclips videos that apply, yours is the best. My install went smoothly except for the violet clip replacement. The old clip broke when taking it out and the new clip broke when putting it in. Both broke in the same place. I was able to secure the broken clip with aluminum wire until the a new clip arrives in the mail. Everything working fine.
Great job on the video as well as the upgrade. Thanks for taking the time to do it!
My 2020 locks from my key fob, from the setup screen. Love the topper, mine works perfect from the key fob. Thanks for the information, I decided to get the topper, based on your information, thanks!
Pop and Lock has a kit with a power lock. Highly recommend over this manual retrofit. But this video was very instructive.
Best instruction to date. Thank you. Picking up mine this week.
Thank you for your Service, it's really, really helps me Thank you very much
I sent at least 30 o 40 emails abut this issue 🎉🎉🎉 on my 2017 and I just come across this video 😂😂😂😂
Nice project there. Well explained with tips! I think they didn't include that because a locking top is optional. Anyone can just reach in so why lock the tailgate. That's my take. I have the Tonneau cover but it doesn't lock. Next is to make the rear door open wider. Saw a easy video on that.
THANK YOU for the video. Installed mine today, with your assistance!
Great video, your instructions made the job a quick DIY job, thanks.
Thank you for this video! I would have never been able to do mine without it. The parts don't have any instructions at all except how to lock and unlock after it's installed.
Great video. Now I know I can do it myself. Thank you Jason.
Thanks Jason, have the same vehicle and the same complaint but love the Ridgeline.
Great video. Helped me out with my lock install. Thank you.
Took the lock to the dealer before I installed the unit, and had it re-keyed to work with the emergency key that is in the remote. By doing this, there is no need to carry an extra key.
Christopher Marcotte Roughly how much is it to have it rekeyed? I’ve been getting quotes for $125 and $145 so far which seems steep.
@@joedesocio i believe i paid about $75 at the dealer. kinda expensive for what it is, but i figured if the dealer messed it up, they would have to make it right. small price to pay in my opinion.....
@@christophermarcotte6568, I paid $30 at my local locksmith to have my cylinder re-keyed.
@@joedesocio Paid $55 for it earlier today.
Yesterday, I paid $25 at my local Locksmith.
Jason, thank you for the video. Very helpful.
Jason, thank you for demonstrations.
I should watch much earlier because my body shop left something in back door.
Very helpful, just have to be aware of the camera view and your inadvertent block of it with your right hand. There were times instal of tiny parts was tricky and your right hand blocked your movement.
Impressive and yes, Honda should have included it. Will probably have the dealer install it. Don't trust myself. Thanks!
Do you have or remember the part numbers for this? Looked at online Honda wholesale and can’t find anything. Haven’t called the dealer as I just stumbled upon your video that it even existed. Thanks and awesome video!
Thanks for a well done and informative video.
Thanks for posting. Went very smooth, as shown.
A great job on your part showing us all the works that needs to be done. But a rip off on Honda's part when this should have been standard equipment off the lot.
Jason I love that black H in the matte finish can you send me a link to where you bought it thanks Oscar
Great and informative video, Jason. Thank you!
nice Jason ... thank you...! I saw on a prev comment you said this one only works w the keys... do you by any chance know any that works w the remote? I do have an '18 Black Edition. Also, I saw your bed cover.. does it limit the opening of the bed trunk? (sorry if this question is repeated, my ipad died on me when tried to comment earlier!)
Awesome!! Thanks for taking the time to do this : )
Would you have the Honda part numbers for this change. I've been down at their shop twice now with no luck. Thanks Kerry
I just did this today. Great tutorial. Thank You !!!
Only 1 issue. The screws which hold the camera in place will strip. The default hole in the plastic is too small. Pain in the buttocks.
glad video helped!
Great video. Next time include the part number 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome video, Keep it up :)
Ps: I just bought a 2011 ridgeline and WOW I love it, and started to pimp it a bit and the videos will be on my channel soon :)
what about the 1st gen Ridgeline? Are the parts the same between the generations? I would think Honda wouldn't change much regarding the latching mechanism in the tailgate
Excellent Instructor
hi can you put a link where you get the tailgate for the 2017 Ridgeline. ty
Wow love to get the parts number for the tail gate lock try the dealer still can't get it for 2007 Ridgeline
Was, like others wondering about cost of new parts. Or maybe I missed? Thanks!
When i got this years ago now it was about 200
What is the part number?? I went to 2 different dealers and neither of them were able to help me find the part that I was looking for. Thanks
Very helpful video tutorial. I want to buy the lock kit for my Honda Ridgeline 2017. I just do not know part name and number. If you can assist my that would be amazing.
Sorry I just walked up to Honda parts counter and asked and I paid and they gave it to me
Appreciate it. I think I have a project.
Will the gate lock and unlock by using the remote?
I just bought a 2019 ridgeline and the truck bed doesnt lock. So far this is the only place ive seen that says honda didnt include a locking mechanism on the truck bed door. I've even called a honda dealer. They told me 180$ to diagnose the problem. Called honda themselves and they said take it to a dealership because it should lock. Seems like i should just buy this locking mechanism.
Does it have a key hole on the latch?
@@jasonin2details negative.
thank you, great job
I only received one key with the locking mechanism, Is that correct?
guess what the 2020 ridgeline has...
a lock on the tailgate that is actuated by the remote!
Ya of course! At least they listened
Also rear doors that open further. There is also an easy fix for that, just like this locking tail gate at least
What are the Honda part numbers?
Very nice thank you
What bed topper do you have in this video?
What website did you buy it on?
How much does the part cost?
Will it open and close with the remote? Or just the key? Thanks
MIne is just the key. The new 2020 model has this standard via remote
Can you send the link where to buy all the parts? I have the 2018 rtl-e
I got at dealer parts counter
where can I get a tail lock for my 2017 Ridgeline hobda
Very good 👍.
Is there a way to make this tailgate lock work electronically? I have the pop and lock for my topper so trying to find out how to make the tailgate electric as well.
There is an aftermarket company that makes an electronic one. I dont remember who it is. However I do know its a mess to run all the power into there.
@@jasonin2details I went ahead and did this here are the details. Wiring is a piece of cake. The issue you will run into is the after market electric lock has its own metal plate that will not work in combination with the new honda locking handle metal plate. With that said, you need the beefed up parts that come with the new honda locking handle as the original plastic piece that holds the metal wire for the side opening will bust without it, mine did immediately. So if you want to go electric like I did you need to buy the new honda handle but only use the beefed up parts and use your existing handle, and don’t bother purchasing the lock mechanism of course.
Is there a link to purchase these items?
No cause I bought them at the parts counter at the honda dealer
Good video 👍
You have a link to where to purchase the replacement part?
Sorry I don't. I just went to parts desk at dealer
@@jasonin2details thanks I really appreciate it.
Does this kit work on a 2017?
How much the parts cost
Have no idea they came out with a lock...
Great video, but 16:40....I would have had those keys in my pocket, just in case!!
Part numbers?
The locking mechanism is P/N 08Z07-T6Z-100D and the handle part numbers are based on color:
White Diamond Pearl (paint code: NH-603P) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-110EL
Lunar Silver Metallic (paint code: NH-830M) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-120E
Crystal Black Pearl (paint code: NH-731P) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-130E
Modern Steel Metallic (paint code: NH-797M) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-140E
Obsidian Blue Pearl (paint code: B-588P) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-150E
Forest Mist Metallic (paint code: G-537M) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-160E
- Note: Some sites list it as Forest Mist Pearl (paint code: G-537P) but the P/N remains the same
Deep Scarlet Pearl (paint code: R-561P) = P/N 08Z07-T6Z-170E
what bed cover?
What bed cover do you have?
It's a Lomax tri fold hard cover
Would you give me the website to buy this tailgate lock? thanks
got it at my local Honda dealer.
Here's the instructions: www.collegehillshonda.com/instructions/ridgeline/2019/tailgatelock.pdf
Well now I know what the tech at Honda did wrong. He used the old rod to control the unlatching mechanism.
Unbelievable.
There is a new tailgate lock for the 2020 model.
ya I know and its electric i think
What is the part number?
Your local Honda Dealer Parts counter will have it. Thats where and how I got mine
The swingout option for my tailgate stopped working after this install. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Most likely one of the replacement rods was put in backwards or not at all.
@@jasonin2details I spent 2 hours making sure that I was doing it exactly as seen on video.
This is the last time I ever repair something myself. Time to just take it to the shop and pay someone $200 so I don't spend 3 weeks on such a small problem.
dealer cost with parts is $300
Link?
I got it at the dealer parts counter. I did not order online
2017 Ridgeline come with cd player?
not in the US. Some Canada one do. It can be a dealer option
@@jasonin2details Thank you, Jason
Funny you didn't mention the socket to remove the handle at the beginning and you better have an extension long enough to get down into the bed to remove the original handle. It's not as easy as it looks and there are many things that can go wrong. Even my dealer struggled with it and did not get it right the first time. The new handle was not catching and disengaging the latch properly or at all. Had to take it back and it's still not working properly and this is with a Honda tech doing the install.
If you didn't have all the proper tools and a video like this to help it would not be for your average non mechanic like me. It's just not that simple.
Major mistake by Honda here not including this from the factory.
Your video was very informative. It gave me the confidence I needed to order the Kit from Honda . When it arrives I am all set to install. Thanx
Jason , I finally had the chance to install the new Tailgate lock . Took my time & had it done in just under 30 minutes . Thank-you again for such a great video .
This video was awesome! Just did the install on my 18 RL!
👍
Will this also lock the setting swing function?
Yes both directions
