I grew up in the National Parks because my father was an NPS Naturalist. In the early 1960's we were at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. There is a North and a South unit where the bison roam wild. The south unit is managed to keep the herd size between 200 to 400 bison and the north unit is managed to keep the herd size between 100 and 300 bison. I remember being out at the corral while the bison were being branded, using liquid nitrogen. They were also being inspected and given shots. I was in 3rd grade at the time and I remember picking wild plums and chokecherries.

Thanks Dusty! Wow that bull bison is a huge handsome devil! That’s a good looking herd I’m glad the national parks are working on keeping that herd healthy. Bison are proven to be so important to the ecosystem in North America. Parks Canada figured that out fast when they lost the Banff herd. The herd moved off north and the ecosystem around Banff changed dramatically.
Anyway we have a herd in Banff national park now and the wolves are returned as well and for now everything is as it should be.

Great to see the new pasture in use. I've been watching the fence being built over the past couple of years as I came to the park. I've been coming to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Platt National Park for my entire very long life. When I was little we would stop to look at the bison or crane our necks as Dad drove on by. For anyone traveling across country and interested this is a great little park and there is a lot of history here. My great great grandfather was a Chickasaw Lighthorse Policeman and lived in Sulphur, not very far from Cross Timbers Bison. Thank's for the update!
