Rusty old Excelsior nut grinder - Restoration

- Опубликовано: 2 апр 2020
- In today's episode I will renovate an old nut grinder. The grinder was pretty bad. The grinder had only part of the handle and the whole top hopper was missing.
Carrot Cake Recipe:
4 eggs, 1 and a quarter cup of oil (even olive), 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract (or maple syrup), 2 cups half-flour, 2 straight spoons of baking soda, 2 straight spoons of baking powder salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 3 cups grated coarse carrots (8-10pcs), 1 cup walnuts.
Some of the history of Porkert grinders:
Josef Porkert (February 2, 1828 Abertamy, Austria-Hungary - April 27, 1895 Skuhrov nad Bělou in the Eagle Mountains) was a Czech industrialist and founder of the company of the same name.
He studied at the Upper Academy in Příbram and in 1863 he became director of Rosenhütte in Skuhrov nad Bělou, the iron works of Count Hans Kolowrat founded in 1817. When the iron production was suspended in 1879, he rented the Josef Porkert plant in 1881 and converted it into foundry. He made stoves, pulleys and piano frames here. The plant produced cast-iron frames for the Antonín Petrof company in Hradec Králové and supplied other renowned piano manufacturers Bösendorfer, Hoffman-Czarny, Baumann, Ehrbar and others.
After Josef Porkert's death in 1895, his sons Wilhelm and Edward took over the company. They expanded the production to include kitchen machines, especially meat grinders and other hand grinders, which in the next decades were the focus of the company's production. In 1911 the annual production of "Porkert et al." Reached 100,000, and in 1929 already 400,000 kitchen machines. Three quarters of production went abroad. The main customers were companies in Poland, England and overseas. In the 1940s, electrical appliances and food processors were added.
In 1948 the company was nationalized and the bulk of the product range was moved to other plants. Since then, the plant in Skuhrov has produced only classic hand grinders. The 1992 restitution to the heirs of the Porkert family was not successful. In 2007, the company went into insolvency administration. He then transferred to the successor of Karavel Properties, who took over the factory in 2008. In 2010, traditional production was stopped.
Some kitchen machines manufactured by Porkert are exhibited in the Porkert machines exhibition in the Mlejn Museum in Ostrava, for which I have also renovated several grinders. (source wikipedia)

Action Index:
00:01 Introducing the Excelsior
00:34 Dismantling the grinder
01:45 Preparing for leaching
02:10 Sodium hydroxide application (take care when working with caustic. This is corrosive)
02:40 After 24 hours of leaching, rinse with water.
03:43 We'll make a new handle between the grinder. I used an old nail as a pin.
04:24 The wooden part is made of linden wood. Impregnated with alcohol stain, light oak shade. In the final coat of shellac.
09:44 It is necessary to finish the missing bearing of the crank pin.
12:00 I cleaned all parts with a steel brush.
14:15 Use of hydrochloric acid to lighten the faded sheet. (watch out for work)
14:47 For neutralization of hydrochloric acid we use - base. In our case, sodium hydroxide.
16:10 Sheets treated in this way will be easier to polish. Used cloth wheel and abrasive paste.
17:00 Production of the metal hopper for the grinder follows. I used an old can for that.
22:25 To unify the color of the tin top I put it in the fire for a moment. Then the procedure is the same as for other sheet metal parts.
22:45 Before spraying with base paint, glue the places where the paint is not.
28:05 Riveting the mill
28:36 I used a golden paint marker for gilding.
29:10 Assembly follows.
30:05 Comparison before and after renovation
30:21 Functionality test :)

Again, a silk purse from a sow's ear. Your attention to detail & your consideration for your viewers, (masking the welding arc) are very highly commendable. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much Willie :)
Good to see husband and wife working together and the little dog supervising.
:)
There is nothing wrong with being self taught. It shows your ability ingenuity and creativity in bringing these old kitchen appliances and gadgets back to usefulness.
Thank you ❤🇨🇿
Wonderful! I would like to thank you for the historical information in your explanation. It adds context to the restoration of this nut grinder. Because of the broken handle and missing pieces, a lot of people would have given up. I'm glad you saved this example of Czech industrial history. I enjoyed the close ups of your work on the wood lathe, and how you repaired the handle. Your creativity is always a joy to watch. THANK YOU and smiles from the USA.
Thank you very much for your comment. Pleased. I wish you good health.
Your restoration videos are the best on RUclips. They're very addictive once you start watching them. I think I liked this the best of all, it had a lot intricate repair work as well as new fabrication. Excellent job.
Thank you for your appreciation and for your nice comment.❤🇨🇿
Nicely done, you both. Thanks for bringing another piece of old school kitchen tools into the house. The work you both do is really appreciated by those of us who follow your videos. Be safe and we look forward to seeing you after the mess is over.

Wow. Replaced missing parts and perfect replacements. Matching as well. I can see the time it took to have final finish. Splendid.
Thank you very much. Greetings from the Czech Republic.
Well Congratulations! you are now tinsmiths too! in the old days a man would travel from town to town repairing pots & pans, he was called a tinkerer because of his tinwork , this was an awesome restoration because of your work with tin to fabricate missing parts, Thank You for your expertise!
I thank you :) Radek
Your grandchildrens surely will pass this grinder to their grandchildrens and it will still work the same as the day it left the Porkert factory.
Nice work!
Thank you 😉
I am so impressed, all that skills in one person, whit out fancy tools. Amazing job, and I really like the history of the maker.
Thank you Elisabeth :)
This brings back childhood memories!
Good job!
Отличная работа, очень аккуратная и качественная, спасибо за такое бережное отношение к вещам!
I was wondering what you were going to do with the broken handle, Your solution is genius! Amazing work with the restoration and the fabrication of the missing parts. I'm glad I'm a subscriber. I wish only the best for you and yours in this time of trials...Dan
Thank you for the comment, pleased me. Greetings from the Czech Republic, I wish you and your loved ones much health. Radek
(Ehemaliger Gottwald)
Very good job you did restoring that nut grinder. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. You even repaired the broken handle on it. Excellent work.
Another great restoration. And a very useful one. This is a keeper, for sure.

A gorgeous repair, a recipe for carrot cake (my favorite BTW), then a history lesson, what's not to love. Great job, it looks fantastic and I'd enjoy using one of those instead of a food processor!
Thanks William 😉

Your knowledge of the products you work on is really a bonus to the fine craftsmanship that you show. I really enjoyed this video especially after I saw how much you had to handcraft to complete. The hopper and push block were well done. Thanks for sharing this video with me and as always mask-up, be safe and looking forward to your next video.
Thank you Paul for being with us :)
There is so much about this that I find fascinating! You have some MAD tin smithing skills! Love that nail to handle pin transformation as well! Gonna have to steal THAT trick!

It's good...🇬🇧☺️
Hello. Another video that I haven't seen. In addition it reminds me of good memories. My mom had something like that. He wasn't as handsome as yours, but he did the same. At the end of the video when Veronica loots the nuts I remembered when I help my mom in the kitchen at Passover or Christmas. Often times I would take a spoon of the nuts especially after it mixed with sugar and vanilla. I loved it. What a good memory. Thank you very much for your video. You are a master at what you do. You breathe new life into old stuff. Gabriel (France).
Thank you for your story Gabriel. Yes, I remember that too. I enjoyed grinding nuts and rolls as a child :) Would you like a famous recipe from your mother? Veronika has set up her RUclips channel about cooking and baking, she would definitely like to try it :) Thanks Radek ruclips.net/channel/UCfEr2fPoAF0GVBuxUmSu2Iwvideos

I started out thinking what a wonderful job of restoring the handle and cleaning the nut grinder. But then you left the grinder for a carpentry and sheet metal project. I am glad my curiosity won and I stuck around to the finish. You did not drop a hint that a press was missing .
Great work. It sure was a complicated repair. And you did it very well.
Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
thank you

This was quite the project given all of the missing pieces, but the results were fabulous as always. I really like the backstory of the manufacturer you've added in the description. Loved watching this restoration, and I am glad I have found your channel, and of course subscribed. This restoration brought back memories - my Grandmother had a similar grinder and we used it to grind walnuts for the Christmas walnut rolls - back a long time ago in Hungary. Now, I have a Czech meat grinder - in Australia.
Thank you very much for watching Judit, you are welcome. Have a nice day from the Czech Republic Radek
