We got this ready just in time for Mario Sunshine's 21st anniversary today! But which gaming topic should we explore for our NEXT episode of Mission in Action?
You got to do one for Cream the Rabbit she hadn't had any appearance in any sonic games outside of the Olympic game and IDW comic or an mentioned in sonic frontiers
Toadsworth was 60 years old as of Paper Mario TTYD, while E Gadd was implied to be 80 during the events of Luigi's Mansion. So if the games followed real time, Toadsworth would be around 80 while Gadd was 100+ during Luigi's Mansion 3. It's a little sobering to think that these games have been around for so long.
@@enjetti Do we even know how time passes in the Mario universe? Super Mario Land's ending took place the same day as Super Mario Land 2's beginning but the games were made 3 years apart.
@@MarioSonic46 I'd guess Nintendo purposely keeps that loose. Otherwise Princess Peach could be like 50 right now. In a way though, E Gadd technically developed a way to cheat death via Gooigi: Just create a goo clone, and transfer the person's consciousness.
The Mario universe works kind of like the Simpsons universe I think, where the characters never actually are a different age except for when the story demands it.
I wish Nintendo would at least tell us why Toadsworth hasn't shown up in recent years, and WHY THEY CUT HIM OUT OF THE MOVIE WHEN HE WAS INITIALLY PLANNED!
Agree, a Vacation Tour or a Delfino Tour can work good with him. Top-Shelf tracks that can work with him can be: -DS Delfino Square -GCN Peach Beach -Tour Los Angeles Laps 4 -GCN Mushroom City
Man, same! It would be awesome if her game had all mahor Toad characters like him, the normal Toad (red spots, blue vest), Toadette, et cetera. And also her using her Smash parasol, her floating ability, maybe Perry having a cameo...
I feel like Toadsworth was a really unique character. Because in a series full of many characters who have a romantic interest in Peach, it was nice to see someone care about her in a more familial way for a change
I remember a time where I thought Toadette was done appearing in Mario Games but then she came back stronger than ever. She was Playable in Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart wii and then she disappeared for like a decade.
I remember that. It was kinda sad when she was the ONLY MP8 character not to return in MP9 in any way. I felt that was a pretty big indicator to Nintendo not really caring for her (at the time) Now it’s a complete 180 scenario. She’s in everything now haha. Main reasons I believe she’s made a return to the series while Toadsworth hasn’t is because she’s much more marketable, Nintendo tends to prefer young or young looking characters, and she’s managed to make a prominent name for herself(Captain Toad, Peachette, Super Nintendo World). All things Nintendo (currently) doesn’t seem to see in Toadsworth.
@@flipex6304 True but it’s also because Nintendo doesn’t like having unique Toads anymore. Toadette was spared likely because she was one of the only feminine Toads.
Toadsworth is one of those characters you'd expect to see in the Mario Movie. Especially if you're being introduced to the mushroom kingdom for the first time.
19:30 I can get behind this reasoning for filtering Toadsworth out if Sunshine was his only appearance but he kept appearing to the point where he evolved from chaperone to a sort of royal advisor and parental figure. I personally feel like it's really weird that Nintendo just wants to axe him. He wasn't bad to have around.
Considering how often the subject of these series of videos goes on to reappear a short time later in a stunning comeback, expect Nintendo to reveal their next game is a spinoff 3D Puzzle Platformer starring playable Toadsworth as he himself rescues Princess Peach from his evil counterpart, Frogsworth.
I tell you Toadsworth is the mario cast equality to Cream the Rabbit both are known charther in the 2000s that had next to none appeared in the late 10s
I'm honestly hoping he's going to be playable in Mario kart but I know he's long gone. I was so sad and shocked he wasn't in the Mario movie but that was the proof we needed to know he's gone. I loved his voice lines especially from Mario sunshine "blah blah blah blah blah blah." And his pitching skills in Mario sluggers was the best. I'm so glad you guys made this video because I've been thinking about this for the longest time.
what would be fun if that new Princess Peach game features Toadsworth in the audience or, if the game goes of the stage at some points, maybe we come across an retirement home, with Toadsworth having some tea
same here. it a was a nice familiar face on the sidelines for a console generation and then some with the very few Wii appearances. im starting to miss Bowser Jr. cuz he keeps getting sort of left out until re-releases with bonus content or outright missing for no reason given. like how long before we see Mario Odyssey + Bowser Jr.'s Revenge? where its the same game, but it has a short added story of Jr. causing havoc and kidnaps Peach "for papa!" and you got to 2 new levels. and never would it explain why Jr. didnt exist during the main story's events.
If he did exist in the movie canon, then I've got an idea of how it would've gone down. What if he was the original king of the toads before Peach came along. But when she did, he felt more bitter to her because she wasn't a toad, but over time he grew to be fond of her and decided to make her his successor. But then one day he went missing and resulted in the toads crowning Peach their ruler. That could be an idea for a Mario movie sequel, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Yoshi going on a quest to find out what happened to Toadsworth and bring him back.
Problem is that would end up like an original story for the movie, not the main idea of the regular games. I don't feel like Nintendo would want the movie sequels to specifically focus on Toadsworth, so it's more possible for Toadsworth to just be ignored.
I think Nintendo simply doesn't want unique designs or distinct attributes like age to be represented for their "main" types of characters anymore; this includes Toads, Yoshis, and anything else of the sort. We see this in Paper Mario, but we have been seeing this in Mario and Luigi as of late too. I think, however, Nintendo is selective in which games are allowed to express these attributes, which is why they were lenient with Super Mario RPG for Switch, and Mario + Rabbids (kinda). Both were developed outside of Nintendo, so that's why they have more freedom I suppose. I don't even think Nintendo wants to represent gender either, which is why we didn't even see Toadette in the Mario movie, or why we only see a presumably male Yoshi only.
For Paper Mario, I think that's a case of the developers not listening to fans. Every other Mario related game aside from Origami King has modified characters, or unique characters. It seems to be only a Paper Mario issue at this point. If they were against unique designs and distinct attributes, they'd replace Mallow and Geno with Blue Toad and Yellow Toad (imagine if they did that, lol), and the Smithy Gang would be replaced by Bowser and the Koopalings. Even the Mario Sports games on Switch have unique and modified characters. It's clear Nintendo doesn't have a disdain for their legacy while Toadsworth and Toadette were cut from the Mario movie, they were in concept art. Maybe they were cut due to time constraints, or something. Super Mario Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion 3 allow unique characters and in Wonder we've got these new Toad-like species that appear. Who knows? Maybe Toadsworth will hopefully appear in the upcoming Peach game. It would be stupid if he didn't appear given his connection to Peach.
As the other guy stated it seems to be a paper mario only issue. I don't even think that Toadette appears in them just basic toads. Compared to games like Wonder which has the Seed toads, Rpg keeping it's unique toads and so on.
That's not really true. At this point he’s a throwback for people who are now adults but we’re kids playing Mario in the Gameboy Advance GameCube Ds era. It’s a huge bummer he wasn’t in the movie I would’ve actually been excited to see him again
I think Toadsworth could've been added to the Double Dash roster, with his partner being Professor E. Gadd, just get rid of the babies, the Chain Chomp item never really fit them anyway.
I hope that in the next Smash game, Peach's Neutral Special get's updated to have him instead of a normal Toad, I'm kind of surprised they didn't do that in Ultimate when they changed the animation so the Toad stands guard in front of Peach instead of Peach pulling out the Toad.
@@azurewarrior2000 eh idk, I think they chose Toad for a reason. He’s a legacy character and Toads have been Peach’s retainers from the start. Toadsworth is an elderly advisor and a later addition, not a personal body guard. And he’s also no longer relevant.
Aww, I missed this series! It's a little strange to not hear Derrick's voice here, but not in a negative way And yeah, from the moment the chairman Toad first appeared in the movie, I was wondering why they couldn't have made him Toadsworth, and finding out that he was originally intended to be him makes the omission even more baffling... I'll never understand why they did that, it just doesn't make sense, especially when you look at so many other deep cuts they made with their references and Easter eggs in the movie @_@ (And now you've got me wondering if Toads have flesh or some kind of mushroom skin, which is a thought I've never wanted to have)
Easily one of the best videos covering Toadsworth's history and absence on the entire platform. Maybe someday he'll finally get to appear in a new game that isn't a remake... Also, him being cut out of The Super Mario Bros. Movie for seemingly no reason does hurt a bit.
To my knowledge however, for the Mario movie in an interview, Miyamoto said he was all down for Toadsworth returning in the movie. He wasn't against it at all. But since he doesn't appear, that makes me assume Illumination chose not to put him in for some jarring reason.
You must be confused, this interview simply does not exist. The only time Miyamoto has ever mentioned Toadsworth was in a Super Mario Galaxy 2 Iwataasks interview The movie team did have an interview (VisionariesPodcast) where they were asked about the limits of what they could do but they gave a contradicting non-answer. They claim a good deal of freedom, but also admit that Nintendo was very involved and would direct them on what they wanted and didn't want in the movie and give some orders. So it doesn't really tell us anything at all about whether they could or couldn't use Toadsworth.
I miss toadsworth. I really loved the idea of toadsworth taking the role of the generic npc toads, allowing the "main" toad to be an actual part of the cast. Toad was my Mario party main in the games he was available in, but more recent titles relegate him to the host role he had in the N64 era. I think toadsworth was a fitting choice for the host role in 7 Running the toad houses also made sense. It would especially work for titles where a toad is playable (And he'd be a no brainer for roster filler in spin offs where he's not the host/officiator. I'd rather have him over a 5th baby or 4th Mario/peach variant)
I agree! Him being a “father figure” for Peach really made him a special Toad. I wish Nintendo brought back unique Toads and did less with generic ones.
Honestly, Toadsworth using magic with his wand in nsmb would actually be a really good idea to add to his character, he could be the Mushroom Kingdom version of Kamek
@@kirbo4252 E. Gadd is really old but probably will live for much longer due to the LM series. As long as Nintendo has a care to give Toadsworth relevancy then he’s still alive.
Toadsworth to me always felt like the Toad version of Kamek. A doting servant/father figure who will do everything he can to keep his charge safe. I was always very fond of the character. Those types of older characters with a sense of gentlemanly spirit are always appealing. I was glad to see his prominence continue to increase in the early 2000's, hoping that maybe he would get to be this proper foil to Kamek in some respect, but as time went on... well the video explains it better than I could. I do hope he returns in some capacity. (Last DLC for Mario Kart 8, maybe?) He is a beloved character who adds that extra bit of world-building for the Mushroom Kingdom.
5:42 Well, Luigi Mustache is also fake as stated in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam by Starlow And maybe a character you can cover can be Koopa General. We do know he appeared in the movie, and Kamikazeed himself and we dont see him for the rest of the movie. But that movie is Mario and Luigi's origin story in the games, but in the Mario Kart series, the Spiny Shell is a hollow shell despite the shell also disappearing in the movie. Also, the Spiny Shell seems to have wings and not have wings in the mario kart series. So, are there multiple Koopa Generals or Blue Shell Koopas with spikes?
I legit feel Toadsworth’s absence is due to… 1.) Being a relatively minor character from a rather divisive title 2.) Being an old looking character in a sea of more marketable/youthful looking characters. E. Gadd and Cranky Kong also struggle with this. 3.) In Nintendo’s eyes, he doesn’t really have a purpose (atm) What they need to do is give him some sort of prominent role that can transfer him into more appearances. Similar to how Toadette was upgraded from spin-off character to mainline series character thanks to CT:TT, which then led to her first mainline appearance in Odyssey and her subsequent recurring role in the series moving forward. If there’s any hope for Toadsworth anytime soon, my bet is on that new Princess Peach game.
1) So many characters from Sunshine became regulars in the series. 2) Wdym "E. Gadd and Cranky struggle with this"? No they don't. They're both very popular characters, Cranky literally appeared in the Mario movie. This idea that being old makes you less marketable specially when applied to the Mario series (since most ppl think Mario is way older than he actually is) is dumb.
@@Quinhala11 Cranky is popular but E. Gadd has absolutely waned, he does not appear in the greater Marioverse anymore and is just solely in Luigi's Mansion again or rereleases
I was waiting for you to bring up the Mario movie. I feel like it's quite possible that the blue toad could be a redesigned younger Toadsworth. Maybe the next movie could reveal that, who knows? Hopefully he's alright. I've had a fondness for toads since I was 6-7, and this man is no exception. As for the video, amazing job making it! I never knew so many of these facts about him, like his relationship with Lima or his real age.
His last appearances were in two re-releases of older Mario games (Bowser’s Inside Story 3DS and Mario Sunshine in 3D All Stars). Not even a new game. Poor guy.
Nintendo doesn't care about the history, characters and locations of the Mario universe. Mario's back catalog of references and history is ignored for nameless Toads, and the same 3 or 4 main characters and same 2-3 locations/aesthetics. Most people don't even know what land Daisy is even the princess of
It's simple, really: Super Mario Sunshine was a controversial game at the time it was released. Toadsworth, along with many other characters introduced in that game, were therefore seen as "the Scrappy". And whereas Nintendo has long since redeemed Bowser Jr., Petey Piranha, and even the Piantas and Nokies, it doesn't appear that they could save Toadsworth in any way. So, they've sent him to the retirement home to live out the rest of his days...
To think he could have made his grand return in the Mario movie, but NOOOOOO, they had to do a Paper Mario and replace him with generic Toad #9999999...
I was hoping you would mention a possible appearance in the new peach game that was announced at the last Nintendo direct. I was really hoping he would be a character in double dash when I saw that he clearly has a character model to drive. The partner I would have found hilarious but not be mad is if he was paired with E. Gadd lol
14:39 I'd say he doesn't blame Bowser Jr. simply because he's just a kid and could grow into someone different from his father Y'know, not that the games move ahead in time
It's a crime that he disappeared. He's a fun little character who Nintendo have more or less replaced by Toad and Toadette. He fits in nicely with them and he wasn't annoying or anything. He was everywhere and then he wasn't. It's sad, really. He cared for Peach and her friends.
Man I remember this series. If I remember correctly the last one was either Ado or Mighty and Ray. But yeah I want to see Toadsworth again. He one of the older aged characters that I like

At least Toadsworth's isn't forgotten
At this point he’s a throwback for people who are now adults but we’re kids playing Mario in the Gameboy Advance GameCube Ds era. It’s a huge bummer he wasn’t in the movie I would’ve actually been excited to see him again
wow, you guys remembered you still had this series for the past 4 years
I think Toadsworth could've been added to the Double Dash roster, with his partner being Professor E. Gadd, just get rid of the babies, the Chain Chomp item never really fit them anyway.
The fact that they came up with an entirety new extremely similar-looking toad for the mario movie instead of just using toadsworth is wild to me.
I hope that in the next Smash game, Peach's Neutral Special get's updated to have him instead of a normal Toad, I'm kind of surprised they didn't do that in Ultimate when they changed the animation so the Toad stands guard in front of Peach instead of Peach pulling out the Toad.
Toad is more iconic and relevant than Toadsworth though.
@@SM-ns9ru I get that, but it would make more sense specifically for Peach as a character.
@@azurewarrior2000 eh idk, I think they chose Toad for a reason. He’s a legacy character and Toads have been Peach’s retainers from the start. Toadsworth is an elderly advisor and a later addition, not a personal body guard. And he’s also no longer relevant.
"Don't worry, my princess, I will protec-BLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAUUUURRRRRRGH!"
@@SM-ns9ru So? Toadette wasn’t relevant at some point but Nintendo had no issue bringing her back.
I want him in a new Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Well it’s obvious what happened to him.
Lady Lima murdered him and hid the body after finding out he was cheating on her with Zess T.
He died of old age. The others don’t like talking about it.
Where is Missing in Action? - Missing in Action. I CANT BELIEVE THE SERIES HAS RETURNED THO. ITS BEEN SO LONG
Aww, I missed this series! It's a little strange to not hear Derrick's voice here, but not in a negative way
And yeah, from the moment the chairman Toad first appeared in the movie, I was wondering why they couldn't have made him Toadsworth, and finding out that he was originally intended to be him makes the omission even more baffling... I'll never understand why they did that, it just doesn't make sense, especially when you look at so many other deep cuts they made with their references and Easter eggs in the movie @_@
(And now you've got me wondering if Toads have flesh or some kind of mushroom skin, which is a thought I've never wanted to have)
Legit surprised he wasn’t in the Mario Movie.
( This series) "he's finallh back and aboud time too! And this time, he is in the mood!"
*finally
@@volvoman5262 True, they haven't made one of these in years. So, it's nice to see this series return!
Easily one of the best videos covering Toadsworth's history and absence on the entire platform. Maybe someday he'll finally get to appear in a new game that isn't a remake...
Also, him being cut out of The Super Mario Bros. Movie for seemingly no reason does hurt a bit.
It's criminal that Toadsworth and E Gadd haven't appeared in a MK game.
Wasn’t E Gadd in Luigi’s Mansion 3 😅
Yes, but it would be nice to see him behind the wheel
@@jpronan8757 yup
To my knowledge however, for the Mario movie in an interview, Miyamoto said he was all down for Toadsworth returning in the movie. He wasn't against it at all.
But since he doesn't appear, that makes me assume Illumination chose not to put him in for some jarring reason.
Which interview did he state this?
You must be confused, this interview simply does not exist. The only time Miyamoto has ever mentioned Toadsworth was in a Super Mario Galaxy 2 Iwataasks interview
The movie team did have an interview (VisionariesPodcast) where they were asked about the limits of what they could do but they gave a contradicting non-answer. They claim a good deal of freedom, but also admit that Nintendo was very involved and would direct them on what they wanted and didn't want in the movie and give some orders. So it doesn't really tell us anything at all about whether they could or couldn't use Toadsworth.
@@zynux8252 oh huh.
Dang.
Toadsworth was never dead.. he probably retired 10 years ago and the fact he was mentioned somewhere in the behind the scenes from hollywood studios
I miss toadsworth. I really loved the idea of toadsworth taking the role of the generic npc toads, allowing the "main" toad to be an actual part of the cast. Toad was my Mario party main in the games he was available in, but more recent titles relegate him to the host role he had in the N64 era. I think toadsworth was a fitting choice for the host role in 7
Running the toad houses also made sense. It would especially work for titles where a toad is playable
(And he'd be a no brainer for roster filler in spin offs where he's not the host/officiator.
I think Mario Kart Tour and/or that untitled Peach game next year could both be great ways for Toadsworth to return.
Nintendo's definitely been showing signs that Toadsworth may canonically have passed.
What signs are those?
@@xenophonanthony2791I guess the fact he's stated to be 60 and that his life gets shorter every time peach gets kidnapped
@@kirbo4252 E. Gadd is really old but probably will live for much longer due to the LM series. As long as Nintendo has a care to give Toadsworth relevancy then he’s still alive.
@@xenophonanthony2791If he no longer exist anymore or preserved for the future, that's one big mystery!
Just 3 weeks after this video came out, Toadsworth is confirmed for returning in the Thousand Year Door remake.
Nice to see this series back! Sure wonder what happened to him...
El JVindahouse gringo weeee
I miss toadsworth very much
Blud is not JVINDAHOUSE 💀💀💀💀
I wish Nintendo add Toadsworth as a playable character in Mario kart tour.
It has been so many years since I’ve seen you guys do a missing in action video
He needs to be in the Next Mario movie
"He's dead, Jim"
I agree.
I agree too
If he dead just give him a Up-1 mushroom 😭🍄
Toadsworth may appear in the new Princess Peach game as a non-playable support character.
That's make sense because Kamek takes care of Bowser himself and Toadsworth takes care of Peach himself.
Jvindahouse?
Toadsworth is my favorite toad, I miss him ;-;
5:42 Well, Luigi Mustache is also fake as stated in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam by Starlow
And maybe a character you can cover can be Koopa General.
Toadsworth's sound clips from Mario Party 7 have been burned into my brain
I legit feel Toadsworth’s absence is due to…
1.) Being a relatively minor character from a rather divisive title
2.) Being an old looking character in a sea of more marketable/youthful looking characters. E. Gadd and Cranky Kong also struggle with this.
3.) In Nintendo’s eyes, he doesn’t really have a purpose (atm)
What they need to do is give him some sort of prominent role that can transfer him into more appearances.
Nintendo doesn’t like unique Toads anymore.
In my headcanon, I think that Toad with the glasses in the Mario movie is an updated but slightly younger version of Toadsworth.
You’ve summoned him. He’s gotta be in the remake of Thousand Year Door coming out next year
His last appearances were in two re-releases of older Mario games (Bowser’s Inside Story 3DS and Mario Sunshine in 3D All Stars). Not even a new game. Poor guy.
Nintendo doesn't care about the history, characters and locations of the Mario universe. Mario's back catalog of references and history is ignored for nameless Toads, and the same 3 or 4 main characters and same 2-3 locations/aesthetics. Most people don't even know what land Daisy is even the princess of
Toadsworth was murdered at the hands of Miyamoto himself
It's simple, really: Super Mario Sunshine was a controversial game at the time it was released. Toadsworth, along with many other characters introduced in that game, were therefore seen as "the Scrappy". And whereas Nintendo has long since redeemed Bowser Jr., Petey Piranha, and even the Piantas and Nokies, it doesn't appear that they could save Toadsworth in any way. So, they've sent him to the retirement home to live out the rest of his days...
The fact the captain toad Toadette and Toadsworth were supposed to be in the movie and weren’t ticked me off
I miss Toadsworth...
Especially his YABABLABLAH sound
To think he could have made his grand return in the Mario movie, but NOOOOOO, they had to do a Paper Mario and replace him with generic Toad #9999999...
I was hoping you would mention a possible appearance in the new peach game that was announced at the last Nintendo direct.
I was really hoping he would be a character in double dash when I saw that he clearly has a character model to drive. The partner I would have found hilarious but not be mad is if he was paired with E. Gadd lol
Fascinating Stuff! Hopefully we see Toadsworth again in a new Mario game in the future!
I always like this Toad. Miss you viejito 😢💔
Y'all should investigate Ms. Pac-man since Namco is actively trying to scrub her out of any media she appears in.
14:39 I'd say he doesn't blame Bowser Jr. simply because he's just a kid and could grow into someone different from his father
Y'know, not that the games move ahead in time
It's a crime that he disappeared. He's a fun little character who Nintendo have more or less replaced by Toad and Toadette. He fits in nicely with them and he wasn't annoying or anything. He was everywhere and then he wasn't. It's sad, really. He cared for Peach and her friends.
I like to think of Toadsworth as the Prime Minister of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the chief adviser of the royal family.
He just got old.. It happens to everyone
I'm still gonna say the blue toad in the movie is him just redesigned.
5:36 - "Did you know the doctor's mustache is fake?"
Bring toadsworth back!
He died of old age
I really do miss Toadsworth. I hope he does come back. Maybe a racer in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Fun Fact: Even Charles Martinet voiced Toadsworth.
Toadsworth is also my favorite host in Mario Party 7.
Uh, no it’s actually Scott burns
Man this series brings me back to 2016
Jvindahouse 😮?(
Man I remember this series. If I remember correctly the last one was either Ado or Mighty and Ray.
But yeah I want to see Toadsworth again. He one of the older aged characters that I like
The last one was three years ago about the koopa kids from mario party
