    As someone who is around very large equipment for work... I can tell you.. It never ceases to amaze me... that a 15 cent part, or at least a very small one, can stop million dollar equipment. Our mothers were right... little things matter.

    Thanks for that video! I’m a 63 year old student pilot going for my PPL, and videos like this are great inspiration to me, specially how you showed (I think) exceptional situational awareness, made excellent decisions. I didn’t see if there was a checklist, but you tried all the logical and possible checks while in the air for troubleshooting the deicing boots, and then just calmly accepted that they weren’t going to work and worked the problem, all with calm and even enthusiasm.
    Also, your video editing was great. I’m used to steam gauges, so I learned a little about glass panels because you showed it so well when appropriate, and had a lot of different camera cuts.
    Mainly though, I’m not schooled on IFR, and was wondering if, in the beginning before problems were you flying IFR and on a flight plan? I ask because I’m not sure how that works and before I realized you were IFR rated, was shocked at how casually you were flying in the clouds. We VFR students and pilots get that “you have about 90 seconds before you spin” etc. but I wasn’t sure if when IFR rated but flying VFR then hit clouds if you just hold course, etc or declare to ATC that you are switching to IFR?
    Anyway, great job! Going to watch more of your videos now. Thanks!

      shader26 good observation. Yes, if there is an emergency checklist covering this, it absolutely should be used. And yes, he was on an IFR flight plan. That sequence on the ground at the very beginning was picking up his IFR clearance.

    Rime ice is tinny little crystals, but I saw large frozen droplets on the PAX side windshield. and it seems like the boots were actually expanding [expansion zone pattern visible at 10:30], but not clearing. PS. what was OAT on takeoff? looked like a white knuckler clearing obstacles at the end. Does the 50/70 rule apply to Malibus? [70% of rotation speed by 50% of runway length]

    Great video. Awesome ADM. One point that may have kept you clear of the wx. You took a heading of 010 to keep you clear which looking at the map and the HSI should've been just good enough. However it looks like you had a pretty stiff left quartering tailwind from the SW pushing you into the wx. A 360 or even 355 would likely have worked better imho. Unless I misread something. • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  4 года назад

      Descending would have put me back in the clouds and back in the temperature range for more icing. At -19c I knew I wouldn't pick up more. The leading edge of the wing was not clear when I made the decision to divert and, we verified the tailplane icing visually. It was quite a bit worse than what was on the wing. Diversion decision was made because of the ice we would pick up in the descent into Chicago.

    Can you be so kind to tell us what are the differences between the 550 engine and the old 520? Theoretically you might have seen better torque numbers at high altitude with high manifold pressures compare with the old 520. Is this the case? And if so it would be wise to go for 3 blade props conversion to take advantage of that new plus in torque?
    Love how you are updating your Malibu and giving us real world feedback about it!

    • @MalibuFlyer
      @MalibuFlyer  4 года назад

      Hello. The TSIO-550 has a slightly longer stroke than the 520 which results in a rated 350HP as opposed to the 310HP of the 520. The STC that governs the 550 in the early Malibu's requires that the manifold pressure be limited to 35.5" thereby de-rating it to 310HP.

    • @diegoandresbustamante2742
      @diegoandresbustamante2742 4 года назад

      @@MalibuFlyer So. You have a bigger engine which at high altitudes put the turbocharger compressor in a more relaxed place on its efficency map, achieving more of those 310hp at high altitude than the 520. But power at max rpm is limited to 310hp. Nevertheless the engine has more torque in all the rpm range so you can run it lean at a load of 45% and achieve better thrust. So following my logic, your fuel consumption must be higher. What remains to check is if that added speed keeps the range as before but with the added decrease in time.
      I really like seeing your trips and how the Malibu is getting better with time. And your are starting to convince your wife about the importance of adding a wing pod with a weather radar, next mod?

    Great job diverting, considering the weather going into ORD with boots inop, you really didn’t have much of a choice.
    The only alternative I could think of was, if
    you descended rapidly, staying clear of the weather, until getting below the freezing level, then proceeding onto ORD. I don’t know what the freezing level was that day in the Chicago area, so that may, or may not have worked.
    I think a super great idea with 8.5 hrs. of fuel. Like you said, it sure does give you lots of options, which you really never know if you’ll need it, so better to have it.
    A couple of observations :
    x no 29.92 STD climbing through FL205
    I see later that you caught that.
    x it looked like pretty good ice on the front
    windshield.
    do you have a hot plate, or alcohol or TKS fluid for your front windshield ?
    x you might have cut it kind of close on the weather, although I do realize that weather was most likely further East than depicted on your weather display.
    Does the Malibu have an option for hanging an airborne weather radar antenna pod on the wing ?
    That would give you a real time precip picture to “supplement” your time dated satellite nexrad picture on your screen.
    x that right screen with the approach plate, are you able orient that to track up, instead of North up ?
    Overall, very very good !!
    Thank-you for sharing your video.

      WX radar was an option for the Malibu from the factory. IIRC, it was a bit of cash for it though. (I don't have one, but remember looking at them some years ago).

      Hi Daniel. Spot on with all your points. The nose view camera is mounted on the co-pilots windshield and that side is not heated. The MFD screens can be configured for either track or north up. I’m a north up guy.

    Really enjoy watching your videos. I have long considered the PA-46 550 or a Vitatoe P210. Currently fly a 210 with a IO550p upgrade. I had some fun with the AOPA comparing the Bonanza vs Centurion a few years back. I would love to see a flyoff between the PA-46 550 and the Vitatoe P210.

    So what kind of mount does it take to place a GoPro on the wing tip and still expect to have it when you land?

    Nice job on the divert. However, I had some thoughts. When you evaluated your takeoff performance based on the conditions, what was the result based on the runway you selected? Should the engine have failed, just prior to rotation, would you have had enough runway to stop? Also, would you perform a system test of your de-ice equipment, prior to each flight (and especially prior to flight in known-icing conditions)?

    I love the wing camera view! That doesn’t affect performance in any way does it?

    I spent many thousands chasing the same problem, replaced both Vacuum pumps and the pressure valve($$$). Turns out a ground wire had not been connected when my engine was replaced after my engine failure. I am sure Kevin could have figured it out in 10 minutes but he had not opened his shop yet. My plane is there in annual now.

      Hi Eric. It was the same wire that broke on mine... On my last annual, he found about 10 things within the first 5 minutes of looking at it. He knows right where to look that's for sure.

    Is there any noticeable increase in fuel consumption because of the GoPro in the wing tip?
