I love Matthew’s competitive style but I do feel like he’s just a really great competitor. He doesn’t have another gear and the gear is not getting better over the years. These kids are coming up and flying just like he was. Still a great runner.
Kennedy Lightner of Kentucky just ran 32.45 for #4 on the indoor 300m NCAA all-time list; Johnnie Blockburger ran 32.68 for #13; Justin Braun ran 32.74 for #17; Emmanuel Bynum ran 32.83 for #21; and Justin Robinson ran 32.52 on an oversized track (not a banked track so time isn't on the all-time list).
Great runner seems to be a decent guy as a person but we know why 'some' people are on his jock so hard. Elephant in the room. Whenever you ask someone why Boling specifically is your favorite runner they give responses you can apply to pretty much any of the great runners.
A little correction - he's got the USA Olympic Trials as his priority (June 21 - June 30). He's got to get through that pressure cooker first. Plenty of smoking-fast 400m runners in the USA and anything 45.0 or above isn't going to be fast enough to catch that flight to Paris in mid-July. Heats on June 21, Final on June 24.
Note: This was an "Open Grade" race and an Invitational. It is not classed as a Pro race. It depended on whomever the Organisors invited: Athletes who have professional contracts or simply club runners or budding Olympic competitors or even current runners who attend College/University. If you are fast enough, the organisors will invite you. Everyone age over 20 is classed as an Open Grade runner. As Matt Boling has a Pro contract then yes, it could be said it was his first race as a Pro. But he's been running in Open Grade races, in addition to his College races, for a couple of years now. Olympic trials/Olympic games etc are all Open Grade.

A ten meter advantage based on Lane assignment. Truth be told, if anyone wanted to break the 32 barrier, he should have kicked appropriately without the external motivator, but the point is that vision is as key a factor as the radius of the turn. And only the inside 2-3 lanes have a major disadvantage.
I've watched Boling starting Sr year high school. What i saw on this race was he's not fully fit yet. He was moving more clunky than usual and also power and stamina down. Maybe in several weeks he will be in better fitness.@@tonys4039
Boling just doesn't look like a natural sprinter. Almost every time he hits the track, he looks like he's struggling and just fighting instead of finding a great running stride. He has long strides...probably fit for the 400 but even then for 400 runners their "kick" is more centered/behind. He runs with his legs far ahead. Watch Michael Johnson run a 200 or 400. His center of gravity/running is amazing. Boling looks like he's trying to catch up with his stride. My $0.02

Yes, what he is doing IS common but not right. I'm an older guy and there used to be a term in running that has been lost and that work is "PEAKING". The greatest runners know the value of winter base work, not all out sprinting or racing. Yes, there have a few exceptions but they are rare. Abbey Steiner is another one. I believe she should have been a medalist at the World Outdoor Championships but "only" made the final and ran one of her slower times. But credit to her she at least made the final. @@aredditor4272
So it really matters what you define as flop. To put it mildly, he sticks out like a sore thumb and sometimes that is what matters in terms of sponsors and endorsements. Another example is Abby Steiner although Steiner has had a much better career thus far but she again really sticks out in the world of sprinting.
If by flop you mean he won’t win an olympic medal in an individual event, then you are correct, but his career will be meaningful and he will earn a living through track and field which for most careers is the point.

The new sprinter from UGA took second overall and beat former Georgia sprinter standout Boling of now USA by a wide margin in third. I am just not sure how Boling will turn out as a pro? He may do well. I just cannot say now.

Boling ran a 9.98 (wind aided) and a 44.7 (relay leg) in HIGH SCHOOL!! When you look at those performances and project forward and allowing for the wind and relay, he should be one of the top 3-5 sprinters in the country. He isn't and I'm not sure why. I don't think it's his coaching at Georgia. by now he should be much better. Maybe he just peaked and that's all there is to it.
Dude, the back wind for that 9.98 was so strong, most meets wouldn't really count it. It was way more than twice legal. The 44.7 is fantastic but has been done a few times. He's a great runner but some of you guys are expecting way more than he can deliver.
I will say he was slightly over hyped as a 100m runner. That said he was running fast enough to say he had fastest in the world potential at the time. He just never pushed through that peak for whatever reason. People forget he's also a 27ft long jumper. Pretty awesome overall athlete just not the world beater he looked to be in highschool.

I hope that the expectations people had for matt as a high schooler don’t dampen his promising career, he just needs to be himself and set his own goals, not fall into the media’s unrealistic expectations
I mean he has improved he went from 10.11 in high school to 9.98 and from 20.31 to 19.92. People thought he would be the next big thing which he just wasn't. The expactations were just way too high.

On indoor track the two outer lanes have an advantage because the turn is too tight on the inner lanes.
