I don't know detailed Tennis rules that apply these days but from what Stan was saying and how the commentators were agreeing to him, I would say that is true. Usually you can trust the commentators. At a GS event and especially the final, you can bet the organizers will put the best commentators available and one of the criteria of being a good commentator in sports is to know the rules inside out.

James Ashley the umpire is supposed to tell him. if a player takes a medical time out, his opponent is supposed to be told why, otherwise you could leave the court during a medical time out just because you were tired, or you wanted to break your opponents concentration.
Umpires let him get away with all sorts of things- repeatedly exceeding the serve time for instance. Shameful. And Nadal has had the cheek to argue angrily with them on occasions the rules have been enforced. Federer has on a few occasions won whole games quicker than Nadal has taken to serve.

Players do this all the time against Nadal too. Djokovic did it in the past several times. Federer did it before the fifth set at the AO two times. Nishikori even took a shower and was gone for 20 minutes during the olympics when they had to play the final set for the bronze medal without a reason he just left.

During the AO 2017 final, Federer took 1 real MTO, at 2 sets all, and BETWEEN SETS 4 and 5 (MTO between sets = normal, it's taking it during a set - and worse, down a break in that set - like Nadal did here that is a disturbance for the opponent), went out of the court a few minutes to get treated, and Nadal knew why (for the same thigh pain he had in the semi). Nadal then immediately broke Fed in the first game (so yeah... Fed was the one who was disturbed by his own MTO) ; then, at 1-2, Federer simply had the physio massage his thigh on the court at the change of ends for around the same amount of time of a normal change of ends, so nothing about that could have been a disturbance for Nadal (unless seeing Roger getting massaged gets him horny), and indeed, Nadal won his service game. Federer almost never took any MTOs during his career, but at 36, a player may need 1 or 2 MTO once a year at the end of a Grand Slam during a 3-4 hours match. In this match against Stan, Nadal was apparently injured, so taking a MTO during that match is ok (although the timing of this MTO was the worst for his opponent, taking it between Sets 1 and 2 would have been great). The thing is that Nadal's known for having taken MTOs often during his career, during sets, too often being down in the score when his opponents had momentum (did it against Fed at least 2-3 times), only to come back running like a rabbit, taking the momentum and crushing his opponents. So Stan's reaction is understandable ; in the middle of a set, up a set and a break, Nadal leaving without saying anything, the referee adamantly refusing to say anything to Stan or to call and ask the guy in charge of this during the entire length of the MTO.
I'm a Rafa fan, but Stan was pure class here. The umpire made this situation into a situation, he handled it very poorly. Every player has the right to call for treatment for medical reasons so he just needed to handle himself better.
At the time of this match, ATP rules stated that opponents had a right to know the reason for any physio visit. It is specifically stated in Rule #16, Section 5. You can look it up, plain as day, online. The rule still exists. In the hard copy handbook, it is page 19.

The rule states that a player cannot receive two medical timeouts for the same injury during a match. That is why the reason for each timeout has to be announced to the opponent. If Nadal received treatment for his back during this timeout and he wanted another treatment an hour later, it cannot be to fix his back; it is only allowed for another injury. That is why it is so important to announce the reason for each one. Clear as daylight... The umpire violated a clear rule of the ATP.

As I predicted after this match v Wawrinka, Nadal played the whole of the clay season soon afterwards without obvious injury problems. He had to have the trainer on again when struggling today in the Australian Open v Smyczek, and took a toilet break. In 2012 he even took a toilet break when Federer was about to serve for the match. These things have happened often when he's losing or the opponent is getting on top, and often miraculously he then plays better despite the injuries/illness. And he has twice taken long breaks from the game with "injuries" in his weaker half of the year when off form. I also predicted last year he wouldn't play the world tour finals- it's indoors, he's never won it, and both Federer and Djokovic were on form, as in 2012.when he went missing for 6 months. He strangely played one match with appendicitis in the autumn but waited weeks for an op.

Enough tennis has been played over the years for even a common tennis viewer to understand that Nadal puts significantly more stress on his body for his style of play compared to anyone else. So at most, it is a self inflicted "injury" although I wouldn't even call it that. So he shouldn't be allowed to get long breaks during seasons. He should be forced to play same number of tournaments as others. In my opinion, this is a different form of cheating. In anycase, we will see this year what happens. Just came here after Osaka-Williams out of curiosity, cause I remember this was also a slam final which involved a conflict between the same umpire (Carlos Ramos) and a player upset about his decision. What Stan did is JUST how a conflict with an umpire should be dealt with: you state your opinion, you can be angry, but you don't call him/her names and you stick to the point and you also know when to stop. And Stan wasn't at 23 slams then, he was playing his first final ever against a guy he never won a set against and was finally winning and then this difficult moment happened to him (Nadal leaving the court just like that).

Stan could use his injury as an unfair advantage. Say if his left leg hurt Stan could play differently. He is correct in satin that when your opponent leaves he must be informed why.
James Ashley the umpire is supposed to tell him. if a player takes a medical time out, his opponent is supposed to be told why, otherwise you could leave the court during a medical time out just because you were tired, or you wanted to break your opponents concentration.
Umpires let him get away with all sorts of things- repeatedly exceeding the serve time for instance. Shameful. And Nadal has had the cheek to argue angrily with them on occasions the rules have been enforced. Federer has on a few occasions won whole games quicker than Nadal has taken to serve.

Players do this all the time against Nadal too. Djokovic did it in the past several times. Federer did it before the fifth set at the AO two times. Nishikori even took a shower and was gone for 20 minutes during the olympics when they had to play the final set for the bronze medal without a reason he just left.

@ASTUESP : Nadal taking a MTO during the set, being down a set and a break, giving no reason why is completely different than Federer during the AO 2017 final.
During the AO 2017 final, Federer took 1 real MTO, at 2 sets all, and BETWEEN SETS 4 and 5 (MTO between sets = normal, it's taking it during a set - and worse, down a break in that set - like Nadal did here that is a disturbance for the opponent), went out of the court a few minutes to get treated, and Nadal knew why (for the same thigh pain he had in the semi). Nadal then immediately broke Fed in the first game (so yeah... Fed was the one who was disturbed by his own MTO) ; then, at 1-2, Federer simply had the physio massage his thigh on the court at the change of ends for around the same amount of time of a normal change of ends, so nothing about that could have been a disturbance for Nadal (unless seeing Roger getting massaged gets him horny), and indeed, Nadal won his service game. Federer almost never took any MTOs during his career, but at 36, a player may need 1 or 2 MTO once a year at the end of a Grand Slam during a 3-4 hours match.
In this match against Stan, Nadal was apparently injured, so taking a MTO during that match is ok (although the timing of this MTO was the worst for his opponent, taking it between Sets 1 and 2 would have been great). The thing is that Nadal's known for having taken MTOs often during his career, during sets, too often being down in the score when his opponents had momentum (did it against Fed at least 2-3 times), only to come back running like a rabbit, taking the momentum and crushing his opponents. So Stan's reaction is understandable ; in the middle of a set, up a set and a break, Nadal leaving without saying anything, the referee adamantly refusing to say anything to Stan or to call and ask the guy in charge of this during the entire length of the MTO.
I'm a Rafa fan, but Stan was pure class here. The umpire made this situation into a situation, he handled it very poorly. Every player has the right to call for treatment for medical reasons so he just needed to handle himself better.
At the time of this match, ATP rules stated that opponents had a right to know the reason for any physio visit.
It is specifically stated in Rule #16, Section 5. You can look it up, plain as day, online. The rule still exists. In the hard copy handbook, it is page 19.

The rule states that a player cannot receive two medical timeouts for the same injury during a match. That is why the reason for each timeout has to be announced to the opponent. If Nadal received treatment for his back during this timeout and he wanted another treatment an hour later, it cannot be to fix his back; it is only allowed for another injury. That is why it is so important to announce the reason for each one. Clear as daylight... The umpire violated a clear rule of the ATP.

While Nadal may have had a genuine "injury" and received the treatment that he has the right to receive, you have to wonder why always him? You will always see something to do with an injury when he loses. Either during the match or after it. RG 2008 loss to Soderling, after which he was out for long time. Loss to Rosol in Wimby in 2012 I think? Same thing after that and here again.
It happens with Nadal again and again. While I will come back to the supposed injury in a second, let me tell you one thing, especially people saying Nadal would have won if he was fit or he played through the pain to give Stan his moment, you are all forgetting that these are professional players. They don't do anyone any favors, especially in a GS final.
Stan's fight is with the Umpire and not Nadal, but he just wanted to make sure Nadal received time out that he legally deserved rather than just fooling the umpire. Also, if it is a matter of rule, it should be as clear as black and white and while I don't know them myself, judging by what commentators were saying, I think Stand knew the right rules and hence is arguments.
Nadal got back on court and actually won a set. It proves that he was able to continue and he himself felt that he still had chance of winning. As a player, if you are injured and feel that even after the treatment, you will not be able to compete hard enough that you will win, you won't continue. It never happens at this level because it is plain and simple stupid to aggravate an injury in a losing cause. Nadal has said this himself time and again.
Having said all that, even if Nadal had retired, I wouldn't have any sympathy for him because all these supposed injuries he has had are all because of his style of play. He overworks his body which causes these injuries.
I am shocked how blind and scare today's sports journalists are to not see what it is and state what it is. Nadal's injuries are not really injuries, they are result of wear and tear. I am not a doctor but I don't need to be one to see it. You ask any medical professional working in sports field and they will tell you the same. Even Nadal's uncle who is his coach knows this and admits it.
Stan said it himself, by not making Nadal's condition public, there's the chance that he might be fooling around, wasting time, or whatever. You can't just let someone take a medical time out without public knowledge, the other player has the right to know. "I'm not supposed to tell you"... it's not like the guy went to see his psychologist.
As I predicted after this match v Wawrinka, Nadal played the whole of the clay season soon afterwards without obvious injury problems. He had to have the trainer on again when struggling today in the Australian Open v Smyczek, and took a toilet break. In 2012 he even took a toilet break when Federer was about to serve for the match. These things have happened often when he's losing or the opponent is getting on top, and often miraculously he then plays better despite the injuries/illness. And he has twice taken long breaks from the game with "injuries" in his weaker half of the year when off form. I also predicted last year he wouldn't play the world tour finals- it's indoors, he's never won it, and both Federer and Djokovic were on form, as in 2012.when he went missing for 6 months. He strangely played one match with appendicitis in the autumn but waited weeks for an op.
Couldn't agree more :) I have been harping on about his supposed injuries. Enough tennis has been played over the years for even a common tennis viewer to understand that Nadal puts significantly more stress on his body for his style of play compared to anyone else. So at most, it is a self inflicted "injury" although I wouldn't even call it that.
So he shouldn't be allowed to get long breaks during seasons. He should be forced to play same number of tournaments as others.
In my opinion, this is a different form of cheating.
In anycase, we will see this year what happens. If you all can remember this post, come back next year and let's discuss how many matches Nadal plays on surfaces other than Clay. I can bet he won't play WTF this year unless he takes a long break.

Just came here after Osaka-Williams out of curiosity, cause I remember this was also a slam final which involved a conflict between the same umpire (Carlos Ramos) and a player upset about his decision. What Stan did is JUST how a conflict with an umpire should be dealt with: you state your opinion, you can be angry, but you don't call him/her names and you stick to the point and you also know when to stop. And Stan wasn't at 23 slams then, he was playing his first final ever against a guy he never won a set against and was finally winning and then this difficult moment happened to him (Nadal leaving the court just like that).

andy masters Against Soderling he was injury free and playing well, but Soderling was still hammering him. And Nadal took an injury time out because he could, not because he needed it. In this case yes maybe he was having back problems but in the past he's used this to break down momentum of his opponent when he losing.
