I made the comment on GN's waste of sand video on the 5800x, that the 5800x was actually perfectly positioned as a 10900k killer, being about the same price for slightly better performance. Vs the 11900k it's an even better buy. Doesn't hurt that the 5800x is usually in stock at reasonable prices these days.
I just got the 5800X with an X570 motherboard and a 980 Pro NVMe for very good prices, a few days before Intel's 11th gen dropped. Man, I feel so good now.

Unless you have an ungodly GPU and play at stupid low settings the 2700 still does absolutely fine. CPU gaming benchmarks apply to very few people in most instances.
@@andersjjensen Yea I actually love the 2700, it was great value for what I needed. I run it with a Sapphire 5700xt Nitro, so it's a fairly balanced system and has treated me well. It's just funny to see it included in benchmarks with the big boys lol

@@arkdesign9517 nah 5800x ran hot for me with a 120mm rad water cooler that came stock with my prebuilt, when I built my pc into a new case and used a kraken z73 cooler temps dropped from 70 degrees with no load to low 40’s with no load and gets to 70 degrees under load after a few hours. So it runs warm unless you don’t invest in a quality cooler imo
The reason why intel did this is simple: to make Alder lake look artificially better when compared to the previous generation. Can't get the "up to 2x multithreaded performance" without a multithreaded performance regression.

11900K gets 3700 points in passmark singlethread score while using half the cache of a Zen 3 5800X. That's impressive for the microarchitecture. FX9590 is still slower than my 8 year old i7-4700MQ between 30 and 45 watts and clocked at 3.4GHz. It's like how Apple M1 between 7 and 14 watts gets a little more than 1700 points in Geekbench 5 singlethread score at 3.2GHz making Intel and AMD desktops looking like Bulldozer in comparison. Very exciting to see how Alder Lake will perform and fix all of this.

This is what I think happened. Intel's recently gotten new (and what seems to be) competent leadership, and this processor design was probably clogging up resources for a while. So they decided to just end the development early and ship it, focusing all their efforts now on their new 10nm design. Doesn't explain the dumbass price though.

Moore's law is dead. Both Intel and AMD did very poorly, almost 10 years to double the singlethread perfomance for an i7-2600K while Apple does this for their M1 chip at 7-14 watts and 3.2GHz of clockspeed... x86 is in a huge trouble...

I used to always buy i7 CPUs because they were, at the time, a great middle position between the i5 and i9 CPUs. But now that the i5s have hyperthreading they're the better deal for performance per dollar.

Intel somehow created a spiritual successor of that space heater called FX-9590 and produces way more heat (benchmarks from TechPowerUp shows it producing an insane 433 watts under stress tests...) no wonder Steve said he's seeing glimpses of Phenom vs Bulldozer.

I have granted your wish Steve. As of writing this post, I have actually found a use case for and bought an 11900k. It's currently on sale on Newegg and I picked one up with an MSI Z590 Unify for ~$450. I will be using it mostly for photo editing which still uses high single thread performance and at most 8 cores. I also plan to do some video editing and unlike 10th gen, 11th gen supports PCIE 4.0 for better storage and GPU performance and it's implementation of quick sync supports 4:2:2 10 bit video which 10th gen lacks. 11th gen also has more DMI lanes and supports Thunderbolt 4 for better bandwidth and speeds for my external storage. In order to get similar features/performance out of 12th gen, I would have needed to spend twice as much.
I somehow found one of these at a back shelf in my old employer’s office. And they are not even in the realm of technology, it is a child care program that they run.

2023 and I just picked one of these up for $280. It's always worth it to pick up parts like these a few years after launch. The price matches the value much closer. I just upgraded my rig to a 3080ti, 32gb of 4000mhz ram, and this i9 11900k for under $1000.

This was very helpful! I just bought the 5950X, but I'm now finding the 11900K beats it in single core processing which is necessary for DAWs/Music Production. This video makes me feel better LOL - but even though the 11900K is a little better with single cores, does that mean the doubling of cores in the 5950 makes it even better for VSTs? (There isn't a whole lot of love in bench tests for musicians/producers LOL)
I have a 5900X and I am a music producer. I used to hold Intel on a pedestal for it's superior single thread performance Nowadays, the single thread performance difference between Intel and AMD is negligible, and you'd get much more return from investing in a 5950X instead due to its higher core count - more cores is more plugins. Paired with using Reaper (possibly the lightest and most optimised DAW out there), I have yet to even find the limit of my 5900X. My only other Intel machine is a laptop with an i5-9300H at 4c/8t. It's inherently an unfair comparison, I'm aware, but the limit of this CPU (with 16GB RAM and SSD) seems to be close to a full orchestra project, with instances of plugins or sample libraries for every common instrument ranging from strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and such. Using the 5900X, my largest projects so far have been full metal band (guitars, bass, drums, sometimes vocals and all the plugins and processing involved) in addition to the full orchestra, and still with zero stuttering of any sort. Sure, perhaps you could have slightly lower latency with a 11900K, but you'd hit the plugin limit sooner than if you would with a 5950X. Currently, AMD is the better choice for music production. Especially if you ever want to record a video using OBS at the same time as running your DAW project, or indeed edit those videos later. We've all seen AMD thoroughly best Intel in almost every metric that matters. Maybe Intel's 12th gen will change that, but AMD is also working on something too Your 5950X was the best choice you could've made at this moment in time

Well assuming they continue their tradition of a new “gen” of motherboards or even a new socket for every 2 “gens” of CPU then the only real advantage is the 8 lanes of PCI-E 3.0 for a 2nd PCI-E device, bringing it more on par with AMD’s B550 and X570 from a practical point of view. But again, this only matters at all if you actually have or will have a 2nd PCI-E device which is like 25% of people at best. Otherwise, it’s the mere convenience of not requiring a BIOS flashback update. That’s a rather short list of reasons for Z590 to exist. Kind of like Z390.

FX9590 is still slower than my 8 year old i7-4700MQ between 30 and 45 watts and clocked at 3.4GHz.
It's like how Apple M1 between 7 and 14 watts gets a little more than 1700 points in Geekbench 5 singlethread score at 3.2GHz making Intel and AMD desktops looking like Bulldozer in comparison.
Very exciting to see how Alder Lake will perform and fix all of this.

This is what I think happened. Intel's recently gotten new (and what seems to be) competent leadership, and this processor design was probably clogging up resources for a while. So they decided to just end the development early and ship it, focusing all their efforts now on their new 10nm design.

I used to always buy i7 CPUs because they were, at the time, a great middle position between the i5 and i9 CPUs. But now that the i5s have hyperthreading they're the better deal for performance per dollar.

I have granted your wish Steve. As of writing this post, I have actually found a use case for and bought an 11900k. It's currently on sale on Newegg and I picked one up with an MSI Z590 Unify for ~$450. I will be using it mostly for photo editing which still uses high single thread performance and at most 8 cores. I also plan to do some video editing and unlike 10th gen, 11th gen supports PCIE 4.0 for better storage and GPU performance and it's implementation of quick sync supports 4:2:2 10 bit video which 10th gen lacks. 11th gen also has more DMI lanes and supports Thunderbolt 4 for better bandwidth and speeds for my external storage. In order to get similar features/performance out of 12th gen, I would have needed to spend twice as much.
GN is always savage with their titles when it needs too.

This was very helpful! I just bought the 5950X, but I'm now finding the 11900K beats it in single core processing which is necessary for DAWs/Music Production. This video makes me feel better LOL - but even though the 11900K is a little better with single cores, does that mean the doubling of cores in the 5950 makes it even better for VSTs? (There isn't a whole lot of love in bench tests for musicians/producers LOL)

I have a 5900X and I am a music producer. I used to hold Intel on a pedestal for it's superior single thread performance
Nowadays, the single thread performance difference between Intel and AMD is negligible, and you'd get much more return from investing in a 5950X instead due to its higher core count - more cores is more plugins.
Paired with using Reaper (possibly the lightest and most optimised DAW out there), I have yet to even find the limit of my 5900X.
My only other Intel machine is a laptop with an i5-9300H at 4c/8t. It's inherently an unfair comparison, I'm aware, but the limit of this CPU (with 16GB RAM and SSD) seems to be close to a full orchestra project, with instances of plugins or sample libraries for every common instrument ranging from strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and such.
Using the 5900X, my largest projects so far have been full metal band (guitars, bass, drums, sometimes vocals and all the plugins and processing involved) in addition to the full orchestra, and still with zero stuttering of any sort.
Sure, perhaps you could have slightly lower latency with a 11900K, but you'd hit the plugin limit sooner than if you would with a 5950X. Currently, AMD is the better choice for music production.
Especially if you ever want to record a video using OBS at the same time as running your DAW project, or indeed edit those videos later. We've all seen AMD thoroughly best Intel in almost every metric that matters. Maybe Intel's 12th gen will change that, but AMD is also working on something too

Well, this at least explains why somebody would want to put a 10-series part into a motherboard with the new chipset.
Well assuming they continue their tradition of a new “gen” of motherboards or even a new socket for every 2 “gens” of CPU then the only real advantage is the 8 lanes of PCI-E 3.0 for a 2nd PCI-E device, bringing it more on par with AMD’s B550 and X570 from a practical point of view. But again, this only matters at all if you actually have or will have a 2nd PCI-E device which is like 25% of people at best. Otherwise, it’s the mere convenience of not requiring a BIOS flashback update. That’s a rather short list of reasons for Z590 to exist. Kind of like Z390.
