Such great, short, sharp informative videos. Love this Channel. No BS just factual and evidenced base analysis and advice. Thank you. Keep up the great content.
Couldn’t believe a RUclips video that l watched lately of a couple that’s Prado shit itself, 5 weeks to tell them it had spun a bearing, dealership could have dropped oil and checked filter in a couple of hours
Shocking hey. I work at a Toyota dealer and I was nearly screaming at the tv watching that video. Don’t understand their thought process at all with that diagnosis
Excellent information Peter. Thanks for your research. Just makes me worried about buying one of these Toyota 2.8 diesel four-wheel-drive’s and seeing so many failures.
just remember any engine will shit its self if you over load it towing a block of flats in to a head wind on a 38 deg day up a small rise sends temps throw the roof breaks down the oil game over.dont let any body tell you are aloud to tow up to your limit weight is your enemy
Hey Peter can you are a video on what are the normal temperatures for the 1GD engine /transmission / and egr as in what’s normal and what’s too hot to the point where you should stop and let the car cool down. This can be monitored with a scan gauge 3
Hey Peter, I have an old 3F 60 series im working on and worried about the bearings being shot; how much flaking would you consider normal or not to worry about in the oil filter? If im the filter is catching one or two as of the last service of very fine thin flakes of metal; that would most likely be the bearings right? The vehicle sat for 3 years with the same old oil in, ran around a couple hundred km's before I got my hands on it and ran some fresh oil through it. I should have kept and chopped open the first oil filter to see if it picked anything up.
Thanks Peter. Good info. You may have seen the recent YT video of the 30k old Prado with the big end bearing failure, so quite topical. With the EGR leaks on 1gd’s , is this something you can detect easily or it only happens when the vehicle is under load ? I own a 1GD 2019 Prado, so need to keep a watch out for it Cheers
Doesn’t help when people continue to tow in top gear/overdrive. Just about every RUclipsr with a blown 4 cylinder turbo diesel at the moment (which is a lot of you!) I’ll guarantee have been towing across Australia in “Drive” or in top gear (manual)
Great info Peter. I have a 2007 3.0ltr that rattles on cold mornings under acceleration. Stops after a vey short time.I was told its injectors and normal for this motor. Any ideas ? Many thanks. Love watching your vids
Oh hell, I had that same rattle when I lived at NewCastle NSW, when I left the 2007 120 series 3L out over a very very cold winter night and early morning start. Local mechanic tried to simulate next morning to no success, put rocker cover back on and overtightened the back corner (drivers side firewall side) lug, causing hairline crack-the oil leak of which drove me up the wall. Rattle did not happen again after that time but a couple of years later, in very hot conditions going up a long mountain 100 zone piston cracked. Found out that new rocker cover seals should be used if rocker cover taken off and tightened from the centre on each long side going out to each end. Torque is very small number…not sure? 9Nm? So easy to crack-its only plastic-and old-brittle. Looking back, that rattle was a tell tail sign I believe. Get a diagnostic tool with an experienced mechanic fast. Has it been used for towing like mine was prior to buying it. Mine was service per the book every 10,000klms or Yearly whichever came first. Clearly this use is “severe duty” which requires more like 5000 klm oil changes and depending on your local climate and duty - oil grade as per manual. If it’s been used for towing I would not deviate from standard tune and change the oil often. But first get a good mechanic to put his tool on for the readings for injectors feedback, fuel pressures etc etc.
very timely considering the couple recently posted about their newish Prado spitting a rod bearing. John Cadogan also picked up on the story in one of his recent posts on RUclips.
Those genuine Toyota oil filters were tested in an American comparison and they were tested worse by far for filtration oil seems to get around the filter media and bypass being filtered. I used to have dark coloured oil even straight after oil change but now use a better rated oil filter my oil stays clean for many 1000s km.
Hi I'm about to by a prado don't know if I should get an old 1 with a 1kd or a new 1 with a 2.8 but I've been told the new engines are shit don't by 1 .. I'm lost
You’ll never run short of work with these new engines that Toyota is developing these days!
Great tutorial mate👌
Mate you are a dealership service centers worst nightmare. Factual, no BS, evidence based examples. Fantastic as usual Pete

That’s a great tip inspecting the oil filter, thank you.
Day one motor mechanic apprentice lesson.

Great work peter
Can't beat the 1hdfte
Thanks for the information.
What oil would you recommend in the later 1GD? 0w 20 like Toyota put in or something else from what you have seen?
Thanks

Why dont these manufacturers use cylinder head temperature or exhaust gas temperature sensors?

What do you use to remove a 1vd sump ?
What about using your ears to detect engine failure? 👂
toyota--- quality is now crap and prices higher than ever--- and people line up like sheep and pay---lol
Your right, bought a hilux 4 months ago , should have done my homework!

Buy something else that can tow. Isuzu.
These new generation of engine the 3.3 and the 2.8 are IMHO a POS.
Regarding 2.8, 3.0 1KDs are even worse in these cracks so I don't know what you're talking about. The 3.3s however i agree with you
haha
