I feel like sega still CAN make sonic cool again (frontiers supersonic sections are good examples) but they're stuck with the restrictions they have for their stories and character writings so as a result those game's stories feel detached from the tone they're going for OR characters feel like cardboard cutouts of themselves. i feel like sega is so wounded from 06 that they cannot let go of restricting their character/stories and are always playing EVERYTHING safe but we know that's making everything even worse
I feel like you nailed it on the head with the playing it safe thing. And 06 definitely did long term damage to the franchise but I feel like sega could’ve just took that hit on the chin and still tried to create something special because they were a few glimpses to me like sonic colors and generations. And yea definitely, the writing of the stories have definitely made things a little more complicated to try new things around
I respect frontiers having alot of self reflecting and being mellow Cause I feel like thats made us look back the vibes before it, and I hope next game will be a fresh start and be brave again to rock the boat n take risks again. feel like frontiers supersonic fights have been in a step in the right direction as far as bringing back the cool.
In my humble opinion as a series fan, Sonic has always been a little cheesy/campy but the key difference was he was taken seriously. Around the start of what we now call the “Meta Era” in the 2010’s the series became self deprecating and very lighthearted. All the stakes and edge were taken out and Sonic became a quippy flanderized version of himself. Even with the spotty track record I have some faith in Sega tho, frontiers and the movies were a huge step in the right direction. I’m gonna let the next game and movie speak for themselves, most optimism I’ve had in a long time even if there’s a little bit of hope/cope sprinkled in lol
Oh most definitely Sonic had some cheesy aspects to him but that was still his thing you know what I’m saying. And I see what you’re saying with the no edge and no stakes thing when it comes to the meta era and I think they need to dabble in raising the stakes again at least one more time to see where it gets them, because I feel like sega is too scared to take risks and leaps again after 06. And yea the movies have definitely been a huge help as well
I think it’s because since sega believes that 90s to 2000s teenage rebel vibe that sonic had wasnt cool anymore so they tried to stray away from it but in the process kinda took away sonics personality
Yea I agree because Sonic was supposed to be this fast rebel and that it was all him, and I think they could’ve wrote him in a way to branch out but still kind of keep that rebel like core personality
So I've always had this thought, I'll use Mario as an example. No matter what setting he is in, it always has the same tone. If Sonic were to stay the way he did in the Advenrure era, I feel like he'd still be cool. I'd go on. But I'm not sure how long comments can be.
Sadly, Sonic in Sega's eyes has /always/ been for kids or teenagers at the max. Frontiers was finally a break in the saturday morning stupidity that was seemingly cursed onto Sonic characters since like Sonic generations, that was the mark of just wildly dumbing down Sonic's gameplay to just Hold forward + Boost and a jump here and there and you'll beat most levels. It's good steps in the right direction, i doubt Sega will strike gold like this twice in a row these days, Next two or three games are gonna be ass before we get a Sonic Frontiers 2.
Sonic's personality is too clever/quippy nowadays. He isn't smart, necessarily. He's not like Spiderman where he always has the perfect comeback. Sonic would tell someone to go fuck themselves or eat shit before he made a clever wisecrack. Thats how he was in the adventure era.
Dark Age and Adventure Sonic eras are the best ngl. We had arguably the best voice cast (miss you Jason), some of the most unique, yet fun concepts (even if people hate them like Secret Rings, Black Knight, etc), and it really felt like Sega cared the most about Sonic during these times. Contemporary Sonic ain't bad, but it ain't the best either, I wish we could go back to those times tbh.
Yea that era had a certain spark to it and that’s when sega was willing to try things and I’m actually doing a secret rings video soon so be on the lookout for that one
@@Djammin14 yea true I believe once they figure out that magic he once had it’ll be better again. I just think they have a hard time with him in the 3d landscape
See to me frontiers wasn’t just flat out awful, more of an underwhelming thing to me tbh. It was literally just meh. It had potential with the open world thing but honestly it got repetitive quick and the final boss was pretty disappointing
Lol. You're just now realising this? I've been saying this for the last 15 years. Hell, I believe the last time he was "cool" was SA2. It's been down hill from then. Dude is a cornball now. But He's was built on that 90's aesthetic/personality and hasn't fully evolved from that or just got "stale"/"old". I feel SEGA's old asses needs some young, dedicated people to give that fresh modern feel of "cool" again. Because they don't know what do with him currently.
Nah I’ve realized this for a while but just made a video on it and yea making his aesthetic on the 90s and not somehow branching out and evolving him from that was a mistake on segas part
@@TyshaggyGaming And when did I say all of that? huh? You just assumed. I'm not talking about dialect or slang. Sonic needs a refresh/reboot to his whole aesthetic/character. The old heads at SEGA don't know what to do with him. Younger, dedicated fans (Like the ones who developed Sonic Mania) need to revamp his character/personality. He has gotten stale and corny over the years.
To me, Sonic is a bunch of corporate execs' ideas of what kids in the 90s thought was cool, and that concept has aged like milk. The idea of him being "cool" feels super forced, as it probably should coming from the spearhead of a massive corporate franchise. He's the "how do you do fellow kids" of mascots. This is coming from someone who was such a fan of sonic growing up that they started making video games because of him.
I feel like it worked at the time being for the kids and yea definitely it aged pretty badly. They could’ve molded him into a better direction of his own style
i dont agree with this him being cool had nothing to do with what was hip it was how he was characterized is what made him cool he wasnt just some skateboard kid Caricature he was an adventure lover and thrill seeker who does what he think was right and never played by the rules which were expressed in both the classics, 2d,and adventure games and spinoffs riders being a huge example the concept never aged like milk they just never had faith in the concept and kept changing after things kept going wrong for them.
I feel as though lately Sonic is getting a bit of his sauce back. Not enough, but close.
Yea I feel like things like sonic dream team, frontiers, and even the movies help a lot
"Rebellious" is the word you're looking for, Sonic has always been a "I don't care what you say" kind of character
Yea that’s the perfect word to describe him
Sonic Adventure felt like jumping into a pool during an early 2000’s dreamy rock music video and god I miss that vibe.
Beautiful description
Minus the awful UI

unrelated to the video but your voice is so soothing

They should just replace every Sonic game with Blue Spheres.
