You forgot the story mode of 2019's Super Mario Maker 2. If the player fails at a job course a couple times, Luigi will show up, offering to either complete the course for them, or allow the player to use assist parts to make the course easier. The way these options become available after the player fails a couple times, PLUS that one of the options is letting the game complete the course for them sound VERY Super Guide-y to me. The option to use assist parts also sounds like a very Mario Maker-esque answer to the Invincibility Leaf, too.
While not a platformer, TLOZ: Ocarina of Time 3D had hint videos AND the ability to refight bosses, which is similar to the third part of the super guide’s patent.
I remember using super guide just to play as Luigi in NSMBW lol. Still happy with my old NSMBW 100% save file, even though the stars don’t sparkle anymore. I’m still happy with my save file!

I wish the guides were still around. I don't need them, but I like to see how the developers play their game. It's one thing to see a speedrunner blaze through the game, but it's another to see the creator of the game and knows all the little tricks play their game. It's why I like Sakurai's RUclips channel so much. I find those little bits of insight into the creation and testing ultimately helps more than watching someone speedrun.
3:18 This is my main issue with the super guide block. It’s almost as bad in NSMBU, because hitting it all, even by accident, means you can’t get shiny stars in your save file.
Crash bandicoot had an assist feature since its second entry. If a player died too much, a Aku aku mask is given on your next respawn. If you still die, one of the crates ahead will turn into a new checkpoint, so players can progress. Finally, a second aku mask will appear, giving the player two extra hit points
in super mario maker 2, there was a feature quite similar to the super guide block. it was where you could add blocks and power ups if you got stuck but this would only work in the story mode. just felt like i had to mention it.
3D world was not the last game, Yoshi's new island in 2014 had invincible wings. Even Mario Maker 2, in 2019, had a Luigi superguide in its story mode. I'm not sure if I'm forgetting something else
if i had to guess, i would say the reason why the Super Guide fell from fashion was because you needed the extra time to implement & make a full Walkthrough of your game, time that could be used for QA or other features
Random, but another place I remember an assist block kinda appearing was in the Pikmin Adventure minigame in Nintendo Land. After losing a level a number of times, a block would appear at the beginning of the level which made you level 50.
Here’s an idea for the next Missing in Action episode: Aquamentus, Pols Voice, Goriya, Vire, Gel, Zol, Patra, Digdogger, and Rope. What do they all have in common? They never appeared in any 3D games after Zelda 1.
I don't think NSMB2 opted for the assist block because it was a handheld game - at least, not in the way you argued. NSMB2 just had a little more influence from 3D Land compared to NSMBU, which mostly stuck to its own ideas along with following NSMBW's lead. The two games were developed simultaneously by mostly different teams, so each game ended up building upon NSMBW in different ways (with NSMBU of course innovating quite a bit more) and seemingly had little influence on each other.
Yeah, both 3D Land and NSMB2 make heavy use of the Super Leaf, with NSMB2 using more ideas from 3D Land and even the original NSMB1, rather than taking much from NSMBWii (only things they took from the Wii game are the music and the Koopalings), so it makes sense for the Invincibility Leaf to be in both 3D Land and NSMB2. Meanwhile, NSMBU stuck a lot closer to NSMBWii than 3D Land, so it makes more sense for the U game to reuse Super Guide instead.
The part of the Super Guide that I didn't like was that the Guide character remained on the stage even after the stage is completed. At least that's what I remember how SMG2 was.
nice seeing these come back. :3 tbh don't miss the super guide that as while i like it for hint videos/really hard levels(while i wish they made an intro/end for him do like funky kong as an option with some of the levels with how better handled the challenge was.) guide punishing a 100% was harsh, while i love the cosmic guide wish we saw more of rosalina in 2 with how the completion reward wasn't much worth it imo(would've preferred rosalina being playable there as a reward/she replaced lubba.) & while a nice reference to eddie the mean old yeti was annoying in returns with how overboard the difficulty was that for recent games giving hints to clear a section without unnecessarily punishing 100% only using it once or optional easy difficulty(yoshi's wooly world was really easy to break with the badges/not that hard super guide would've been overkill and would've alongside kirby handling it better able to toggle it).
Funny enough, 3D Land has a way to legitimately obtain and use P-Wings without tarnishing your save stars! In the Mystery Box stages, there is a rare chance of getting golden boxes that have two star medals in them, accessible right when the stage starts. There are many different layouts, but in World 1 and Special World 7, one such possible layout is 15 regular tanooki leaves and 1 P-Wing.
You forgot to mention about Yoshi’s New Island that you somewhat have a Mellow Mode in that game except you have to die 3 times in order to get the pair of invincibility wings from some random pipe dude.
I remember using the White Tanooki Tail on the final Bowser fight in NSMB2, I had a hard time defeating him, so I used the White Tanooki Suit the game gave me to beat him.
I remember using Super Guide most of the times in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D years ago because I found some of the levels very difficult to play. In New Super Mario Bros. U I died on purpose just to Use the Super Guide Block, yet the game was very easy to complete.
i love that the Aladin/Lion King collection also had the playable Walkthrough. Also, i thought the third patent of Digest Menus was in the Super Mario U extras
I recall how you can just pay to skip a stage in Octo Expansion but the mem cake didn’t count unless you did it properly. Reminded me of the cosmic guide
Why does everything keep reminding me that the last Donkey Kong Country game was from the Wii U era? I miss this series so much. But we probably won't see another one since Retro Studios is still seemingly working on a Metroid game that most people (including me) forgot that it got announced.
I'd rather have back the system they used for Skyward Sword and the remakes of Zelda OoT, MM. an optional area with videos for you to watch. The only improvement needed was for the npc/object that gives access to the videos to exist in multiple areas so that players aren't discouraged by the massive backtracking needed.
I personally really liked the inclusion of the Super Guide, as well as hint videos. I grew up on New Super Mario Bros. Wii, 2, and U, as well as Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns and even Mario vs. DK: Mini-Land Mayhem. These games were integral to my growing up as a gamer, and learning what kinds of games I like and don't like. A good example is that I had to use Super Kong WAY more than Luigi Super Guides, and rarely used the Cosmic Spirit. I can only remember ONE instance as a kid of using the Cosmic Spirit, that being the "Stroll Down Rolling Lane" mission in Melty Monster Galaxy. I have come to learn that I really enjoy platformers in general, but these particular games are ones I revisit over and over. I feel like I probably wouldn't have enjoyed these games as much as a kid if I was stuck on the few levels I did use Super Guides on, even if I can generally get through these same levels without the guides now. Hint movies on the other hand, I understand why they were mostly removed, but you don't get gems like the New Super Mario Bros. Wii 1-3 Super Skills movie (seen here ruclips.net/video/A2mCAcV7uEM/видео.html) from speedrunners.
The funny thing is, you only start with five lives, so you have to be good enough to get a few extra lives to use the super guide by losing eight in a row!
Do you forgot about Nabbit? In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe isn’t a first time it was playable character who have the immunity, the real first time what i saw, it was in New Super Luigi U DLC for Wii U.
I am actually making a platformer game, and the way i made the "chapter zero" into a hidden tutorial is that you're followimg your friend, and the friend "plays" the stage ahead of you, showing you generally what your character is capable or, without spoiling the fun of performing the Level itself. You're also able to outrun them if you're extra skilled.
I'm a little upset you didn't mention the super guide in new super mario bros u deluxe...because there's a small secret with it in that game! Normally the super guide summons luigi...but if you PLAY as luigi and get the super guide to appear it will instead summon mario with the block even turning red for mario! Just wanted to mention that.
I don't know whose idea it was that losing too many lives in a level should irreversibly damage the player's save file, but I hope they step on a Spiny.
Even though it is not a super "guide", I like how in Mario Kart Wii they introduced Automatic Steering. Not everyone knows how to drift and this change made the races much closer and exciting. I remember Reggie announcing in E3 that a newcomer and a veteran racer can be neck and neck. In Mario Kart 8, they do have the antenna ball which is GREAT for young kids for their first time playing, but it still doesn't help you compete against someone who knows the level and knows how to drift. I hope they bring Automatic Steering back so that I can enjoy Mario Kart with people that don't play video games very much.
In Sonic Lost World there was a similar feature to that of the p wing assist block. A wing item would spawn in after dying a few times and skip you to the next check point.
Yeah I remember these things. I used to be terrible at mario when I was a kid. Those things always appeared and they ruin your progress. I'm serious,if you have that thing appear on any level no matter what it ruins your 5 star file and you have to start all over again.
Oh yeah, that! I completely forgot about it. Well, I suppose that sums it up tho, huh? It just wasn’t executed that great, hence why it was just forgotten. With modern “Easy” modes or characters, you are still playing the same game as everyone else, just taking out a teeny thing that would make the game too hard for a player and letting them experience the same thing, just without that little inconvenience. Meanwhile, the Super Guides felt so patronizing because they felt like the game made you play another game, the easy one, the version that isn’t actually the same everyone is playing. The UI is different, the characters are different, the rewards are different, the end results are different. It is like making you play an entirely new, easier game because you couldn’t play the original one, rather than just changing something troublesome about it and letting you enjoy the rest.
It is a very forgettable object, although when I was trying to find a star coin the block appeared and completely ruined my 100% file! 😩 I’m glad they moved to the easy mode characters
Nintendo Wii is easily one of My FAVOURITE Consoles From My Childhood, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess are My Favourite Wii Games what I still have and Play. By the way would LOVE to get New Super Mario Bros Collection with Games New Super Mario Bros DS, Wii and 2. ❤
3:15 The shine is only removed if you if you unlock the next level with the super Guide, I got 100 percent like that before. It also appears if you die 4 times on tower and castle levels. 7:04 There's official hint movies on youtube
I like how Luigi was the Super Guide in most of the games. Its like Nintendo basically saying that Luigi is more skilled than Mario. Also, "Super Kong" was cool. I wish you could play as him instead of DK without having to use the guide, I love the color scheme.
I feel like the TTYD remake benefited greatly from the addition of its ZL/“help” button. Completely optional and infinitely more useful than Kersti’s “hints”.
Super Mario RPG (2023) has a "Breezy" mode, which despite making enemies easier to fight and making it easier to increase the Action Gage, doesn't affect the story (OR the 100% completion)
I hate the super guide. I died a couple times in a level cause either I messed up or was trying to get a hard start coin. I have so many lives, I never need them anymore
I don't have a problem with things like this, but people should really try to play the game normally after playing through it with easy mode so that they don't become a laughing stock.
Wait, what? These games are all single player games mostly who cares if you dont use it and someone does. Let people play games how they want to without judging them.
@@Leopez02 I'm literally replaying NSMB2 right now and actively avoiding the super leaf. It's so much better this way. I actually feel challenged (even though I have a butt ton of lives because, well, you know)
@@batmanbud2I'm gonna play games the way I want to. By the way, saying that people would be 'laughing stocks' is definitely judging them, so denying that is ridiculous
I wish playing as Yoshi in Wonder didn't force you into an easy mode. Why can't they let you choose a regular mode where you have a 3 hit health bar that can be replenished by picking up Power-ups?
I'm gonna be honest, I really don't like the super guide and hope it never comes back. I think having hint videos and showing how to play a level is perfectly fine, but when the game actually completes the level for you and you can move on as normal, that just feels like you're cheesing the game, especially since you could theoretically do this to beat like 90% of Mario Wii for example. I don't like the idea that you can play the game without actually playing the game. That said, I think easier modes is a way better solution. Having optional items that make things easier, or "Funky Mode" type stuff where you have more health and things are less punishing make a whole lot more sense. Because while it's easy mode, you are still playing the game. I could do without those items that warp you to the flag pole though, that's a bit much. Anyways though my point is that, if you want to watch a playthrough of a game, you'd just watch a playthrough of a game. Why would you play Mario Wii if you weren't actually gonna bother playing it? I at-least admire the effort to help struggling players, I just think the super guide itself was a bad way of doing that.
Yeah I agree. Being able to choose the difficulty at the start of the game makes a lot more sense. I’m mixed on the hint videos. Yes, they’re helpful, but pretty much everything can be found on RUclips these days.
I like the playing itself idea, but it's annoying they added negatives to it. Just let people see and get everything regardless of difficulty modes, who cares?
Really one of the most pointless things Nintendo ever did. There is already a video mode, it's called RUclips. Latest one day before any game releases you can watch a 100% guide.
Wow, another Missing In Accion video!
Nice to see the series back!

I feel like the TTYD remake benefited greatly from the addition of its ZL/“help” button. Completely optional and infinitely more useful than Kersti’s “hints”.
Mario 3d world will spawn in a cat item when you die a lot. You can decide to pick it up or not and it serves a similar purpose
*White Tanooki
The White Cat Suit appears when you tap a Cat Mario amiibo, not when you die a lot.
@@SALTYTOAD00 ...and only in the Nintendo Switch port.
Good call @@harrybest2041
Super Mario RPG (2023) has a "Breezy" mode, which despite making enemies easier to fight and making it easier to increase the Action Gage, doesn't affect the story (OR the 100% completion)
The disney collection for switch allows the game to play itself and then you can jump In at any point
Weird they aren’t around anymore, I don’t mind them being gone to be honest.
from 6:20 through 6:52 despite having a blue tie why didn't you mention Smash Bros? That's one of DK's alternate color schemes.
4:56 I love the game I really do, but I can’t beat the daredevil comment in the final secret level
Ah yes, what all gamers want. For games to play themselves.
I used to intentionally die in New Super Mario Bros Wii so I could cancel the Super Guide to play as Luigi.
I hate the super guide. I died a couple times in a level cause either I messed up or was trying to get a hard start coin. I have so many lives, I never need them anymore
still remembered when mahalo game channel was around in the 2010s.. now its inactive
seeing the thumbnail...Donkey kong and Rosalina should date
Can you do Hyper Sonic or the Super Emeralds on the next "Missing in Action" video?
the third part is VERY similar to amiibo tap!
last time i recall seeing this was OoT 3D. which makes it more of an awkward addition since MM 3D didnt have something like it.
Its probably because you can just search it up how to solve any problem with any game on youtube
Why didn't they mention Super Mario RPG remake having an easy mode in that game as well? OOF
Nabbit was playable on wii u through a comand code.
Now bring back "Cool Bits" please.
Who needs a Super Guide when you can use a Major Guide instead? XD
I want to know what happened to the old toad that appeared on super mario sunshine, he literally disappeared from existence
They already did a video on Toadsworth
I miss the wii
I don't have a problem with things like this, but people should really try to play the game normally after playing through it with easy mode so that they don't become a laughing stock.
Yeah You're so right, it's much more fun to learn for by myself to play games without an easy mode like Golden Tanooc Leaf on Super Mario Games.
Wait, what? These games are all single player games mostly who cares if you dont use it and someone does. Let people play games how they want to without judging them.
@@Leopez02 I'm literally replaying NSMB2 right now and actively avoiding the super leaf. It's so much better this way. I actually feel challenged (even though I have a butt ton of lives because, well, you know)
@@levimilk I'm not judging people. I'm just saying it's a better experience to play the game as intended.
@@batmanbud2I'm gonna play games the way I want to. By the way, saying that people would be 'laughing stocks' is definitely judging them, so denying that is ridiculous
What if 5 deaths resulted in the White Super Leaf Block while 8 resulted in the Super Guide Block?
I remember playing New super Luigi u on wii u And new super Mario Wii did got dlc?
Well, it is because there are other players to guide you via online for the new game.
It was used in fnf in mario madness v2
how about Mario rpg with Brezzy mode
I DON'T MISS IT
So I never got the true 100% in mario bros wii because I did not get the sparkly stars.
Didn't mario maker 2 have something similar
I wish playing as Yoshi in Wonder didn't force you into an easy mode. Why can't they let you choose a regular mode where you have a 3 hit health bar that can be replenished by picking up Power-ups?
Magalor? What, like Hillary's emails? 😂
Hi
it's a good thing it's gone. a game shouldn't play itself for you.
Yep You're so right, RUclips have always been Here since 2005. It's 20 Years old in 2025 when i'm 22 Years old WOW. 😮
Nintendo hates it thats why mario galaxy 2 was rejected from 3d allstars
Pretty sure maker 2 has one
