  • In 2020 I decided I would make my official retirement from my life's career with a landmark watch. Sadly I could not financially run to the cliche of a gold watch, but I selected a Rolex GMT Master II (Rootbeer) as my timepiece to mark this major life transition.
    Knowing the challenges of purchasing a desirable Rolex watch in the modern era I embarked upon my mission to reduce the Rootbeer into my ownership - this is my story.........

    Never expected to see the rootbeer be waitlisted... There was a time when most two tone would just sit in cases without any buyers... You could just walk in and buyit..

      I think it is a sign of the times in respect to the explosion of interest in the Rolex brand. Although, I think the interest in bi-metal models is limited to the big three (Daytona, Submariner & GMT).

    Great story! Well done, and congratulations on both your retirement and your new Rolex! I was very moved by your story, not only from your personal perspective, but reaffirming that there are some very honest and pleasant ADs around. I had occasion, finally, to see one of these Root Beer in real life, after two years. I was absolutely blown away with the watch. It was at a non-Rolex AD, however, pre owned and at quite a premium. But it did cause me to go straight to my local AD and put myself on the wait list, with whom I have a great history and rapport as well. Mind you, they are a family owned business here in Western Canada, so of course the volume of watches is not nearly as great as in your situation. Nevertheless, I am prepared to be patient, and I figure the longer I wait the more I will appreciate the watch. I did manage to get a Submariner stainless steel last year in just over a month, so perhaps there is hope! I recently turned 71, so I would like to get at least a few years' enjoyment out of the watch! :) Anyway, again I say well done and well deserved and thanks for your great review! Cheers, Carl

      I am really enjoying the RB at the moment (I'm wearing it right now). It has lived up to my expectations and even surpassed it a little. Its very similar to a Sub in so many ways and they are strikingly similar to wear, but the gold does offer a touch of class and individuality in this age of fascination with steel watches. Good luck with your wait - I hope it will be short!

    I fell in love with this same watch two years ago and wanted it as a retirement gift to myself. I put my name on a wait list and was told it would be about 6-12 month wait. I was retiring 9 months later so the timing would have been perfect. Just less than a month after having my name on the list I got the call to pick it up. It is one of the best gifts that I ever gave myself:) I absolutely love it! Congrats on yours and your retirement!!

    Congrats on the root beer, and thank you for sharing your AD story. I also bought my first Rolex recently from an AD (currently the very in-demand yellow dial Oyster Perpetual 36mm) after a relatively short wait, but my story is a bit different.
    I have a purchase history with my Rolex AD over three years, albeit with non-Rolex brands (TAG, Tutor, JLC and some accessories). I have tried on multiple Rolexes with them, some sport models, some DJs and OPs but never pulled the trigger. Something always felt a bit off with whichever model I tried. So the AD knew I just needed to find the right watch, and I'm not a flipper. Throughout these years, I would keep in touch with my sales rep. I'd text her when there was a shooting incident at the mall she works at; I asked her if she's ok during the Covid lockdown and she was on furlough. You know, just being a decent person and spreading some care. Then Rolex unveiled their 2020 releases, and I loved the yellow dial OP. I texted my rep to tell her this is the first Rolex that I want, and she knew this time I'm serious. She couldn't commit to how long my wait will be, but low and behold, I got the call after a 6-week wait. Quite happy to have finally gotten my first Rolex after having experienced a lot of other brands.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +2

      Congrats on that new OP, I very much like the new colours and particularly like the fact that they are all available in the 36mm (my preferred classic size for dressy watches). Your route to your purchase is a great example of building a positive relationship with an AD and then resulting in a watch of distinction. I hope you enjoy that beautiful watch is excellent health - best regards, Ash

    I just got the new cermit submariner, my first rolex and absolutely love it. I also like the idea (and try to enforce it myself) that watch purchases should mark life milestones/achievements, this gives the watch a element of sentimentality.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +2

      I would not suggest the Tudor instead of the Rolex GMT, they are very different animals and do not compare very well. I have both and the Tudor is a big beast of a watch, big, chunky and enigmatic. The Rolex is definitely more dressy and wearable with a wider range of attire. I would wait out for the Rolex if that is your desire, they are becoming a little more accessible now (thanks to CV19) and the period of 'hotness' of the Pepsi and Batgirl will soon cool off. The Tudor is a great watch, in fact, I only filmed an update review video yesterday and I love it - but it is very different to the Rolex (and a lot cheaper too).

By the way after passing on the root beer the Ad asked what I preferred I said a steel sub less than a week later I got a call and I’ve had my sub ever sense.

    Congratulations on your choice Ash and your retirement, your over a thousand subs now and I’m sure your channel will blow up further as it deserves to. I’m a little surprised why you didn’t go for a dress watch on a leather strap as i think it would really compliment your outfits and be sufficiently different to your sub. Beautiful watch. Wear it every day! I’ve found the ADs in airports are usually sister stores to local downtown ADs and rarely have any of the waitlisted watches as they stay downtown and go to their preferred customers. Also, the VAT or tax savings can be done at any downtown AD just like at the airport. COVID has twisted the market somewhat, and yet I’ve been surprised to see the demand and scarcity continue. Absolutely beautiful watch. Congrats on your retirement!

Rugged, timeless, wearable with anything (even tuxedo - thanks James Bond) and utterly, utterly bombproof in all respects. I don't think you need ever look for anything else in a watch - in fact - I'm wearing one now!
      - As regards to budget - just remember, as soon as you buy it (from an AD) its actually worth more money than you just paid for it! - a good argument to have with the budget holder (wife).

    My observation in my local AD is that any person walking in off the street gets ‘put on a mythical wait list’ while others who have a history (doesn’t seem to matter how much you spend for my AD at least) of purchasing puts you into a position to have special occasion watches get you a call. Many of these hot watches are in the vault of the store, and the AD selects who gets it and who doesn’t simply due to demand. Crazy times but I get it. Right now there are hundreds and hundreds of Pepsi’s on Chrono from flippers. A small % of those sell but otherwise they sit. It’s really sad actually.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +1

      I agree, any so-called desirable watch begins its own environment of buying and hoarding by the people who never actually wear them. I'm not too big a fan of the pepsi anymore, I used to like it, but the hype and market factors killed any interest I had (I also had a Tudor GMT pepsi which sated my hunger). I wonder how long it will be before the next zeitgeist watch appears and the pepsi becomes yesterday's watch?

    • @stebesplace
      @stebesplace 3 года назад

      The Chap's Guide great question. I still like the Pepsi personally, but I believe it’s only due to the historical significance of the colorway, nothing else. I’m trying really hard to not be a fan boy of Rolex but feel the pressure deviating to other brands simply because of the value retention. I feel REALLY good when I walk out of an AD and k ow the watch on my wrist didn’t just lose 15, 20, 30, or even 40% of its value even if I never intended to sell it. The Pepsi craze won’t die down anytime soon however, multi-year orders are being fulfilled and over time (1-3 years) we may see things begin to normalize economically where interests shift elsewhere in the Rolex catalog or other brands, maybe. Who knows, I’d still like my Pepsi!

      I'd definitely give it a go - my unexpected success took me by surprise, but I imagine situations like these must be more and more common. Since making this video, I have been contacted my the original store (the one that quoted me a 3-4 year wait) to tell me that they had a Rootbeer coming into stock for me (a wait of 2-months from my initial enquiry). I declined obviously, but it does show that the watch situation has become extremely fluid.

    I found out about this interesting video on Paul Thorpe’s channel😊 Rolex ADs are now (according to reports I have heard from several sources) now operating a preferred client model rather than waiting lists. It isn‘t clear exactly what tests they apply, but a person’s age, dress, and the watches he already owns very likely come into it? What they are ultra-keen to do is to weed out the track-suited spivs who are buying a steel Rolex watch on Monday and flipping it for a quick profit on Tuesday. Conversely they don’t want the right kind of buyer to have to wait a vast period of time. In your case the new system obviously worked - so kudos to Rolex, I guess!✌️

    I bought a Rolex OP 114200 for my wife at the end of august then put my name down on a 124300 in turquoise a month later and now I have it on my wrist could not believe that I managed to get one as the resell price is double. I believe that I came over to the AD as a watch lover having owned my omega seamaster since new from 1997 and passing my watches down to my son. All the best with the new watch

    Interesting video. Here in Singapore ADs appear to have no stock of anything desirable, nor knowledge of when anything is expected to arrive so I've resorted to the grey market locally and in Hong Kong to buy DJ41 blue Dial and Submariner Starbucks in the last 2 months. Fascinating to see that your local AD couldn't help you despite your purchase history but Goldsmiths could.. beautiful watch you chose and I guess quite a lot easier to get at MRSP than a Pepsi.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад

      Thank you for your comments - the GMT is performing well and I am delighted with the watch to date. I think the whole Pepsi market has gone a little nuts of late and will continue to do so for some time. Much as I like a GMT (I have a few in my collection), I would never get sucked into the very clever marketing of Rolex and buy any presently available watch for more than MSRP. Whilst nice, these are not remarkable timepieces and I consider them to be somewhat overpriced for the engineering at MSRP. I must say I dom like the look of the new Sub green, perhaps less so than the Hulk version, but its a really nice watch indeed - enjoy it in good health.

  • @drmossy69
    @drmossy69 3 года назад

    You got lucky!
    I started collecting watches and now have 3 Rolex, rootbeer, hulk, both bought on grey market and I have just started a relationship with an local ad and just got my first watch a two tone bluesy, I now have to get a datejust and that will unlock a Pepsi or batgirl- I can choose, I have also bought the new snoopy omega which I will be getting early next year.
    In September 2019 I bought a beautiful two tone datejust for my wife from goldsmiths who are part of watches of Switzerland group with the promise of a gmt within a year, when I have popped in to visit them they don’t even seemed bothered about the broken promise so I have now emailed their head office to complain as they shouldn’t make these promises to sell the less desirable products.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад

      I know experiences vary from location to location and even then between the sales agents. Personally, I would never get involved with any arrangements around buying less popular watches to access trendy watches - when you add up the costs, you would be better off buying a Pepsi on the grey market. It sounds like you already have a really magnificent watch collection, especially that Bluesy, I have not even seen one of the new models in that configuration yet. Wear them in happiness & good health.

But, like all things, I have no doubt the current trend is cyclical and with crash & burn in the future. Personally, I purchase my timepieces to enjoy and own, so I'm happy to pay MSRP and have no intention to ever sell onwards, so resale prices are inconsequential.
