@@Random1567 kinda. But the only one that felt like a proper attack spell was the lightning, and that was so OP it kinda sucked the fun out of it. I loved ravalis gale tho
@Badarm All of them were OP! Mipha's Grace completely removes the need to cook meals for health. Revali's Gale removes all challenge with climbing and stamina management. The Goron defense kinda get in the way and quickly wastes itself on any consecutive low-power attack that your regular shield would block just fine. I disable them just to keep the game challenging enough. Love the game but that's probably my biggest gripe with it.
I kinda hate the stamina bar and find it rather annoying at least how it was in Skyward Sword, with having to climb to flower to flower. But as far as ammo system I find it completely fine and don't get why it was removed , it wasn't really a problem to buy a green or blue potion to prepare for dungeon or what not.
I haven't played a LoZ game in a long time but I remember Twilight Princess having armor that made rupees magical- you gradually lost rupees as you wore the armor. Would've been easier on the wallet if Twilight Princess had a magic meter just for that item.
I think Maybe the Magic meter(in Breath of the Wild) would have been used for more magical items early on such as the Elemental Rods and/or Arrows(having them consume regular arrows and Magic), Early Runes, Champion abilities, or something completely different that isn't in the final game
I believe the magic meter is a from of limitation that, while it feels good to use, can be improved upon. Instead of one universal statistic that determines how much you can use all forms of magic, every item can have its own way of balancing itself. This requires substantially more effort, but it allows for the benefits and drawbacks to a magical item to be designed around in a way that's catered specifically to it, rather than all magic spells being designed to adhere to one universal magic meter.
While I understand what it evolved into, I wish one of the new Zelda games would make Link a mage. ie: similar to some RPG's, there's a fixed point at which Link would gain magic and learn his most basic spells (let's say Fire, Thunder and Ice) but it's up to you to explore and discover more spells and upgrade the ones you already have (let's say Heal, Barrier, Meteor, Mjolnir and Blizzard).
I feel like a magic meter inspired by the energy gauge from ALBW could be an interesting feature. However, a system like that of the champion abilities in BotW might be its successor.
I think it could come back but it really needs some form of regeneration, even If it's just too a certain amount. Kinda like how certain games handle health regen.
Considering I've been in the middle of a shrine and had a weapon break (which I needed to complete the shrine), I know how frustrating running out of magic would be. That being said, there are plenty of options for managing resources: consumables, drops, reduction granted by armor or power gained throughout the game. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong or cumbersome about a magic system if done well.
I actually miss the Magic Meter. I greatly prefer it over the Stamina Bar as the MM was essentially a simple little managment system that required you to pay attention to all of your actions that required its use to not over do it otherwise you will be rendered useless for a fight. There was something satisfying about collecting all those green bottles, making green potions, and upgrading the bar to make it bigger.
for real, guys... wur da majik at? _Zelda_ has always been a fantastical, magical world, so why get rid of Link’s magic? I didn’t like all the emphasis in _BotW_ on science and technology... like they could’ve done everything the same, but just say all the Sheikah technology is powered by magic. I wouldn’t like it if the various elemental arrows used up magic, but it would make sense for using the Sheikah Slate runes... you could refill you magic meter with food or elixirs, and upgrade it by defeating Guardians. each Shrine could have a Sheikah Slate charger at the entrance so you would never run out in the middle of the puzzle. also, I really miss instruments and songs and other quasi-magical elements like that in the later games... _BotW_ could’ve really used a ‘Sun’s Song’ to make it stop raining every once in a while.
I like the magic meter only for the magical items that came alongside it. The meter itself was a hindrance, but items like the deku leaf, light arrows, and fire/ice rods made it better. I liked when my fire&ice rods didn't break.
It’s annoyingly to have to have consumables to use for a magic meter. Bosses would have to supply these things in some way which kind of wrecks the battle imo. The stamina meter refills which is definitely much better. Though it really does need to have upgrades because Skyward Sword’s stamina meter never lasted long enough while BotW’s stamina system worked really really well with permanent and temporary upgrades.
The simple solution would be to have the magic meter refill slowly over time but then give the player the option to craft potions that refill it faster. Also permanent and temporary upgrades for the magic meter. That way is the player runs out of magic during a fight all they have to do is wait for the magic meter to refill by itself or if they really need magic right now they can quaff a green potion that they crafted beforehand and refill it instantly.
Botw may not have a magic meter anymore but I definitely think it has its own form of magic with the champion's abilities, Elemental weapons, the ancient technology but magical feel of the runes like being able to stop an objects in place. Personally I like these more because they all have their own separate duration, cooldown and ammunition rather than being tied down to one thing.
The magic meter requiring consumables to refill makes any object requiring magic an optional ability. You're supposed to be able to beat the game without ever using it. Magic objects become temporary power ups. This prevents developers from making puzzles requiring magic because a large number of players would inevitably run out of magic right in the middle of the puzzle and loose a lot of time going on a scavenging mission to refill the bar before being able to make any new attempt. ... Or devs have to provide some conspicuous way to refill magic right in the puzzle room : giving away an enormous hint about how players are supposed to solve the puzzle. And it also means that players are discouraged from using magic whenever they don't absolutely need it, just in case... so the magic object becomes underutilized. Removing the magic meter and having the magic object refill automatically (either through the automatically refilling magic bar or through an independent cooldown) solves both issues in one single move.
A bit ironic how while watching the video I forgot it was a Gamexplain vid until near the end. The VO and presentation definitely contributed to that though not that it's a bad thing or anything.
I kind of miss the magic meter. I always remember the three types of potions and after it was gone, it just felt like something was missing. I also remember seeing it on the back of the TP box and thought it was in the game.
This is something i was thinking about for a while. What you said was basically also my conclusion: the magic meter solely existed to keep Link from spamming his more "unique" items, which were usually magic. Though throughout the series they started to give Link more and more unique abilities that required a finite resource to balance, but these abilities oftentimes were not even magical in nature. So it seemed as having the resource be called a "magic meter" seemed too specific for the abilities that used it. This first seemed apparent in Wind Waker where the Deku Leaf used the magic meter despite not making entire sense. They decided to change the resource to stamina, as it is more vaugue and therefore more adaptable to be used on more abilities. The recent trend for Zelds games to focus on traversal more also made it a more obvious decision to change. The magic meter didnt dissappear, but it instead evolved to stamina. It even has the same color. Also magic still exists in the series despite the more technological focus the games currently have. Magic just uses stamina or another resource. In ALBW they used the energy bar like all other items. In BOTW there was no distinction between magic and regular weapons based on the resources they used, instead the difference was just in how the weapons interacted with the environment and enemies. With Fire burning wood/staggering enemies/etc Electric paralyzing/disarming enemies, and Ice freezing enemies. BOTW has Magical Fire/Ice/Thunder Rods and their respective arrows. Even the sword, lance, and axe elemental variants are said to be infused with magic. Magic isnt gone, but just implimented differently as the series evolves.
But the Deku Leaf IS magical. It's an enchanted leaf from the forest god that creates huge gusts of wind when swung and can also support the weight of a ten year old in the air despite being too small to accomplish such a task realistically. When you run out of magic it no longer has enough power to keep Link aloft.
Breath of the Wild also had the Champion abilites which were magic attacks on a rechargable gauge. Which honestly was ok with me, but I was just glad to see some super cool magic abilities again. As long as we still have them in some form im ok, its when they don't have anything that makes me a little sad
I miss the magic in Zelda. I think there are better implementations than the magic meter, but I miss Link having abilities that are explicitly magic spells Like spells draining a meter that refills a la stamina would be better than having to find jars to refill it I also kinda dislike stamina, I miss spamming the roll button to go faster lol
Metal Tornado I agree, that would be a good way to do it. I'd also personally like it if there were not just refilling and crafted potions, but also the little magic jars you can find in old games, bc for whatever reason I found it really satisfying to pick those up lol
I was just discussing this a few days ago, funnily enough. I was talking with someone about what we'd like in a potential Breath of the Wild sequel and one of the things I threw out was the Magic Meter to return, since it'd been a while. Though I hadn't realized it's been sixteen years.
If bringing it back means it also brings back more magical items or moves, like Ocarina's goddesses' powers, power-spin, and any other thing that would be too OP if not restricted by it, then yes, I want it back.
The idea behind the Magic Meter isn't a flawed one, acting as an "Ammo" for your spells or magic. Many games have SOME form of this, but Zelda's is the most visually distinct and beloved. I think that they could easily reuse this for later games, but only if they make sure that said Magic is good enough to warrant a limitation. Elder Scrolls has a Mana Meter, but in Skyrim it was just too limiting early on, making many people go for warriors or rogues.
I want the magic meter, spells and magic items to make a return. It would be so convenient to have unbreakable elemental rods. Especially for making fires
Very informative video. I actually never thought the Magic Meter has been gone from new entries for so long. I guess that's what remaking the same game for so many years does to one's mind. :P (Also I recognize that voice. Hey SZ. :P)
I mean it was annoying but it did prevent spamming certain extremely strong attacks like the Light Arrows from Wind Walter & making the game a complete wipe. I actually kinda miss it.
As an accompanied system, it's outdated. Note that in Wild, rupee drops from grass are hugely reduced compared to other entries. Selling cooked drops tended to be a main income source, outside of bog standard adventuring. Stamina taking over it's role for basic things and implementing individual cooldowns for magic-like abilities is akin to the energy meter from recent top-down entries. Arrows are cheap and don't drop from grass, and bombs are infinite. These were likely implemented to disincentivise habitual minutiae of literally spending hours spinning in circles in the middle of plain nowhere for drops and money. However, the champion abilities are the only piece that could be described as true magic. The bombs and general Shiekah bits are more magi-tech. Knowing that, I'd like to see the next entry follow one of two paths: 1. It follows the pure magic route and does away with even basic weaponry outside a sword and uses rechargeable magic for everything, even allowing such magical constructs to change at distance from Link. This could allow for strange things like throwing a magical boomerang, changing it to a solid metal block mid-flight to plunge it into water onto a weighted switch, which reveals a bombable wall next to the switch, so you explode the block. 2. A full tilt into the technological bent, which does away with any and all famicile of magic and puts it in a relatively futuristic setting. Thinking a hypothetical 2040 future. The triforce are chips in a quantum computer, Ganon is a sleazy politician. Just for one game, it could be funny.
If anything it’ll be the energy meter or something similar to that, the magic meter was often thought of as a limit to link or a burden to have to find magic in grass or buying it, for example in a link to the past if you didn’t have or ran out of magic in the part when you went through the sewers there was no real light and it was nearly impossible to see most of the screen. While sad this is seemingly the case.
With the Stamina and Energy gauge system, you're still discouraged from spamming, but you can alleviate it with proper timing and, if need be, items. How I see it is... with Magic, if you overdo magic and need to refill, you just have to hope for some magic potions near by, or carry something on you. There's no guarantee for either. With Stamina or Energy, if you overdo your actions and need to refill, you just have to wait. There's no random chance, there's no "What if", it's just a matter of patience. You can use items in BotW to cut your wait time down, but if you don't stock up, you're not entirely screwed, you're just gonna get to your destination a bit slower.
Shouldn't the real question be about magic abilities? The magic meter was only used to facilitate but limit their use. I wouldn't mind magic abilities returning, particular the different arrows from OoT. But having to find magic pots to refresh it seems a bit out-of-date. A meter that refills automatically after a while like in Between Worlds seems much more appropriate.
I feel like the magic meter in 3d zelda directly correlates to the various elemental arrows. If you didn't have the magic meter or instead had the link between world's meter, there'd be no reason to not use the magic arrows. And light arrows trivialized nearly every overworld enemy. Therefore they added magic to limit OP arrows and OP abilites like Nayru's Love/Wind Waker Magic Armor. For things that are missing, I think a metroid item might be really interesting. Like the ice beam or shinespark.
Can I imagine being in the middle of a shrine and running out of magic? Yes. It would feel a lot like being in the middle of a shrine and running out of arrows.
I thought this would be a video about how magic slowly drained from Hyrule. The curse of reincarnation for Zelda, Link and Ganondorf weakens and less and less magic is around for usage. What was once a trivial is becoming increasingly rare.
A Link Between Worlds basically replaced it with the stamina bar. It acts in the same manner except that non-magical weapon usage like the bow, boomerang, bombs, and Hookshot are tied to it as well.
I think a non-recharging magic meter can work if it's not too restrictive. Maybe you could always have the abilities to use spells, items, etc regardless of magic,, but if you have magic power you could use varying amounts to enhance them. In the context of BotW for intance, you could have the ability to apply an element to a weapon, or use an extra powerful bomb..
Twilight Princess had two equivalents of magic meters: rupees for the red armor, and oil for the lantern. Neither of which were used very often, so I understand how they were overlooked.
Man I love magic. I wish we'll get it back in the BotW engine with lots of crazy stuff to do. Maybe even a game where we play Zelda herself and combat focuses more on magic rather than weapons

@@ramonronquillo4144I think they should have a magic meter that slowly refills over time but have craftable potions that refill it faster. That way there is challenge but players don't get stuck or have to backtrack because they're out of magic.
This is one of my greatest gripe about BOTW. I miss the magic meter :(
I do miss magic spells like those in OOT. I was really hoping to see them in BOTW. The rods just aren't the same.
Badarm Links champion abilities were kinda like his spells, not counting the rods and such
@@Random1567 kinda. But the only one that felt like a proper attack spell was the lightning, and that was so OP it kinda sucked the fun out of it.
I loved ravalis gale tho
R.i.p. dins fire
I miss the magic meter and Link's magical abilities and items. They were rather fun, and in some cases, rather helpful.
3:58 - Wipesite? I know he meant to say website, but it came out as "Wipesite".
It's been dubbed the "Stamina Wheel" in Skyward Sword and BoTW
미셜비 Yeah, the stamina bar was also in a link between worlds
Someone didn't watch the whole video.
*Stamina Gauge in Skyward Sword
I really liked the ALbW approach.
I think Maybe the Magic meter(in Breath of the Wild) would have been used for more magical items early on such as the Elemental Rods and/or Arrows(having them consume regular arrows and Magic), Early Runes, Champion abilities, or something completely different that isn't in the final game
I am baffled at the notion of people consistently running out of magic in anything other than Zelda 2.
I’d give anything to have a magic meter back in a Zelda game 😢
I believe the magic meter is a from of limitation that, while it feels good to use, can be improved upon. Instead of one universal statistic that determines how much you can use all forms of magic, every item can have its own way of balancing itself. This requires substantially more effort, but it allows for the benefits and drawbacks to a magical item to be designed around in a way that's catered specifically to it, rather than all magic spells being designed to adhere to one universal magic meter.
If they bring the magic meter back i would LOVE if they let you use actual spells, in the same vain as Din's Fire but more useful lol
MAGIC METER FOR LIFE!
They should've used magic and left Out destructable Weapons in BOTW
No way
I feel like a magic meter inspired by the energy gauge from ALBW could be an interesting feature. However, a system like that of the champion abilities in BotW might be its successor.
Could you elaborate? Like what did the ALBW Energy Meter do differently?
I think it could come back but it really needs some form of regeneration, even If it's just too a certain amount. Kinda like how certain games handle health regen.
*YES FINALLY MORE MISSING IN ACTION!!!!*
I think we should see the magic and stamina meter side by side in future games, it makes sense
My boy superzambezi i'm so proud of you!
:D
@@SuperZambezi haha better late than never
for real, guys... wur da majik at?
I've been wondering the same thing since I've played Skyward Sword.
Maybe a focus ability to recharge it as long as you are not being attacked but also have other abilities blocked while focusing
They could have the magic meter refill slowly by itself but give the player the option of drinking potions to refill it faster.
More magic in Zelda games sounds good
A bit ironic how while watching the video I forgot it was a Gamexplain vid until near the end. The VO and presentation definitely contributed to that though not that it's a bad thing or anything.
Bring! It! Back!
Doesnt the cover of Twlight Princess have a beta image on the back with the magic meter?
Just the Wii version.
It’s simple, I’ve got the magic in me.
Everytime I touch that track gets turned into gold.
I think there are better implementations than the magic meter, but I miss Link having abilities that are explicitly magic spells
Like spells draining a meter that refills a la stamina would be better than having to find jars to refill it
I also kinda dislike stamina, I miss spamming the roll button to go faster lol
Have the magic meter slowly refill on it's own but have craftable potions that refill it faster.
Why not both? Stamina for item use, and magic for buffs and recovery.
I like to think at least one person just figured out the solution to that Lake Hylia shrine from watching the clip of it here.
Tear of Grace is missing?! OH NO!
I liked how Link Between Worlds did it, where it was more of an energy bar, that worked with all your tools, and refilled gradually.
Great video and presentation!
BRING THE MAGIC METER BACK!!!
(Also I recognize that voice. Hey SZ. :P)
I mean it was annoying but it did prevent spamming certain extremely strong attacks like the Light Arrows from Wind Walter & making the game a complete wipe. I actually kinda miss it.
Magic **Snort snort**
hi chara
No
Mr bean is missing in smash bros ultimate
Why is this not on trending the fact this series is not dead is major news
Knowing that, I'd like to see the next entry follow one of two paths:
I've got one, where did the quality go in the Mario & Luigi series?
If anything it’ll be the energy meter or something similar to that, the magic meter was often thought of as a limit to link or a burden to have to find magic in grass or buying it, for example in a link to the past if you didn’t have or ran out of magic in the part when you went through the sewers there was no real light and it was nearly impossible to see most of the screen. While sad this is seemingly the case.
F for magic arrows
Instead of finding magic pots have the meter refill slowly automatically and if the player wants to refill it faster they can craft magic potions.
It was missing so long I didn't even know it was a thing when I started playing Ocarina.
I say bring it back
The only time that I remember ever used enough magic to run low was spamming Din's fire to beat Shadow Link in the Water Temple.
...Am I the only one here who actually doesn't dislike the magic meter?
It needs a practical use, and make sense in the context of the world. Existing for the sake of existing wouldn't work.
i think it’s worth noting that magic wasn’t replaced by the runes in BoTW, there was still magic in the form of the champion abilities
It took me about 40 seconds to realise you were playing Phantom Hourglass music.
Wasn’t there a magic meter in hyrule warriors??
I actually really liked the fact that Twilight Princess did away with the magic meter. It helped add to the realism that game was going for.
Glad to see this series again!
Can I imagine being in the middle of a shrine and running out of magic? Yes. It would feel a lot like being in the middle of a shrine and running out of arrows.
I guess you can say the magic meter performed its final act; disappear. Rest in peace, MM. You will be missed.
The magic meter was in a link between worlds, it was just called the Energy gauge, but it served the same function
