- In today's video, we showed the renovation of the Dengelfix scythe, which is more than 100 years old.
This device is screwed to the table, the scythe is guided through the device and the blade is flattened by turning the crank.
This lever regulates the width of the blade, narrow and wide, it should be 3 - 6 mm.
Finally, lightly drag the scythe with a whetstone. The use of the scythe has been documented in Europe since the early Iron Age, especially the so-called short scythe mounted on the mower at an obtuse angle. Since the Middle Ages, long scythes, similar to today's, have been replaced.
And nowadays scythes are used very little. They have been replaced by mechanical equipment such as agricultural and domestic lawn mowers. If you liked our video, leave subscription, like, share.
And one last question at the end of the ball are you ever scythe? or have you tried mowing with this traditional scythe on the grass?

I found this very interesting, I worked as a kennel maid for a time as a teenager. One of my jobs there was to use a scythe on the grass which the dogs could play on. I sharpened this with a whet stone . I was fifteen, my first job after leaving school. Now I will be seventy next month, This brought back lots of memories.
Grandpa, who passed in the 1960's, cut the yard with a scythe. Every time I see a Grim Reaper I'm reminded of Grandpa. I still have his scythe hanging in the garage, it's in need of sharpening.
Thank you for your story Suzy :)
Thank you for your story :)
Mine too
Dengelfix - german (may be bavarian) word "dengeln" means sharpening a scythe by hammering
Also in austria a household name...
Its a two part german „Lego“ word…
Dengeln means sharpening by hammering, fix means fast, so its a fast sharpener.
Thanks so much for that explanation as I was really curious as I am a "tool Nut" and was wondering~!
I think this Tool, is just made to straighten the blade of Sickle..🤔
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
Good morning, Vietnam!
Ditto!
Jedině ruční naklepávání. Pavel🇨🇿
Another excellent and carefully done restoration. I would never have guessed this device was for sharpening scythes. I wondered if it was a hand tool for b ending metal tubing. Thank you
if i understand the comments below the video, it's not actually for sharpening the scythe, but for flattening the blade after it has become kinked and warped from use. i suppose that such scythes are probably quite thin metal and they easily become dented
This one had me guessing to the end. I used a Scythe at my Grand-Pa's farm in Lemoore CA, USA.
It was a short one he said but to me, 8-10 years old, it looked like a sword attached to a shovel handle, lol now.
But to get the dents, from hitting Rocks, out of the blade he used a small square faced heavy hammer and then a file to sharpen it.
The funny thing is, when I was about 16, Dad told me that Grand Pa really did like us to come over because back then I could find Rocks he never could find when cutting the high grass. Fun Times!
When i was a kid we had a tiny anvil (about 2 fingers wide) stuck in a large wooden log that you sit on. Then you use a large flat hammer and that anvil to reshape the blade before using the oval whetstone to sharpen it. If the damage was really bad, we had a handcranked large (around 2 feet or 60cm diameter) grindingstone wheel too that would get all kinds of farming tools sharp again. Good old times...

I thank you Pat :)
I have used a scythe on tall grasses. When sharpened properly, it works great! Easy to use, you get into a certain back and forth rhythm.
We also had a scythe at the summer cabin, more convenient than lawn mower when you have tall grass. Almost zero maintenance, works every time.
I have seen professionals flatten their scythe with a hammer and a special small anvill. In duch we call this 'haren' (hair, meaning making as thin as a hair). This was over 50 years ago and the crafsmen were already nearly pensioned. They were very skillful. Nice video again, I never saw a semi automised machine like this.
Sugar cane machetes were often sharpened with the hammer method as well
I love it. Those huge exposed ball bearings are awesome
Fantastic job!!! Looks better than new!!!
Fun fact: They also used scythes in Japan and China! In fact the kusarigama weapon was based off of a hand scythe!!!
And the name of that 'hand-scythe' is 'sickle'. in. English. Not so much fun than real sickle the multi tool of patch and field. There are heavy sickles enough to cut wrist-thick woods.
Sickle had little advantage as decent weapon so never be a popular choice. The advantage of sickle weapon was concealed weapon - disguising local petit peasants. I mean really. That's a true fact of historical ninja not NINJA
This is way cool.. Never knew such a machine even existed! Great restoration.
Did you notice that I've most recently seen in the news about Armenia? I've seen what they already have. They nowadays have these 4-door sports cars that levitate. As a matter of fact, I've seen their van that levitates. 🕴 🇦🇲 😳 🤔 😅 😐 🤣 🇦🇲
Another beautiful restoration!
Thanks!
Years ago (late '70's) I was a volunteer in US National parks, forests, and Designated Wilderness areas.
On one occasion a small fire got started near a grassland area adjacent to a forest, both of which were within the boundaries of a designated Wilderness Area. We needed to cut enough of the tall grass to cut off the fire's path to the forest. Since no motor-driven devices (among many other things) are allowed in a Wilderness we had to cut the grass with large scythes to successfully cut off the fires path. It might have been kind of fun but for the urgency. The scythes? The Ranges kept such tools for just such situations. And razor-sharp!
Wirklich erstaunlich, was die Leute damals bereits alles bauen konnten.
Ebenso erstaunlich, was ihr daraus gemacht habt. Erstklassige Arbeit
Frohe Weihnachten wünsche ich.
Another outstanding restoration and a very interesting device. I really liked Veronica’s presentation, I did not understand a word but still enjoyed it.
You have an uncanny knack for finding unusual devices which makes your restorations even that much more interesting.
Read the words in the description for what she said.
I didn't understand a word either. I do understand she is a beautiful woman and her eyes are almost magnetic.
I wouldn't have known what that was.... We used a hammer and anvil to sharpen syths and sycles... Great find and Class Job on the finish...
Thank you John Patrick :)
Seen a lot of old things . That is not one of them . Cheers . Clear Laquer tip , Spot on
There are some inventions that America can't beat Armenia in. 🇺🇸 😳 😑 😐 😒 🙄 🇺🇸
I used a scythe a few times when I was young, before my dad bought a mower.
I was used to sharpen it lightly with a whetstone, but at the end of the job the scythe had to be re-sharpened by hammering the cutting edge on a special anvil.
I wasn't aware this tool was a thing!
Thank you :)
Those little stop-motion moments add a nice little touch of whimsy. Excellent restoration as always!
Another excellent restoration. I remember many years ago looking for a left handed scythe, with no luck.

My Father used a scythe on our small holding some years when the grass was more than waist high and none of the mowers could cope. I tried it a few times and it was hard work, My father could do the 2 acre field in a couple of days.
Lovely restoration of an ingenious sharpening technique. Lovely selection of obscure items you come across.
Good morning from north Texas
Now I see what the device is used for. It is a scythe sharpener, and it works. Good job restoring it.
time travel device!....what do I win?
I actually own a long and short scythe, but never really had to use one. However, when I was young, I did have to regularly use a sickle for several years, which is similar... Nice restore as always!
Surprise around every corner. What a great trip back intime. Used a scyth when I was young..
That makes me happy, thank you Donald :)
Danke Thomas :)
I love the "what is it restoration" videos trying to figure out what the machine does. The fact I don't speak the language just makes it more of a challenge. It never even occurred to me this device was a sharpener.
thank you for this surprise video. Stay safe in these turbulent times. You have become like a friend. of the family. Prayers and blessings

Wow again. Beautiful!

The trouble with the Gilligan's Island cast and crew members is that they never depicted any of the characters who are good Russian citizens. Even though the Holy Bible books are: Ezekiel and the Revelation, they said nothing about the good Russian citizens.
Great job - well done! My father used a scythe especially in tall grass, which an ordinary (mechanical) mower wouldn't catch. Before this "machine" came up, they would 'dengel' a scythe with an anvil and a hammer - cold hammering makes the steel very hard, so the edge will hold much longer. The purpose of the 'Dengelfix' is to imitate that cold hammering to create a very sharp and hard edge. Touching it up with a whetstone afterwards makes it a razor! The 'dengel'-process only hardens the very edge, otherwise it would crack and chip, so you can't use a scythe with a fully hardened blade. I tried it two or three times (with very little sucess), you have to get used to it for sufficient results and need years of experience to really master it.
It's still in use either for very tall grass or in steep mountain grasslands in the alps and elsewhere.
Keep up your great work and stay safe
Thank you for the explanation :)
Beautifully renovated as always. I'm impressed with what you can do. Merry Christmas And Happy New Year To You
Thank you for Jerek's favor. Have a nice holiday :) Radek and Veronica
Ahoj.
👍👍👍👍👍
I'll also tell you what the problem is with the Gilligan's Island comedy series. They never depicted/showed me which character represents a good Russian citizen. That's something that's missing in the series. They have to know that some Russians are good people. Even though that's not what the 2 Holy Bible books are: Ezekiel and the Revelation say about Russia. Magog is the biblical word for Russia. If I tell you this, it will be no surprise to you. Even though I tell you about what Samantha Reed Smith and the King's kids did from 1978 to 1983. How they've helped educate every Russian child with the Holy Bible. They definitely brought on the fall of Soviet communism.
About Samantha Reed Smith and the King's kids who came to Russia, they definitely brought on the fall of Soviet communism from 1978 to 1983.
Beautiful restoration, as always. Don’t worry about your English, it’s better than most who live in the United States.
dobrý den,kosu jsem naklepával(a to s přípravkem-trn a dva kloboučky) před asi tak 20 lety,nedávno jsem zkoušel síct.Šlo my to mizerně,holt křoviňák je křoviňák.krásné video,hezké vánoce a Šťastný nový rok.Karel L

Yes I have used a scythe before. I tried to cut down some Tall Grass behind my barn and soon found out that was the wrong way to go. I hung it up on the barn wall as decoration and it's been there ever since. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
I currently do use a scythe to cut hay for my livestock. I have restored an antique american (english) style scythe for this purpose. But I also use a European style scythe which I peen by hand using a peening jig. I am aware of several different machines for this purpose, but have never before seen this one.
Love the videos, keep up the good work.
Thank you for your story Mike. Good luck on the farm :) Radek
I though I had seen about every farm tool ever but thats a new one on me . Great job.
Excellent presentation. Congratulations on the restoration and the beautiful girl presentation
as a kid on the farm in the 1970's, one of my chores was to use a two handed scythe to cut weeds around the barn that we didn't want the animals to eat because they were poisonous to them, and we didn't want to use weed killers for the same reason. let me tell you, a few hours swinging one of them was a real workout.
Thanks for your story :)
Hello Radek & Veronica beautiful restoration good job have a happy Christmas and stay safe
Very cool 👍 would never have guessed it was used for that.

Díky Zdeňku :)
I never knew such a tool existed. It sure would have made life easier when I was clearing my yard with a scythe, as one of the blades was bent. A lot of work to swing one of those scythe. But they don't run out of gas or trimmer cord. I still have, and use a scythe at times., after 70 years.
Great, thanks :)
I didn't know such machines existed before I watched your restoration. I'm very pleased that you demonstrated its use at the end of your video. I have never used a scythe myself but have watched other people cutting rushes to be used for roofing thatch. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from your friends in England.
I saw this device and used it for the first time, I think the classic anvil and whetstone is easier to use :) Have a nice day friends :) Radek
Nice tool. I used to do the thinning with a pinching tool, an inch at a time. Move it over and pinch another inch.
Merry christmas and a happy New year to you and you family.
Super cool nicely done.
Encore MERCI
Great video as always, don’t know what it is,but attachés to table, work bench top, adjustable part holds down blades, knives, slicers to be sharpened maybe ,keep doing what your doing and carry on.😎😎😎👍👍👍
Great job, have a great Christmas & New Year , Stay Safe Friend !!!.
Good job checking for lead.
In the 1950s an elderly gent (WW1 veteran) I knew dressed , as he called it, his blade cold on an anvil with a ball peen hammer before he sharpened it. Interesting that there was a machine to do it as well.
Nicely done 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing
👍Good Job done ! My Dad hammered the scythes for the Farmers Long ago..... I knew this Maschine, but not such an early one, signed with Deutsches Reichs Patent D.R.P. Ist's before WW2.
Thanks for showing!👍
I thank you Rudi :)
This is the first in my book. I have never seen anything like this. I love all that you do. I leaen SOO much. Thanks again Granny90
Thank you so much :)
another great job . Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Sehr gute Restaurierung, und sehr schönes Video 👍👍👍 Am Besten gefällt es mir ab 17.39 😀😀😀 Wunderschöne Frau 💖 Velmi pĕkné 😀😀😀
That was made at the ironworks in Elterlein which is still very much in business.
Did not know o w what it was for..Merry Christmas🎄!!
I would have been a damn long time guessing that one !!! Great restoration.
Thank you for another fine restoration, especially since this is now a rare device but still useful to someone. I want a scythe - I have one particular part of my property that would benefit from cutting with a scythe, because there are too many obstacles to a modern lawnmower or yard tractor. But the price of a good scythe in the US discourages me from buying one. Your work in restoration is great, though some techniques are new to me the end resuslt is functional and beautiful, too. Please keep posting your videos, they are very enjoyable.
Thank you so much for the beautiful words :)
I DO have a large Scythe, and I have used it! It's GREAT for cutting very tall grass - understandable since it was made for reaping grain stalks. Now it's just used at Halloween for a Grim Reaper costume, although I have to use several layers of thick tape to protect the edge (since I refuse to file the edge off!).
I've never seen a machine like this before, and can understand that it would come in very handy during harvest when there's many people hand-mowing a field!
Thank you :)
Excellent set of fixed keys
thanks for all the tips, advice, secrets, etc. I bought 3 rusty, ir semi rusty projects yesterday...(corn sheller, coffee grinder, and raisin pitter, ).. I use such things, cause they're fun, and I get a little work out!... lol...merry Christmas!!
Vaše filmy se mi moc líbí. Děláte velmi dobrou práci, za kterou si vás vážím. Pozdravy z Polska.

Thank you again my father would use a file to sharpen with. Never saw one like this before. Excellent work.
Maybe it's really an easier file :) thanks Cecile
The metal on some scythe s are meant to be sharpened with a stone and some are sharpened with just straightening by hammering the edged straight again. Having this tool would have been wonderful. Could mount it on the wagon and refresh your edge in the field.
