What I really love about Stan is his ability to hang in the points till he gets a ball he can rip. One shot is enough for him to turn the point around against anyone, and he makes sure he stays in the point for long enough till he gets such a ball. He slices, he defends, and hangs in there. He doesn't need to be in position or neutralise the attack, if he can find a ball that isn't at the absolute end of his range in terms of width and height, it's all over. For that 3-4 year period between AO13 and FO17, he had excellent runs in most majors, and during that time, he had the ability to play at this level (or close to it) fairly consistently. I watched this match on TV when it aired, and I told my father I think Wawrinka's gonna win this tournament, no one can survive against this kind of power. It was a pleasure to watch him play this whole tournament.

In the beginning of his career here in Switzerland I was basically the only guy saying that Wawrinka would be once top ten and perhaps number 1 in the world. People used to say that “he can’t play tennis”. I saw in playing in Gstaad when he got a wildcard. He played exactly like he did when he won against Federer here, but only one set, and lost the match. I was chocked with the intensity of his game, especially the backhand down the line. I never saw something like this before. He had in this time the same attitude like Eubank before his breakthrough, going all the time for winners. When he learned to be more patient he got top 50, and later top five. He his my favorite player (together with Kuerten, of course: the same powerful backhand). Right now he is doing great again 30 July 2023).

What I don’t agree is you saying Stan beat Rafa in 2014 AO final because he was injured. No way Rafa would’ve won that match even if he was at his best. He was getting outplayed from start to finish. Only reason he won a set is he started limping and distracted Stan that is why he was able to win. It would’ve probably been a straight sets win for Stan even if Rafa wasn’t injured.

Interesting fact: Federer is the person who made Djokovic a GOAT. Because many times Federer would eliminate Stan and then go on to lose to Djokovic in a humiliating fashion. Djokovic got 3-4 extra slams because of the services Federer did for him in semifinals and quarterfinals by removing Stan … Federer’s backhand is a disgrace …
